The Hold Steady @ Northsix in 2007 (AngryCitizen)

Brendan was at The Hold Steady's second of two shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night, 1/31, and had this to say:
"Remarkable set. One of my favorites, no doubt. Great crowd energy, band seemed to be having a great time. Keys or no keys, they still rule.If you missed both shows, tickets are still on sale for their April 8th Terminal 5 gig.Craig noted that they played their first show there eight years ago to the day when it was North Six on January 31, 2003. Interesting that they're now closer to that lineup than they were for most of their existence. Full circle."
Videos from the MHOW shows, including proof of Craig's comment about 8 years, and both setlists below...

"..and they still suck."
I can't fathom anyone who has ever seen The Hold Steady live saying they suck.

their live performance may be amazing, but i think their songs are terrible, which amounts to very little in my estimation

This band is great live and on record. Some people are just no fun.
Those setlists look fucking awesome, so bummed I couldn't make it to either.

Glad you people had fun though.

"i have seen the hold steady more times than i have ever wanted to - and i can assure you...they suck."
oh really? Are you a soundguy at a venue they play a lot or something? Otherwise please explain why you keep seeing a band that "sucks"

I miss the keys, but they still scorched last night. And "adderall"was a perfect way to open.

I dont know if it's a complement or a criticism, but this band really does hold steady

I get it. The Hold Steady are very polarizing. Some people love them passionately and others don't get the appeal at all.
Every time there is a story about the Hold Steady the comments are exactly the same.
I agree with 5:02, this band needs Franz. Kicking him out (or publicly saying he wanted to move on, whatever) was the worst thing they ever did. The new album is total shit. I have seen them twice now promoting this record and they are just not the same without him.
Anyways, sorry. Please continue with the whole Hold Steady rules! Hold Steady sucks!
This conversation has really made me think. And poop.

Have they stopped closing with Killer Parties? It's been a year or two since I last saw them so I may have lost track.

If we simply stop giving them press coverage, The Hold Steady will fade away.
Posted by Anonymous | February 1, 2011 6:04 PM
I hate them. They are old.
Posted by Anonymous | February 1, 2011 6:12 PM
@5:49 Yeah, they stopped doing that a few years back. It had to go eventually, but it really was an unbelievable set closer. "And we're the hold steadyyyyy"
Posted by Paul | February 1, 2011 6:14 PM
They have no one on keys now? I saw them about a year ago in Albany and they had a keyboard player. Wasn't Franz, but they had someone.
Posted by Anonymous | February 1, 2011 6:16 PM
Yeah, the last time they came through, they had a random keyboard player. This time, it was more like the "Almost Killed Me" lineup.
