Kanye West

And the winner is... (obviously) Kanye West. Pitchfork posted their annual much-talked-about list of the best albums of 2010. Much like Rolling Stone, SPIN and others, Kanye's new album topped the list. Pitchfork's recipient for best song of the year, Ariel Pink, landed the 9th best album. No Jonsi?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:29 AM

I don't hate it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:31 AM

don't much care for #s 2,3,6,8,9, and never really listened to #5. So I guess I'm 60% unhip. Nice to see Titus in the top ten though.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:34 AM

I was pretty surprised that "Sports" by Huey Lewis & The News was #4.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:34 AM

all these lists are the same... where is BV's list?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:36 AM

No Watain?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:38 AM

Grinderman and Swans were ONLY honorable mentions, not even cracking through the Top 50??!

NO JONSI???!?!?!?!!!!!

INSTANT F--KING FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:38 AM

Ridgewood, Nj snubbed hard.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:40 AM

this is exactly my top 50 list too

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:40 AM

I really, really don't get LCD Soundsystem. I have the last 2 albums (I was given copies) & I'm just stupefied at all the praise they/he received. Otherwise, not a bad last. I gotta say though, I think all this Kanye praise is deserved.

Posted by M | December 17, 2010 10:41 AM

So in the eyes of Pitchfork, Drake's album was better than Swans and Jonsi...the f--king EP put out by Girls was better than the complete albums by Swans and Jonsi??!

I know this is only music and this is just some list by a bunch of holier-than-thou d-bags, but I am pretty annoyed over this ridiculous BS! FU P4k!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:43 AM

that jonsi album is amazing, pfuck.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:46 AM

I don't understand the love for this last LCD album either. Sound of Silver was 100x better.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:48 AM

Lame.. They didn't even include the new Dickfuck album

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:50 AM

Titus should be #1.

And why no love for Belle & Sebastian?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:50 AM

No Laura Marling or Jonsi?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:51 AM

Focusing on the good, the Joanna Newsom and Deerhunter albums are both excellent. I'm glad to see they cracked the top 10

Posted by Dan | December 17, 2010 10:53 AM

sound of silver was better, but this is happening is great. took some time to grow on me, but after hearing a majority of the songs live between two shows months apart i realized how great they were.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:54 AM

No love for The Farts?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:54 AM

NO FOALS! MAJOR FAIL!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:01 AM

Tops 40s rap surpasses all indie rock, didn't you know that?

Let's hear it for the wiggers!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:02 AM

"Let's hear it for the wiggers!"

hahaha

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:04 AM

No wakka flakka flame??!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:05 AM

"I really, really don't get LCD Soundsystem. I have the last 2 albums (I was given copies) & I'm just stupefied at all the praise they/he received"

imo sound of silver might be album of the decade. sorry to hear that

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:05 AM

The subtle sonic details, the perfect sequencing, the off the wall ORGINALITY...Avey Tare is a master at this point...

Posted by Billboard | December 17, 2010 11:06 AM

The new LCD is a really good album, but not #2 on a year-end list kinda good.

My main gripe with the album is the way too low vocals on the first track. I understand the hush vox into louder music but this just sounds like bad production. Anyone else??

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:08 AM

"Dynamite" by Jermaine Jackson was a gutsy choice at #12, but justified.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:10 AM

as someone above noted, it's all subjective, so ultimately whatever, but the fact that the peeps at Pitchfork deemed LCD Soundsystem and Kayne better than the National is just utterly and completely laughable. thanks for making my Friday Pitchfork, woo, man, still laughing...

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:10 AM

The thing about the National is that they eat cock.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:11 AM

that How to Dress Well album fucking sucks

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:13 AM

11.08, agreed. 100%

while i think it works in the transition...when things kick up, it does leave you wondering during those first, whatever, 3 mins.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:15 AM

No Kesha?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:17 AM

I was expecting to totally hate on their list this year because I figured there was so much good music this year to be overlooked, but most of the stuff that would make my list is on there somewhere. Maybe in a perplexing order, but how do you really rank music objectively anyway. I'm not sure how they left off The Radio Dept and The Drums considering they generated a lot of hype for these albums. IMO they picked the lesser of the two Das Racist mixtapes released this year. And no one seems to agree with me that the MGMT's congratulations is a psych-pop masterpiece. I also would have thrown in The Thermals, Warpaint, Black Angels, Ty Segall and Crocodiles for good measure.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:21 AM

blah, so what

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:22 AM

The National does not, in fact, eat cock.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:24 AM

I'm not complaining but there were a lot more albums than usual a reviewer praised with a high score and "Best New Music" that didn't even make honorable mentions. Off the top of my head:

Broken Social Scene
Owen Pallett
Local Natives
Four Tet (I think)
Julian Lynch
Fang Island

On the contrary, I was glad to see Abe Vigoda in the Top 40.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:28 AM

MGMT's sophomore effort was inevitably a Catch 22. If they were to do more of the same, they'd be lambasted for it; and experimentation of any kind would alienate the legions of fans who first heard "Time to Pretend" on 90210.

Personally, I feel Congratulations was a brave move and easily better than their debut--but in the end, just not one of my favorites of the year. Kudos to them though...

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:29 AM

Swans didn't make the list? Ouch.

Posted by Anonymousmous | December 17, 2010 11:30 AM

The National smokes poles.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:31 AM

Maybe the low vocal mix on LCD's "This is Happening" is to cover up the weak lyrics. That was a total rep pick at number 2.

First two LCD albums are awesome though. List def needs some Foals.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:31 AM

Where's Menomena and Gonja Sufi?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:33 AM

Julian Lynch "Mare"....no mention? wtf?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:36 AM

Swans got honorable mention.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:36 AM

Where is Broken Social Scene?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:38 AM

Kanye's MDTBF is not a good ALBUM. Does it have incredible songs for 70%? Yes. Does it have terrible songs as well? YES!

Wait - pitchfork sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:42 AM

never could figure out why these polls are done ever year - its all subjective anyway - i know what my list is - can't help it if these critics have no taste :D

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:42 AM

yeah, man how could they completely leave off BSS? That's gotta be some kind of clerical error

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:44 AM

No Besnard Lakes.... fail

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 11:45 AM

At this moment, Kanye is touching lil' kanye and telling him, 'I am a star. I'm a star, I'm a star, I'm a star. I am a big, bright, shining star.'

Posted by dirk | December 17, 2010 11:57 AM

I like it! I like it! :)

Posted by Cari | December 17, 2010 11:57 AM

11.21 - I, for one, agree with you on Congratulations. #2 on my list (like anyone cares about my list).

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:03 PM

understand the love for this last LCD album either. Sound of Silver was 100x

Posted by Massagem Relaxante | December 17, 2010 12:06 PM

I'm really surprised they didn't include Owen Pallett. They listed Heartland as Best New Music and gave it an 8.6... and also, it is awesome. Come on, P4k!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:07 PM

Sad to see no Foals nor Klaxons. Awesome that Caribou is up there.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:07 PM

Black Keys Brothers anyone?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:14 PM

I remember the review for Heartland likening to Joanna Newsom's Ys, which Ptichfork absolutely loved, so I'm pretty shocked they ignored Heartland.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:17 PM

Brothers sucks. Way too long and several songs sound almost identical to past songs. Adding a bass guitar took so much away from this band.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:17 PM

Pitchfork rates something as 'Best New Music' and it doesn't even make their year-end list. Hahahaha!!!!! Just shows that even THEY don't believe they sh!t they write!! Fools!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:18 PM

dont know why theyve completely ignored (didnt even review) the best album of the year: Dustin Wong - Infinite Love.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:18 PM

pitchfork fucking blows. kanye is overrated and a hack. vampire weekend? that new hot chip was a shit sandwich.

Posted by The Phurious One | December 17, 2010 12:19 PM

I don't understand the point of their ratings or Best New Music label if that stuff doesn't matter come the end of the year.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:21 PM

Pitchfork is awful and this list just further proves it. Swans got honorable mention while half these bands ranked is replusive. Happy to see Kylesa get noticed but even Kylesa's new album is a more radio friendly version of "Static Tesions" so how was that album better than My Father Will Guide Me... Just sayin'. Also, Kanye made #1?! They are fucking morons. Brooklyn Vegan, please just let Pitchfork suck Julian Casablanca's dick next year and don't bother clogging up your site with their content.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:27 PM

Where is Dumpy's Rusty Nuts?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:44 PM

^ Julian Casablanca's solo album was actually the sh*t doofus

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:46 PM

Gira > Kanye

Swans > Kanye

SWANYE!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:55 PM

hot chip and vampire weekend!!!??

ha...lets hear it for the douce bags..

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:01 PM

mgmt couldn't even get an honorable mention??? flash delirium and siberian breaks should have been a clue no?

Posted by Michael | December 17, 2010 1:01 PM

Julian Casablancas has his dad's money and can afford to hire a production staff to make sure that he doesn't look like a fool. It's all smoke and mirrors. I can't respect that, doofus.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:03 PM

A fair portion of those listed as "Honorable Mentions" are far better than a lot in the enumerated selection.

This list is just the press release of all of the pole smoking Schreiber and co. do for advertising monies.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:06 PM

who cares about pitchfork...

i read BV for the news/tour dates/photos

i read AV Club for the reviews

Pitchfork is increasingly irrelevant.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:10 PM

I know it was released right at the end of the year, but the AIR WAVES record is phenomenal. Let's see if the Fork can get their act together and at least review it some time next year.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:14 PM

>>I don't understand the point of their ratings or Best New Music label if that stuff doesn't matter come the end of the year.

I don't necessarily agree that a BNM label should guarantee a spot on the Top Whatever list at the end of the year. Some albums either grow or lose their stature over time. I think a really true list wouldn't be written until like June of the following year, if not later.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:17 PM

You've got to be kidding me that Marnie Stern didn't make that list. Insane.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:17 PM

P4k review of Dustin Wong 'Infinite Love' here - http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14802-infinite-love/

Definitely deserved greater praise though!

Posted by Patrick | December 17, 2010 1:17 PM

@11:45 completely agree, the besnard lakes album has been shafted on just about every poll this year. also, they should have won the polaris prize.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:19 PM

no wolf parade at all....

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:22 PM

These are the same people who awarded Kanye with a 10.0....are we still really debating over P4K's opinions??!?!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:22 PM

I WON AGAIN MF, I AM THE BEST EVEN THOUGH I SING MO HORRIBLE THAN YOU PALE HIPSTER TRUT FUNDERS. I GOT MAD BEEFS WIF TEENAGE CUNTRY ARTISTS AND I BANGED KIM K MORE DAN JOHN MAYER. FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER.

Posted by kanyea best | December 17, 2010 1:23 PM

titus andronicus sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:33 PM

at first glance this actually looked like their "Worst Album Covers of the Year" list.

Posted by Ron | December 17, 2010 1:43 PM

WHERE WAS HARLEM!?!?!?!?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:44 PM

I am so angry that a bunch of people I've never met like different albums than I do!

I am happy to see Big Boi placed as high as he should be for once. I thought the Titus Andronicus album was the best of the year, but I can't argue with Kanye. I'd have Deerhunter and Beach House in my top 5 also, and they thankfully left Sufjan Stevens out of the top 20, so all things considered this is a good list.

Posted by Justin Timberwolf | December 17, 2010 2:09 PM

Future Islands released the best album of the year.

Wolf Parade and Ted Leo should be on here.

I thought everyone was rightfully embarrassed about ever liking that Sleigh Bells album now?

Grinderman and Swans in the honorable mention category might as well be a disclaimer reading, "Please do not take the rest of our list seriously."

After cramming Surfer Blood down everyone's throat all year, they could have at least made room for them in the top 50.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 2:14 PM

"Grinderman and Swans in the honorable mention category might as well be a disclaimer reading, "Please do not take the rest of our list seriously.""

100% AGREED!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 2:16 PM

Nick cave is the lamest man alive.

Most underrated album of the year: Menomena - Mines

bring it haters!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 2:28 PM

How forced does wavves at 50 look?

That band (and album) is terrible. Not an opionon. undebatable fact.

Why on earth do we care?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 2:30 PM

Jonsi=garbage. There, I said it

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 2:35 PM

Beach House should be number 1!.

'teen dream' brought deemed them mass success. also if you've been following them closely you'd notice (inevitably) the study progression from their self titled to well...now its immaculate in itself!.

runner up Joanna same story i professed up there ^.

The end.

Posted by AstralForest | December 17, 2010 2:35 PM

Also their list is a sham i have yet to find a some what decent end of the year list.

Kanye west is a joke

to be honest Legendary Classics vol. 1 -R.A. the Rugged Man

alone smashes west whole catalog.

Posted by AstralForest | December 17, 2010 2:47 PM

Yeah, Grinderman and Swans would most certainly make it on a list of Best Albums of 1994.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 2:47 PM

crap

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 2:51 PM

No Beach Fossils?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 2:55 PM

MGMT's album is great, sonically and songwise. I don't understand why it was critically overlooked.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 3:08 PM

Future Islands are getting robbed this year.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 3:28 PM

the chicks in the pic are hot though. i want to have sex with one and get gold on my wang

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 3:37 PM

"Yeah, Grinderman and Swans would most certainly make it on a list of Best Albums of 1994.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 4:00 PM

HUMMUS!!! LOL AM I RIGHT?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 4:20 PM

Kanye sucks, Dr Dog's album Shame Shame should be in the top 10

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 4:38 PM

Why do people get insulted that one particular album was ommited? There were hundreds of good albums this year.

What people should be angry about is that a site most of us, at least at one point of our lives, has a shit load of bands that played thier various shows this year.

Gross. Let me guess...Vampire weekend headlining P4K festival this year.

Of course the counterpoint to that argument is, "So what? Thier shows are very cheap and about as good a concert value you are going to find."

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 4:48 PM

Vampire Weekend is on everyone in New York's shit list right - that stupid "Holiday" song plays WHENEVER YOU GET IN A TAXI!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 4:56 PM

4:48 = moron

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 5:01 PM

Yeah, quick glance shows two albums that P4K deemed "Best New Music" and gave >8 ratings, but didn't make their best new music..and not even honorable mention:

• Fang Island
• Morning Benders

Not sure how they rationalize that. If they get BNM, seems like they'd be a shoe-in for at least honorable mention.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 5:14 PM

501 = ezra koenig

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 5:23 PM

"Julian Casablancas has his dad's money and can afford to hire a production staff to make sure that he doesn't look like a fool. It's all smoke and mirrors. I can't respect that, doofus."

You fuckwit, Julian wrote all the Strokes songs too. I don't think his dad "bought" his songwriting ability.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 5:53 PM

No, he just bought his way into the biz. There are plenty of talented people out there, its just that not all of them have parents that can bankroll their careers.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 6:22 PM

Pitchfork and likely quite a few other sites are at least partially pay-to-play. If that doesn't totally destroy any cred they supposedly have, I don't know what does.

Posted by norm | December 17, 2010 7:49 PM

And our little techno Tiny Tim, Suf, at 25?

Posted by Brian | December 17, 2010 8:07 PM

11:21..... I agree that MGMT's "Congratulations" is a masterpiece, and that people are stupid.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 9:06 PM

I'm much more interested in individual people's lists, more specific. BV couldn't you do a few more of those. This is a pretty safe/dull list

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 9:50 PM

About the "BNM"/8.0 and greater debate...
It's not realistic to expect any website, magazine, etc yr end lists to be an exact reflection of how they graded albums during the yr..
I would think the former's a quick assessment with only a few people on the staff having a say..
The yr end lists are probably collaborative with more input taken from the entire staff..

Total Life Forever has been a major snub on every American list this yr so I'm not suprised it happened here too.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:26 PM

"Vampire Weekend is on everyone in New York's shit list right - that stupid "Holiday" song plays WHENEVER YOU GET IN A TAXI!"

that is so fucking annoying. i hate paying a taxi to watch ads.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 3:14 AM

Phyto-Nutrients is what you need... I can tell by your sluggish disco moves you are deficient. Here, I will give you a lil bit, the next song is good and you are gonna need it when the bassline comes on. Let me borrow you spoon, I will hook you up.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 3:24 AM

My friend played the new mgmt album in his car and I couldn't stop laughing. The most tone-deaf, unlistenable garbage I ever heard. Nothing on the record is even approaching a real song. You think by calling it avant garde or expirimental makes up for how bad it is?

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 10:32 AM

that charlotte gainsbourg album came out in 2009.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 10:35 AM

How were there 9 better albums this year than "The Monitor"?

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 11:20 AM

Wolf Parade should be on this list somewhere (anywhere!). And the new LCD album is absolutely worthless. Not sure who paid off every reviewer in the country to heap praise on that pile of crap.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 11:56 AM

Popmatters.com has " The Monitor" in their top ten and" Have one on me" at 12 yet The monitor got a 6/10 and Have one on me 4/10. In the posting for have one on me they give a disclaimer. "The 4/10 reflects the opinion of one critic, where as the 12th best album of the year reflects the opinion of the entire staff." I bet much is the same with pitchfork bnm albums that did not make year end lists.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 11:58 AM

Kanye West is a nagger.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 12:03 PM

Titus should definitely have been number 1. I still don't see how that band is not more popular after two incredible albums, and a live show that never dissapoints.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 12:13 PM

"My main gripe with the album is the way too low vocals on the first track. I understand the hush vox into louder music but this just sounds like bad production. Anyone else??"

James Murphy did that to make people turn it up. He talks about it in a few interviews one of which was on Npr. When I drive with my sister we always play the song and are like lets crank this shit up. But, the downfall is the ability to blow out your speakers. If there ever was a song to blow out your car speakers because of unexpected volume, this is it.
