MIA at Brooklyn Bowl (more by Chris Gersbeck)
MIA

M.I.A. released ("leaked") a new mixtape at 7pm EST on New Year's Eve. It features b-sides and rarities and is called Vicki Leekx. The nineteen song mix (which is actually a single track) features production from M.I.A., Danja, Munchi, Diplo, Blaqstarr, Switch, Rusko, Sugu Arulpragasam and So Japan.. Download it for the price of an email address.

Vicki Leekx (rhymes with Wiki Leaks) is the follow-up to 2010's / \ / \ / \ Y / \, which was recently awarded 5th "Most Underrated Album" of 2010 in the Pitchfork Readers Poll. MGMT were #1 on that list. MGMT were also #14 on the list of "Most Overrated" artists, and they have a new release this week too. Daytrotter released a live session by them today.

You can probably guess who got #1 on the "Most Overrated" list. Both Pitchfork lists in full and the VICKYLEEKX track list, below...

It wasn't underrated, it just sucked. I wonder who people hate more, MIA or Lauryn Hill? or Vermont Hippies?

Posted by TheSloot | January 3, 2011 5:27 PM

or themselves

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2011 5:51 PM

MIA underrated after being overrated for so long....

not to necessarily buy into any hype one way or the other, i actually thought 'the suburbs' was a great record. it really put forth a sense of being in the suburbs. it's an actual "album" and not a collection of singles.

"not to necessarily buy into any hype one way or the other,"

Why would anyone care if you did buy into the hype? Just say you like it. People who seem apologetic about what they like are pussies.

People that dare to criticize Todd P. are pussies - according to Todd P.

the suburbs IS a great album. I don't know why it would be classified as overrated. There are plenty of crappy releases in the past year, so for this to be number 2 is laughable. Also, Interpol was underrated? I am actually a pretty big fan, and I thought it was shit. They pretty much phoned that album in.

Posted by TheSloot | January 3, 2011 8:17 PM

The notable difference between 'underrated' and 'overrated' is the Yeasayer album. I concur: it's really good and for some reason didn't catch-on. Too bad.

Also: it's weird for brooklyn vegAn to snarkily look down his nose at MIA's email capture/collection operation. BV does the same thing all with lucrative email address lists he creates via ticket and album giveaways.

Hell yeah "Congratulations" was underrated.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2011 11:47 PM

Hey folks!

Yeasayer sucks.
Best Coast and Wavves? Wow. They reportedly smoke weed.
Sleigh Bells: One and done.
Joanna Newsom- This shit totally sucks. Rented it at my library and wondered, "WTF is everyone talking about?"
John Cougar Mellencamp sucks.
Beach House- Fucking boring as hell. WHY DOES THIS BAND GET SO MUCH ATTENTION?
Robyn- Why are all the blogs so hyped on this shit?

Have a great night!

Ok Ann On...you can say what you want about these flash in the pan, darlings of a generation or a moment (pot music for pot heads; Robyn for hook cravers; even Arcade Fire for the closeted homosexuals just waiting for the right time to come out)...but I won't stand for the John Mellencamp hate.

Nope. Not for a second.

Take it back or I'm coming over to your house where I'll stand ala "Say Anything" with a boom box playing "Pink Houses" till the neighbors start throwing shit. I'm. Not. Joking.

And I do have a life.

solid

If you think Suburbs is a good album, you should really give Village Green Preservation Society by the Kinks a listen. It's an actual "album" that also has interesting, memorable songs on it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 4, 2011 11:51 AM

The Arcade Fire continues to write absolutely horrid lyrics delivered with absolutely terrifying bravado that outstrips even U2 in its bizarre egomania. That band is great for people who aren't really into music.
