Watain

The rotting putrid stench of decaying flesh on skull filled the halls of Santos Party House last night (12/2), as the gods of Black Metal, Watain returned to NYC. The show, part of an ongoing tour with Goatwhore and Black Anvil (that was supposed to be with Behemoth and Withered and Black Anvil), also featured a set by Hamsoken, the latest project from Nick Forte of Rorschach.

The night easily belonged to Watain, whose bloodspattered (literally... my clothes are flecked with crimson) megawatt set was both lightning fast, and bulldozer tough. Every detail of Watain's set is devoted to the dark arts: tattered Mad Max style clothing, rotting corpses, candlelight, torches, smoke machines, scowls, corpse paint - they have it all and more. Goatwhore may have won the "loudest band" title for the night, but Watain won the most mesmerizing.

That's not to say that the support wasn't great. Goatwhore's live prowess is unstoppable and when the band broke into "Apocalyptic Havoc", that's when I first realized how rowdy this Watain/Goatwhore crowd would be; we got a taste during Black Anvil's set but this was next level. Black Anvil yet again impressed with their blackened thrash-and roll, something I hadn't experienced since their set with Eyehategod. Dudes rule. Hamsoken opened the night, delivering competent, primitive black metal that neither disappointed nor impressed.

More pictures from the uber-packed Santos are below...

What kind of idiot wears a Goatsnake shirt to a Goatwhore show?

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 2:08 PM

A classy motherfucker, that's who.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 2:18 PM

michael jacksons back?

@ 2.08 - an educator who lives on Long Island, that's a certainty. Long Live the Goat

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 2:29 PM

I remember Halloween.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 2:36 PM

More aesthetically driven than a Lady Gaga gig.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 2:44 PM

Watain was fucking awesome...the only band that fills the room with the smell of death before they go on...long live black metal

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 2:49 PM

ohh spooky..this band is so scary..hide your children from the boogie man

love how the dude from black anvil has a gorilla biscuits tattoo. i know he was in KYI but it still looks funny at a black metal show. love that band. fuck the haters.

The REAL desecration hits Santos 2 days from now, when Crowbar comes to town!

place legitimately stunk like shit, and although Watain was "punishing" their set was mediocre at best, poor song choice...also, at the end, they came back out to play an encore, walked off stage, and played some dumb organs for close to 10 minutes only to just end it and turn the house lights on...should have at least done one more song, I'm tired of bands played 65 minutes at most and considering it to be a "headliner" set

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 3:43 PM

These are by far the best Watain photos I've seen from this tour. Fantastic.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 5:12 PM

let's not get over ourselves here photos are okay :))

sick fucking night. that was a pure death ritual, not a show. total chaos worship.

ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS OF 2009 - DAVID SANDERSON

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 5:46 PM

Good show, though I agree that the song choice wasn't the best. One song off of Casus Luciferi? Weak. Yes, the photos are good, but it's also the first date on this tour?

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 6:37 PM

Whoa! too much for me.

Posted by games | December 3, 2010 7:38 PM

i loved it. the smell screwed with your senses and the music making in complete as far as entertainment goes. the show was mesmerizing, i don't remember stellervore, and if they played it i wish i didn't smoke that weed and would have recognized it. i liked the end of the show with the organs, but i was high. i thought it was funny. but no one yelled and stomped thier feet. if the crowd would have done that of course they would have played a second encore... why would a band do a second encore if they didnt?

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 7:43 PM

Now I'm feeling zombified

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 7:53 PM

i just noticed that the advertisement at the top of this page is 'brooklyn vegan' haha.. considering all the carcasses at the show thats hilarious.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 8:04 PM

Watain were incredible. Great show. None of the theatricality of the band would matter if the music wasn't amazing, and it was.

@3:01. Don't you have some animal-costume wearing indie band to say "meh" to in the comments section?

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 11:13 PM

I wonder if they like hummus?

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 11:48 PM

@ 12.3 / 11:13 "None of the theatricality of the band would matter if the music wasn't amazing, and it was."

Exactly. From the first fucking chord to the last last fucking drone. Delivered. In full.

P.S. @7:43 They did not play Stellarvore.

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 1:05 AM

brooklyn vegan writers are usually pretty good. But the metal writer here is pretty terrible. You write the same shit every time. "bla blah blah was unstoppable" "the mighty ____ was terrifying with their power riffs"

BV can you guys please get a decent metal writer who can do this awesome music justice.

Watain are always engaging live and put on a good show, but the venue choice was atrocious (too small, and come on...Santo's Party House for a "black metal ritual?" The hipster headcount at this joint was appalling). The band seems to have lost some of their edge, as well - I remember catching them on their first-ever US tour (with Angelcorpse!) and they were about a thousand times more intimidating and potent. I can still taste the pigs' blood they tossed out over the audience and into our faces at that gig...

Posted by grimkim | December 4, 2010 1:25 PM

Grimkim you're awesome but I disagree with you on all levels on this one.

The sound was fucking amazing, and the venue's name is completely irrelevant. Really, it that what bothers you, the name? Size wize - what would make you happy hun? Gramercy or Nokia, where you could relax on a comfy chair? This was the kind of show where you were either in the front or the back, end of story. Who goes to watain and wants to stay comfortable by the bar sipping on a white russian? Please...

Plus, they chose that venue because it was the only one that allowed them to do the whole procession with blood and rotting animal skulls - that was the whole point. I think Brandon did a great job choosing this place.

"the hipster headcount at this joint was appalling"

Perhaps, but maybe not everyone in NYC is as cvlt as you or as you might want them to be. People are people and everyone who pays for a ticket has the right to be there as much as you do. No offense, but i don't understand ppl who go to a show and then complain/make fun of the way the rest of the audience looks like/is dressed/age group etc. That's so f'n irrelevant.

"black metal ritual"

Apparently this was a miss too. Damn! Venue too small and had a stupid name, too many hipsters, Chinese neighborhood, etc. We had another killer show earlier this year with Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult in a better venue, classy Polish neighborhood, etc. But that one was goofy.

So I'm sorry hun but what makes you happy? Cuz I want to try it.

just sayin...

Posted by notasgrimstefan | December 4, 2010 4:19 PM

Too small? I'm kind of surprised that Watain could fill that place, especially considering Cannibal Corpse played there a week or two ago and only sold out a couple of days before the show.

I feel like any edge they lost was because they stuck to mostly newer songs. Not that the new stuff is bad at all, it's just different from the stuff on the first two albums.

There are hipsters at every black metal show in NYC regardless of venue, get over it and just enjoy the band.

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 5:45 PM

Had to miss this. Fuck.
Anyway, who's going to see Pentagram at Europa next month?

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 6:26 PM

Watain is sooo hot right now. Black metal is ironic now don't you know? It's your job to inflict pain on those hipsters.

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 7:14 PM

this is disgusting, why the fuck do people enjoy this shit

Posted by bear | December 4, 2010 9:17 PM

Imaginary Satan is funnier than imaginary Jeebus.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 1:38 AM

i was commenting before,,, and not like it matters. anyway.

it really was a great show. nothing is perfect, you take whats
thrown your way, and yeah anyone looking for the alpha omega moment is a bit of a disappointed human, as we all know there is no perfect moment, and even if there was it wouldn't be so for anyone else.

played great, smelled great, looked great. its entertainment. some of us like to meditate on death. this we get.

im glad i didnt miss stellarvore... thanks 12

on to the next moment.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 2:50 AM

Wow that looked like an absolutely insane and blasphemous night. Sadly I had to miss it but thanks to the recap and photos (which are intense) I feel like I was there and not subjugated to the stench. Some friends reported to me about feeling ill not long after the gig as it was so overpowering in Santo's in terms of the temperature, frenzied fans and putrid aroma of death. Yikes. I hope they return and play a larger venue like Gramercy or Irving Plaza next time.

Posted by PiercingMetal Ken | December 5, 2010 10:11 AM

Oh fuck off with your condescending bullshit Stefan. Say all that to my face next time - and do NOT call me " hun."

Posted by grimkim | December 5, 2010 12:37 PM

@6:37 PM

First date of the tour- what, you high? This was one of the last dates of the tour.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 12:55 PM

^Correct- This was the last date in the US and only two in Canada to go. Stefan wears his mom's underwear.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 1:58 PM

1) Hamsoken is not a good name! What is your Ham soken in? A nice marinade? BBQ? A salt water brine? Dorks!

2) The singer of Watain looks like the GWAR Girl. Seriously look at the makeup. There never seen in the same place at the same time. Just sayin.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 4:47 PM

Time for the Wantain's to get back to the facility at Randalls Island.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 10:05 PM

kim loves stefan. stefan loves kim.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2010 10:20 AM

the reason the hipster count was so high was becuz hipster lord Brandon Stosuy praises this band all the time. He sucks and so do Twatain

Posted by fukka | December 7, 2010 7:06 PM

my apologies about the post i made...not that it's an excuse but i was blasting watain and as as high as a satelite at the time.

totally sounded like a condescending dick, sorry kim.

and yes i do wear my mom's underwear

Posted by stefan | December 9, 2010 10:19 PM

Great show, but the sound was BAD. I have albums of all the bands so I know their songs, and could not make out the lead guitar of any of them (and I moved to several different positions in the club, including about 20' from the stage and center, right behind the pit). Only time you could hear the leads was during parts where the drums and vocals stopped, such as during Watain's slower moments. Really disappointing, especially in Watain's case where the lead plays a melody over the black metal drone on many of their songs, like the closer, 'Waters of Ain'.
