Yo La Tengo @ Maxwell's (Hanukkan 2008) (more by Natasha Ryan)
Yo La Tengo

Thanksgiving is not even a week past, but Hanukkah is already here and that means eight Yo La Tengo shows at Maxwell's in Hoboken. One for each night, they shed a sweet fucking setlist and opener and comedians and special guests and charities and mixtapes and who knows what. You never really know what you're going to get until it happens, but we can try and figure it out. Who will open each show?

Well, we already know The Parting Gifts are scheduled to appear on night two.

12/1 -
12/2 - The Parting Gifts & ?
12/3 - ?
12/4 - ?
12/5 - ?
12/6 - ?
12/7 - ?
12/8 - ?
Who else seems likely?

The Greenhornes played Bowery Ballroom last night (11/30) and have nowhere to be until December 5th. Ted Leo kicks of a tour on 12/2, so if he's a special guest, it has to be tonight (12/1) or 12/5 (his night off). He's back in town on 12/6 to play Terminal 5 with the New Pornographers, but there's no way he could do T5 and Maxwell's in one night (and he's back on tour right after). The New Pornographers (AC Newman and Neko Case included) on the other hand have almost every single other night of Hanukkah free (and AC Newman's show with John Wesley Harding isn't until December 17th) (John Wesley Harding is free all days except 12/5).

Kurt Vile plays Knitting Factory on December 3rd and has all other days of Hanukkah off. Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, and Pat Sansone are playing Bowery Ballroom on 12/4 and Tarrytown on 12/6, but are free on 12/3 and 12/5. Nels Cline is in NYC on 12/6, and is free 12/7 and 12/8 (but it doesn't look like he'll be around the same time as the other members of Wilco unfortunately).

The Feelies have no conflicts or upcoming dates at all. Mission of Burma play Maxwell's and the Bell House in January, but you never know, maybe they'll come down for this too. Stornoway seems like a longshot, but they are in town on December 2nd and free 12/1, 12/6 and 12/7. Warpaint play Manhattan on 12/1, Brooklyn on 12/2, Philly on 12/3 and DC on 12/4, and then are free after that.

Titus Andronicus, who by the way are opening for Passion Pit at Wellmont Theater on 12/30, have to be in Florida to play a show with Superchunk on 12/4, but are otherwise free. Superchunk have from the time they finish that Florida show until 12/9 to get to Toronto to open for Broken Social Scene. Superchunk are next scheduled to be in NYC in March to open for Bright Eyes who recently popped up as a guest at a NYC show. Screaming Females, who opened for Yo La at Brooklyn Bowl recently, are recently home from Europe and totally free.

Jim Gaffigan is not the most likely comedian to show, but it would be a good warmup for his seven shows at Best Buy Theater. More likely are some mix of Eugene Mirman, Todd Barry, David Cross, Jon Benjamin, John Oliver, John Mulaney, Kristen Schaal, Hannibal Buress, Michael Showalter, Leo Allen, Mike Birbiglia, etc...

UPDATE: Night One featured an opening set by M. Ward and comedian Todd Barry along with Nash Kato of Urge Overkill as a special guest.

UPDATE2: Syl Johnson & JC Brooks are in town this week too

UPDATE3: Richard Buckner is around this week too

UPDATE4: Floored by Four aka Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Dougie Bowne & Yuka Honda, not to mention Cibo Matto, are playing NYC this week too.

All the Maxwell's shows are long sold out, but Craigslist is hopping. Leave tips and more ideas in the comments. Tour dates for most of the artists mentioned in this post, below...

Hey I'm a nerd who noticed the Terminal 6 typo! I'm going to mention it in a comment.

:::pushes glasses toward skull::::

Posted by Nerdlinger | December 1, 2010 8:11 AM

what about The Radio Dept as an opener?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:23 AM

is billy joel free?

i'm gonna go with billy joel.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:24 AM

lol, Titus opening for Passion Pit? Talk about blowing away the headlining act...

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:34 AM

i like titus and all... but the incessant praising of them in the comment section of BV is awfully suspicious.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:36 AM

@8:34

I'm a pretty big Titus Andronicus fan, but I've seen the crowd at a Passion Pit show, and I can't imagine that those 23-year old F.I.T. graduates are going to be that sold on the T.A. schtick.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:39 AM

For those that have gone to past hahukkah shows, do they sell tickets at the door the night of or people usually looking to get rid of any at the door???

I realy wanna go!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:51 AM

Isn't Warpaint playing at The Studio at Webster Hall tonight?

Posted by Joe | December 1, 2010 8:58 AM

wikileaks has posted all the openers

Posted by sike! | December 1, 2010 9:00 AM

Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby are opening one of the shows.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:05 AM

"For those that have gone to past hahukkah shows, do they sell tickets at the door the night of or people usually looking to get rid of any at the door???"

I have gone every year (except obviously the two years with no shows) and the answer is a definite no for the former question and maybe for the second question. Off nights like tonight will be easier.

Night one tonight!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:31 AM

Glad I sold my tickets for the Friday gig ages ago... Made a killing!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:33 AM

Clint Conley is opening Friday.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:33 AM

BPB/Cairo Gang! Please!

So amped for the BPB gig!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:38 AM

SO excited for these 8 crazy nights.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:40 AM

Xmas is better than Hanukkah.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:41 AM

is Clint really opening? That would be so awesome... though MoB would really just be mind blowing.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:41 AM

Hey 9:41 - Then buy tickets for the January gig!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:46 AM

already did :) i think it will be my 10th time seeing them. just saying a MoB/YLT bill would be GREAT

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:47 AM

"wikileaks has posted all the openers"

HA!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 9:53 AM

just go there the day of and trust me... there's ton of people selling. So many dorks buy tickets convinced they're going to sell them for $500 then end up day of selling them for below face value. 2 years ago, I got a ticket for $15. Hipsters don't like going 'all the way' to Hoboken. It's too far.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 10:05 AM

10:05 .. word up. I got mine for $12.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 10:17 AM

do you take the PATH to Maxwell's? the PATH is vewy scawy

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 10:25 AM

Anyone have set times for tonight or the other weeknight shows?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 10:27 AM

Hey 10:05 - Not sure what the hell yr talking about. I sold a pair online for $125 each. Do the math asshat!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 10:30 AM

10:30, oh nice, you're ripping off fans. you're awesome. good luck with life.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 10:33 AM

"Isn't Warpaint playing at The Studio at Webster Hall tonight?"

yes, oops. that and "terminal 6" fixed. thanks!

Posted by brooklynvegan | December 1, 2010 10:36 AM

I'm doing pretty well asshat - Thanks for asking!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 10:49 AM

Take the bus from port authority and it drops you off right across the street from Maxwell's.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 10:58 AM

how much does the bus from port authority cost and how long does it take? the walk from the path to maxwell's and back is brutal.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:13 AM

its the 126 bus I think it cost like 2.50 or so....if you go during off peak hours it will take 15 minutes max

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:23 AM

cabs in hoboken work on a zoned fare system, and path to maxwells is uber cheap. but don't come. jersey doesn't want you. observe the single river crossing per show maximum. its a tri-state commision law, steep criminal penalty for violations.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:23 AM

bus from port authority it is! thanks for the info

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:27 AM

The cab from the Path to Maxwell's is $5.
There is a cab line outside the Path station.
Getting one back to the Path from Maxwell's can be hard to find.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:32 AM

thanks for the bus info, 11:23.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:34 AM

this post is why brooklynvegan is endlessly indispensible. good work, bv. i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that 90% of us on here wouldn't know what to do without you. happy chanukah!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:34 AM

I second 11:34. Thanks bv!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:39 AM

Thanks for the Port Authority bus tip - already figured that one out on my own - but still looking for set times.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:43 AM

I would pretty much bet my life on the fact that the 10:30 idiot did not sell his tickets for 125 dollars. I have been going to these shows for years now and always buy my tickets on craigslist or outside the show night of. For face or less but never over. If this guy did indeed sell it for 125 then he probably did it right after they sold out and to some other moron who had no idea what was up.

That is not the norm for these shows.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 11:51 AM

is anyone looking for tickets for tonight? let me know.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:00 PM

Whoops I meant Map/Timetable

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:01 PM

Wow 10:30, you're such an entrepreneur.

What a retard.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:02 PM

In past years, when they used to announce the comedians/openers, tickets would sell more on nights with great guests. But the tickets also cost more.

Didn't the first run of shows only cost $10 and you get a free CD or 7"? Actually, I think the freebie was during the 2nd year.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:07 PM

iggy pop is night 4

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:14 PM

i went the 1st year they did this and they didn't have any gifts/exclusives. the 2nd year they had a choice of a 3 song holiday cd or a 2 song 7 inch record. david cross and david byrne were the surprise guests, and steve shelley sat in on drums.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:16 PM

I'm putting money on Jeff Tweedy sitting in one night.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:23 PM

The New Porns opened last time, and complained about not having been invited before*, so I doubt they'll be back.

Whatever happens, it's sure to be good. I heard from a reputable source that the lineup is the best one they've ever put together.

*Carl did say he "was so fucking angry" about not being invited before, "we totally know them". Funny stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:35 PM

"I'm putting money on Jeff Tweedy sitting in one night."

I agree. Tweedy would be a guest during the encore, not as an opener.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 12:36 PM

There are occasional tickets at the venue, but I'd get mine ahead of time, from someone like me:

Jon spencer is in europe for the whole month. He wont be at any of the maxwell shows

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:33 PM

Paul Simon plays Music from the Capeman on Friday

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:48 PM

Kanye!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 1:56 PM

Jeff Tweedy anyone?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 2:33 PM

Tweedy probably Fri or Sunday. How about Conor Oberst? He was in town last weekend at least.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 2:37 PM

GBV....perhaps? or at least Pollard?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 3:50 PM

They had Doug Gillard last time

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 4:12 PM

Yoko Ono!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 4:14 PM

gbv would be effin' killer

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 4:19 PM

Hanuka is the celebration of Pollard not running out of beer for 8 straight nights.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 4:55 PM

We're getting pretty close to show time. Ira might be getting ready to text Endless Boogie.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 5:09 PM

Alex Chilton was the greatest guest so far.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 7:29 PM

it is gonna be hilarious when the williamsburg fauxhemians realize the L train does not run all the way to hoboken

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 7:31 PM

Hoboken > Williamsburg

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 7:57 PM

Tonights opener is m ward! Comedian todd berry!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:10 PM

Williamsburg is a stain on the face of New York while presuming to be something more.
Hoboken at least knows it exists in the shadow of NYC.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:13 PM

If we simply stop talking about M. Ward, he will simply go away

Todd Barry seems to be there every Chanukah, and he is always funny

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2010 8:20 PM

Is hummus a good opening snack to a rock concert?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 12:08 AM

Do they have the opener listed at the door or do you have to go to the show to actually find out....

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 12:10 AM

They have it posted before the show at the venue. You could probably call them and find out a little bit before the show too.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 12:31 AM

For people that went tonight....
1) ANy tixs at the door?
2) Were there anyone selling extras before the show?
3) Set times???
830 m ward
930 todd barry
1030 ylt

???

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:05 AM

@1:05am

1) No, none at all.
2) Not that I noticed, but I wasn't really looking for any, so it's possible.
3) Those are pretty accurate, give or take a few minutes.

Great kickoff show! I wish you luck getting in to a future show, it's worth the effort!

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:13 AM

I won't ruin the surprise, but the opener for Saturday night is not indie rock (but has been covered here on BV a few times). If you don't believe me, initials are SJ and I'll be back on Sunday to tell you I told you so. Not Sharon Jones.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 1:57 AM

Is 1:57 saying the Saturday opener is Syl Johnson?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 2:30 AM

Any idea what time Yo La Tengo ended last night?

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:02 AM

monday - amy rigby / wreckless eric - they announced it during their show near d.c. last night.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:30 AM

@ 1:57 - bingo

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 9:39 AM

@2:30 - yup - playing in town night before.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 3:09 PM

why would mitch mitchell get his ass kicked

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2010 3:13 PM

Posted this in the Syl Johnson thread too, but apparently he's playing with them on Saturday:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/03/arts/music/03syl.html

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2010 10:49 AM

how will hall & oates play sunday night if they are at the beacon on sunday night?

does maxwell's have a heliport?

Posted by anonymous | December 3, 2010 1:53 PM

Jeff Mangum will open one of the remaining nights. Not sure which one yet but it will happen.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 3:37 AM

right 3:37. right....

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 6:37 AM

it must be true. he played a secret loft show last night

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 7:47 AM

bauhaus is opening tonight. they're in (hanukkah) parties.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 10:07 AM

Ha, not Bauhaus!

Anyways, my complements on figuring out it was Syl Johnson after only 33 minutes.

Let's see if I can make it harder. Tonight's band has a connection with YLT. Not just simply knowing each other or playing on the same bill. The initials would be a giveaway.

Wednesday's band is perhaps the biggest (in terms of venues they have been playing recently) ever for an opener. Not my cup of tea, but are very well liked on BV.

I (er, my sources) don't know Mon or Tue.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 10:57 AM

tonight must be mission of burma... i'm assuming the connection is clint producing Yo La's first album. of course, those initials WOULD be a big giveaway...

lcd soundsystem for wednesday? :P

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 11:28 AM

any rumours for Monday? Any real shot at Jeff Magnum playing? Always a great time. Thanks to YLT!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 11:34 AM

if mangum does play... that would be just so rad

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 11:36 AM

No way on Mangum, keep dreaming.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 11:36 AM

I saw Jeff at Superchunk in Brooklyn last month...maybe he is reconnecting. Hope he does come back around and play again.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 11:38 AM

Monday is Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby. Tonight is not Mission of Burma only Clint Conley from the band is playing.
Tues and Wednesday do not know but it is not Jeff Mangum. Last night's Mangum show was a one off for now. It was for the lucky few people annointed by King Ben of Ba Da Bing records to be allowed to see it. Brooklyn Vegan being one of those hence announcing it on twitter after the performance.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 11:44 AM

2:30 here. Just guessing, but are you saying those initials are either VW or YYY?

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 11:49 AM

does clint conley play solo shows? i'm not doubting you, i just don't see why MoB wouldn't play also

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 12:02 PM

Not to say whether Mangun is or isn't playing, but he was on the bill with YLT for that benefit show a few months ago.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 12:23 PM

Stop dreaming nerds. It is not Mangum. Believe me.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 12:34 PM

He could always be a special guest for a song or two. Hopefully not since I never cared for NMH.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 12:45 PM

^ not exactly something you should take pride in...

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 12:58 PM

I found out Wednesday's opener and 10:57's description was pretty accurate. Not saying who it is because they also aren't my cup of tea and I really don't want to see more douches there. Yes, Wednesday's opening band, while fine and liked by many here, is also liked by many douches who would spend a lot of money to see them in a small venue, then would get drunk and annoying and/or leave.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 5:24 PM

Bright eyes? Opener for wed

Posted by Anon | December 5, 2010 5:39 PM

Mission of Burma tonight!! 3 nights to go....

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2010 8:07 PM

can someone e-mail me the opener for wednesday? or just say it? was going to get rid of my tickets and do something with the wife instead, but if everyone's saying it's not something to miss then i won't.

john.smith.alias.1@gmail.com

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2010 12:59 AM

"tonight must be mission of burma... i'm assuming the connection is clint producing Yo La's first album. of course, those initials WOULD be a big giveaway..."

Wow, only 31 minutes this time. I guess my hints are too easy. Yup, Clint produced the first YLT album. I remember seeing Clint's band Consonant open up for YLT during the first Hanukah concerts.

As far as Wednesday's openers go, I really can't give any hints since they all will be giveaways. Honestly, not a band really related to YLT. Nothing to be excited about IMHO except that they are popular amongst the Pitckhfork crowd.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2010 8:25 AM

"can someone e-mail me the opener for wednesday? or just say it? was going to get rid of my tickets and do something with the wife instead, but if everyone's saying it's not something to miss then i won't."

You obviously are not a fan of YLT so you should sell your tickets. My wife understands my love for YLT and approves of me going to multiple shows.

If you need the openers to sway your vote, you really should just sell your tickets.
