Portishead

According to a December 23rd tweet by Portishead's Geoff Barrow, Portishead are "doing some split headline shows with arcade fire next year , I'm really looking forward to it..proper band!!" That won't be the promised U.S. Portishead tour though as Geoff later explained "What i mean is that We will be playing with AF at some point next year it's not a tour though!! Sorry." and "The shows with AF are festivals in Europe or I think they are? Hope that helps!" Oh well, I think (stay tuned for the rest of the American dates when they are announced though).

As reported by Pitchfork, "there's going to be more [Jeff Mangum] shows scheduled in the future." Stay tuned for that too.

MEANWHILE, we know that Jeff and Portishead are both playing "I'll Be Your Mirror" in Asbury Park this fall. Tickets go on sale Friday 9am EST at SeeTickets and on Ticketmaster.

Hope both do separate NYC shows, don't really want to trek out to Asbury Park if I don't have to.

I cannot believe Geoff Barrow likes Arcade Fire. Welp, he's an old fart. Lapse of taste I guess.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2011 11:03 PM

I think the Portishead / AF dates are in Europe but I could be wrong..

a little research goes a long way. some follow-up tweets from barrow:

“What i mean is that We will be playing with AF at some point next year it’s not a tour though!! Sorry.”

"The shows with AF are festivals in Europe or I think they are? Hope that helps!"

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2011 11:38 PM

This will sell out tomorrow:)

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2011 11:51 PM

wow thats what portishead looks like

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 12:02 AM

Yeah I severely disapprove of the insinuation that Arcade Fire are playing ATP New Jersey. Wouldn't that make them the biggest band to play ATP ever?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 12:08 AM

Bonnnie Prince Billy added to Friday night lineup, his set will not conflict with JM's.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 12:24 AM

^ agreed. arcade fire wouldn't be caught dead in new jersey

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 12:26 AM

Guy....

Portishead r headlining Saturday/Sunday....

they're not going to pick AF to play.

AF is too mainstream now...seriously playing two nights at MSG?

I can only imagine where they will play here in Spring.....

any guesses?

that was never even close to insinuated!

In-depth Biography
The Japanese trio All Tomorrow's Party play rock with debts to both the classic rock of the '60s and '70s and the indie rock of later decades. Singing entirely in English, they mix fuzzy hard rock bearing progressive overtones with more delicate shades of folk-rock and psychedelia. Guitarist and singer Tetsuro Kitame wrote most of the material on their 2005 album, Yoo Doo Right, Yoo Doo Slide. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

Go drown yourself in a hummus vat, 11:12. Thanks for reducing my chances of getting tickets from about 15% to about 5%.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 2:32 AM

Still not even sure what my gameplan is gonna be behind snagging tickets.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 2:39 AM

I dont know too much about Portishead but are the two main members of the band sitting in the back and the guy upfront is their bodyguard ?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 8:48 AM

i don't know if i've ever even seen a press photo of the group, it's quite a good one anyway

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:09 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:10 AM

@9:10: Seetickets was the only place with the three days passes

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:11 AM

After I tried to order 5 times and it kept crashing, I got this:

Sorry, there has been a problem with your order

Please call 0871 220 0260 to confirm that your order was successful
We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:11 AM

I was refreshing on Ticketmaster for five minutes before and got NOTHING. Booked 2 through "seetickets"....I have no fucking clue where I'm sitting. That website looks so sketchy. I hope I don't get notices of nigerian transactions on my card in a few hours

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:11 AM

CONFUSED....when i clicked buy tickets on seetickets it took a while then crashed, but i got an email saying i ordered 2 tickets.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:12 AM

SEETICKETS WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST WEBSITE WHERE I EVER BOUGHT TICKETS AND WAS SCARED TO PUT MY CC INFO IN

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:13 AM

9:12, I got that too. This is scaring the shit out of me.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:13 AM

yeah--no luck on ticketmaster, but i just got 2 orchestra seats on seetickets.....hopefully? seems pretty sketchy

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:14 AM

seetickets still has Jeff Magnum available, singles though
i am afraid to use my cc info there, so not sure i will be buying them

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:14 AM

did see tickets give anyone their seat locations? my order just said 2 orchestra seats..

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:14 AM

I don't know if I have 100 tickets or 0 tickets right now. I really hope it's just two tickets. F See Tickets!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:15 AM

no, i didn't get a seat location from seetickets

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:15 AM

3-day pass booked through Seetickets...Woohoo!! Keep on trying, hope you all get through...Good luck guys!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:15 AM

seetickets was very confusing i hope i put all the right info in. even though it crashed im pretty sure i got 2 tickets because they sent me an email and i can track my order for 2 tickets on their site.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:16 AM

Just did a little paranoid research on the company I just sent my CC info to....they seem legit. They sold all the tickets to Glastonbury in 2007 and are a UK-based company so that's why the form might've looked odd (initials instead of a first name??).

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:17 AM

I like Portishead.

Posted by jonathan | January 28, 2011 9:17 AM

For once in my life I am kinda happy I chose Ticketmaster.

ticketmaster gives exact seat locations....seetickets.com is a uk based site for uk based shows. don't know what that means for shipping or anything but they're legit

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:22 AM

ticketmaster was $20 more than seetickets with fees

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:22 AM

LOL, I noticed that Ticketmaster was more expensive too. Fucking hysterical.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:22 AM

evidently BrooklynVegan readers don't read.

on the Seetickets website:

"Monday October 3, 7.00pm: Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) Paramount Theatre, Asbury Park, NJ. PLEASE NOTE: This is an allocted reserved seated event. Seats will be allocted on a first come first serve basis. The earlier you book the better your seats will be. You will be emailed within five days with your seat allocation."

so calm down everyone going crazy about them not saying where your seats are.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:23 AM

I've gotten tickets from seetickets before and they are legit

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:23 AM

BV gotta tell ya, from reading all these SEE TICKETS comments above, your readers are a bunch of morons!
would that be the festival's draw?
oh lord, get me back to the catskills years...

Posted by me | January 28, 2011 9:24 AM

Does anyone else think it's weird that See Tickets doesn't ask for your first name at all?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:24 AM

To the people who keep saying they "chose" Ticketmaster, YOU OBVIOUSLY WEREN'T TRYING TO BUY THREE DAY PASSES

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:25 AM

Sorry, there has been a problem with your order

Reason - YOUR TRANSACTION HAS BEEN DECLINED (R1)

Anyone else keep getting this message???
Fuck!!!1

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:26 AM

Bottom line...ATP has been doing this for years...you haven't! Do you really think they would be using a sketchy ticketing service?? Come on guys!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:26 AM

"your readers are a bunch of morons!"

I am a moron because Seeticekts kept crashing every time I tried to buy tickets, leaving me with no information about whether my order actually went through or not? And then when it didn't crash it gave obscure not-helpful messages. This makes me a moron?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:27 AM

Same thing here....server crashed...by the time I resubmitted, I realized I had an email saying I ordered my tickets...I got tickets...so...who cares...very excited, but now the 8 month wait begins...

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:28 AM

"This makes me a moron"

You are a moron because you didn't use Ticketmaster. You were too cheap to use a better service and now you have nothing. So yes, that does make you a moron.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:33 AM

just got two balcony seats through seetickets...

Posted by chris g | January 28, 2011 9:34 AM

What are you people talking about? Portishead is not sold out. Who cares about some crazy dude playing a solo set ... Portishead will be playing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:34 AM

wah wah wah wahhhhh

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:36 AM

First I was trying to buy with my AmEx and it crashed a few times. Then I finally got a message that they don't take AmEx, so i used by Bank of America Visa. That crashed a few times, then I got "duplicate info" messages. I took my name out of the address field and it finally went through. Then I just got a call from my bank asking me to verify I hadn't been robbed.

Posted by SEETHESETICKETS | January 28, 2011 9:38 AM

"You were too cheap to use a better service and now you have nothing. "

Ticketmaster DID NOT HAVE THREE DAY TICKETS. What don't you get about that?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:40 AM

yeah, I ordered through Seetickets, got an error message at first, I took my name out of the address, worked fo' me!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:41 AM

Just ordered a Saturady day pass through See tickets. Had zero problems. A few other friends had the same results.

You all must be fucking morons, but I guess that goes without saying.

Keep going through Ticketmaster and giving them your extra $$$. Its your parents' anyhow.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:46 AM

Having early bird access for being a member of ATP is so very sweet. My whole crew is locked down for the ride. Best of luck to everyone. Slackers stay home.

"Keep going through Ticketmaster and giving them your extra $$$. Its your parents' anyhow."

despite popular belief, most readers on this site are people in their 20's and 30's with decent paying jobs.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:48 AM

9:46 = a liar and obviously the same "moron" person from the other 2 comments. Also, it's 9:46. See Tickets was crashing at 9:00. You are the only moron.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:48 AM

I've been buying tickets through SeeTickets for years for European stuff and ATP's - It feels sketch but in the end I have never had a problem.

Hope everyone that wanted tix were able to get them!

Posted by darpino | January 28, 2011 9:49 AM

i just wanna know if there are gonna be nyc shows for portishead and magnum or not. it abso makes the difference between going to this atp fest or not.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:49 AM

"i just wanna know if there are gonna be nyc shows for portishead and magnum or not. it abso makes the difference between going to this atp fest or not."

dude, one day passes and the mangum tickets are really not that expensive. do yourself a favor and just get a ticket, if NY shows are booked, who cares? It will be an adventure to go some place out of your comfort zone.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:51 AM

Well after they told me there was a "problem with the order" I tried again and got two. Now I got two confirmations for a total of 4 tickets. See you on Craigslist.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:52 AM

^ I bet there will be one for Mangum. Portishead maaaaaybe.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:52 AM

This will sell out.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:54 AM

wtf.. bought 2 balcony seats from seetickets because orchestra was not available.. now it says they have orchestra tickets

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 9:59 AM

9:52 - the tickets are non-transferable.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:01 AM

I got two on tickettmaster for jeff mangum pretty easily. It would not go through in first five min though. Hopefully he will add dates in nyc proper though. I like asbury park but will be a pain to get there on a monday night.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:02 AM

$99 for a one-day ticket is expensive if the rest of the lineup sucks. Not to mention hotel and train fare. So really... you have to figure it's about $200 per person to see Portishead on Saturday night... which is OK if there are 3-4 other great acts that I want to see... but kinda shitty if all the other acts are going to be like Panda Bear and Grizzly Bear and shit.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:04 AM

I got 2 3-day passes on See Tickets with no problem whatsoever at about 9:45...The site was probably just overwhelmed when tickets went on sale at 9.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:07 AM

10:04's definitely got his finger on the pulse.

News to people who are only in this for portishead and/or mangum...they've both said they're gonna announce more dates. Leave ATP to those of us who know who shellac is...

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:07 AM

"Leave ATP to those of us who know who shellac is..."

with that attidude you better be at Maxwell's tonight. otherwise, FU

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:10 AM

magnum didn't say he was gonna announce more dates...just that he was excited to play this show. i wouldn't count on it. although he does appear in nyc every now and then. saw him play a couple of songs with olivia tremor control at bowery so he def shows up in nyc from time to time.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:11 AM

There's gonna be that Elephant 6 tour in the spring. There's a good chance Mangum will show for those.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:16 AM

"There's gonna be that Elephant 6 tour in the spring. There's a good chance Mangum will show for those."

doubt it

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:18 AM

The only way I see it happening is if ATP promotes a show after ATP like they did with SUNN/Boris Masonic debacle...but from what I can tell, that seems to be what the Monday show is all about. Portishead on the other hand, may do a few NY dates.

8 months from now, I will forget I just dropped close to 1k on tickets, be with friends in AP with a full lineup enjoying an Indian Summer and music. Why even bitch about it?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:18 AM

10:10 - I will be at the bell house tomorrow.

This is a tough call. Friday for Hawk and Hacksaw (the only band that matters imo), or go for the full-pass?

Posted by Cuse | January 28, 2011 10:44 AM

3 Day Passes. They will sell out. This will be the specialist music event of the year in America. If you have never been, you have no idea. If you have done years past at Kutsher's you probably already bought your ticket. Hate/troll/hummus all you want - you're missing the best party you can imagine. The scene puts New York City nightlife to shame.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:47 AM

...just checked on my accommodations...they are sold out...good thing I live in Jersey and got a buddy in ocean grove...oooph.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:49 AM

Don't think ATP has sold out at Kutshers....why would this one sell out?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:50 AM

Jeff Mangum + Portishead = sell out, big draws with cult fanbase. They are selling less three day passes than they have in years past (less than 1,600)

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:51 AM

"Don't think ATP has sold out at Kutshers....why would this one sell out?"

An ATP that is in metro area easily accessible by Philly, NYC and in a town that has its own base of GLBT/hipsters as it is.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:59 AM

I thought ATP Asbury has more capacity?
Or not?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 11:05 AM

11:05am:

Capacity room wise or venue?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 11:06 AM

So.... The drummer of neutral milk hotel trumps the actual songwriter of neutral milk hotel, cuse?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 11:06 AM

Capacity of Paramount theater where Mangum is playing is 1,600. Only 3 day passholders get into Mangum on Friday night so 3 day passes are necessarily capped around 1,600. Total capacity including day passes will be around 3,000 per day, comparable to Kutsher's but overall amount of 3 day passes available will be lower than Kutsher's I believe.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 11:07 AM

This one has almost twice the ticket capacity of kutsher's...though way more interest from people who just want to see the headliners and don't even know what ATP is, apparently...I just bought my three-day pass just in case; it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Something tells me by the time October rolls around and portishead & mangum have both presumably announced more dates lots of people will be looking to unload...but I guess I'm happy for the pr

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 11:09 AM

11:06, was being tongue in cheek. Tho I do love me some AHAAH.

I actually went to APHS, so know AP well and mom still lives around there. But the price is steep and I have no idea if I'll be employed then. Tickets aren't sellable?

Posted by Cuse | January 28, 2011 11:11 AM

-omoters that it's probably gonna sell out, since they lost their ass the last two years at kutsher's. I was just hoping if they landed portishead we'd be able to go back there, since it'd be a solid sellout...I'm gonna miss that fucked up, crumbling place. I'm excited to even be having another ATP in the us at all, but I don't think this can be as special an experience as the last three...hope I'm wrong, I guess.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 11:13 AM

"Not to blow half of you's minds but it's MaNGum, not MaGNum."

that's hilarious, been reading this thread all day and only just now noticed that

Guesses on where Magnum will be this year? My guess is T5 (ugh) or hopefully the BK Waterfront would be nice...

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 2:18 PM

again its Mangum not Magnum and it seems very unlikely he'd do T5 or a big outdoor show. the fact that he chose to play the seated theatre at ATP as opposed to the big convention hall (which is more T5 like) my guess is a couple of Town Halls maybe Beacon..

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 2:31 PM

Beyond psyched that this is going down in Asbury. Got a 3 day pass and a monday night ticket, and I live in Long Branch, so this is a fun little outing that's close to home injected with the fucking awesomeness that is ATP

Posted by Ray | January 28, 2011 2:34 PM

Good ideas for Mangum fall NYC touring:
United Palace Theater
Beacon Theater

In my wildest dreams:
Knitting Factory
Le Poisson Rouge
Summerstage (just to see the look on the tourists' faces)

If he's booked for a Bowery Presents venue, I pray it's MHOW not Bowery or Webster simply so its tougher for Manhattan casual-interest indie fans to come, as dick as that sounds. BUT NOT BROOKLYN BOWL seriously there should be a ban on loud-ass bowling during the actual performances.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 2:38 PM

ha! no way he'd play brooklyn bowl but it's funny because i thought of that too.

i'd say Beacon or United would be most fitting. MHOW would be great, but you know I saw OTC at Bowery in like '05 and he showed up and it was great

There won't be a NYC show. ATP is the 'NYC' area show.....

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 2:46 PM

if it was a full on band, billed as "neutral milk hotel", i guarantee you, it would be at terminal 5

Can someone else help vaguely confirm this because that would be sincerely helpful.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 2:51 PM

With mangum and ahaahs both booked, the most critical elements of recreatiing nmh are in place. Throw in a bass player and a horn section and no one will know the difference.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 2:56 PM

I have full faith in the determinative abilities of ATP organizers to attempt to book Olivia Tremor Control and The Music Tapes also. Maybe even sprinkle in a lil Circulatory System.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 3:03 PM

All I know is this event is already turning out to be "concert of the year" for one simple reason... Portishead!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 3:04 PM

atp is being moved to buffalo

Well, My Bloody Valentine played a city show after doing ATP ...

you guys don't know the first thing about the first thing...

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 3:23 PM

who's playing merkin hall?

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 3:30 PM

Everyone's an expert on this here BV!

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 3:45 PM

There was a $20 booking fee per ticket, plus $3 transaction fee tacked on to the 3 day passes through See Tickets. Don't know how other people bypassed those charges.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 3:47 PM

This post is NMH related:

I will say this does seem a bit like the Pavement reunion where tickets went on sale almost a year in advance and then more dates got added way ahead of the originally scheduled "Reunion Dates". First movers got f'ed in that whole Pavement transaction, lets see if history repeats. I guess what I'm saying is, EXPECT there to be earlier NMH or Mangum dates in NYC and you won't be bummed when they appear.

I bought my 3 day pass - hoping we can get some clarity on what Sat and Sun have in store...

2:38 pm is obviously a Brooklyn poseur.

"Casual-interest fans"? You think you are more worthy than others? If all you have to look forward to in your borough is live music, then you are living in a lame borough. Manhattan has much more to offer than these bands, all year round. Brooklyn hipsters, and their neighborhoods, are based around the sad fact that all you have to fill up your time is to go to shows, and brag about them on BV.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 4:31 PM

4:31 is a little defensive..

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 4:32 PM

If you think all people in Brooklyn are doing is going to shows, then you MUST live in Manhattan. Nice troll try though. ;)

people going to ATP only for Portishead=lame

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 5:24 PM

The Manhattan slob (4:31) doth protest too much

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 5:28 PM

Bridge and tunnel people will always be a few steps behind. You just cannot make it in Manhattan.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 6:08 PM

don't let Williamsburg ruin Brooklyn's reputation brooklyn is full of well-rounded, talented, good-looking people they just don't live in Willburg or Bushwick

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 6:37 PM

This Brooklyn vs. Manhattan debate is ridiculous. I live in Manhattan - have my whole life. I see shows in both Brooklyn and Manhattan all the time. I see those shows with people who live in both Brooklyn and Manhattan. I eat in both boroughs too. Sometimes, even though I live in Manhattan, I'll go to the bathroom in Brooklyn. It's really quite amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 8:45 PM

I'm going because I hear ATP is a great time. Been wanting to attend an ATP since they were UK only.

Ps I live at the shore and still make it to most "cultural happenings." So, yeah, to me it's never a question of zip code.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2011 10:48 PM

anyone who thinks NMH is better than Portishead is a full-blown retard or a piss-drinking wussy

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2011 12:55 AM

But Main Street's still all cracked and broken.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2011 1:07 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2011 1:50 AM

Its pointless to compare NMH to Portishead. Completely different styles of music. NMH is one of my favorite bands ever because I love the style of music Jeff plays, but Portishead is equally awesome in their own way.

I would see both if I could afford it but I chose Mangum, sorry y'all.....Portishead will probably play NYC in the summer.

I wish Arcade Fire would tour with Lisa Savidge. Lisa Savidge is like Arcade Fire meets Joy Division meets Explosions in the sky. So epic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDSCfwJ3Ft4
