"If you'd told us in 2002 that we'd be headlining Coachella w/ Animal Collective playing before us I would have told you, you were full of shit" - Win Butler

Arcade fire
Arcade fire

Arcade Fire headlined the main Coachella Stage Saturday night (their third and biggest time playing the annual California fest), and as if their sound and crowd size and setlist wasn't impressive and massive enough, a surprise came during "Wake Up," their last pre-encore song. Courtesy of Creators Project, who promised something big via a press release earlier in the day, lots of white balloons descended upon the crowd. But they weren't just any balloons. Honestly I don't know how they worked, but they lit up and changed colors as you can see in the pictures above above and below. And they stayed lit up during the four-song encore that helped close out the second of three hot days of Coachella 2011.

More pictures from their set (more coming from David later too), and some videos and Arcade Fire's full setlist, below...

Thank you SO much for posting up those pictures - I would have dearly fucking loved to have been bouncing around with all those balloons

I look forward to the videos :-)))

Was able to nav a balloon, Jesus that pit was fun. Real story is AnCo's giant 'fuck-you' of a set of more than 1/2 new songs.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 5:27 AM

Those balloons were made to mimick the shape of chickpeas.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 5:38 AM

fuck animal collective. people went to the festival to have fun to have images of cum projected for an hour while the boring drones. they had the deadest crowd i've seen on the main stage so far.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 6:32 AM

AC should have never been allowed on that stage in that time slot. The worst.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 8:25 AM

Brooklyn Vegan went to Coachella. And all I got was this video of light up balloons.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 8:47 AM

8:25, AC should never be allowed on any stage in any time slot. The worst.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 9:38 AM

AC sucks at festivals-their music just doesn't translate well there.

Not much better at smaller venues, come to think of it...

i want to kill myself for not being there. but I saw them at msg so its kind of ok

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 10:20 AM

white people are so stupid

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 10:25 AM

GREAT show last night. This band brings it every time they hit the stage.

Posted by Tremags | April 17, 2011 10:48 AM

balloons are so 2010.

Posted by d | April 17, 2011 11:07 AM

AC wasn't really a fuck you. They played that kind of set their past few shows. Also if you saw them in festivals in mid 08 they did the same thing and played mpp with fireworks and comfy in nautica. If you didn't like what they did then you don't like them because that's the kind of shit they do.

I still think it's so weird that Jason Voorhees started an indie-rock band after killing all those people.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 12:01 PM

Balloons: Flaming Lips, Coldplay. Two years ago. Please stop with the balloons.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 12:02 PM

Anyone has the link to the stream?

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 12:30 PM

yacht is the new LCD

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 12:35 PM

ok i just finished watching the encore performance from last night. that was pretty cool. and this is coming from a person who gave up on arcade fire back in 2007

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 1:10 PM

guys AC just sucks, this ain't no new mystery.... it's almost as if they try extra hard just to be that terrible and make the crowd feel like a bunch of tools for giving them money... They're prob just a social experiment by banksy anyway

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 1:33 PM

hope Animal Collective makes the jump to Radio City soon.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 2:21 PM

I watched some of this last performance last night, guess what foolz?!- I DON'T LIKE Arcade fire!!!!...
I hope you all shut up about this band really soon.
and they don't rock at all...but whatever gets you off. If this is rock I've got a rock for your lipz, come here.

Posted by F. U. | April 17, 2011 2:54 PM

LCD did the whole balloons thing to death. Enough already. Drop molten lava on that audience. It would be more original. And also all those California half-wits would exclaim "the hot lava burning my skin off during Sprawl Part 2 was really cathartic."

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 2:58 PM

i love AC and loathe most of you on principal.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 3:02 PM

arcade fire=the slipknot of indie rock

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 3:05 PM

so AC sucks for trying to make innovative, artistically rewarding music instead of god-awful corporate college-rock like arcade fire? every song is like, the same four chords played over and over and over again

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 3:22 PM

repetition is a good thing.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 4:06 PM

"Balloons are so done blah blah" people, you're missing the point dramatically. Go check out the videos on Youtube to see them in action, the still shots don't tell the whole story. They're not "balloons" - they're dispersed IR controlled light sources, synced to each other and key points in the setlist. The effect is of a huge rippling horizontal lightshow and it's amazing.

This guy has dissected one:

Tyler the Creator just called everyone who likes the Arcade Fire a faggot

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 6:14 PM

the appeal of this band boggles my mind. oh well, there's people out there listening to worse but still.....will never get this band ever. i'm blessed :)

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 6:40 PM

Look at that pic of Sara Neufield and tell me your mind's not in the gutter

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 7:04 PM

@7:04 I most certainly will not sir.

@6:14 When Tyler's old enough to wear big boy pants he'll know better.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 7:14 PM

anyone knows how did these things work? led?

Posted by ru | April 17, 2011 7:48 PM

@7:48 The link posted @5:41 has pictures of one that's been taken apart.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 8:18 PM

Foals should have headlined

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 9:06 PM

Bands in sophomore slumps don't headline

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 9:12 PM

"hope Animal Collective makes the jump to Radio City soon.
