Crass 2011: Gizz Butt on guitar, Beki Straughan on vocals, Steve Ignorant, Bob Butler on bass and Spike T. Smith on drums

Crass were an English punk rock band that was formed in 1977, which promoted anarchism as a political ideology, way of living, and as a resistance movement. Crass popularised the seminal anarcho-punk movement of the punk subculture, and advocated direct action, animal rights, and environmentalism. The band both utilised and advocated a DIY punk ethic approach, producing sound collages, graphics, albums, and films. Crass also criticised mainstream culture and attempted to subvert it with messages promoting feminism, anti-racism, anti-war, and anti-globalisation.-[Wiki]
Crass called it quits in 1984 and left an indelible mark on punk culture today. They self-released all of their LPs, and now frontman Steve Ignorant is preparing to reissue their output, against the wishes of some original members:
Ex-Berliner: Are the other members of Crass concerned about what this [European] tour and Crass reissues might be doing to their reputation?

Steve Ignorant: Well, some of the members are. There are three members who are totally against these re-releases, and I don't think they've got any idea whatsoever about how important those records are to people. I just don't understand how they can sit there and say, "No, there shouldn't be these releases. The only releases that should be allowed are the original vinyl." Well, a lot of people don't have record players anymore. Or they can download off the computer - well, not everybody's got a computer. I just think... I mean, why shouldn't they be available to people?

As mentioned in the question above, there was also a tour. Steve Ignorant assembled a new band to play Crass songs (lineup of new band members above, note that Penny Rimbaud is not among them), and they already went on a European tour. Now, Crass, billed offically as "Steve Ignorant's The Last Supper: Crass Songs 1977 - 1984" will visit North America for a tour that will include a NYC show on March 10th, 2011 at Santos Party House "with very special guests". Tickets are on sale. If you consider this Crass, then the Santos show will probably be Crass's first U.S. show in thirty years. They reportedly played NYC in '78 or '79. All current tour dates are below.

Steve Ignorant recently dropped The Rest is Propaganda, a new book writtien with Steve Pottinger that has given way to book talks across the UK. The book is not a history on the band, but an account of "how Stephen Williams became Steve Ignorant".

Penny Rimbaud, who is ok with Steve playing Crass songs and with the reissues, also just released a book. Penny and Steve both recently talked to Vice about their non-Crass-like legal battle with other members.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:12 PM

Guest guess- Little Annie? She lives in NYC and recorded EP's for Crass. It's also the night before Current 93 plays two dates at the same venue...hmmmm

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:16 PM

This shouldn't happen. Ever.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:18 PM

I have a Crass button/pin and my AIM buddy icon is the Crass logo. Not sure I'd go see them though.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:22 PM

Not saying there's anything nefarious about this, but it's completely false to say that without these new reissues you can only get CRASS records on the original vinyl pressings. Southern's been keeping most of it print for years.

I'm too old to wear a Crass t-shirt

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:26 PM

Then you're too old.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:29 PM

Unless you're living in the gutter, are a full blown heroin addict, have a dog and your parents think you're dead, since you've been out of the loop for the past 15 years ... you shouldn't be wearing a Crass t-shirt.

Shittiest band of all time, on par with Milli Vanilli. Crass are Crass.

Posted by Manca Mulas | December 1, 2010 1:39 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:53 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:57 PM

hehe coney island high... place was awesome. you know what's up

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 2:01 PM

Dear 1:34, you may think you do, but you obviously don't know anything about Crass, so save it for your Facebook friends who think you're cool for introducing them to new alternative music.

Any Oi band is ten times better than any punk band ever thought about being but to say that Crass sucks is like saying any punk or Oi band sucks without these band all of you high and mighty complainers would be sitting around in Deep Purple shirts. Let them tour if you don't wanna go don't

Posted by nolasa1972 | December 2, 2010 8:51 AM

Will not be the real crass of course, n that is z good thing, special guest already listed will make this a cosey night of a time long ago, the kids will if course still be Crass from the sound of the postings listed here!

Posted by Jimitits | December 2, 2010 10:52 AM

I am no Crass historian, just a long time band guy! if Steve Ignorant and Penny co-founded the band and she is ok with his endeavours, thats all that is needed! If Steve wrote the lyrics, then they're his songs, he can play them under whatever name he wants!! be it Crass or whatever!! Who cares who is original or not, bands change members constantly!! Its not like he got a bunch of young kids off the warped tour to play.

Posted by Rob Farmer | December 2, 2010 1:27 PM

cash in now! crass always sucked. let the reunion trend continue!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:40 PM

I am a Crass historian. Penny, aka Jerry, is a dude and Steve only wrote the songs that say 'shit pit' or 'pit of shit' in them. Punk is dead. Again.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 6:28 PM

Hot Topic is going to make a killing off of the reunion tour shwag. Yayyyy capitalism!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:54 PM

$20 to see CRA$$(Steve Ignorant's solo debut!)

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 10:00 PM

I can't believe this is happening in my lifetime! Hopefully I'll be there to witness it.

Posted by Emily Adams | December 3, 2010 1:18 AM

Ugh. Crass were a great group, the only real 'punk' group in my opinion. They lived completely according to their politics, not just posturing like the clash or the sex pistols, they had real integrity. I'm proud to wear s crass shirt/patch.

But this? Ugh. I don't know.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 11:45 AM

It's unbelievable how CRASS all you effing Yanks are. Steve has done this tour in the UK and Europe and it's been great, I saw two of the shows myself. He never said this was CRASS, that's your typical greedy Yank promoters trying to rip people off and sell tickets. He formed the band with Penny, he wrote songs like "Do They Owe Us A Living" and "End Result", yet because you bought a Crass album you think you have the rights to tell him what to do? A band like Crass who gave and gave and gave and never took anything for themselves, yet you object to his right to do one tour celebrating a band that he created and that meant so much to him. You really think he's getting rich playing poxy rock clubs? Next time you try to think you should turn on the lights first.

Posted by Rita | December 19, 2010 8:51 AM

The most influential band in my life. I saw Stratford Mercenaries twice when they toured the states. That was awesome. I am not gonna miss this. If you don't appreciate Crass, you don't know shit about punk rock!

Posted by Felixxx | January 2, 2011 1:20 AM

This is going to rock!

Posted by Anonymous | January 8, 2011 11:48 PM

U negative Motha fukrs crass is one of the greatest mostly brilliant punk band ever formed, steve going to be there with some good members to play some the best and original songs ever made and u could bet I'm going to be there to witness this opportunity that I now I'm never going to get so fuk u noncrass fuk holes hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!

Posted by LAscum81 | January 11, 2011 2:03 PM

fuck all yu haters!!!!! this is fucking CRASS!!

Posted by sh(E)XXXX | January 25, 2011 2:10 PM

Rita is right. Steve is an artist, like it or leave it. That's what art is about. Freedom. Go if you want, stay home, whatever. I can't wait for the show because it'll be a great experience. I don't care what you name it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 1:46 PM

I've loved all things CRASS every since i first heard them 16 yrs ago, when i was 14. They've inflluenced my life every since then, and eveything i do, and have done, and will do. I think it's awesome that steve is doing this--- i just wish they'd have made a date closer to Tennessee, as to where i could go & see them!!!!!!

Posted by crassfan_lovecraft | February 8, 2011 2:19 PM

It will be cool to see Steve ignorant because of Crass & what they were. But im going to see the greatest band ever "Christ on Parade" opening foor Crass. Not everyone should attend this experience because its the real deal

crass allways sucked. they were a shit hippie band. the mad(n.y.) were more punk then they will ever be.

Posted by scott | May 4, 2011 1:14 PM

I'm depressed didn't have chance to see, even more hurt by the people who felt they needed to comment the way they did about Crass.I named my son after the guy who gave me my first Crass tape when I was 14. Ira Wolfe was his name, I got it at a bus depot in Timmins Ont. Played that tape till it bled. Now I've got to convince my son Crass is good. I sure he likes same crap above haters of Crass like. You have same taste in music as my 12 yr old.
