Bieber Tyler

The skateboarding, hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA, Odd Future, OF, Golf Wang) are blowing up. Their lyrics are in your face and offensive, and they have a style that sounds like, to quote Earl, the "reincarnation of '98 Eminem" (FREE EARL!) - more so than the often referenced Gravediggaz HorrorCore anyway. The beats are all made in house by the Odd Future crew and are usually heavy on the synthesizers and bass lines. The signature OF sound is best on display in Tyler, the Creator's new song, 'Yonkers.' The self-directed video for the song has reached over 1.8 million views on YouTube since its February 11th debut. Kanye West tweeted it as "The video of 2011."

They just wrapped up a short sold out East Coast tour, performed with the Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (which included a swagged out co-sign by Mos Def), had a lunch meeting with Jay-Z and finally got to hang out with Justin Bieber. Tyler, the Creator recently signed to XL and will release his second album, 'GOBLIN,' in April. MellowHype (Hodgy Beats & Left Brain) also just announced that they will be re-releasing their most recent record, 'BlackenedWhite,' with two bonus tracks. No details on a label or signing yet, but I'm sure it won't be long before we hear more. UPDATE: the album is coming via Fat Possum.

The group are heading to SXSW in March and Coachella in April - their only dates at the moment, but a full blown tour is definitely on the horizon.

I was lucky enough to tag along with Odd Future on a Chinatown bus to Philadelphia, the day after their Fallon performance (which was the day after their Santos Party House show). Our destination was their sold out show that night at the Barbary which ended up being completely insane. Before the show they skated around the City of Brotherly Love, ran up the ROCKY steps and ate cheese steaks. The bus ride and all the craziness in Philly was documented by MTV (with a bit of my help). Check out the video entitled "The Wonderful Adventures of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All", below. Swag!

"I'm a table" ok, that made me like these guys a little more.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 1:08 AM

When Lil' B makes a "I'm Tyler The Creator" song then they'll pass for cool.

Posted by youractualmom | March 1, 2011 1:25 AM

I heard they don't smuggle drugs on their tour bus. They smuggle shitloads of hummus and pita chips. They stole sabra's secret recipe.

I'm laughing out loud at how Kanye said "Yonkers" was "the video of 2011." It's okay, but it's not ground-breaking or anything. It's just Tyler eating a cockroach, getting shirtless, then his silhouette hanging itself. Looking forward to him trying to justify this when he storms the stage and says, "...BUT TYLER, THE CREATOR HAD ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS OF ALL TIME... OF ALL TIME!!!"

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 8:08 AM

CREATOR PLEASE. This shit blows.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 9:52 AM

@1:05, proof that while you are commenting on blogs, i'm fucking your mom in the ass in your brother's room.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 9:57 AM

Golf Wang! I can only imagine how big the next show will be. Part of me almost wishes that they play the otherwise abominable T5, simply because that's a lot of rage to contain in one room.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 10:02 AM

Is that the kid from Weeds?

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 10:17 AM

Good luck getting anyone 21+ to jump around at the live shows. If you're not jumping around like a kid, you have to actually listen to the music. And that my friends, would not be a good thing for this group.

They'll get their first taste of 21+ at SXSW (but we know how gullible all those people are)..

Young arrogant kids in a 'collective'...I think I'll pass

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 11:00 AM

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important?

Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

I'm fired, aren't I?

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 11:25 AM

"We're doing something new, so you cant say anything bad about it".

Ummm, no youre not. Also aspiring to be Kanye isnt an admirable trait. If they want mainstream attention, then they cant legitimately be "dangerous and edgy". Doesnt work that way.

Posted by GregBX | March 1, 2011 12:14 PM

I saw that Fallon performance and it was awful. I wouldn't even have been into when I was a teenager in the early 90s when underground hip hop and punk went hand in hand for me. I'm also really sick of seeing these stupid photos of this Tyler kid. Looks like a idiot. And Jesus, name dropping Supreme nonstop? I've never heard their recorded tracks, but this is a flurry of warning shots for me to stay away. Thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 12:40 PM

Man I hate you self-important fucking hipsters. These kids are 16-17 years old making things happen. You were still in the marching band trying to make the switch from "mildly overweight band geek" to "mildly overweight band geek who listens to The Smiths."

This is the closest thing to punk rock that has happened in awhile. Sad to see no one recognizes it anymore.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 12:47 PM

^^^hell yeah

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 12:58 PM

This is the closest thing to punk rock that has happened in awhile. also twilight books are the closest thing to shakespeare and hummus jokes are the closest thing to lenny bruce.

HOT ASS BEAT CLAP

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 1:10 PM

Tyler is 23

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 1:12 PM

Was he sniffing Biebz' ass and they struck a pose when the camera was pointed?

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 1:16 PM

Mosh pits break out at their shows, and kids print their own t-shirts of the group...so I guess that's all it takes to be punk today? Not at all, there's tons of bands active in hardcore today.

Just because these guys stagedive, all of a sudden theyre the 2nd coming of Black Flag. Fuck outta here.

Posted by GregBX | March 1, 2011 1:20 PM

And, there he is again, making the same stupid face that he makes in every other picture. I'll be glad when this Odd Future guy is done and working at Starbucks--if he's lucky.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 1:20 PM

I fucking love it that there's a photo of Justin Bieber and all the disgust is directed at this Tyler guy. Must be really bad..

you don't know shit.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 12:47 PM

Wrong. Its shock hipster hip hop and is nothing remotely close to punk rock, especially from the 80's.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 6:32 PM

Ok, Ok fucking relax all of you dumbass adults taking time out of your self-righteous, self-important days to talk shit about teenagers. They're having a shit ton of fun, getting recognized worldwide (they did shows in London), by hip-hop fans and celebs alike including well-respected ones in hip-hop like mos-def and the roots.

You all are fucking jealous of these kids and are afraid they'll fuck your girlfriend and you'll be back to beating your meat, which is what you were doing all day when you were their age.

It's fun music, the lyrics are SWAG and if you're too much of a pansy stick in the muddddd to get it stop reading about listening to it #retards.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 6:40 PM

Hummus-Hop.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 7:31 PM

Love the douche at 6:40 presuming we're jealous of a quasi-literate moron using shock tactics to get attention. Wow, dude, I think YOU are jealous. Of Odd Future, AND of us.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 8:01 PM

"I fucking love it that there's a photo of Justin Bieber and all the disgust is directed at this Tyler guy. Must be really bad.."

there's no reason to hate on justin beiber...blogs dont like him

you can all keep complaining about odd future, they'll just come back to new york and sell out another show to the people who aren't too pretentious to listen to music

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 8:31 PM

uh, there's MILLIONS of reasons to hate justin bieber; if you can't realize that you're just another reason.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 10:13 PM

theyre good. theyre just not worth all this hype. their beats for one, are simplistic goofiness, not classic deep masterpieces like rza's were.

Posted by Anonymous | March 1, 2011 10:22 PM

Reading this feels like listening to my whiney grandmother. It sounds like a lot of you need to stop complaining like pussies. Who reads an article on the internet and doesn't fuck with what ever its about and still decides to leave comments? All of you need to go back to watching Murder She Wrote or whatever shit you have going on in your lives and go care about that shit. This music is some seriously amazing shit and I just wonder if half of yall either know nothing about hip hop or are just a bunch of withered up prunes too out of touch to recognize good music.

gold wang

Posted by Anonymous | March 16, 2011 8:10 PM

Its a damn shame how the idiots here will hate on creativity. Golf Wang represents the edginess thats been watered down by A&Rs, record execs and sissies like you can't deal with the ugly side of truth. Hip Hop used to operate within the same vein with what these guys rap about. Now you idiots who criticize them, because of your being used to cozy complacent shitty rap music, can't deal with the grittiness. The minimalist production by Sid and Hodgy Beats caters to this newfound voice, that has been lost in the industry. Either grow a pair deez nuts or go retire at a nursing home where you won't have to deal with life -Pansies.

Posted by Spirit of Golf Wang | March 17, 2011 11:02 AM

Love it. Somethings finally changing in the rap scene. Rap needs something new and edgy. Everyone was freakin out when Emimen first came out. Buttt i wouldnt take the lyrics to serious lol.

Posted by moods | March 26, 2011 10:06 PM

Plain and simple? These dudes "suck".

You want hip hop? Reach for mobb deep.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2011 11:40 PM

I bet half of you losers dont understand fucking music. This shit is better than almost or all of rap. you douchebags dont listen to the lyrics. You people really need to learn music. Dont be mad because yall are at home not doing a fucking thing.

Posted by wolf | March 2, 2012 1:46 AM

^ I am doing something. And it's called fucking your girlfriend. Peaceout Wolf. Your 5 minutes is over. Go back to making your weak ass beats.
