Smith Westerns

The Smith Westerns played Knitting Factory on March 5, two days after a show at Mercury Lounge, and their last public stop on a pre-SXSW tour. But they're not headed off to Austin just yet. FIRST, a visit to a... department store....

saks flyer

After SXSW, they'll take a break before returning to NYC to play March 25th at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets are still on sale. From there they stay busy on the road with bands like Wilco and Yeasayer. All dates are below.

The Knitting Factory show was with Unknown Mortal Orchestra who Shanda says "ripped it with their heavy-guitar sound and catchy vocals." These pictures are from that show...

Ugh, just looking at that guy makes me want to barf.

Fuck those flash bulbs. That show was ruined by those lights on stage. Also, coordinating the spot light having a girl strip to her bra with Smith Westerns written on it is pretty weak.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 9:36 PM

Unknown Mortal Orchestra sucked dick---Smith Westerns not so bad.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 9:41 PM

Ezra Koenig called. He wants his hair back.
The guy from We Are Scientists called. He said to stop pretending you're him and trying to bang his wife from Au Revoir Simone.
BrooklynVegan comment board called. They want their boyish-faced hipster look back.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:28 PM

yeah those flashes were the worst, what the fuck?? totally unnecessary.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:43 PM

More like GAYed Knitting Factory... amirite?

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 10:49 PM

Unknow Mortal Orchestra = worst sound, worst guitar tone worst everything. they suck

Posted by Colonel K | March 9, 2011 11:03 PM

10:49 - Nope.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 11:40 PM

Is the guy in the first photo skipping? Skipping like a silly gay hipster

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 11:57 PM

who were those inconsiderate amateurs with cameras. Also not so classy pointing a spot light at the girl. I know the vast majority of people weren't so pleased with the situation.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 12:12 AM

In time, your pants will be judged as MC Hammer's were.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 12:14 AM

has anyone mentioned yet how the smith westerns suck?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 12:27 AM

You don't know shit. Unknown Mortal Orchestra were great all the way around. That drummer on the Vistalite kit was amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 12:28 AM

Unknown Mortal Orchestra were kinda tight, I agree with that. I laughed at the "we touched penises" part. Drummer is a babe.
Smith Westerns were tight but they come across as such assholes all of the time. They don't seem to enjoy being in a band at all

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 1:31 AM

I didn't know Tom Hanks had a band! Were these shots taken with an iPhone?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 3:15 AM

Nice Orchestra sucked dick---Smith Westerns not so bad.

Hummus Wave

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 3:57 AM

i hope brooklyn vegan didn't hire that "photographer" with the ridiculous flash set up. never seen a more in the way and obnoxious photographer at a show. he and his "assistants" were on stage as much as the band. totally ruined the show...

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 7:46 AM

Totally agree with S-W making it look like a bummer to be in that band. Keyboard player and drummer looked like they couldn't wait to get out of there.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 8:20 AM

@7:46am

I wasn't at this show, but by any chance did that photographer look like an arab Fred Savage? If it is, the same stuff was happening at The National show a month ago...Assistants, weird flash setups and all over the stage.....really makes photographers look bad.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 8:24 AM

^ hahaha arab fred savage! i was at that national show too. those guys are NOT concert photographers. they are total paparazzi douchebags. i hope it was them at this smith westerns show so that word starts to travel. those idiots do not belong at these shows.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 8:29 AM

hmm... was it by any chance this guy: http://www.bgustafssonphotography.com/

shoots for Guest of a Guest... who were most certainly the guys at the National show. looks like Guest of a Guest also covered the Smith Westerns show at Mercury Lounge...

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:03 AM

If that's him, then I need to show my friend. She used to screw that guy.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:19 AM

9:19 that's funny

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:21 AM

Someone should have said something or started a fight with one of the assistants. Lets not stand for this any longer. Next time these "professionals" get in the way I say we take 'em outside and show 'em what its like.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:28 AM

i'm not sure if that was them or not...sounds like it could be. i was distracted by his goofy white pants so i didn't notice the fred savage similarity.

yeah, it's bad business for venues to have these jokers there...on top of ruining it for people to see the bands. i heard a few people asking staff at knitting factory, "do you guys have these lights all the time?"

yeah, and the girl with the bra was just bizarre. kind of gave the show a nice whitesnake or poison feel...

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:30 AM

can someone explain exactly what happened? this is some pretty funny stuff.

so were lights setup as part of the performance or was it annoying photographers with wireless sync lights?

and what happened with the girl in the bra?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:32 AM

i felt like it was progressing towards a fight. it was kind of fun to watch the crowd get more and more angry...starting to yell at them as the set went on. as much as i'm not into tough guy stuff, i wouldn't have minded a random object being whipped at mr savage!

it was sync lights. flashing pretty much non-stop throughout the show. totally overkill...i mean, at the end of the day, how many pictures of "dudes with guitars" do you really need?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:43 AM

were they saying stuff to the band like "dude, do you know how awesome you are?" and "sounds great, could be louder though is all i'm saying!" in the most douchey was humanly possible? cuz that's what was going on at the National show. if so, i think we have pinpointed who these guys are.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:50 AM

They must be stopped.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:51 AM

Smith MEHsterns

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 9:52 AM

i think venues really need to police this kind of stuff and not allow it to happen. if they see someone come in with a rig like this simply tell them "you're aren't using all that."

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 10:33 AM

I think the main problem is when these paparazzi event photographers get assigned by some scummy online magazine, and don't realize that flash is generally a big faux pas at concerts. Honestly, how often do you see photographers using setups like that?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 10:48 AM

UMO rules

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 11:01 AM

@ 10:48

that was the first (and hopefully only) time i've seen that at a show. i just hope these dudes aren't going to be at a lot of shows. WHOEVER hired them needs to know they are fools and might not want to post their photos on their site or whatever

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 11:04 AM

...and did one of them resemble an arab fred savage? that's the million dollar question.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 11:08 AM

The girl with the bra was weird...who does that anyway??

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 12:01 PM

(¬°)

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 1:50 PM

Totally lame. The singer bites all of Christopher Owens stage moves. Their songs are OK. Totally insecure, trust-fund brats that no one will care about in a year. Also the singer better milk it for all he can cause that hair is receding fast.

Pear-shaped boy needs to rethink his fashion choices.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 3:52 PM

pretty epic thread right here.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 4:08 PM

yeah, the skinny leg pant choice is rough on the eyes

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 4:14 PM

^especially when worn by annoying "photographers"

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 4:24 PM

do you think he's reading this? i hope so

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 4:58 PM

A large rig for taking photos isn't necessary... Just as a fancy food processor isn't necessary for making hummus. I actually use an old blender and it works out just fine.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 5:05 PM

This was sponsered by Rag & Bone, right? I assume the annoying photographers were hired by them to take pics of the band for their website or something.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 5:18 PM

Still tight pants?

They've got some balls to go up on stage and show their fanbase that they have very little (if any) balls.

Posted by Burg | March 10, 2011 5:21 PM

Can you comprehend anything you read 5:18, or are you really that stupid?

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 5:21 PM

My favorite skinny pants dudes are the ones where it's all tapered and tight from ankle to taint, and then they have like giant shoebox hips shoved in there.

Yeah bro, you're cool.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 6:44 PM

Old Jnco Rave pants > Skinny pants

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 7:01 PM

nice clothes losers.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 7:17 PM

nicest band in all of indie rock

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 10:10 PM

@10:10

I don't think so. I work for a venue that they once played and they were without a doubt that nastiest brats I had ever had the misfortune to meet. To see them getting popular just proves how music is such a joke now.

Posted by Anonymous | March 10, 2011 10:52 PM

I saw them open for Wavves and I must say they seemed like total ego-inflated cocksuckers. This was them OPENING for WAVVES.

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2011 12:10 AM

they are the next wavvves!

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2011 12:43 AM

@ 10:52...I'm going to go out on a limb here and say 10:10 was being sarcastic!!!!! god you dummy

Posted by Anonymous | March 11, 2011 12:54 AM

i like their songs! they have the potential.
