the 12/1 sign & mixtape
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo

Thurston Moore made the mix tape. Nash Kato of Urge Overkill was a special guest, as was an Elvis impersonator named Gene Dinapoli. Anyone have the setlist?

One down, seven more nights of Chanukah at Maxwell's to go (note: Ted Leo actually also has December 5th off - one night before Terminal 5 - which I didn't notice when I first wrote the last post which is now updated).

Todd Barry played drums on the Sparks cover.
There was a 3-piece horn section for the first four songs of the set. M Ward played on most of YLT's set and all the encores.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:50 AM

In case you couldn't figure out aome of the tougher ones:

8 = "8 Nights With You" aka Elvis' "One Night With You" (bonus fact: original title "One Night of Sin")

H TIME = "Hanukkah Time" aka Al Johnson's "Carnival Time"

MAGNET = NRBQ cover

ELEPHANT = How to Make a Baby Elephant Float

STARS = More Stars Than There are in Heaven (a ridiculously great version)

DARK = When It's Dark (hoping for "By The Time It Gets Dark" another night)

CH CH = Cherry Chapstick

"STORY" is the rarely played "Story of Jazz," a real burner from 1987's New Wave Hot Dogs. Final verse:
"Well, naturally I was a little confused
So I placed a call, person to person,
"Connect me to Steve Albini!"
Let the phone ring twice
When he answered I forgot everything I was gonna say

i love you yo la tengo. please don't play Autumn Sweater tonight. it's not that i don't like the song - i do. but you play it all the time . . . like every show. if i may make one request, i'd love to hear Detouring America With Horns - i can't remember hearing that track for a looooong time now. if ever. i definitely think it's my favorite song of yours.

"i love you yo la tengo. please don't play Autumn Sweater tonight. it's not that i don't like the song - i do. but you play it all the time "

I am the same way with Mr. Tough. They have played it at every local show since it came out (I only missed the Roseland show). Give it a rest already. When I saw the horns last night I immediately thought "oh great, Mr. Tough AGAIN". :)

Tom Courtenay was played to death by YLT in the '90s.

"monday - amy rigby / wreckless eric - they announced it during their show near d.c. last night."

is this confirmed/true? i hope not. it's my only night.

How many years in a row has Todd Barry done these shows? Get some fresh blood in there Ira!!

Posted by JT | December 2, 2010 10:50 AM

According to Ira's introduction last night, Todd Barry has performed at least once at every year with YLT Hannukah.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 10:53 AM

Todd Barry is great.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:02 AM

Yeah you can't mess with Todd... one of the best in NYC

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:08 AM

Wreckless Eric played with them a few years back and was awesome

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 11:08 AM

"How many years in a row has Todd Barry done these shows? Get some fresh blood in there Ira!!"

At least he didn't repeat jokes like he has done before.

The show was good, and exactly what all of these shows are: a hell of a lot of fun, light-hearted, funny, very enjoyable. It's not really a 'real' YLT show, but definitely worth the trek under the river. Stars was awesome, Elephant and Saturday were nice except I wish people would stop their yammerin' 'cause, you know, they're quiet and delicate songs and it's kinda rude to be yakking away loudly. M Ward impressed, Nash Kato hasn't aged well but was fun to see.

M Ward started around 8:50, played for half an hour. I think YLT finally started around 10:30 or so (seemed like long delays between sets, but whatever) and the show wrapped right around 12:30. Good stuff.

Todd Barry is ok, but you can see him for free any night of the week. Nothing special.

3) 4 minutes of tape hiss
