Captain Beefheart

Don Van Vliet, who became a rock legend as Captain Beefheart, died today (12/17) from complications from multiple sclerosis in California. His passing was announced by the New York-based Michael Werner Gallery, which represented his work as a painter...

"Don Van Vliet was a complex and influential figure in the visual and performing arts," the gallery said in a statement. "He is perhaps best known as the incomparable Captain Beefheart who, together with his Magic Band, rose to prominence in the 1960s with a totally unique style of blues-inspired, experimental rock & roll. This would ultimately secure Van Vliet's place in music history as one of the most original recording artists of his time. After two decades in the spotlight as an avant-garde composer and performer, Van Vliet retired from performing to devote himself wholeheartedly to painting and drawing. Like his music, Van Vliet's lush paintings are the product of a truly rare and unique vision." -[RollingStone]

RIP Captain Beefheart.

A musical icon and personal hero and so soon after Peter. Heartbreaking news.

NOOOOOOOO

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 9:58 PM

Him and his group were true originals of deconstructing conventional songs making something wonderfully new. The reissue double albums from a while back had lots of extra studio gems on them.

MS needs much more research to treat it.

Dont blame him for being recluse and painting the last years thats for sure.

You will be remembered always Don.

Can't say that I ever "got" Beefheart, but his influence is endless and he made a lot of otherwise marginalized weirdos very happy. Godspeed, van Vliet.

13 stinking lousy comments for the passing of a master like Beefheart? BV music fans should be ashamed of themselves. At least the people above have intelligence and excellent music knowledge.

Thank you Don...
Gee, another visionary artist dies before he is appreciated by the mass public. I'm so glad the arts aren't subsidized in the USA.

So it goes.

"Enfant terrible" is the best description I've ever heard.
The tune "Bat Chain Puller" was one of my favorites.
China Pig...On the My oh My...
"Hot Head"
Lots of them.
Kinda of a nut.
Went to the same HS as Frank Zappa, somewhere in CA.

He was also a Kirby Vacume salesman.
His opening line at the door was always "these things suck"
Never did well.

His best effort was with Zappa.
Bongo Fury album being one of them.

glad you get so much humor from a joke that never really was. especially in the context of an obituary, and that of one for someone who made it so possible for many of the bands to appear on this site possible. rock on dude. you're really keeping the true spirit of creativity alive.

And 100% agree with Bongo Fury. "Captain Beefheart on vocals and soprano sax and madness."

This sucks beyond belief. The Captain was one of the few musicians who was able to change the way I view and enjoy music. I prefered him over Zappa.

Much like Syd Barrett, a reculse and a crazy diamond he was.

Royce Farell- yours may be one of the most creative and in tune BV comments ever. All those making jokes here are ignorant douchebags that wouldn't know true creative music if it bit them on the ass (paraphrasing Zappa). Did anyone attend Zappa Plays Zappa? It was the night Beef died. Was there any mention? Any special tribute?

Posted by g | December 19, 2010 6:12 AM

Like Tom Waits once said, "once you've heard Beefheart, it's hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains like coffee or blood."

In his 2010 memoir Beefheart: Through The Eyes of Magic, John French recounted being "screamed at, beaten up, drugged, ridiculed, humiliated, arrested, starved, stolen from, and thrown down a half-flight of stairs by his employer".

Sounds like a really nice guy.

Also, in my opinion, his music is un-listenable, not groundbreaking.

Nevertheless, RIP.

Beefheart was not obsessed with beef. It was a name given to him by Zappa, from a sci-fi film they were making in the early 60's. Beefheart was obsessed with animals, and in his later years, gardening. He and his wife Jan apparently had an impressive collection of sprouts. I'm sure he ate plenty of hummus. And I'm sure that hummus and/or a strict vegan diet cannot cure MS.
