"On Tuesday, Third Man and Nonesuch Records will release "The Party Ain't Over," Ms. Jackson's first studio album in eight years and the first produced by a paragon of contemporary rock: Jack White. The collaboration, with Mr. White playing guitar, is largely retro, a collection of covers recorded live with a 12-piece band. But everyone involved hopes it will introduce Ms. Jackson to a new audience, affording her a level of attention that's closer to her more famous contemporaries like Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash, all of whom she performed with. "She's influential to every modern female singer, whether they know about her or not," Mr. White said. "She broke down those walls in the beginning, when it was the hardest to do."" [NY Times]Wanda Jackson's album, as the big NY Times feature points out, is out today (Tuesday). Thursday night Wanda, Jack, and the "Third Man House Band" played Letterman. One night later was the big (small) show at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Pictures from that show are in this post.
Since then, Jack and Wanda went on to play two shows at the El Rey in LA...
"He led an 11-piece band of youngish talents, including drummer Joey Waronker, bassist Olivia Jean and pedal steel player Rich Gilbert, through rollicking versions of Jackson's old hits and new tunes. The septuagenarian singer held forth center stage, relishing her comeback with a charming mix of feisty come-on and self-confessed senior moments. They will appear on fellow Third Man Records recording artist Conan O'Brien's show tonight.A true raconteur, Jackson amused the crowd with tales of Presley and White, the charismatic, genius sex symbols who book-end her career. "He's a velvet-covered brick," she said of White. "He's going to get his way, but he does it so sweetly." Before playing the classic lament "Busted," she pointed out that she'd seen Elvis play in Vegas, then fluttered a piece of paper: "If the King of Rock can have notes, so can the Queen."" [LA Times]
Wanda, possibly without Jack and the Third Man band, hits the road again in February. Tickets are still on sale for her show at Bowery Ballroom.

Isn't it great how after years of young hipsters and indie rock fans crying out and clamoring for a Wanda Jackson comeback and writing and talking about her endlessly that it finally happened?
I mean goddamn, prior to Jack White coming along, all you'd hear about was Wanda Jackson This, and Wanda Jackson that. So it makes perfect sense that now all of a sudden everyone seems to care about her and it has nothing to do with Jack White convincing everyone they need to care.

Ive seen Wanda before and dig Jack White but boy was she stiff and awful sounding on Letterman. Hopefully the live shows are better.......

I felt weird watching her shake her hips at that Letterman performance. It was embarrassing. The band sounded absolutely fucking amazing (and this is coming from someone who hates Jack White). They really blew me away, but this isnt the kind of music that the older folk can age gracefully to. She's not Mavis Staples singing soul music, she's trying to hold onto some semblance of youth that has long since passed and it just doesnt look right.
And yeah, I think it's pathetic that people will follow White anywhere. None of you jokers cared for Wanda before, dont act like you do now.

The Music Hall of Williamsburg show was great, and people who "follow[ed]" White there got to see him do what he does best, and that's play guitar. Also, I thought Jackson stepped up her performance from the Letterman taping.

Music Hall show was much much better than the Letterman performance. Maybe she was just nervous to be on TV, but she seemed super comfortable in the smaller room.
And how is it pathetic to follow one of your favorite artists into a collaboration with another artist he respects?

Wanda arrived to the Letterman taping late. She landed in NYC from Ok City and went straight to the Sullivan theatre. Her Mother's funeral was the day before...so taking that into consideration I think the ol' gal did just fine.
Check Conan tonight for a much more relaxed, solid performance.

I love the chemistry between Jack & Wanda! I saw the show at the Opry and Third Man. I hope I'm as cute and vibrant as Wanda when I'm in my seventies. Also, being born and raised in the Nashville, I listened to many great artists growing up. My folks had Wanda records and maybe 8 tracks. Jack, I'm glad you choose to call TN your home as well.
