Batillus
Batillus

Let it be known, Batillus was officially the heaviest band in Brooklyn on Saturday night (4/23). The band's earth-shaking volume forced a premature ending to their record release set at Union Pool due to a "neighbor's noise complaint". It was fun while it lasted (they finished most of their set) and, once again, a guest appearance from the always incredible Kat (Agoraphobic Nosebleed, ex-Salome) was a welcome/unholy addition. I've said before that Batillus is a band that improves with every outing, and I thought Saturday night was their crowning achievement.

Co-headlining were the always malicious Morne, whose crusty prog-sludge set of over an hour was fantastic. The band played material from their forthcoming LP Asylum. Their set was amazing, and definitely topped their last NYC performance at Studio B with Tragedy.

Belus, featuring members of the once-great Curandera, opened the show and were an excellent way to set off the night.

Saturday was a disappointment and a huge triumph in equal measure, but that just makes room for an exciting set at Batillus's next appearance, May 14th at Acheron as part of a one-year-anniversary celebration of the venue with Trenchgrinder (pretty much Atakke sans Chloe and avec a new vocalist), Mutant Supremacy, Mortals, Defeatist, Tournament, Bad Dream & Beer & Cable.

these guys work hard, but damn they're zzzz as fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:01 PM

Hey look, one of the Matrix bad guys formed a metal band

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:07 PM

Dude, Johnny Winter became such a dick after he got dreads. No one gives a shit, Johnny

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:10 PM

What's with the hate? Batillus was awesome.

Posted by S | April 25, 2011 3:15 PM

^Yes they were. One of the best shows I've seen this year. Too bad about the cops shutting it down.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:20 PM

Batillus would be awesome if Graves at Sea didn't do that first.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:57 PM

They don't sound like they're ripping of graves at sea. They're music is definitely original.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:11 PM

Batillus...Brooklyn's finest metal band? Could be.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:29 PM

Fatass!

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:33 PM

Batillus was awesome! Not sure who is doing the shallow shit talking. Go back and listen to Liturgy whoevers talkin crap.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 6:22 PM

hit the nail on the head, 3:01

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 11:12 PM

Shit talking on the internet has gotten totally out of control. If you're not into the band, just don't post. Simple as that.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 11:51 PM

They certainly look loud.

Posted by Radiators | April 26, 2011 4:44 AM

11:51 - yes, that would be a very interesting read. "Hey, you're great!" "Yes, yes you are" "I also think that you are great" "I, too, concur."

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 8:25 AM

I don't think shit talking makes for an interesting read at all. It's annoying.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 9:37 AM

^ It's entertaining when it's clever (that excludes all the hummus jokes and all the other BV cliches). But the standard elementary school name calling is just downright retarded.

It would be nice to see more encouragement and positivity in the comments here, but also I'd like a little more than "Hey, you're great!" "Yes, yes you are" "I also think that you are great" "I, too, concur."

I think it's shitty that anyone would consider putting people down as entertaining. These bands work very hard, and I think many folks are just jealous that their band isn't as successful.

FUCKING BELUS OWNS

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 1:19 PM

I like many different genre's of music but the indie metal thing which has morphed into basically just metal appropriating elements of "noise" or what someone deems experimental, has become too predictable and thats too bad because this whole little scene also is more concerned with image.

I mean come on people the sound and look (why is their a look?) is identical to all the other bands that play together who are almost clones. And you can always expect to see a posturing band picture on their albums etc. unlike the non metal bands they list as influences.

A good example of a band who is not this way would be maybe Dysrhythmia.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 3:41 PM

Excuse my grammar mistake.

Why is there a look.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 3:44 PM

I disagree. I don't see how this band is concerned with image. You're going to have to be more specific.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 6:16 PM

3:41 were you at the show? because it's pretty clear you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 8:30 PM

Ive seen Batillus before and it didnt seem like anything terribly new. Lots of low end E D chords.
Guttural black metal vocals. Fine for them, its just the hype is completely absurd.

Are you for real 8:30 PM ? because growling as some Giger character, constant hair forward and backwards, with doom chord stops and starts is not ground breaking.

Im glad Broadrick with Godflesh and Jesu has remained less about persona concentrating on music. Old Godflesh was for the wall of sound where as the band was rarely pictured in albums.

As he said not long ago about Jesu:
"he has been intentionally writing what he considers to be coherent and structured pop songs". Justin said he didnt want to fall into any of the numerous categories pushed on them like drone doom.

"A good example of a band who is not this way would be maybe Dysrhythmia."

Right on. Always cool to see this band being given props.

Posted by Anonymous | April 27, 2011 9:50 AM

@2:40 & 3:41: The only member of that band who looks alternative is the vocalist, and when did it become unacceptable in the metal scene for people to dress that way? So he has dreads and piercings, etc...so what? Would you like him better if he looked like he jumped out of a J. Crew catalogue? Would you like him better if he stood still while he sang, and didn't rock out at all? If so, I think you're the one that needs to look inward and examine what that says about you. He's a great vocalist and has awesome stage presence, and it doesn't have anything to do with how he looks.

Posted by Anonymous | April 27, 2011 6:32 PM

It seems very obvious the Ministry via safe crust punk image thing is what draws attention to them.
Otherwise its pretty clear they wouldnt receive that much publicity.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2011 3:28 AM

They're music is awesome and that's what draw people in. If they were another shitty band, you think folks would pay attention because their singer looks alternative?

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2011 9:52 AM

I'm not sure why folks are so obsessed with his appearance. Maybe because he' a tall good looking dude? Because there are a ton of folks who have a similar style.

Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2011 9:55 AM

I'm not sure why folks are so obsessed with his appearance.....

Isnt he obsessed with his appearance.

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2011 4:38 AM

I'm sorry, he's obsessed because he has dreads, piercings, and tattoos? Is that not normal for the metal scene. Jealous.

Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2011 3:23 PM

Speaking of obsession... Does anybody else here feel weird if they don't eat hummus on a daily basis?

Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2011 5:29 PM

Love the slow shutter speed shots ...lots of action on stills
