Best Coast

"The '90s are back, and along with flannel, environmentalism and 20-something ennui, the resurgence has brought some great self-deprecating rock songs.

Best Coast and Wavves are responsible for the best of them. The two young bands performed at the 9:30 Club on Monday night, singing about California boredom and slacker romance - the latter made all the more intriguing by the fact that Best Coast singer Bethany Cosentino and Wavves singer Nathan Williams are a couple.

And while the neo-grunge lovebirds have both toured doggedly (and separately) in support of their both-excellent 2010 albums, Monday's gig proved that neither act has quite figured out how to translate the heroic loserdom of their recordings to the stage.

Still, these losers have been wildly successful." [Washington Post]

You won't be able to see the stage, but the entire DC show is streaming at NPR. It took place the same night Best Coast's Letterman's appearance aired.

Two nights after DC, last night (2/2), Best Coast, Wavves, and tour-opener No Joy played a sold out show at Webster Hall, and they do it again tonight at Music Hall of Williamsburg. More pictures from Webster Hall are below...

"No Joy" is a pretty good band name!

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:33 AM

Now this is what I'm talking about!

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:34 AM

I love BC's singles and I think the album is excellent. But after now seeing them live for the fourth time, I can safely say Best Coast have a long fuckin' way to go before I see them again live. They need a bass player and a better drummer for sure if they continue playing venues larger than Mercury Lounge.

Posted by soysalami | February 3, 2011 11:37 AM

You guys call this music? Go listen to Mumford and Sons and get back to me. Looking at this san fards hack version of Brittney Murphy makes me see how far down the rabbit hole hipster dribble has traveled.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:38 AM

I just don't understand why people like this. They can't sing, they have no emotion, lyrics are lame, melodies are crap, they can't play guitar, there's no composition at all. There is literally not one redeeming quality about either of these bands.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:50 AM

I wonder what Jay Reatard would think knowing that his old backing band is playing with this hack of a douche bag..

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:52 AM

well it's only jay's bass player now... and something tells me he wouldn't care.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:53 AM

If I hear about the band Mumford and Sons one more time....

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:54 AM

what was wrong with BC's sound last night? No guitars in the mix at all, really terrible. Can't believe no one fixed the sound.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:54 AM

too many females present on stage for this to be a good show.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:55 AM

why did she sound like an alien? Why so many effects on her voice? Can't sang no more?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:56 AM

best toast!

gayyes!

yes division!

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:56 AM

Best Coast has crappy melodies? Clean the wax out of your ears, 11:50.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:57 AM

No Joy were great, surprised that band doesn't get more love.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 12:02 PM

mumford and sons!!!! haahhhaaha

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 12:03 PM

mehford and sons is more like it. His girlfriend Laura has fifty times more talent than him.

Posted by soysalami | February 3, 2011 12:09 PM

Only 15 comments? Come on, you guys got a lotta catching up to do if you wanna top the White Stripes thread!

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 12:13 PM

Mumford and Marling could destroy Bethany and Nathan any day of the week.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 12:13 PM

what does she see in that guy?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 12:19 PM

anybody catch that awkward best coast handshake moment on letterman?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 12:20 PM

thought it was 2011 already. this shit is played

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 12:23 PM

@11:57 Yes, any band of 15 year olds in California can write the same thing. She has no range and no real vocal ability so she can only write plain melodies. But glad you agree on the other 5 reasons they suck haha.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 1:13 PM

@12:49 So? Are we jealous of their success? Of course. Are we jealous of any other aspect of them? Not at all.

But in any case, this stuff is awful from people that have nothing to sing about besides "I want to get high in my parents' pool house."

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 2:40 PM

Mumford and Sons is the hummus-smeared truth, y'all better recognize

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 2:47 PM

I'm gonna get a jump on the nu-metal revival.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 2:47 PM

"ugly people making ugly music for ugly people. the circle of life" WTF get a life you shallow loser, that's the most intelligent response that you have, wow how friggin old are you anyway. oh and for...

"too many females present on stage for this to be a good show." so you just like to watch boys on stage? who the fuck are you, do you go out ever, this is some of the most misogynist crap I've read on a thread, christ grow the fuck up already, if you have a criticism use your damaged brain, oh wait that's futile. I don't even care about the band but this thread reminds me as to why I stopped reading this wasted space

Posted by Mel | February 3, 2011 2:55 PM

Jay Reatard would do all of their drugs and then pee on them.

RIP Jay, miss u.

3:33 has a tiny wee wee

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 3:39 PM

I am willing to waiger that I make more money than Nathan Williams. And why on the good name of God are people still listening to Wavves. And there is no fucking way that that show sold out yesterday.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 3:42 PM

I didn't realize Punxsutawney Phil played Webster Hall last night.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 3:50 PM

So does Bethany stink as bad as she looks?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 4:00 PM

Mumford and Sons, hummus, meh, variations on the theme of "meh", etc.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 4:07 PM

i don't know, but someone had the stinkiest f**king breath up front on the left close to the stage. smelled like a soiled sock. breath through your nose you neanderthal. i moved around three times and everywhere i went i could smell your fowl stench. finally i went to the back, and eventually, left.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 4:08 PM

U call this shit music?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 4:10 PM

Seriously - listen to wavves' king of the beach and blink 182's dude ranch - it's the SAME ALBUM.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 4:47 PM

@4:08 Mistake number 1 was going to the show in the first place.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 5:22 PM

times for tonight's show:

no joy 9
best coast 10
wavves 11:15

interesting to see theyre switching headliners each night

4:47 yeah dude i love that album/those albums

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 5:57 PM

"But in any case, this stuff is awful from people that have nothing to sing about besides "I want to get high in my parents' pool house."

Amen.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 6:13 PM

The dude from Wavves is a dick, and these bands suck. They'll be gone in a month anyway.

Posted by TheSloot | February 3, 2011 6:41 PM

U call this shit-music?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 6:57 PM

I liked Wavves (they were tight), I didn't really like Best Coast (they need to thicken up their sound). No Joy were cool/loud.

Mumford and Sons are not a band, they're a piece of costumed musical theater with lyrics that are fragmented, contrived, vague, and trite. So what? The guy can wear a vest and shirt, strum his guitar really hard, and dance like a fool while stomping on a hi-hat stand and kick drum. That doesn't mean his music is interesting.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 7:43 PM

I saw Wavves at the Knitting Factory last June w/ Dom and Cloud Nothings. Now that was a fun show.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 7:59 PM

tottal fuckking garbbage.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 9:31 PM

The last band I regret admitting I listened to was Winger. But I was seven years old at the time. What is going to be all these Wavves fans excuses in 20+ years. I mean, you are all supposed to be adults. Right?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 9:35 PM

Excuses to whom? Shitbag hipsters who hate everything ever?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 9:50 PM

If you don't like these bands then don't read articles about them.

Posted by lola | February 3, 2011 10:38 PM

CHUBBY FEST

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 10:42 PM

Excuses to themselves. This is seriously lame shit. Fuck this marketing campaign.

I laugh at all wavves/best coast people laughing at Mumford and sons people. You are he same people. One just reads blogs, and the other just listens to FM radio.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 10:44 PM

No one is claiming Best Coast or Wavves to be musical geniuses, but they know how to sell themselves really well. They write catchy lyrics that are relateable to every underdog and I mean everyone in the end loves the underdog. They're smart and thats where their talent is.

Posted by cookie | February 3, 2011 10:51 PM

Being smart at marketing is not being smart at music, and I see no reason why anyone who cares about music as a legitimate art form would give a fuck about these trust fund posers who wouldn't have a single fan were it not for the PR machines of their respective "indie" labels.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:27 PM

best coast fans are completely repulsive disgusting people - I have never come across people as vile as I have tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2011 11:35 PM

Who?

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 12:02 AM

King of the Beach was a fun record. Does that mean I "fell for the marketing campaign" and will soon be "making excuses to myself?"

Go fist.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 12:09 AM

No Joy was the best surprise of the nite for sure. Total Sonic Youth meets My Bloody Valentine shoegaze. Wavves and Best Coast are fun and sounded pretty alright last nite. Best Coast covered Loretta Lynn and that was one of the best songs of the nite. If she's in it for the long haul, Bethany will add some country to her musical palette for the next record. Otherwise these bands are potential 1 album wonders.

Posted by craig | February 4, 2011 12:34 AM

hey 4:47 - listen to every record recorded for the last 20 years - it's the same fucking album!

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 1:15 AM

the reason why i like wavves so much is because he likes pot so much. anyone who likes pot that much is A-OK in my book.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 1:19 AM

videos of best coast and wavves from tonight's show. couple of new songs in there from both bands.

http://www.youtube.com/maestro416

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 1:56 AM

No Joy was easily the best band of the night. Very impressed with them, picked up their LP. Somebody else already said it but for me Best Coast is a band that really needs to add to their live show. First being a new drummer. Second, some backup vocals. Third a bass player. They're really pretty underwhelming live. Wavves I was never into and they didn't do anything to change my mind tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 2:01 AM

Pretty mediocre show tonight, I left after Best Coast, not a Wavves fan, so I'm glad they switched up the headliners. Best Coast were sick, so the sluggishness and the less than average vocals were understandable, but I don't think I'll be lining up next time they come around, unless they release another great album. Bethany sounded good on about half the songs, and the other half you could tell she was sick.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 2:24 AM

Cookie, the problem is that's what the whole indie scene rails against top 40/mainstream music for. people with little to no talent writing mediocre songs with extremely broad/generic relatable lyrics being put through a hype machine. This is literally the EXACT same thing, just with smellier fans.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 3:26 AM

best coast fans are completely new to the music scene- and are immoral, nasty people. after last night I will try to avoid them.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 6:13 AM

Best Coast sounded GREAT last night!

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 8:47 AM

"Otherwise these bands are potential 1 album wonders.

Posted by craig"

Well dummy child who just got on the bandwagon, King of the Beach is not Wavves first album. This idiot sums up the reason why these 2 shows sold out. Loser kids believing some spoon fed latest hype thinking they are all cool.

Smartly i bought three tickets for Music Hall when they went on sale. Sold 2 of them for a ton on Clist(to some of the aforementioned morons above) and used the third to go.

The show SUCKED. Oversold and ridiculously crowded with the most laughable stereotypes imaginable. The sound was awful actually and I usually love the sound there. The person above saying Best Coast sounded great is either a plant or deaf.

As others have said No Joy was the best part of the evening. I thought Best Coast might have gotten better since i first saw them at the seaport but nah they are still a weak band. I have seen Wavves a number of times since he first played here and now i realize the joke was on me and is now over. Just seemed like tired schtick at this point.

But hey as long as the fools are buying, i will keep making money off of it.

@11:27 people still say "poser?" lolllll takkin urself 2 srsly lol

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 9:51 AM

Whoever was mixing the sound for Best Coast last night managed to make MusicHall sound like Webster on a bad night, not to shift blame from the band who were really rather crap to begin with...

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 9:53 AM

"dude you mad CORNY

Posted by hate hate hate"

Well good to see at least that the low iq unfunny fans of these bands get up early these days.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 10:03 AM

it was a chapelle's show reference. if you had any knowledge of comedy you'd know that.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 10:11 AM

I think "poser" is apropos when speaking about this type of music.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 10:12 AM

mumford and sons is the new hummus

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 11:34 AM

"it was a chapelle's show reference. if you had any knowledge of comedy you'd know that."

Just because Chappelle said it and it was funny does not mean you saying it is.
Fucking moron(and for the record I knew where the reference came from)

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 11:54 AM

chappelle didn't say it...

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 12:12 PM

Nothing will ever be "the new hummus"
The phyto-nutrient power of the chickpea will keep it forever champion.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 1:32 PM

In a not-quite-THAT-related story to Chapelle, it was Rick James birthday the other day (Tuesday). Rock on Ghost of Rick James!

Posted by ugh | February 6, 2011 6:19 PM

"I just don't understand why people like this. They can't sing..."

Bethany Cosentino has an excellent voice. She can really sing...unlike half of your indie dorm-room moron girls these days.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2011 9:33 PM

"...melodies are crap..."

Considering that Best Coast employs classic girl-group melodies, your comment carries zero weight.

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2011 9:34 PM

"...melodies are trite..."

fix'd

Posted by Anonymous | February 10, 2011 9:38 PM

Seriously though, in five years you will be embarrassed you ever bought this shit. Everclear is better, and somehow smarter.

Who cares how good bands are at selling themselves? That makes me hate them even more if they suck (Best Coast).

I've tried listening to the Best Coast album, I can't, it's so bad it hurts (not so good).
