Lauryn Hill

After a run of shows that started in Vermont and included NYC-area gigs at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Bowery Ballroom, Blue Note (times 3), Highline Ballroom (after being postponed due to weather), and even House of Blues in Atlantic City, Lauryn Hill (eventually) played Wellmont Theater in her home state of NJ last night (2/4). More pictures from the Wellmont show, and a few more tour dates that were added since the last time we posted her tour dates (including Coachella - hopefully someone gets her on stage on time there!), below...

U ARE NO AXL ROSE

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 1:08 PM

1) What time did she start?
2) Why are people paying ridiculous prices to go see her after not releasing anything new for the past how many years?

p.s. Sadly...she probably only played for 75 minutes or so

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 1:10 PM

LOL at all the people still going to see her. You're all fucking idiots, and the reason she still shows up late and puts on a half-assed show.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 1:12 PM

yeah. and her songs she performs is completely unrecognizable. i remember reading that she contractually obligated to not perform her songs in its original sounds or some dumb shit like that.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 1:26 PM

There is nothing half-assed about her shows. She really gives it her all, maybe more so tonight as it was her homecoming. She went on at midnight (her set time was announced as "unconfirmed", so this "late" business is unwarranted) and she played until around 2:15. Lacking new material, her old material is classic and so is her voice, which is, surprisingly, still pretty remarkable.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 1:28 PM

I'm hoping she gets booed off the stage at Coachella.....

anyone wanna bet she won't be on time?

"At least the DJ is legit" - Mark Anthony"

What? The DJ was awful! Worst wait ever.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 1:41 PM

Can't believe people put up with this diva shit. I wouldn't stand for this from any performer, even if it was someone I truly love like Mumford and Sons.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 1:54 PM

Sade is the only person I would wait to see for hours. I wish Hill would put out another album. Really

I was there last night. It's true that there was no set starting time so the late accusations are unwarranted. However, if they knew she wouldn't be going until 11pm or midnight they shouldn't have allowed the doors to open until 10 pm. The vocal performances weren't perfect but her voice is still remarkable. It's hard not to be blown away by her voice, stage prescence, and intelligence. The lower back pain from stading for five hours waiting prevented me from fully enjoying the concert. The five hour wait really killed my impression of the show. She kept shouting directions to the band throughout the night. She kept telling some men off stage to turn up her in ears. The DJs playing hip hop before hand were unpleasant. I came to see Lauryn Hill not some deeply unattractive men play hip hop from their laptops. The back up singers were underwhelming. They didn't compliment her well at all. She should really consider hiring three new ones. Their harmony wasn't impressive. I'm sure there are three soul singers with better sounding harmony than those three. Overall it was a great show. The biggest missteps were allowing the doors to open five hours before she came on onstage, allowing those men to "warm up" the crowd, and not doing the original versions of the songs. The best performances of the night were ready or not, doo wop (that thing), and ex factor.

how do you have a show with no set starting time. when are people supposed to show up? she could have gone on 2 days later.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2011 3:41 PM

I really don't get these ppl who are talking about her sets and haven't been to her concerts. You're haters seriously. If she didn't keep you waiting what are you worried about. And YES I have been to one of her shows and it was awesome and she was only 45 minutes late and I loved it! Door time is NOT what time she goes on. She puts on a great show I'm watching vids from last night and I have to see her Turn Your Lights Down Low was awesome! She is so worth the wait and the money! But hey no one's begging you to go.

Oh and whoever you are who said "you're no Axl Rose" please honey don't compare them. I've never even heard one of their songs, two different genres and Axl Rose is late because they party and get drunk etc. You don't know why she's *late* which she isn't bc she doesn't have a start time. The venues open their doors so early in hopes of selling drinks (hence the reason they're $4)

Posted by Cherri | February 5, 2011 3:53 PM

I don't think that any person in the world-even if he is super famous- should behave in such disrespect to people who gathered to pay respect for his work. this is just a shame that people feel that they have the right to treat their audience that way. why did she schedule a show in front of people if she clearly don't value them or their time anyway??

in another note- great pictures! very well done. great colors and composition.

Posted by hag | February 5, 2011 5:10 PM

She should really get her act together! I'm going to dispute my creditcard charges since I bought ticket for Feb 4th and she failed to show up before midnight! So legally she was a NO SHOW!

And on top of that, if you have people wait hours, you better give a perfect show! Which it was not! I left the concert after two songs.

The sound was horrible, you can't really hear her well because the bass and the drum was too loud. The background singer are set up way too sharp, and the overall sound was just too loud and gives you buzz in the ear and headache.

Not a hater at all, I am a fan of hers and would still buy her CD (if she ever manage to release one!), but would never see want to see her live again. Very disappointing, this is not the way to keep your fans!

I just want to ask how many people who continuously trash her in comments in these news articles have actually been to one of her recent live shows. I'd also like to know how many of you are actually interested in Lauryn Hill THE ARTIST vs. Lauryn Hill "the memory from '98." Lauryn Hill is DEFINITELY troubled - her behavior over the past 10 years has absolutely reflected that (if any of you true fans out there have been paying attention). Obviously, that is no excuse for the lateness. Honestly, there is no excuse for the lateness. But that has nothing to do with the virtuosity of her performance.

Could ya'll get over yourselves for a second and THINK about what she's doing here - just like she did in '98 when she came out with The Mised, she is FUSING many genres of music - alt. rock, funk, reggae, soul, gospel, hip hop - but MUSIC has changed and SHE has changed. She is performing LAURYN - if you guys actually want new music from her, and you want to hear what she has to say, you need to get your heads out of your asses and recognize that she is doing something here that no other artist out right now is doing. People are too busy whining that they can't "sing along" - maybe it's not about YOU - maybe you should remember that you are paying to see LAURYN.

If you've been to one of these shows, you'll note that she is THRILLED to be performing. She dances around the stage like crazy. She COMMANDS her band and crew. She smiles. She jokes with the audiences. And then, she gives back the love we've been showing and says "I have a new album coming out soon." This is really exciting - if we want her to come out with something new (as we have been demanding these past 8 years), we need to stop tearing her apart. Perez Hilton, have YOU been to one of these shows? If not, maybe stop trashing her all of the time on your blog.

Yes, she needs to show her fans respect. But, us, the fans need to show her love.

Posted by How many of yall have ACTUALLY been to one of these shows? | February 5, 2011 5:19 PM

Hill & co don't just disrepect crowds, they disrepect other musician's. I saw the fugees go on stage late at a KROQ festival in CA years ago. They kicked them off the stage after 5 mins & went to the next band. That's what they should do at the Hill shows, too.

I'm sure Coachella will be a mess.

A black person shows up really late for work, does a half ass job, disappoints everyone in the process and other black people blindly act as if they still should be worshiped for even showing up while pointing fingers at everyone else. First time in history folks.

Posted by Anonymous | February 6, 2011 9:37 PM

After the 2008 election, President-elect Obama and his wife made the obligatory - and traditional- White House visit.

They showed up 10 minutes early.

Isn't it time for others to follow their lead?

come on people! that was a wack ass show!! i have no problem with her being late! the sound system when the dj's were on sounded great! her show sounded terrible,i like to hear songs done live as long as theyre tight! the backup singers were wack, the band wasnt tight and they tried to drown us out with volume! dont be fooled people, that was a wack ass show! i stayed for 4 joints and had to break out! how can you open up with bob marleys "forever loving jah" and just murder the song like that!! it was sad. people were waking out from the opening joint crowd looked bored..lauryn voice was good but everything else was terrible! lauryn get these fools out your ear hyping you up to think your shows are on point!! a disappointed fan...

I was at her Montclair NJ Concert. I was humbled by her when she brought her whole family out on the stage. Her son Joshua was so cute doing his little dance and singing. The crowd came alive at the end when she sang her hits. Prior to that, people were leaving and I was not feeling her performance. She did have a lot of energy and still sounds great. I probably won't attend another one of her concerts; she doesn't seem to appreciate her fans showing up late like that and all. Her fans are the reason she's successful to begin with. Losing her fans is not the thing she should be doing right now but that seems to be what's happening. Too bad because she's a unique and legendary talent.

Posted by Cat | February 7, 2011 10:22 AM

I only heard about the show today. Wish I had been there!

"No set starting time" is a bad business practice. It creates confusion and unmet expectations, inevitably leading to "starting late" accusations. It's bad for the artist and bad for the audience. Whoever is responsible for that decision should really rethink it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 7, 2011 11:40 AM

I attended her concert in charleston SC.

It was amazing. I coulc careless what time she got there. . . .this is LAURYN HILL. I have waited 10+ years so whats a few extra hours?!?

Do you know what she stands for? Youtube. Lauryn Hill Speech. She is a GIFT FROM GOD. A Gem.

You people are so clouded by what music is.. . . . . she gave me, us REALness.

Name one artist that is as real as she?!?

Posted by Iwent | February 7, 2011 3:31 PM

the only knock on the show was the sound guy. he played it a scosh too high for the building........even still the band was on point
....in my opinion it was a night of "encores' in the sense that we'd already been there, saw a great show, was wondering if she'd do anything else, then BAM! "Ex Factor" BAM! "When It Hurts So Bad" BAM! "Zimbabwe" BA -you get the point....all reincarnated versions that if you left after hearing you felt uplifted....the sound may have changed, but the vibration was still there...

Posted by Anonymous | February 7, 2011 8:57 PM

lotta non-regular black people commenting in this thread. Wonder how they got directed here, cuz they sure as hell dont read BV normally. "REALness" lol shut the fuck up moron.

Lauryn Hill is a truly brilliant, gifted, once-in-a-generation artist.
Judging by her recent behaviors, she also appears to be a very angry young woman in a good deal of distress. She seems truly unhappy, and she does not look well at all. Nobody can expect to successfully manage a career this way.

I will not pretend to diagnose her issues, but she clearly needs help, and I pray that she gets it.

Posted by MaryC3 | February 9, 2011 2:10 PM

I went to the House of Blues show in Atlantic City. Waited 3+ hours for her to get on stage. Soon as she got on, we left. Who wants to see an artist that has no respect for her fans?

I go to shows constantly and you could understand 45 minutes or something in that ballpark. Because you know it's very likely for a legitimate reason. This goes on EVERY time she plays. It's completely unacceptable. I heard from people I know who stayed that she played one song and left again. It's disrespectful. I'm not paying homage to someone like that.

And it'd be different if she puts on a great show. I saw her at RTB NY, it was just some neo soul set. It's not beautifully artistically original, for those defending her. If you like it, cool. But the shit's been done before. At RTB, the whole crowd flocked to her stage to look utterly bored halfway through. So I didn't expect a blast.

As far as doors go, they opened at 9. She'd be on at 11 (allegedly). 2 hrs is decent for doors but at least put some opening acts on to entertain. Otherwise, it's tiring. Or is Ms. Lauryn too good for an opening act? It's bullshit. No artist has the right. WE, the fans, make them. It's like Erik Sermon said once, If any artist you see on the street refuses to give an autograph or anything, punch them in the face. You made them who they are. Fuck Lauryn Hill. No excuse.
