Dum Dum Girls

"Dum Dum Girls take their minimalism seriously, from their stripped-down girl-group rock to their decision to limit their stage names to a single invented moniker. Singer Dee Dee, guitarist Jules, bassist Bambi, and drummer Sandy barely acknowledged the sold-out crowd at Johnny Brenda's on Saturday night, or each other, for that matter. Dee Dee, whose real name is Kristin Gundred, parted with a few words at the beginning and end of the hour-long set, but other than that, she was all business.

Business, it turned out, was good, good enough to justify the ferocious buzz that has built around the band since it released its first album, I Will Be, last year." [Philadelphia Inquirer]

One night before the Philly show Dum Dum Girls brought their tour with Dirty Beaches to Bowery Ballroom. As you know, a new iteration of Frankie Rose was also on the bill, as was MINKS who played the same venue with Wild Nothing and Abe Vigoda not long ago. More pictures from the Friday night NYC show, including a semi-legible one of the DDG setlist, are below...

Sweet old pics of The Bangles and What's Eating Gilbert Grape-era Johnny Depp, but did anyone take any of the Dum Dum Girls or Minx?

Nice to know 'Dee Dee' has been able to pull the wool over peoples eyes and have the whole world ignore her shitty Yeah Yeah Yeahs ripoff band. "Grande Ole Party" indeed.

Wow, what beautiful women.

MEH MEH Girls...

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2011 3:27 PM

I wonder when the fashion trend for indie female musicians and hipster chicks in general is going to 180 and have them dressing like prudes again.

Black Wolf Beach FTW in 2012

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2011 3:50 PM

i hate this band. seriously who would think after listening to i will be that ddg would have less live presence than the empty cups littering the floor of bowery. completely lifeless. come off as more unappreciative deedee, you bitch.

Oh to be the hose on Dee Dee's legs ~

Onstage, Dee Dee had so much charisma when she was a drummer (in her previous band). Playing guitar on the bigger stages, she gets a lamentable meh.

The new EP is pretty awesome though.

saying "meh" never gets old! this blog smells like stereogum.

Posted by anon | March 7, 2011 4:06 PM

Meh...

combing hair gif is great

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2011 4:08 PM

Yeah, what the frig happened to Stereogum over the past year or so? They used to have some personality, post original content, (try to) be funny and so on. Now, they just update with the bare necessities new mp3s, Brandon will jack off about some metal band no one cares about, the new girl will talk about some lame indie pop band or Drake and one of them will write a premature evaluation of an album. I have no idea of Scott or Amrit still works there. Amrit used to put up good stuff, though.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2011 4:11 PM

seriously what happened to stereogum? that blog used to MATTER.

Posted by anon | March 7, 2011 4:16 PM

Stereogum's comment section has nothing on BV's

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2011 4:16 PM

"Wow, what beautiful women."

Not all of them though. What's up with the Lizbeth Salander clone? Far too much makeup on all of them.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2011 4:18 PM

someone call marnie stern! she will be sure to join in the criticizing of women in bands who wear make up.

Dum Dum Girls - CA roots

what would they choose?

@3:06pm - Nice one with the Johnny Depp zing, you beat me to it.

Seriously, Benny and Joon (as I like to call him) was really going for broke that night. I was standing near him while DDG played and in between jaunts up and down the stairs to the backstage area (to make sure everyone could see him in his all-access glory), he was getting super molesty with a little blond girl that had to be all of 19. Ordinarily, I'd say go for the gold on that last point, but due to his douche-factor of 11, I award him no points and may god have mercy on his soul.

Dum Dum Girls were fantastic. I do worry that they are beginning to attract a bit of a meathead following, but I really can't blame anyone for digging these gals. Top form.

Boycott Bowery Presents!

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2011 6:24 PM

There was an L.A. 80's pop glam punk band and the Dum Dums are trying to do an almost identical thing it seems.

Try more music talent and less image.

at 3:23pm, Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner plays on “Yours Alone.”

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2011 8:24 PM

I foresee Black Beach Girls being the hottest band of 2K12. Followed closely by Deer Wolf Bear

Hey grrrls,
is it "business in the front party in the back" or what?!

Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2011 2:58 PM

Hey 3:42pm,
Do you ever wonder if the trend for indie female musicians and hipster chicks in general is going to 180 and have them acting like they dress again?
I sure do...where are the exciting ladies?
Less prude more nude, I say.
