Roseland is on fire (photo by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer)
Roseland

"At about 10:40 p.m. we received word of a 2nd Alarm at 239 West 52nd Street and 8th Avenue, better known as Roseland Ballroom. A live scanner feed confirmed, and according to reports we're getting over the newswire Con Ed has been requested to the scene. The NYScanner Twitter described the fire as "heavy," and EmergencyStream says it's on the mezzanine level.

One woman nearby Tweeted: "Big fire at the Roseland ballroom across the street! So many fire trucks... the street is all lit up!" There were no shows scheduled at the venue tonight." [Gothamist]

Are there ever?

Update: CBS Says, "The fire was declared under control at 11:46 p.m. Six firefighters suffered minor injuries. No other injuries were reported."

"Roseland Ballroom on fire? I'm supposed to see Janelle Monae there!"

Apparently so.

"Are there ever?" Nice insensitive comment, shitsock. People still work there and have jobs and have to feed their kids. Not everyone can string together shitty HTML and write articles about next week's days-old hot genre. Assholes.

I blame Roseland's stoppage of booking shows for the rise of Terminal 5. The scourge you've unleashed upon us.

BURN.

Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2011 11:47 PM

Atoms for Peace! Never forget.

Posted by Anonymous | March 8, 2011 11:50 PM

BURN BABY BURN!

Posted by guy who hates roseland | March 8, 2011 11:57 PM

high and on fire

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:06 AM

Good riddance. Maybe know they'll turn it into something that's not a complete waste of space.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:08 AM

Hell must lie directly below Roseland and broken through, last time I was there for Atoms for Peace there was a fire underground right in front of it, and now there's a fire in it, hmm...

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:10 AM

Ha! What an overreaction! How is calling out the fact they never have shows insensitive, knee jerk fuck face? Do YOU even gave a job or do you take breaks between class to bring up irrelevant n

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:13 AM

"Maybe know they'll turn it into something that's not a complete waste of space."

You mean like a big corporate office building that will have no concerts?

Maybe we'll be really lucky and on the ground floor of the gigantic sterile corporate office tower they'll put in a bank or a drugstore chain.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:23 AM

This is an historic venue and it would be a major loss to NYC if it burned down. Like 12:23 said you'll just have more lame ass reatil or office space.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:26 AM

turn it into a super duane reade

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:32 AM

I HOPE TODD P CAN SAVE ROSELAND

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:44 AM

Never a good thing when a venue is ruined, regardless of their schedule or lack there of. The place is older than any of us and if its gone forever, it will be a loss. However, if its salvagable I hope it comes back better than ever.

Posted by Ben | March 9, 2011 12:46 AM

Rumors are flying that the cause of the fire was due to a faulty food processor.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:55 AM

@12:44 - i love todd palin!

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 1:08 AM

THEY WERE BURNING SAGE BEFORE THE BLACK PARTY ON MARCH 19TH AT ROSELAND.....
AND THE FIRE STARTED....

IT WILL BE HELL FOR BP....FOR SURE..

Posted by christophe touchard | March 9, 2011 1:10 AM

I've seen a ton of shows there, but I'm hard-pressed to think of when I was there last.

Posted by GregBX | March 9, 2011 1:15 AM

The sheer amount of incredibly talented performers that have graced the Roseland stage and the unbelievable history combine to make this venue a historic landmark. Most landmarks are just inscriptions on a placard on a wall somewhere where things once happened. Consider the fact that Roseland is a living, breathing landmark, fully operational (keeping my fingers crossed) that everyone can enjoy! It's not just a boring, depressing monument! If Roseland were destroyed it would totally, completely and utterly suck!

Posted by Z | March 9, 2011 2:00 AM

you guys, I told (cough..paid you) to burn down Terminal 5, not Roseland...

Posted by keyboard kat | March 9, 2011 2:51 AM

Good riddance. Maybe know they'll turn it into something that's not a complete waste of space.

Posted by ANUNTURI | March 9, 2011 5:12 AM

There are far worse venues in the city, and few with the historical character of Roseland.

Terminal 5, on the other hand, should be taken out with an air strike.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 6:16 AM

I have seen great shows there - Atoms for Peace, The Pogues, My Bloody Valentine, The Psychedelic Furs. Hopefully it will open again. It is 100% better than terminal 5.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 6:32 AM

damnit, was hoping T5 burned down

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 7:59 AM

what caused the fire......

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 8:17 AM

fire was caused by a homeless guy smoking crack.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 8:44 AM

2nd worst venue after Terminal 5. Just try to move around there and get a drink on a crowded night. Why aren't there more shows at Hammerstein Ballroom?

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 8:50 AM

Perfect location for a Super Wal-Mart.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 8:57 AM

The lack of shows there probably has more to due with the fact that Bowery Presents basically has a Monopoly on the booking scene here. They probably outbid Live Nation for shows and make it up for by re-selling their own tickets on the secondary market (LCD Soundsystem, Florence & The Machine).

Roseland destroys T5. At least everyone in the room can at least view the stage

8:50, sorry you're a huge puss and don't know how to navigate crowds. Not sure how you even make it in this city...

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 9:22 AM

Awesome. I hope this place burns down. Roseland sucks the sercurity staff and people who work there are the meanest people I have ever met in my life.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 9:53 AM

is it true ?

Posted by Simone | March 9, 2011 10:00 AM

Roseland is far from ideal, but it is better than T5 in every way.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:10 AM

Jesus you fucktards......Roseland Balroom is an historic NY venue. You idiots would be cheering if the Apollo caught fire lol

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:10 AM

drake did it.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:15 AM

No because at the people at The Apollo know how to keep a building up and running and provide customer service.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:23 AM

I saw Cats there.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:26 AM

this better not disrupt my plans for the Black Party!

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:26 AM

9:22 - Sightlines suck at Roseland too, I remember going to a show there and being back a bit, and I didn't see the band at all...

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 11:06 AM

Only short people complain about sightlines. Blame Mother Nature, not the venue.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 11:19 AM

Dropkick Murphys are moving their show to T5

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 11:20 AM

My VERY reliable sources tell me that the August Wilson theater will be expanding into the Roseland space after this fire, and a new show will open entitled "Chickpea Boys: The Story of Frankie Rose and the Four Outs"

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 11:50 AM

my first and only show there was Atoms For Peace and i got rail so i had no issues with the place

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 11:56 AM

good riddance, Roseland, last time I was there this guy kept asking his girl: "Do you like my 7 and a half inches?" "Was it the biggest you've ever seen?"

GOOD. RIDDANCE.

send em to T5, thanks

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:57 PM

my bar mitzvah was ruined because someone tried to blend chickpeas with a faulty cuisinart. as per their contracts, my father won't be paying the estates of arcade fire, my morning jacket, vampire weekend, phoenix, death cab, the xx, neon indian, the strokes, kings of leon, the hold steady, band of horses or lcd soundsystem, all of whom are said to have perished before the completion of my passage into manhood.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 12:58 PM

Yeah! Yeah! BV cuntistry! Do da dance!

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 1:58 PM

So is there a show going on at Roseland on Thursday or not?

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 5:20 PM

From what I read Thursday and Friday's shows are still on as planned.

Texas Transplant- now in Brooklyn.
TODD P. has AIDS. it's true! and it's not a rumor either.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 6:07 PM

Hammerstein isn't a Bowery venue...that's why. Hammerstein is great if you don't plan on drinking because the bar lines are the worst there. The Grand Ballroom is a gem and you can easily sneak downstairs to an empty Hammerstein and get high. A unique only in NY experience.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 6:24 PM

Yeah, Hammerstein's just owned BY A FUCKING CULT!
