Planned Parenthood Rally - Foley Square

The 'Stand Up For Women's Health' rally went down in Foley Square this afternoon (2/26), from 1-3pm. According to a post-event press release,

On Saturday, February 26, thousands of people came together in Foley Square, in downtown Manhattan, to stand up for women's health, and fight back against the recent Congressional attacks against Planned Parenthood and family planning funding.

The rally comes on the heels of passage of dangerous anti-choice legislation in the House of Representatives, which, if made into law,
would eliminate basic health care and education services for millions of Americans - and according to Department of Health estimates, 800,000 New Yorkers.

Nellie McKay and John Darnielle played two songs each at the event. Lots of politicians spoke. More pictures, videos and the full speaker/performer list by minute (the setlist), below....

"I love how the right wing fear mongers imply that government funds go towards abortion when in reality most of it goes to education, HIV and AIDS stuff, and many other NON ABORTION things"

Doesn't "most of it" mean that SOME of it IS going to abortions? That would make them right for implying it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2011 11:47 PM

Actually, 11:47, by law, planned parenthood cannot use any money received from the government for abortions.

Defunding Planned Parenthood IS the equivalent of banning abortion in many places. In many parts of this country, planned parenthood is the only place you can get an abortion. Most abortion doctors have been scared away from many places by right wing loonies who threaten to, and sometimes do, murder them.

Posted by Anonymous | February 27, 2011 12:06 AM

planned parenthood gives you birth control, checks your boobs and v for health and stds when you dont have health insurance, or if you're young and dont want your mom to find out you're sexually active and responsible getting bcpills - PLANNED PARENTHOOD IS OUR FRIEND

Posted by Anonymous | February 27, 2011 12:10 AM

^ It was a comment on the logic not the actual issue.

Good. Abortion is irrelevant to the issue of government funding of Planned Parenthood.

Posted by Anonymous | February 27, 2011 12:19 AM

@12:10 Pay for your own birth control, pay to check your boobs and pay to check yourself for STD's. I can't afford it right now.

Your health is your problem. If it's mine too, I'm gonna insist you follow some of my rules. You will have less choice.

P.S. Abortions are and should be legal.

i'm not a republican nor a believer in religion just sayin here> women do have control over their bodies w/o government interference or resorting to abortion. Diaphragms, the pill, condoms, iud, birth control pills, etc. give many choices and options. abortion should not become another birth control tool. it just should'nt have to go that far. we wouldn't do that to other mammals, or even animals, or the outcry would be hostile from similar camps. am i wrong? don't hate, just explain why i could be wrong...thank you...

Many of these people are confused. Now one is taking away their right to an abortion. The legislation proposed basically says "you get knocked up, you pay for the abortion". People should not expect taxpayers to pay for their mistakes. Learn some responsibility and for chrissakes, use a fucking condom already.

"I'll never understand the people who fight so hard for the right to kill babies. People are sick."

I'll never understand the people who fight so hard to force someone to raise a child if they don't want to. I also don't understand why someone would fight so hard to stop scientists for researching embryos that are going to be destroyed anyway. We're just different. I don't believe a fertilized embryo is the same as a "baby" whereas you do... because you are uneducated. Get it?

Posted by Anonymous | February 27, 2011 1:06 PM

@1:06
You don't have to be bothered by raising a child if you don't want to. Ever heard of adoption? There are a ton of people who would do anything to have a child. Have a heart...

for all the people saying this is not a 'ban on abortion' .. what you dont realize is that in many states planned parenthood is the only place that girls can get abortions.

i cant believe how fucking stupid our voting populace is. repubs run the country into the ground for 8 years and two years later we put them back into power.

Posted by Anonymous | February 27, 2011 2:43 PM

Americans have very short attention spans. Also, they are misinformed, scared little babies. Republicans prey on this mentality. The rest of the world can't believe how stupid we are.

Posted by Anonymous | February 27, 2011 3:10 PM

@5:34 am:

Because no method of birth control is 100% effective. Especially when they are not used correctly. And given the swing towards "abstinence-only" sex-ed, kids are not taught how to use them properly.

Because sometimes, women get raped. Should they be forced to have their attacker's child?

Because all the methods you list cost money and most require a doctor's visit.

Because if a woman has a child she doesn't have the money to care for, the government will end up paying anyway (social services, etc.)

The list goes on and on....

Posted by 4Choice | February 27, 2011 3:12 PM

i love BV for making this post.
and anyone who's made a comment on this about "responsibility, condoms, not using abortion as birth control, etc" should try to understand for a second that planned parenthood encourages that attitude as well-- it allows women who have no other means of obtaining birth control (because they can't afford primary care physicians) to get it at a low cost. planned parenthood gives out condoms for FREE all the fucking time all over the fucking place. they are one of the only places where people under 17 can get emergency contraception (often for free, sometimes at a much discounted price than the $50-70 you can pay at duane reade.) they allow women of all ages and economic status a chance to BE responsible. you take away those options, i promise you there will be many, many more abortions, and not all of them under the supervision of a doctor.

Posted by fuckyeahbirthcontrol | February 27, 2011 3:58 PM

@5:34 AM - you are wrong, because saying that abortion is just another "birth control tool" completely underestimates the situation most women are in, when they decide they want to have an abortion. Most people don't say "I don't care if I get pregnant, because I can just go down and get an abortion, right after I take my car in for an oil change".

It isn't an easy decision for most people, and it is something they usually deal with the ramifications of for a long time afterwards. But bringing an unwanted child into the world is a far worse thing. And it is a woman's right to choose. Being pro-choice isn't being pro-abortion. It is that the woman should be allowed to have the choice to have one, if she thinks it is the right decision for her future.

The money Planned PArenthood gets from the Government is not used for abortions. It is used for family planning, cancer screenings, pap smears and many things that are important for woman's health in this country.

F off, left wing losers

I'm always amazed at how many right wingers comment on this blog. Perhaps it is a result of rich kids moving to NYC and keeping their parents political views.

FUCK ALL YOU PUSSIES!

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 4:38 PM

"Many of these people are confused. Now one is taking away their right to an abortion. The legislation proposed basically says "you get knocked up, you pay for the abortion". People should not expect taxpayers to pay for their mistakes. Learn some responsibility and for chrissakes, use a fucking condom already."

Actually, I think you are confusing the PP legislation with HR3. HR3 upholds the Hyde Amendment (which is already upheld--redundant) and additionally makes it impossible for insurance companies to cover abortions. In 2006, gov't monies only went to paying for 191 abortions. The government doesn't pay for abortion anyway. (source: http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/2008/01/28/or38.pdf)

The Planned Parenthood legislation completely defunds Planned Parenthood and bars them from receiving government money. While PP does provide abortions, it is a small percent of what they do. They provide birth control and condoms, exactly what you are suggesting people use instead of getting abortions, so really, using your logic, you should be against this legislation.

@1:57 you're definitely confused too. Look at the signs and look at what you wrote.

Yeah. That must be it. Old sucks. The new thing is to be ironic (like on TV), rude, child-like (especially when discussing politics) and left-wing. Awesome.

^ Not to mention how "hip" it is to be a sarcastic uninformed douche.

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 7:11 PM

@ 9:57 and 7:11, I wish they would bring back the draft. That would kick these apathetic hipsters into gear. The reason why there are so many sarcastic uniformed posters on this blog is that they are mostly privileged young white males and they think this political stuff doesn't affect them. To be fair, I went to that rally and I saw many hipster boys supporting reproductive rights.

To the rest of you indie poseurs: When you're afraid to use Daddy's insurance because you contracted herpes from yet another drunken hookup at Legion/Union Pool/Woods/Tandem. Planned Parenthood will be there to treat you.

Then again, if PP loses it's federal funding to treat STDs, maybe not.

IT all boils down to ....... people fighting for the right to be promiscuous WITHOUT ANY consequences.

@ 7:11 What in that comment says "uninformed douche?" Or are you just being a douche? Maybe we can meet in the school yard at 3:00 and figure it out?

Half the babies aborted in NYC are black yet they make up only a quarter of the population. Kathleen Turner doesn't care about black people.

I was there, what a great day! Being in crowds like this gives me some hope. I'm pretty sure most of these commenters' friends or loved ones have visited Planned Parenthood at some point in their lives.

Posted by Anonymous | March 5, 2011 1:56 PM

Good riddance. Maybe know they'll turn it into something that's not a complete waste of space.

If it's your body then use your money. DEFUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD.

Does PP cover the cost for years of grief counseling for the woman who awakens one day to the fact that she had a child whose life she voluntary cut short?

Women DO regret abortions years after they make that fateful CHOICE.

Statistics show that women who go to PP are many more times likely to get referred to have an abortion than they are to be referred to put the baby up for adoption.

And what about the PP facilities which welcomed the "pimps" and their underage "sex workers"/aka 13 and 14 year old girls and said they could come in and have everything taken care of--no questions asked? Isn't that illegal sex trafficking? Should we be supporting that with our tax money?

Abortion is big business. Famous people support big business. Of course they do. They don't care nothing about you, or your unborn child. They care about money and themselves. Wake up people.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2011 2:03 PM

B - In case you didn't read any of the above posts, none of the federal tax payer money goes to abortions. And im not sure what fox news message board you got that pimps and 13-year old hos shit from, but you need to have your parents sign off on it if you're under 18. Do you people actually do like, any research?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2011 2:29 PM

pp actually fired the workers caught on tape in twelve different cities

why would they fire them if they did nothing wrong

you won't hear about it on the news

exposeplannedparenthood.com

sad culture of death we live in

Posted by B | March 19, 2011 2:53 PM

@ 2:29 -- yeah and none of your social security money goes to putting bullets into guns in Afghanistan. Here's your sign. You can have a seat over there with the other retards.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2011 3:40 PM

So..all name-calling aside..did you "actually do like, any research" on the above information regarding pp's aiding and abetting sex trafficking?

maybe you could actually learn something here and act with purpose instead of spewing forth hateful criticism

have you considered that maybe someone's little girl out there may have been forced into becoming a prostitute and taken to pp by her pimp so that he could get her "taken care of" and back out on the streets to make him some more money

the so-called health care worker at pp was caught on tape admitting that they would NOT have to get parental signature..that's why they fired the worker

this is real and very eye-opening...it needs to be addressed

stop wasting time calling names and look into and do something about it

Posted by B | March 19, 2011 11:03 PM

@11:03 - you misrepresent statistics, as liberals are so want to do. You ought to take some of your own medicine, sonny, and examine from reputable objective 3rd party sources (i.e. Huffington Post doesn't, like, count) what percentage of abortions are done on victims of rape and incest. You child, that argument has been debunked so long ago. No, I think that you need to get your facts straight, sonny.

Posted by Anonymous | March 21, 2011 3:07 PM

I remember a time when it was possible to tell the difference between some asshole meathead and a "hipster." In 2011, someone who lives in NYC and pretends to be cool and takes full advantage of all the strange and wonderful things this city has to offer is often just as much of a hateful, boring person as the people New Yorkers used to flee from. That's a sad thing.

I don't understand the "Look at this Fucking Fetus" sign. That's helping the cause, how, exactly?
