Arcade Fire

And the nominees for "Album of the Year" are:

* The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
* Recovery by Eminem
* Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
* The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga
* Teenage Dream by Katy Perry
Crazy.

Also funny: Mumford & Sons are up for Best New Artist against Justin Bieber (and Drake, Florence & The Machine, and Esperanza Spalding)

Robyn is up for Best Dance Recording against Lady Gaga (and Goldfrapp, La Roux, and Rihanna).

Arcade Fire are also nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals against Muse, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, and... Jeff Beck & Joss Stone.

The Black Keys also landed in the "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" along with... Dave Matthews.

The Black Keys and Mumford & Sons and Kings of Leon and Muse are also all in the "Best Rock Song" category.

"Best Alternative Album" category:

* The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
* Infinite Arms by Band Of Horses
* Brothers by The Black Keys
* Broken Bells by Broken Bells
* Contra by Vampire Weekend
So they give that to Arcade Fire, since Lady Gaga will probably get Album of the Year, or maybe Arcade Fire will just get screwed and they'll give it to someone on a major.

Other names that got nominated: Cee-Lo, Janelle Monae, Big Boi, John Legend & The Roots, Jay-Z, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Flight of the Conchords, Devendra Banhart (for "Best Recording Package"), Oh No Ono (ditto), Anais Mitchell (ditto), Danger Mouse, Gorillaz, and Carol Burnett. Full list at the Grammys site.

You know Grammy's......VW as one of the best alternative album?! hahaha give me a break...

I can name two cds that are better than that garbage....

Jonsi and Foals.

P.S. new AF sucks as well.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:40 AM

yeah, i can't really say the suburbs is better than a 6/10.

suburban war is SO bloated, wasted hours is a snooze (cheap attempt at neil young), deep blue is a drag, and sprawl I kinda sux. any takers on this?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:44 AM

I mean everyone knows the Grammys are a joke, but good for Arcade Fire.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:53 AM

AF have become too big for my taste....I mean after playing two shows at MSG, where do you think they'll play in Spring 2011?

5 nights at Terminal 5?! hahah jk

They'll probably play two shows at Radio City again......

P.S. Agree with Jonsi being one of the best cds to come out this year.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 2:33 AM

suburbs is a an awesome album start to finish and it is great for arcade fire even if it is the grammys, great band no matter how big they are right now...

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 5:37 AM

Wow ... this is a sad state of affairs. Love AF but still ... the other contenders are just depressing.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 6:31 AM

Who?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 6:49 AM

not surprised and not impressed

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 7:54 AM

happy to see the general consensus on the new arcade fire is the same here.

there's countless records that deserve the recognition other than them...

i'm baffled that Sufjan Stevens "Age of Adz" isn't on the alternative list.

but then again, i don't consider any of those bands "alternative" since that is a broad genre invented by the panel to pretend they know what is relevant

OMG OMG OMG I LOATHE THE ARCADE DIRE!

WINNIE THE POOP FIGURED OUT THAT SUBURBIA IS WEIRD -- MAJOR EPIPHANY.

Posted by ARCADE DIRE GUY | December 2, 2010 8:17 AM

hopefully they win so people can start ignoring them

Posted by Isfet | December 2, 2010 8:18 AM

Bread >>>>>>>>>>> The Arcade Fire

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 8:19 AM

The Arcade Fire is the alternative to great rock music.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 8:23 AM

Looks like Win is well on his way to that "new Bono / Springsteen" status he so covets. Whether you think that is a good or bad thing is the question.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 8:24 AM

6:49 is 8:17

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 8:28 AM

WIN BUTLER WOKE UP ONE MORNING IN SUBURBAN MONTREAL, LOOKED AROUND AND SAID: "MAN, THIS IS A STRANGE SITUATION. I'D BETTER WRITE A CONCEPT ALBUM ABOUT IT."

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 8:29 AM

@2:33 " AF have become too big for my taste..."

Congratulations .

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 8:37 AM

got to love the comments at BV
the grammys finally give the indie crowd a bone and you trash it. Good for AC and I guess the rest of you prefer

* Recovery by Eminem
* Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
* The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga
* Teenage Dream by Katy Perry

:p

Here is the band that crushes the Arcade Fire and all the other pretenders:

"6:49 is 8:17"

You'll never make it in the Kreskin biz.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 8:59 AM

And the relevance of the Grammy's is? Look at those nominees:
1. Arcade Fire 2. Eminem - a decade late, who cares. 3. Some fake new Nashville country-pop. 4. A club album. 5. Some Z100 shit.

By trying to appeal to every possible youth demographic everyone is degraded.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:07 AM

UGH!!! The Grammy's get it wrong every fucking year...can we start an a official ban of this nonsense?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:21 AM

REALLY, THE ARCADE FUCKING DIRE?

Posted by adg | December 2, 2010 9:21 AM

^apparently a slow day at the offices of MAD Magazine

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:26 AM

ugh mumford and sons

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:29 AM

It really sucks having to constantly apologize on this blog for enjoying the Arcade Fire. They are a solid band and on their way to huge things. I think they are a lot more innovative than, say, Vampire Weekend.

Posted by Dan | December 2, 2010 9:33 AM

I wonder: who will be the winner at the Album of the Year category? All the nominees are very talented artists who have very good albums...

Posted by LED Signs | December 2, 2010 9:35 AM

My money is on Gaga for the win.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:52 AM

Vampire Weekend: bourgeois college-boy nerds.

Arcade Dire: bourgeois nerd + French-Canadian doofuses.

Pretty nauseating. Rock and roll is not longer a proletarian thing, but a reflection of the pretenses of the middlebrows.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 10:05 AM

"It really sucks having to constantly apologize on this blog for enjoying the Arcade Fire. They are a solid band and on their way to huge things."

The kind of huge thing you flush down the toilet.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 10:06 AM

Arcade Fire's music is fine and all, but...I'm sick of looking at their whiny little pissant stinkface mugs.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 10:30 AM

We get it. Arcade Fire is a famous and successful band. And since when do these awards matter?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 10:31 AM

can we stop talking about arcade fire now?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:14 AM

Christopher Cross is due for a Grammy comeback

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:21 AM

Arcade Fire can finally walk amongst the greats, which apparently include Katy Perry.

on another note, Band of Horses' Infinite Arms was terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:23 AM

Christopher Cross >>>>>> Arcade Fire

I'm with you after the word "but"

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:27 AM

were is Kanye? That was the greatest album I have ever heard ever. No question. Best.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:27 AM

1 great album and 2 "not nearly as good as the first" albums don't make you the greatest band in the world.

Shall we go through all the Radiohead albums which are nearly perfect? Oh right, there are 6 of them. let's not forget...

thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:29 AM

Win and Regine are the John and Yoko of the current era, only Win just has Lennon's ego without the talent.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:32 AM

Grammys go by album sales. Talent or artistry is not $

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:32 AM

11:27 -- thanks for the thoughts, Kanye!

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:35 AM

Personally I am disgusted with the lack of sweaty sax among the nominees.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:36 AM

I smell a huge fart ... Sprawl II is in the area!

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:37 AM

the fart was during intervention, get your record straight

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:50 AM

"Arcade Fire's music is fine and all, but...I'm sick of looking at their whiny little pissant stinkface mugs. "

haha, exactly how i feel

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:57 AM

I really don't get Arcade Fire. Meh police, pull over!

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 12:19 PM

Kanye made the best album I never heard. Because I refuse to listen.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 12:20 PM

11:32, youre way off. The Grammys mean nothing and the fact that you people are arguing what should be nominated is pointless, but have you seen some of the winners of Album of the Year in the past 10 years?

Steely Dan
Ray Charles
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack
Herbie Hancock covering Joni Mitchell songs

Yeah man, those are all mainstream, multi-platinum albums.

Posted by GregBX | December 2, 2010 12:23 PM

11:32 and 12:23, you are both way off. The Grammys do not go by album sales, talent or artistry. They go by RATINGS. It's on television, so It's about getting people to tune in: ad space. Nominees and performers are chosen based on what will bring in the highest RATINGS for the network. Not worth arguing over.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 12:48 PM

I'll be tuning in for KP.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:11 PM

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss

Posted by سعودي كول | December 2, 2010 1:16 PM

12:48, you are way off, too. Grammys are voted on by artists, producers and engineers who have enough points to qualify. Think about how many people benefit from these albums/songs getting nominated/winning even if they are not directly involved in the project. It's about how big a rolodex is. Label execs will make sure anyone that can vote votes for the same thing in order to up the chances. Very few people in the industry legitimately think Katy Perry is good, but she has a better chance of selling records to the dumb mainstream public due to a win than Jonsi or something. The performances and presenters are certainly about TV ratings, but the actual ballots are just about business, not about art.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:39 PM

Arcade MEH.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:56 PM

"By trying to appeal to every possible youth demographic everyone is degraded."

Word...its just shocking how out of line the Grammy's are even with mainstream music critics. It's like if Spiderman 3 won an academy award for best picture.

"Its like a slap in the face to everyone trying to do something real"

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 2:11 PM

Jesus hates the Arcade Dire, and so does his father.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 2:15 PM

Which is the better concept album: Rick Wakeman''s Journey To The Center of the Earth, or Suburbs?

My vote goes to Rick.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 2:17 PM

"Arcade MEH."

you weren't even trying with that one

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 2:31 PM

Arcade Fire is the worst band ever! Guy can't sing at all! And their music sucks! All around probably the worst band ever

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 2:45 PM

Sometimes the comments here really make me question the decisions I've made in my life.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 2:55 PM

i like how any post revolving around AF have upwards of 60 comments, 95% of which are from the same person

"Vampire Weekend: bourgeois college-boy nerds.

Pretty nauseating. Rock and roll is not longer a proletarian thing, but a reflection of the pretenses of the middlebrows."

you can go listen to post-grunge bullshit and enjoy real rock n roll with the proletariat. arcade fire is art rock. its not meant to be testosterone cock rock. they've always been on an indie label and happened to get popular. i dont like the suburbs and i'm not a vampire weekend fan but its not like VW sold out their sound. they've always sounded the same.

this anti-intellectual attitude is the same type of thing that leads to the electing of a president because you 'want to have a beer' with him.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 5:35 PM

Infinite Arms really was a piece of shit album.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 5:42 PM

MUMFORD AND SUCK

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 7:30 PM

Withing 5-7 years, all the hipsters who love The Suburbs will be leaving Williamsburg and living in the actual burbs with a partner and 3 kids.

Do they carry PBR in suburban grocery stores?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 8:58 PM

katy perry has really big tits. that's why she is popular.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 12:12 AM

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 7:45 AM

Arcade Fire SUCKS. The Grammy's SUCK.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 8:23 AM

THIS BAND BLOWS

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 4:24 PM

band of horses album is average. they had a couple good songs from first album but have sucked since then.

arcade fire is a good and innovative band, but Suburbia is their worst album. 1st album much more deserving of the Grammy.

can people really be classified as proletariat and bourgeois still? and if so, who gives a fuck? vampire weekend sucks b/c their music sucks, not b/c they're privileged kids. they could be from the ghetto, and their music would still suck.

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 11:43 AM

"can people really be classified as proletariat and bourgeois still?"

LOL. Are you kidding? Class is the dirty little secret of America. You think there's no difference between the boys in Vampire Weekend and the people who clean their apartments and fix their cars?

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 12:36 PM

And the nominees for worst album of the year:

Joanna Newsome
Katy perry
Usher
Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend's other album
The Vampire Weekend EP
Lil Wayne
Did I mention Joanna MEHsome?

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 5:32 PM

Seriously?!?! Vampire Weekend? Where the fuck was "High Violet" for Alternative Album?

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 5:39 PM
