setting up the stage @ Izod Center (via)...
Prince

"Do you want me?" Prince sang shortly into his concert at the Izod Center, his first of two shows here before he performs on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. He knew the answer would be an affirmative roar. And his opening song was a boast: "Laydown," from his most recent album, "20Ten" (NPG), announced, "From the heart of Minnesota/Here come the purple Yoda" and matter-of-factly asserted, "Everybody wanna be me." [NY Times]
Prince kicked off his "Welcome 2 America" NJ & NYC tour last night at the Izod Center in NJ. The next show is at the same venue on Friday. Last night's 2-hour setlist and a video below...

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 4:53 PM

This setlist is out of this world. Heard it was cut short because of curfew?

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 4:54 PM

What time did he start?

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:10 PM

kinda a meh setlist

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:10 PM

Any setlist with "She's Always in my Hair" is fucking awesome. FACT.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:12 PM

i want to hear the entire purple rain album at msg 12/29. make it happen prince.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:12 PM

I didn't even know all these songs, buyprinces stage presence is the best I've ever seen!

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:18 PM

"This setlist is out of this world"

Oh wow, you are a complete idiot as are most anyone who says this setkist is out of this world. If you think is an insane setlist then you have not seen Prince very many times in concert. For people who have seen him many many times they have heard these songs ad nauseum. Still great of course but nothing out of this world by any means.

I guess that is what the afterparties are for. The really dedicated fans who want something special rather than to watch his stadium hits/usuals revue. Like the lucky 50 people last night who got the 95 min after party performance in the izod hospitality room backstage.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:29 PM

He hit the stage at exactly 9:36pm. Seriously. No hummus or Daft Punk with that. 9:36pm

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:29 PM

The best thing about the backstage party was obviously the abundance of gourmet hummus platters. Prince has very high taste and it was truly a delicious blend.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:32 PM

5:29, you're being really gross.

I'm a huge fan, and I love his shows, and I've seen him a bunch, but I've never seen him do "All the Critics..." or "She's Always In My Hair" or "Insatiable". I'm sorry if I offended your fandom with my comment? Fuck, I mean, it's a good looking setlist. Stop being such a jaded bitch of a fan and let people enjoy something for once. Suck Prince's dick while you're back there in the hospitality suite. Maybe he'll play "Shockadelica" for you or some shit.

Posted by 4:54 | December 16, 2010 5:36 PM

when daft punk played at my house (the amount of smoked meats I left out attracted them like rats. Let me show you the ropes kid, I'll show you the ropes) they opened with a 45 minute version of When Doves Cry. They mashed it up with Little Red Corvette and Seasons in the Abyss.

Then Dennis Miller did a 95 minute monologue in the Izod hospitality suite (aka my downstairs bathroom) and I didn't even have to pay $200 a ticket. And Daft Punk played every song I wanted Prince to play.

So suck it Prince Paul. You are a has been. Get the Gravediggaz back together.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:42 PM

I really want to hear that Controversy/Housequake on Saturday.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:51 PM

5:42p - you're embarrassing yourself

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:53 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 5:59 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 6:05 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 6:06 PM

Saturday at MSG he's gonna cover Ween's Let Me Lick Your Pussy!

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 6:36 PM

YES Didn't he play Batdance at some point?

Posted by Massagem Relaxante | December 16, 2010 7:37 PM

wake me when Kim Bassinger comes out and does the Bat Dance.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 7:44 PM

Seriously, Fart Hard.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 8:00 PM

The set list is great for general audiences and casual fans, but kinda dull for his diehard fans. But Prince doesn't do shows for his diehards like he did in the 90s, early 2000s. That's not where the money is.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 8:30 PM

where in the hell is the hummus??

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 8:34 PM

The hummus is abundant in the bedford to driggs stops on the L train... And also rather common in the east village and the lower east side.
Chelsea and meatpacking have fancier hummus blends if that's your thing, but stay out of staten island and the Bronx... It's a hummus wasteland. And on a final note, never go to long island, although you may find an occasional hummus stand, the people from that god forsaken place will certainly give you indigestion.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 8:41 PM

these are the worst comments on bv i have ever seen i dont know why i keep clicking and adding to the problem i dont know!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 9:32 PM

^amen. The level if stupidity in this world increases exponentially by the day. hummus. who. daft punk. meh...Jesus Christ grow up kiddies and get a real life. Go jerk off- even that would be more productive and keep less of your kind from entering the world. no stfu...

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 10:05 PM

I am not a "kiddie", but a college educated person that thoroughly enjoys the hummus. Perhaps you haven't tried it before? Once you do, I'm certain you will join the fold.
In the mean time, put a purple rain record on and dance the night away in celebration of the delightful snack you shall be trying out in the coming days. And although you may not be able to dance for long, rest assured that once you start with the hummus the phyto-nutrients locked within the chickpea will keep your feet sliding across the dancefloor for hours without tiring. Xo

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 10:29 PM

At the post-show party, Prince sucked hummus off of my toes.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 11:32 PM

Too many obvious choices. I can do without Purple Rain and Kiss for the hundredth time.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 11:37 PM

Purple Rain never gets old. And the version of Kiss he played was really different then the one on the album.

Posted by Anonymous | December 16, 2010 11:54 PM

ok set list but keep in many of these songs were just a chorus or two in a medley. He only played "Uptown" a minute, then everybody sat down. People sat down for most of the show, especially since most of the filler was terrible slow jams like Shhhh, Insatiable and Scandalous.

He also left the stage for some of the songs, which were solo showcases for the terrible backup singers. His band fucked up a lot of chords, I don't know how long they've been playing together.

She's Always In My Hair and the Beautiful Ones were great.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:19 AM

^ 12:19 doesn't understand the genius of prince. Every song was incredible. He was on fire and had the Izod center completely under his thumb. This concert was A 10 out of 10 chickpeas.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:22 AM

there were basically 9 great songs: The Beautiful Ones, U Got the Look, Nothing Compares 2 U , She's Always in My Hair, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Adore , Purple Rain, Kiss, Sometimes It Snows In April. The others were filler or medley snippets.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:25 AM

Uptown is no filler!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 7:41 AM

Cumt.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 7:55 AM

If hummus could speak, it would let you know that I gently sat on Santa's face last night while listening to the Purple One. What remains to be seen is an immense elephant-like orgasm made into the cheese that I will indeed serve from in between the space of my two front teeth. Also, I want to have relations with Carol King and that bitch from Fox And Friends. Happy holidays.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 8:01 AM

Prince is a mong. Kanye West is a mong.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 8:29 AM

i think it's safe to say that hummus guy is mentally challenged

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 8:49 AM

And I was like, "meh."

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 9:01 AM

No Esperanza Spalding pictures? What a lame post.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 9:28 AM

Hey BV, if you charged a $5 annual fee to comment on this site, I'm sure there would be a drastic decrease in the rampant juvenile comments.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 9:30 AM

Prince/Tay Zonday sextape.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 9:39 AM

Why the hell would someone pay $5 a year to comment on a website. Ridiculous.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:11 AM

ya i was a little put off at the cover songs he sang...but he plays his shows for himself not for us and really he is the on that needs to enjoy himself...or we wont enjoy him...he is a more spiritual man now, the songs we want to hear are now against his religion....his set list is arranged many years after he went through what he was going through when he originally wrote them...but we love prince for his vibe, his voice, and his FUNK...the set list barely had in NJ izod no funk...minimal funk...I wish he would hav just played the guitar all night, he thinks he can walk out on stage and thats enough..its not just the set list thats disappointing but the opener put us to sleep, and after he played covers he finished with a song...that left us all hanging..."you can always get waht you want."then dissapeared and said good night...we were all like what? is this an intermission? the show was dead...but all that said...prince is a delicious being...and we just want more of him...but he is done giving himself over...and so he should lower the price of tickets in that case too...

Posted by dakini | December 17, 2010 10:39 AM

COMPUTER BLUES!!!! The purple one's gutiar work in that song is unreal.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:41 AM

i meant "you CANT always get what you want"....so he never promised anyone to sing the same ole songs his whole life..but if you are going to leave us salivating dont play covers...just have a fucking jam session and send the choir and angels home if they cant vibe...he is very low key...yawn...

Posted by dakini | December 17, 2010 10:46 AM

it's computer BLUE (singular) and yeah, that song RIPS

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:55 AM

rumors coming from a couple sources that Prince's "encore" (if you want to call it that...) at MSG tomorrow night is Purple Rain front to back... can't wait to see what happens.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 10:56 AM

may i criticize fans for sec? its not all about prince its about the energy of the space he is playing in...we need to freakin cut loose and have a good time and move da body...if you aren't dancing and chanting and instead going to a show with an expectation and if its not met you still cant have a good time critical brain type of thinking ... meanwhile u just stand there being a zombie..well its not just all about that...the security people and the venue itself lends way to a modest show.....the fucking venues are so uptight dont think you are gonna get any "scandalous" tailgating at the izod or MSG

Posted by dakini | December 17, 2010 11:42 AM

we all want prince to suck whatever "he wants" off our toes...my guess that might only happen in Brooklyn!!
I danced in Princes club in Minnesota in the 80's it played funk soul electricity had great time. time has moved on ...lol

Posted by dakini | December 17, 2010 11:48 AM

Purple Rain from front to back? THAT would be outrageous but seems highly unlikely. Has he ever done PR front to back?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:12 PM

it does seem highly unlikely... but that's what i've been told from two different sources. apparently he wants to just plain blow NYC away, what better way to do it?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:18 PM

where are the good/bad places to sit as the stage is oriented. i have friends with 2 extras on the right side but wasnt sure where the best views would be. thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 12:42 PM

its a great show...just dont be attached to a set list.. Prince does succeed in celebrating the divine feminine in us all..not the pop culture fem...but the divine fem...

Posted by dakini | December 17, 2010 12:43 PM

i am so fucking ready to have my mind blown and face melted tomorrow night

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:22 PM

Someone mentioned to me the Purple Rain encore and I couldn't believe it. Kind of excited to read it here too, it's either a well executed rumor or the truth.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 1:32 PM

Just imagine Prince reading our humble little comments about the PR encore rumor...and laughing his ass off.

As cool and diverse a performer he is, he's not into gimmicks really, now is he?

Not happening.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 3:33 PM

3:33 = Prince

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 4:07 PM

i was shocked at how many empty seats there were at izod.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2010 4:15 PM

it really wasn't that empty at izod. they had whole sections up top in all fours corners roped off bc of the stage setup and the scaffolding that would block your view of the stage. but of the areas with people, i would say they were 80-85% full.

Posted by Anonymous | December 18, 2010 12:02 AM

There are tix avail on TM right now for tonight's show. Just grabbed two in sec 225.
