"i can't win... Prince apparently at Darby. i'm in BK at Bk Bowl. maceo parker consolation prize? and i turned down Darby... #EPICFAIL" - chinisha

"Can someone explain why #Prince and Maceo Parker were serenading Leighton Meester onstage at MSG tonight? #SoWrongForSoManyReasons" -Miguel Gonzalez

Prince

Did Prince pull the ultimate con? Maceo (who played with Prince again at Madison Square Garden last night) and Questlove (who was at the Prince show at MSG again last night, tweeting pictures of his co-worker Jimmy Fallon dancing on stage with Prince) were both on the bill of a late-night show at Brooklyn Bowl last night. The Brooklyn Bowl show was set to run later than Prince's MSG show and rumors spread that Prince would play the Brooklyn Bowl show too (the bill even said "very special guests"). Prince is known for playing late-night shows after his main shows. The rumor not only made sense, it worked. Brooklyn Bowl was packed with Prince fans still waiting after 1am for the purple one to appear on stage.

Apparently it even said "Maybe Prince?" on Maceo's setlist. Maybe Maceo didn't even know if he would show up, or maybe he was in on it. Either way, by 1:15am word started to spread that Prince couldn't be playing at Brooklyn Bowl because he had arrived at the (groupie-free?) real afterparty at the Darby on 14th St in Manhattan. Those who ended up seeing Brooklyn Bowl headliner and jam band Lettuce and Dr. John instead of Prince can at least take solace in the fact that Prince didn't actually perform at Darby, though MSG opener Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings did (and of course Questlove was there to see that too).

Told you all the special guest would be Ramesh Srivastava from Voxtrot.

Maceo was great, but man, I was really dissapointed Prince didn't show. I felt like Kevin Arnold when he travelled all that way to see if the Rolling Stones were playing some secret show :(

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 10:49 AM

really an amazing, joyous show. i had high expectations and he really exceeded them. and and i know people prefer 200 capacity spots, but I think msg is the best venue in the city on the special, rare occasions when an artist can own that crowd.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 10:51 AM

It was great also to see Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at MSG last night also. And Prince was in great form.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 10:54 AM

Who did Prince con? He didn't outright say he was going to Brooklynbowl!

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 10:54 AM

GAY Gay Gay
- especially the actress from Gossip Girl (right?)

Also, did you know Prince is playing Dallas at a 'Fundraiser=Concert for the Rich' and General Admission is $1500

FUCK YOU PRINCE...
FUCK YOU WITH JOHN HOLMES' DICK

How many people would have gone to Brooklyn Bowl had there not been a Prince rumor?

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:06 AM

Still beaming from the show which is my second one of this concert series. He rocked out and laid down the love ballads big time. Not for nothing he did saw they were going to the Darby. Sharon Jones Maceo and the Kings were great especially doing Love Bizarre. And those twins yeah BOY

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:06 AM

Prince sucks now. I'd much rather see Kanye live.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:09 AM

What makes ANYBODY think that Prince would be at a venue like Brooklyn Bowl? May as well try to book him at the Knitting Factory then...

I didn't think for a second that he would even consider a venue that wasn't as big as MSG.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:19 AM

I had to google who Leighton Meester is. I guess I am out of touch.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:26 AM

Prince definitely does not suck.

Posted by top mmorpg | January 19, 2011 11:26 AM

So who was the special guest? It must have been someone.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:27 AM

"I didn't think for a second that he would even consider a venue that wasn't as big as MSG."

You obviously know nothing about Prince after shows. I once saw him at T5 (then Club Exit).

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:28 AM

he's also done a full after-party/show at Butter

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:32 AM

there literally was no "special guest". everyone who played was already announced and on the bill. lame.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:35 AM

Prince at Cakeshop in 20mins.

Posted by me | January 19, 2011 11:40 AM

Prince was so good last night that it turned my black eyed peas into garbanzos.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:40 AM

I don't see an issue if Prince was not the special guest. Sometime you have to take chances. But if they announce a special guest, there better be one!

Very tacky on Brooklyn Bowl's part. Shame on them. At least it was for charity.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:40 AM

I saw Prince with Tamar at the Nokia in Times Square paid like $2 a ticket too

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:41 AM

chumps

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:43 AM

What time did Ramesh Srivastava come?

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 11:49 AM

Ah ha ha ha ha. Great job Brooklyn Bowl winding up the rumor mill to a fever pitch in order to sell out a show that would have otherwise sold 50 tix. Mavis Staples was the show to be at last night anyway. Prince just lost points for that Leeton Monster moment.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 12:01 PM

Ha..I went to the concert..it was great! I'm a youngin so I went into the situation expecting it to be all middle aged women disrobing and throwing themselves on stage..but it was that..and much more!

is it possible that price just no-showed? (brooklyn bowl)

anyway, it was for charity. whatever. i got their toward the end, and they were doing a "pay what you want" donation. it was still pretty good (though way overcapacity).

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 1:06 PM

11:40a - awesome

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 1:29 PM

the best were the tweets last night that claimed to see Prince at Brooklyn Bowl. What was that all about? were these people passing on rumors as if they actually saw him there?

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 2:02 PM

2:02, yes. there are a lot of pathetic people out there unfortunately.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 2:14 PM

"You obviously know nothing about Prince after shows. I once saw him at T5 (then Club Exit)."

I guess not. When did the T5 happen then?

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 2:18 PM

So I'll ask BV again...how much did Brooklyn Bowl pay you to hype up a nonexistent Prince show for them yesterday?

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 2:44 PM

BV didn't hype anything. In fact, some of you claimed he was behind the times...

maybe you should actually read that post, which gives you a bunch of reasons NOT to go to Brooklyn Bowl

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2011 3:06 PM

had these idiots fans listen to prince on stage, he announced the darby after party just before the last song.
him not showing at the bowl was a given,
he rather go to the groove or village underground on west 3rd st.
btw BV, where do you find those dumb twitters? these two today are the top...

Posted by me | January 19, 2011 4:47 PM

From Brooklyn Bowl's Twitter:
"Rumors, oh rumors... Could they be true? Maybe so, maybe not... Will it be you know who???"
just a couple of hours before.
They should be ashamed of themselves. Glad I didn't take the chance on it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2011 3:40 AM

Anyone who knows anything about prince shoulda known he wasn't going to the bowl...first, I don't think he knows where Brooklyn is (his sit-in with maceo in prospect park a few years ago notwithstanding), and second it's totally not his style to go sit in at someone else's show, or at least not a bunch of jamband homos like lettuce - prince throws his own aftershows, and they definitely don't involve people bowling while he plays.

Still got fingers crossed that there'll be a real public aftershow after the February gig...and that he'll keep adding another garden gig once a month all year. :)

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2011 3:12 PM

this concert was AMAZING. prince is as hot as ever. looked and sounded INCREDIBLE and the energy was just beyond. i danced ALL night and i showed up in my pajamas with the flu! i heard the brooklyn bowl party was super fun even though prince was not there. but i have one very serious issue and it is with what a complete and total loser leighton meester is. not to mention a terrible actor - i mean she couldn't even FAKE it? she was so uptight so she looked like she was in pain while one of the sexiest men in the world was seranading her. seriously it almost killed the entire mood of the show. prince had to work it doubletime to bring it back after that horrorshow. WHAT. A. LOSER. YOU. ARE. LEIGHTON!!! just completely unforgivable. good luck getting laid after THAT. jeez!

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2011 12:24 PM

um, i'd still give it to leighton meester

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2011 12:46 PM

nice one
