The Mountain Goats
The Mountain Goats

John Darnielle's The Mountain Goats played their first of three shows at Bowery Ballroom with the amazing Megafaun last night (3/28). Surprise guest Craig Finn from the Hold Steady (whose upcoming Terminal 5 show was being advertised via projection on the wall at last night's LCD Soundsystem show) came out and sang on "This Year" as you can watch in a video below.

And they do it again tonight (3/29). More pictures, the video and the setlist from last night, below...

ohhhh... so that's why my roommate was gone all night and didn't wake up at her regular hour!

Craig Finn was there!?! Shit! I was going to this, but canceled to go to LCD soundsystem, which was terribly incompetent. Half the audience walked midway through the set. I wish I went to this instead.

I think the whole barefoot performer thing is kind of gross. That stage have to be pretty dirty, dusty and sticky. At least put on some sandals or slippers.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 10:42 AM

what do you mean, the audience walked midway through their set? half the people cleared out?

Posted by tawn | March 29, 2011 10:43 AM

one pathetic person keeps insisting that half the crowd walked out on LCD soundsystem last night. this is the fourth such time he has made the claim.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 10:48 AM

at least they didn't walk out on the mountain goats! that would be a tragedy. lulz!

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 10:52 AM

It wasn't half, but a large chunk walked. I was there. Good show regardless.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 10:59 AM

how long was the show?

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 11:20 AM

"one pathetic person keeps insisting that half the crowd walked out on LCD soundsystem last night. this is the fourth such time he has made the claim."

maybe this was true? BV, where are your pictures and review of lcd??

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 11:32 AM

Why are we talking about LCD on here? that band sucks! Who went to Mountain Goats?

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 11:37 AM

One pathetic singer made a special appearance last night, and I'm not talking about the LCD show. lulz!

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 11:39 AM

It's "cool" to reference LCD in other articles because they're the hot topic this week.

Just follow the hype.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 12:05 PM

LCDs in town? didnt hear about it yet. have to check that out. Craig Finn immediately flew from NY to the Final Four where he will play a pregame show with the Hold Steady opening for Sublime! Dreams do come true, frat boy heaven! Maybe since their singer is dead he can sing "Santeria" with them. wheres the BV pics for that show? Sponsored by AT&T shit show.

Zzzzzzzz .... LCD suckit ... Zzzzzz

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 12:19 PM

Cool. It appears I've left the bait for the douche trail in other non-LCD realted stuff. HAHA! My plan has finally come to fruition!

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 12:25 PM

Mountain Goats is the musical opposite of FUBU clothing.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 12:31 PM

i didn't know john oliver was in a band...

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 1:03 PM

LCD have nothing to do with the Mountain Goats. LCD are hipsters ripping off older bands. The Mountain Goats are true artists, that sing with gut-wrenching honesty!

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 1:10 PM

^You are "kid"ding. That is a really "baaad" comparison. Don't "ram" me with your opinions.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 1:16 PM

LCD rules. Mountain Goats suck. Thats the truth, not opinion.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 1:30 PM

"John" is barefoot on stage because the real John Darnielle died in a car crash in 1966. There are clues all over the albums.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 1:39 PM

Why would ANYONE see the mountain goats when they could have seen LCD!!!

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 1:41 PM

Honestly -- I put my love for the Mountain Goats up against anyone who hasn't actually left their home and family to follow John around...but the new album is disappointing and it looks like 7 songs on the set list were from it..add a dash of Tallahassee and some other oldies and maybe it gels..I don't know. It sure doesn't make me hit my head and say how did I miss this... If only John would have a 'classics' night and play all of Sunset Tree--or all of We Shall Be Healed...I guess when you have written 800 songs the mix can vary-- a lot...

This is also where "meh" comes from. Which is short for "mmmeeeeehhhhhhhh". A call started by real actual goats, popularized by douchebags.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 1:51 PM

No death metal band? I'm definitely going to request/yell it in Ithaca, then.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 1:53 PM

"This is also where "meh" comes from. Which is short for "mmmeeeeehhhhhhhh". A call started by real actual goats, popularized by douchebags."

Hilarious!

"If only John would have a 'classics' night and play all of Sunset Tree--or all of We Shall Be Healed"

That's a pretty recent interpretation of "classics."

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 2:02 PM

Anyone who has actually left their home and family to follow John around needs to get a fucking life.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 2:03 PM

^^ and a job

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 2:03 PM

Everybody on this blog need s a job! It's pathetic.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 2:11 PM

^ that is probably true.
so, when are you going to get yours?

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 2:15 PM

Fine- Zopilote Machine is a classic. Sunset Tree is from the late decadent period..you know, where they used instruments and stuff?

Posted by david z | March 29, 2011 2:41 PM

better prepare and "tweak" that resume unless of course you live in williamsburg

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 2:41 PM

or unless you can make good hummus. they, the world is your oyster.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 2:47 PM

The new record sounds great, but the set was sort of underwhelming. Not terrible, but not up to the standard of his last four or five times in the city. I'm sure it'll flesh out as the material gets some play during the tour, but for now, it's a little rough.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 3:18 PM

This was the first time I've seen them live, and was thoroughly impressed. Fun, comfortable show. And the Megafaun guys were just great.

Posted by Evan | March 29, 2011 3:28 PM

one of the best mtn goats shows ever.

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 4:24 PM

Craig Finn is joining the band

Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2011 4:46 PM
