they started rolling credits 3/4 way through their first song, did a couple of voice over ads, then just straight cut out to commercials and the local news ~7 secs into their second song

Arcade Fire... Bringing the hummus to the world stage.

Lol... SO HAPPY!!! arcade fire won album of the year!! yey, it's been a long time for them to get some recognition!!! For those of you that don't know, stop asking and start googling....

Posted by Ava | February 13, 2011 11:38 PM

11:36 - the grammys isn't intended for the real music you're probably thinking of. That's what makes this AF win so unusual.

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2011 11:38 PM

Totally off topic but the last time I saw The Arcade Fire, there was this amazingly annoying couple who were not only talking during the whole show but were talking about TMI info. The guy kept asking her "Do you like my seven and a half inches? Do you like my seven and a half inches? Is it the biggest you've ever had?" Yeah bro you're cool

I know from inside sources that the Grammys are rigged... Lots of inside corporate bribes and backroom deals with music executives and hummus barons.

These guys have always sucked, and their alignment with schmaltzy Grammy productions only makes it easier for me to hate them!

so pissed justin bieber didn't win best new artist...so heart broken...

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2011 11:46 PM

so happy for arcade fire, they definitely deserve it. when they didnt even win best alternative album, I didnt think there was a chance in hell they would beat "mainstream music". The fact that so many people are disappointed and wondering "who the hell is arcade fire" makes it even better.

Posted by indie music | February 13, 2011 11:46 PM

Arcade Fire wins Album of the Year.
This is a CLEAR sign that worldwide chickpea sales will be skyrocketing.

Every once in awhile some things are right in this fucted up world. Arcade Fire is a million times better than all those lame ass records. I hope some Egyptian is still dancing by the Nile with more reason to celebrate. Truth can prevail with a wee bit of effort...

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2011 11:53 PM

Ha Ha! Local news is still running Lady gaga stories because they thought she was a shoe-in to win Best Album. Hilariously deflated!

I'm sorry but if you don't know who are Arcade Fire then you don't know much about good music nowadays lol. Nuff' Said.

Posted by Mathias | February 13, 2011 11:54 PM

James murphy is bitter he didnt produce that album so will invent more lies in another attempted money grab

If you don't know Arcade Fire you have no business commenting on anything music related. It's as simple as that. You don't even have to like them.

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2011 11:58 PM

Bob Dylan and Mumford and Sons was the highligt of the Grammys. I predict M & Ss Album of the Year in 2012.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:01 AM

I thought Grammy's were keeping the results secret. Arcade Fire obviously knew they were going to win Album of the Year. They left time in the broadcast for them to perform a second song. Also Jay-Z and Alicia Keys both weren't there. "Empire State of Mind" was nominated for Record of the Year. They obviously were told they were not going to win. Otherwise I can't imagine neither of them being there if the song had won, which was very much possible. It was one of the most popular songs and actually the best one among the nominees.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:02 AM

why didnt kanye get it, he got a 10, arcade fire didnt get a 10

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:04 AM

Finally a real band wins album of the year. Amazing. The pros: Indie band takes the grammy, The performance wasn't lipsynched, The guitarist broke a string. = REAL.

The Cons: Win Butlers hitler haircut has to go. Please don't grow the stache. Looking more and more like der furher each day.

Kanye wasn't eligible for this year because his album was released after the cutoff date. The album will be at next year's Grammy's. Arcade Fire got lucky.

Who the fuck is Arcade fire?? Lady Gaga or Eminem should have won what the fuck?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:38 AM

I was wondering the same thing as 12:02. 12:19, can you please explain why both of us are idiots. They usually announce the album award right before the broadcast ends. They announced it 10 minutes early so that Arcade Fire can perform another song. What was going to happen in the next 10 minutes if they hadn't won? Were they going to start the nightly news early?

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:39 AM

"This is yet another sign of there no longer being a primary need for major label marketing and distribution services because of the internet. It's a brave new world!"

UMMM yeah... because Arcade Fire is distributed and marketed by Warner?

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:41 AM

Jesus, those tweets.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:42 AM

There was a broadccast online from the press room just now where the producer of the show said rthat egardless of if they won the final award or not, Arcade Fire were asked to play a second song because the producer guy "admired the band so much."

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:42 AM

This world, just a shit hole.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:45 AM

That sounds like a complete coverup bullshit. Telling Arcade Fire that they're gonna perform one more song after the winner is announced is the same as telling them "You won." Can you imagine Eminem or Lady Gaga winning and then them announcing "Now the losers Arcade Fire will perform another song!"

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:49 AM

was James Murphy there? What time did Daft Punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:01 AM

i feel like Black Keys was more deserving for album of the year, and Arcade Fire was better suited for alt album of the year

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:10 AM

AFLAC!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:10 AM

Mumford and Sons and Arcade fire were backstage discussing the benefits of ingesting hummus prior to their performances because of the energetic phyto-nutrient properties of the chickpea give them more stamina for frantic plucking of guitar strings.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:13 AM

THANK YOU EGYPT!

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:13 AM

hey assholes this isn't american idol...if arcade fire didn't win the awards, they would still be allowed to make music afterwards. The reason that would never happen with the other musicians is because they are egomaniacs (of a different elk than Winnie and friends), and they would never be expected to recoup in time to play.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:20 AM

The dream of the 90s is ali- oh, wait, wrong thread!

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:29 AM

damn that performance was good, but was it really the album of the year?

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:31 AM

Hey, you're the only asshole here. No one said Arcade Fire wouldn't perform. The producers would never end the show like that. Therefore the fact they were going to win must have been a given to Arcade Fire and anyone else who knew that they were going to perform one more time after the winner was announced.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:31 AM

ha ha i hated that album no wonder it won a grammy lol

Posted by dood | February 14, 2011 1:39 AM

James Murphy was behind it 1:34

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 1:43 AM

The weirdest thing about all the "who is Arcade Fire" tweets is that they PERFORMED A SONG 2 minutes before they won. Did everyone just happen to turn the TV on just as they announced album of the year?

Posted by maxfisher | February 14, 2011 2:15 AM

James Murphy offered to make me a plate of hummus today. What a guy. Then I listened to LCD houndparty.

I have no idea who this band is. I just tried to listen to 4 of their songs and turned them all off 15 seconds into them.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 2:47 AM

This band blows. I really wish some metal/deathmetal bands would win something.

Nice to see them win, even though the album is rather mediocre.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 8:17 AM

james murphy told everyone not to vote for arcade fire bc he didnt produce it but then put on his excited face after they won

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 8:51 AM

yay arcade fire

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 8:53 AM

All in all, this is a good thing. At least Arcade Fire has a self-made rock album that is actually trying to say something, even if it's not a wholly original or new thing to say.

Katy Perry didn't make an album, just a handful of singles. Eminem is all washed up. That "country" group is the blandest thing ever. And if you not dancing to it, why would you ever put on a Lady Gaga album?

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 9:10 AM

Total surprise...much deserved.

It was cool to see them spontaneously jump back on the stage to play another song, too. You could tell they were overwhelmed and humbled and super excited, and in a manufactured commercial/mainstream awards show, that's a rare thing.

Another highlight: Justin Bieber's face when he didn't win Best New Artist.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 9:13 AM

people pretend not to care about grammy winners because they feel the grammys never go to the most deserving artist. this is no different. just because an overrated indie rock band won doesn't mean the "right" artist won. the first song they performed was fucking awful, a gary glitter drum beat with a dude yelling in a microphone while that turd burglar with the shitty haircut yells some vapid pretentious shit about how his childhood totally sucked because he lived in some priveleged suburb. get real, this is just as bad as lady antebellum winning a bunch of awards for that shitty ass song they did.

Posted by milky | February 14, 2011 9:19 AM

And they won with their worst album - congrats.

Posted by GW | February 14, 2011 9:22 AM

I almost hope that "indie" rock gets commodified by the mainstream now so that y'all will understand what hip-hop heads have felt like since the late 90s.

Posted by matthew | February 14, 2011 9:28 AM

Of the 5 nominees, The Suburbs was definitely MY favorite, but I'm surprised that The Suburbs beat Lady Gaga.

2010 will be remembered for songs like "Poker Face;" not "Month of May." As thrilled as I am to see an "indie" band get some widespread recognition, this award is very unexpected.

Posted by Dan | February 14, 2011 9:29 AM

Hmmm...? Poker Face is from 2008. No?

And...Esperenza Spalding = I'd hit it.

Pumped that they one - but what a terrible performance. Month of May? Skater punks? Light show? ugh.

at least they redeemed themselves w Ready to Start - though with the ads played over it. Arcade Fire, brought to you by Delta.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 10:37 AM

TV on the Radio will win next year.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 10:40 AM

Arcade Fire had music during the Super Bowl and sold out Madison Square Garden. They were on the cover of practically every major music magazine over the past 4-5 years. This is hardly them "making it", yet for many a Grammy victory somehow means that they've beaten the "system". This was a calculated move. The Grammy's know there are a zillion people blogging about Arcade Fire on their mp3 blogspot's. They want to craft an image that isn't simply "the Grammy's suck". They will now always go back to the "but Arcade Fire won" argument.

Shame on the people watching this show for their lack of discovery. It's disgusting. Then again, it's not like I know much or care much about some shitty Pop star. What it comes down to is the casual fans are pissed "why didn't my favorite controversial superstar win?" the indie kids are "Congrats Arcade Fire but now indie rock is dead".

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 10:45 AM

Winning a grammy is like getting a gold medal at the special olympics.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 11:03 AM

10:45pm, you said it perfectly. I also want to add that just because AF won doesn't mean the Grammys have been redeemed. To the "indie" universe, it's cool, but to the rest of the world, it's just another Herbie Hancock-over-Kanye West type win they'll forget even happened when the nominees next year include Taylor Swift, Robert Plant, an obligatory hip-hop album, Foo Fighters and Lady Gaga. Arcade Fire (and "indie" rock) were basically exploited last night.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 11:10 AM

I guess it's better then some of the other nominees, but god I just can't stand them. The lazy, pretentious lyrics, the same mid-tempo chord progressions over every song, the bizzarrely vaudvillian-hitler youth fashion and just the unbelievable self-importance. Then this great 'indie rock' band up there giggling like they've finally been invited to the cool kids party, like this is validation? Congrats, you joined the ranks of milli vanilli and mc hammer. You were up against Justin beiber and lady gaga for christsakes.

And on an entirely other note - how awful was bob Dylan? Does he have like alheimers now? Playing a song about slavery with two conservative southern country acts. This is what the great protest singer has been reduced to.

I'm sorry to be excessively negative like every other post, but I just don't see this is a victory for anyone. Indie rock is just a band that hasn't been offered the chance to sell out.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 11:15 AM

I wish for once someone like the Arcade Fire would take award and wipe their asses with it during the acceptance speech and then hurl it into the crowd. That would be rock n' roll.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 11:27 AM

do you guys think indie rock even still exists?... traditional mainstream media is meaningless now and the NARAS is acknowledging that by playing to a market with actual growth potential (niche hipster folk like yourselves)-- plus can we honestly say any of these groups are that obscure or 'indie' when access to their music is as easy as tuning in to BV. Sure, indie rock is dead... and if the major labels have any chance of survival they'll assist in developing these new acts. Point is, the Grammys are just a television show... and they mean less now than ever before. To quote the great Eddie Vedder ( whom didn't even show up last night), upon winning best hard rock performance in 96': "I don't know what this means... I dont think it means anything... thats just how I feel... and there's too many bands and you've heard it all before, so... um my dad would have liked it, my dad died when I was young..."

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 11:36 AM

People outside of Quebec in Canada laugh at French-Canadian "culture," and the AF are a good example of why that is.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 12:08 PM

Everyone knows Gaga SHOULD have won, deserved it much more in fact - AF only won because of their connections in the Obama camp.

Posted by Bob | February 14, 2011 2:33 PM

Wrong analysis. Neil Young has a very distinct whiney voice all his own.

Posted by Anonymous | February 14, 2011 2:39 PM

OK, ARCADE FIRE SUCKS THEIR PROFORMANCE WAS AWFULY BAD WISH MANY AGREE. I THINK ITS A BIG INSULT TO EMINEM FOR HE MADE GREAT UP LIFTING MUSIC THIS YEAR. I WOULD SKIP THE NEXT GRAMMYS NEXT YEAR IF I WERE HIM. BUT HE DID BEAT OUT JAYZ FOR RAP SO THAT COOL I GUESS. LADY B. ONE SONG WAS OK WORTH ONE GRAMMY NOT 3 OR 4 LORD. SEEMS SET UP

Posted by loreal coupons | February 14, 2011 3:44 PM

And we all know Kanye is going to win everything next year. To all of you Gaga/ Eminem spammers/ interns/ neanderthals- your artist finally didn't win something. You are exactly what the suits running the record labels want. Your blind loyalty, while other bands who are better deal with the stupid hate and whining because your band didn't win.

But it goes the other way too- had Gaga / Eminem won, every commenter on here would just be bitching about the Grammy's. One way or the other, people would be bitching. Arcade Fire are now a subversive tool to appeal to any kid in Brooklyn wearing flannel and know what MHOW is. But at the very least that's not what they want to be. They're just kind of playing that role for whoever is supposedly running the show. I'm guessing their next album will be an "In Utero" type album. But who knows.

So shut up and embrace this for a second. An actual talented band won what is supposedly the biggest award on the biggest stage. If you had never heard of them, then you're really freakin' sheltered, and you will hopefully learn more about music some day.

Jethro Tull!!!

@ 12:04, Kanye wasn't in the eligibility year.

As 4:18 said, "So shut up and embrace this for a second. An actual talented band won what is supposedly the biggest award on the biggest stage. If you had never heard of them, then you're really freakin' sheltered, and you will hopefully learn more about music some day."

This. Is relevant.
An actual band. Not just protools and autotune. A band. Musicians. It's not a huge deal, but it's just a tiny sign that some of us still love the noise made by instruments and voices. So shut up a minute.

Guys, all in all, this is an 'alternative' music website. The Grammys, as much of a joke they've become, is still music's biggest recognition. We should all come together as one to celebrate the first indie-rock album to ever win Album of the Year.

So many of you people are fucking morons. If you're incapable of writing a somewhat-coherent statement, why should I think your idiotic ramblings have any validity whatsoever? I've been an Arcade Fire fan for several years, & I'm mostly happy for them. I'm glad (& surprised) that they beat out the over-hyped hacks they were up against. I just hope the band will stay genuine & won't focus on how much money they could make if they developed a more mainstream sound. Oh, & quit comparing Win to Hitler; many guys have had haircuts like that before, & I hear Win's actually a pretty nice guy, so lay off.
