Strokes

Thanks to some tweets back on 2/16 while they were filming, we know that the extravagent surroundings in the new "Under Cover Of Darkness" video are in fact Loew's Theater in Jersey City (where maybe you're seeing Jeff Mangum play later this year). Check out the new Strokes video for "Under Cover Of Darkness", and listen to "You're So Right" from the new album (the 2nd Angles song they've released), below...

To attract younger consumers to Athenos, a brand of hummus, Greek yogurt, feta cheese and pita chips, usually staid Kraft Foods Inc. launched very unconventional advertising featuring Greek grandmas who are highly conservative but forthright.

In a series of commercials for Kraft’s Athenos that launched on Monday, yiayia—the Greek word for grandmother—makes strong comments on today’s world.

In one commercial, a Greek grandmother criticizes her granddaughter in a red dress for “dressing like a prostitute.” But the young woman is promptly forgiven when yiayia founds out that she is serving her friends Athenos hummus, which is “approved” by yiayia.

In another spot, yiayia tells a young couple that they will go to hell for living together without getting married. But the narrator tells the couple not to worry since yiayia is happy that they are having Athenos Greek yogurt, which she approves. The commercial ends with a voice-over, “Athenos. Maybe the only thing approved by yiayia.”

Not crazy about "You're So Right." It's only all right.

I don't see this album being all that great. An early review I read said the styles of each song are all over the place. My guess is The Strokes will be right on par with recent Weezer releases where the first single tugs at the heartstrings for people who enjoyed their early work, then you hear the rest of it and it's all WTF.

strokes suck it

Not a fan of Strokes (or of that "genre" in general), but that is a good pop-rock song. Nothing ground breaking, just a solid song. Better than anything on Top 40 radio right now.

i like to STROKE my rod thinking about Julian Fernando Casablancas

You know there was not 1 rock song on the top slot of billboard top 40 all of 2010! We need a good rock song!

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 9:57 AM

Uhh, 9:57, you're forgetting about a little band called Train who came in at #3 with the beautiful game changer, "Hey Soul Sister."

Don't worry, I'm sure Nickelback will release an awesome top 40 rock anthem for 2011. As Mr. Young said, "Rock and Roll Will Never Die."

Loew's Jersey City is such an amazing place

Agree with 10:24. the theatre stands the test of time. the tune won't.

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 10:39 AM

@10:24 - I agree. Thank god the Strokes are not playing there. It's bad enough they filmed a video there!

Haha I just walked in on my little bro jerking off to the pics in this post.

>Not crazy about "You're So Right." It's only all right.

the bass line at the beginning of the song is taken from either one of their other tunes or one of j.c.'s solo record. i need to listen more, but i'm pretty sure it's borrowed from something past strokes or strokes-related.

PLEASE do not refer to Julian Casablancas as "J.C."!!! There is only one J.C....and that is Jiminy Cricket!!

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 11:03 AM

had to pick one of the worst screen grabs from the video huh?

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 11:14 AM

11:03 sorry JC from Backstreet Boys will always be JC TO ME!

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 11:23 AM

I am not Jesus/Though I have the same initials...

Sorry, kiddies. Jarvis Cocker is the only JC worth noting

I watched this new video and then I watched a few of their old clips from "This Is It." Gotta say they look really bored now by comparison. I think them getting back together for this album is mainly a cash grab/contractual obligation and Angles will be even worse than First Impressions of Earth.

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 12:13 PM

@10:52, it's that solo song that goes "getting the hang of it getting the hang of it" although the solo songi s 10 X better

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 12:28 PM

there is one song on this record that songs like "reelin in the years" that they shoulda put out as the lead... cause its the best song on the album. you'll probably hear it next. rest of the album is, in fact, all over the place.

not good.

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 2:23 PM

wow what a hipster douche!

Posted by Anonymous | March 2, 2011 4:30 PM

Albert Hommond Jr needs to start wearing a babushka ala Little Steven. He's making them look too old.

that leather jacket & his bullshit image is enough to have me never listen to these fucks again. go die.
