Elvis Costello in front of the Wheel of Elvis in 1986 (via)
Wheel of Elvis

Elvis Costello & The Imposters are back, and Costello will head out for two weeks of dates with The Spectacular Spinning Songbook:

For the first time in 25 years, Costello will let his set-list be chosen by "The Spectacular Spinning Songbook", a monumental game-show wheel that features 40 song-titles, including hits, rarities and very unexpected covers.

Audience members will be invited onstage where they may spin "The Wheel" and then be offered a chance to enter the "Hostage to Fortune Go-Go Cage", while their selection is performed.

Alternatively, they may choose to take a seat in the on-stage "Society Lounge", where light refreshments will be served, during what promises to be a splendid and surprising evening.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters will play dates throughout May, kicking things off on 5/7 in Reno and ending with two shows at NYC's Beacon Theatre on 5/22 & 5/23. A presale (login of elvis and password of costello) is setup for all dates on the tour. NYC isn't listed there yet, but Chicago just went on sale. Update: The presale for all dates, including 5/18 at Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ, starts Tuesday at 10am. General sale begins Friday

Elvis, bubala, you don't need to showboat with a giant wheel. Take a note from your contemporaries and just rock the Beacon and play a decent/kick ass setlist.

I heard he'll be doing a cover of only Mumford & Sons songs on some dates of the tour. Can anyone confirm?

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 1:29 PM

what if the wheel only picks his crappiest songs. will we get a refund?

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 1:32 PM

There'll probably still be an obligatory hits encore or something. I'm sure the hate comments will commence, but I really like Elvis costello. Blood & chocolate is a real hidden gem.

WTF is with the incredibly not-funny Mumford and sons comments? Jesus, like hummus-virgin wasn't bad enough. Can't you filter these out, bv?

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 1:56 PM

I heard he'll be doing a shout out to all the BV cunts in the middle of his sets with a rare cover of Barry Manilow's "If That Ain't Shit On Your Ass". Rock on Elvis!

People are going to bash elvis costello on here? What the fuck? Do you people even like music?

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 2:12 PM

No fears BLG, when he did this on the blood and chocolate (?) tour it worked really well. Not show boating, lots of surprises, it all worked out etc.

Sadly however, I will miss this because the only rational response to reading that's it's been 25 years since that tour is to slit my wrists.

anon 1:32 - not possible. elvis costello has NO crappy songs.

at least he's not doing the now-tired formula of playing a specific albunm in it's entirety (although there's a few i'd KILL to hear in that format)

rock on, king elvis. rock on.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 2:24 PM

Will he be wearing a too-small suit and sweating profusely at these shows?

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 2:28 PM

honestly, i'm already prepared to punch the person posting these stupid comments about mumford and sons....it's obvious that their PR team are heavy abusers of BV threads.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 2:33 PM

@2:13 I bet it could work. Yeah, I misread the post and did not realize its a "revival" of the wheel. Hell, there are definitely 40 great songs he could play and some amazing covers. Been wanting to see Elvis for awhile, and here is hoping tickets are not ridiculous. But now I can't stop thinking of Dylan doing this. Damn you Elvis!

Posted by BLG | February 4, 2011 2:37 PM

...oof...$93 bucks for Chicago and $106 for Rochester...hope Beacon is not much higher than that!

Posted by BLG | February 4, 2011 2:41 PM

What if he lands on the same song twice?

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 2:49 PM

Free hummus with proof of purchase. brbpizza.com. Could be fun if Elvis keeps it rockin'/punky..

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 2:50 PM

He's playing Wellmont Theatre 5/18 in Montclair also.

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 4:40 PM

elvis cashgrab.

Posted by donn | February 4, 2011 4:42 PM

What about the Attractions? What are THEY up to?

Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2011 4:50 PM

the imposters actually are pretty much the attractions, just a different bass player.

i saw them in central park maybe 6 years ago and they were great.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 11:31 AM

Are all of these shows seated?

Posted by Anonymous | February 8, 2011 1:55 PM

Apparently NYC shows not on sale yet. But $126 for the Wellmont? Forget it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 8, 2011 1:58 PM

Beacon shows on sale now in presale above.

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2011 1:06 AM

I have fantasized about the '86 Spinning Wheel tour since it happened, and can't believe I finally get to see it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2011 12:58 PM

Is the Wellmont show already sold out?

Posted by Anonymous | February 11, 2011 3:10 PM

I have tix to WHBPAC in July. The Cheapest are $150 and most expensive $275, but it's a very small venue, so worth it. Can't wait!!!!
