Wild Flag

"For Sleater-Kinney superfans, Wild Flag sounds like a bluesier, more psychedelic endeavor: the songs are rooted in pop and punk structures, but are warped and spaced out at times, with distorted riffs that meander and melt their way through patches of loud improvisation. Though the four all share vocal harmonies, with Timony frequently taking lead guitar and vocals, Brownstein is the clear bandleader, hunching over her guitar and burning through bluesy solos, which, at times [in Boston], brought her whole body to the floor." [Boston Phoenix]
Wild Flag played the first of two shows with Bright Eyes and Superchunk at Radio City Music Hall last night (3/8). They do it again with the same lineup tonight (3/9).

Wild Flag played their second of two shows at Rock Shop on 3/5, just a few hours after delivering their first blistering set that photogapher Amanda Hatfield described as "SO GOOD. Damn." Jessica Amaya took the reins thereafter. Her pictures from the late Brooklyn show, which also featured support from Yellow Fever, are in this post. They include a shot of the setlist which omits the two-song encore - a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden" and a cover of Patti Smith's "Ask The Angel". Videos of both of those songs and more pictures from the late show at Rock Shop are below (Radio City pictures are coming later)...

Finally a group of female musicians to make women proud instead of the image obsessed Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast and Vivian Girls garbage we've been forced to deal with.

YES

awesome photos jessica!

They played first. About half an hour, starting a little after 8. They were great, though most of the crowd couldn't stand them. Unfortunate.

Wild Flag is the best band I've seen in a while. Loud, energetic and fun - they keep it simple, and the results speak for themselves. Can't wait for them to come back to town!

this band sucks

Posted by ernie | March 9, 2011 2:01 PM

I havent listened to this band yet and I am already a fan. Why? BECAUSE THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT. Bruise Cruise Dipshits need not apply. Take your trust funds and go back where ya come from and take a few lessons on the way out - namely this one. Combine these folks with Superchunk and BAM! THAT's a bill. Who needs Bright Eyes? We know who Bright Eyes needs - these bands (No hate on Bright Eyes just saying facts).

Yes, but are they going to release and material?

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 2:04 PM

Funny how recent "indie" rock has been mostly a bunch of wussy guys dancing around to lo-fi or electronic beats (Vampire Weekend, Wild Nothing, Wavves) and then a group of girls like this comes along with more balls than they'll ever have. Hairy pussies showing the boys how its done.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 2:13 PM

it's 'ask the angels.' plural.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 2:14 PM

2:13, disgusting though true

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 2:23 PM

This band sounds good but I just want a Sleater-Kinney reunion.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 2:26 PM

2:13, that's true, but there is another side to the coin. If this was a band of all dudes they may not be noticed at all and dubbed just another band regurgitating classic rock. I'll wait a while, at least for an album, to make a judgement call on Wild Flag.

Good point, 2:38pm. Might I add that if Vampire Weekend, Wavves and Wild Nothing were a band of all women, they may not be noticed at all and dubbed just another band regurgitating cutesy twee, girl group and synth pop?

2:04-yes, full length due out in August on Merge I think

Posted by donn | March 9, 2011 3:08 PM

3:08, yes you may add that. It actually makes perfect sense. The bottom line here is content, not necessarily who is presenting it.

love these girls

Thanks 3:08, great news.

Bright Eyes, 9:45/10ish

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 6:59 PM

What time did Bright Eyes finish?

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 7:11 PM

After he did the last song.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 7:16 PM

Thanks. Just wanted to make sure he didn't leave early.

Posted by Anonymous | March 9, 2011 7:20 PM

I don't know when he left but he definitely was done after the last song.

Oh! That's who took a picture of the setlist I grabbed. I should have known. But anyway...stellar show on Saturday. I can't wait for them to come back to New York.
