Sheila E and Prince

As previously mentioned, Cassandra Wilson announced she would be playing with Prince on 12/15 only, and it was unclear if Janelle Monae would actually be at more than one show. She won't...

Prince has announced his guests for the first four dates of his highly anticipated "Welcome 2 America" performances. Joining him for his first performance on December 15th at the Izod Center will be jazz bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding and R&B artist Lalah Hathaway. Also at Izod, Prince will be joined by Grammy winning jazz performer Cassandra Wilson and funk saxophonist Maceo Parker on December 17th. For the first performance at Madison Square Garden on December 18th, comedian Sinbad and famed bassist Larry Graham and his band Graham Central Station. That night only, Sheila E will join Prince on stage. On December 29th at MSG, fans will be treated to Twin City legends Mint Condition and recent double-Grammy nominee Janelle Monae.

Due to overwhelming demand, Prince recently announced an additional date at Madison Square Garden on January 18th, the guests for this show have yet to be announced.

Tickets are still available to the two NJ shows and the January MSG show. The list of dates with openers, and some videos, below...

Sinbad is a comedian? Don't you have to be funny to be a comedian?

sha-boogie billionaire

Mint Condition? Damn, that's a throwback.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 2:42 PM

man, he should get yo la tengo to book his guests. although, i might take sinbad over eugene mirman - and i HATE sinbad.

Posted by I Wanna Sing-A | December 14, 2010 2:45 PM

YES LARRY GRAHAM!

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 2:49 PM

I fear for these shows.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 2:53 PM

this is so frustrating. are they opening the shows, or are they coming out with him, or both? It's kind of important, bc if it's just Prince with guests interspersed throughout his set, then that means we need to get there alot earlier than at least i plan on arriving.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 2:54 PM

sounds to me like openers, except for Sheila E

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 2:55 PM

sinbad... man oh man. might have to scalp my ticket now.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:05 PM

Frustrating? How about for once you don't act like a total d-bag and actually show up to something on time.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:05 PM

Sinbad will be jamming along side with Prince mid set on the conga drums!

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:08 PM

3:05 it sounds like 2:54 is the member of your band that is always late to shows, practices, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:08 PM

No, 2:54 is the a-hole who will show up into 4th song, annoy everyone in his row and talk during the duration of the show...just to say "he was there".

saw larry graham open for prince years ago 90-93ish, he killed it, had the full band marching through the audience while just slaying the bass.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:45 PM

@2:38

you don't have to be funny to be a comedian...

some of the biggest names in the business are the most unfunny.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:50 PM

3:35... HOLY CRAP THAT'S AMAZING!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:54 PM

That setlist makes me regret not picking up tickets. Holy shit!

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:57 PM

i can't believe he's playing the Bird and Jungle Love... i'm gonna have to bring a change of pants

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 3:59 PM

is that setlist for real?

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 4:13 PM

it would appear so... all the other setlists around that date on setlist.fm are similar in nature, but different songs/order on some nights.

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 4:16 PM

that is a fairly mind-blowing setlist!

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 4:32 PM

That's a very typical Prince set list. Plays The Time often.

Posted by I Wanna Sing-A | December 14, 2010 4:44 PM

Lotsa covers in that set

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 4:51 PM

well considering he pretty much IS the time, it makes sense

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 4:53 PM

how late do shows run at the Izod Center? anyone know?

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 5:10 PM

Are the security pat downs substantial at IZOD? I got tickets for tomorrow and was wondering if I should try to smuggle in a little Tupperware. Dancing to prince makes me get a serious appetite, and I may need to load up on some phyto nutrients mid-set. Ya know what I'm saying?

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 6:14 PM

^ no I don't

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 6:34 PM

holy fuck, if he plays anything close to that i'm going to lose my mind. so psyched for saturday!

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 11:13 PM

would

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2010 11:31 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2010 9:17 AM

now you wanna get NUTS? C'mon... let's get nuts!

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2010 9:33 AM

party like its 1999...yeah ok

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2010 1:39 PM

^I will because 1999 was before this hummus bs took over this board!

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2010 1:51 PM

1999 was a good year for the tan.

-Sabra's released it's garlic blend.
-Mamouns opened it doors at the St. marks location.
-abundant rainfall in brazil made a swell chickpea harvest which drove prices down.

Hell Yea, I'm gonna party like it's 1999!

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2010 2:09 PM

i THINK prince is on at 9 tonight. first opener at 730, second at 810, over at 840, then prince at 9.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2010 5:36 PM

Prince went on 9:40, finished by 11:30. Good show. Recommended. Set list similar to the one reprinted above. "Housequake" FTW.

not a good place to smoke up. Crawling with New Jersey state troopers. I never saw one before so I didn't know how gay their gray wool uniforms are, like, they're practically Toms of Finland costumes. It made me wonder if the Bruce Springsteen song "Mister State Trooper" is secretly about cruising for cop love at rest stops.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 1:20 AM

Yea. I agree with above comment. ^
The state troopers were in force and some people smoked up in front of and security came rolling in quick with the flashlights and angry voices. If you gonna John Blaze up, do it in the parking lot.

But on a positive note, prince was completely amazing as was to be expected. The sound was also really good for a stadium too!

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 1:51 AM

No Little Red Corvette, 1999 or Let's Go Crazy. He said something about the cerfew and ended the show abruptly after Le freak. Overheard an usher saying he got on 30 minutes late.

Show was empty...all the $20 section ticket were upgraded..I had Sec 242 Moved to 125...Lower level even was maybe 60-70% full while upper was 20% full...

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 8:08 AM

I guess New Jersey just doesn't get Prince. The New York shows are gonna be insane. Can't wait for Saturday!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 8:34 AM

Nice they got "If I was...," guess we won't see that on Sat. Oh, well. It's going to be a love bizarre!

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 9:03 AM

lalah hathaway was awful.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 11:02 AM

and MSG has no curfew.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 11:19 AM

does he not really ever play "i could never take the place of your man"?

also - if he plays Partyman on saturday, prepare to watch me lose my shit

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 11:41 AM

MSG is union, so anything past a certain time is bill overtime and costly.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 11:42 AM

Prince was great but his band wasn't, and yes, lalah hathaway was awful. Still worth going.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 2:20 PM

Who gives a shit about you people going nuts over a stadium show. Lame. The real event was after in the hospitality suite backstage where 50 vip people were picked to watch a 95 minute aftershow.

Would have killed to be in that.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 2:41 PM

no one cares what you think 2:41. where else are you gonna see Prince you idiot. sorry we can't all get VIP private parties and brag about it on BV, you stupid douche

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 2:51 PM

hi,

still have a few prince tickets that i am trying to sell for Madison Square Garden, they are VIP and i am selling them for face value, 500 per. A few friends cant make it so now i have extras.

Posted by angela | December 16, 2010 5:37 PM

Angela, email me! mrxr11@gmail.com

Posted by MR | December 16, 2010 5:57 PM

it really wasn't that empty at izod. they had whole sections up top in all fours corners roped off bc of the stage setup and the scaffolding that would block your view of the stage. but of the areas with people, i would say they were 80-85% full.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 12:05 AM

what time will prince go on tonight at msg?

Posted by jon | December 29, 2010 9:03 AM

@9:03, my guess is 9, but janelle monae is probably not to be missed.

Posted by andrew hansen | December 29, 2010 10:19 AM

where is the genius playing now? aftershow? cmon!!!
