Janelle Monae @ Terminal 5 (more by Matthew Eisman)
Janelle Monae

As performing with Prince and a Grammy performance have recently shown, Janelle Monae is definitely moving upward. It wouldn't be surprising if Of Montreal, who she has opened for on tour in the past, eventually open for her. That won't be happening any time in the near future though, as Janelle will head out on tour with Bruno Mars in May, who she recently performed with at the Grammys.

The tour, which they're calling the 'Hooligans in Wondaland' tour, kicks off at NYC's Roseland Ballroom on May 4 with opener Plan B (who like Arcade Fire, recently took home a Brit, and not long ago played a sold out show at Bowery Ballroom). Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10am.

um, the guy with the big red gibson or gretsch ... is he even playing that thing? at one point towards the end it's just sort of hanging there and then all of a sudden he's kinda strumming and kinda not. odd.

What is it exactly about Bruno Mars that just makes you want to punch him in his face and then steal his lunch money?

1:18 - It's called "playing to backing tapes." (It's possible that the guy was actually playing and either it was so heavily processed or so low in the mix as to be indistinguishable, but he was probably just there for show.)

I am so sick of these new neo-soul/r&b/rap/punk/rock-pop/glam-electro artists popping up out of nowhere and being celebrated like they are new and exciting. FUCK THAT...they are hustlers capitalizing on a modern-vintage look and an exciting name like "Bruno Mars" and "Janelle Monae". They are hustling music with the SAME MESSAGE that's been around for the history of popular music..love, affection, power, and the art of being CORRECT. They are NOTHING SPECIAL. And hello, anyone else think that Bruno Mars stole part of his persona from the success of Kid CuDi's "Man on the Moon"? Outer space motif, anyone?

^ So does that mean you think they lack originality?

What artists do you think are avoiding that description?

Janelle Monae rocks! See her in person if you can.

"Janelle Monae rocks! See her in person if you can."

Haha, I wish! If you know what I mean :)

Um, 'frustrated with haters'...I'm pretty sure 99% of all music is about those same 4 things. What, people can't write love songs anymore because it's been done? Retard.

"um, the guy with the big red gibson or gretsch ... is he even playing that thing? at one point towards the end it's just sort of hanging there and then all of a sudden he's kinda strumming and kinda not. odd."

Watch the film carefully. His strap breaks about a third of the way through. He recovers well, holding it up part of the time, sitting down part of the time. It hangs there for most of the rest of the number though.

Quit hating!

I love Janelle Monae! I saw her open up for Raphael Saadiq (who has a new album btw! http://itunes.apple.com/us/collection/free-song-pre-order-new-album/id1?fcId=421228971) like 3 years ago and she was amazing. I knew she'd be huge!!
