Escape to NY

"As the 2011 North American music festival season kicks into high gear during the next several months, U.K. fest organizer Fred Fellowes will test the New York market with a three-day lifestyle event in August modeled after his Secret Garden Party in England.

The inaugural Escape to New York festival will be held Aug. 5-7 on the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton, N.Y. The initial lineup includes Best Coast, White Rabbits and the Vaccines, and a full list of performers will be announced in the coming weeks, a representative says.

"We're not coming out guns blazing with a huge mega-list of an event, by any means," says Fellowes, whose summertime Secret Garden Party annually draws about 30,000 people to Grange Farm in Cambridgeshire. Founded in 2003, the event has featured such acts as Phoenix, Florence & the Machine and the xx. "We are trying to start with a modest grass-roots type of approach with about 5,000 people and slowly grow it from there," Fellowes adds.

The idea to stage an event on an Indian reservation was spurred by a chance encounter Fellowes had five years ago at Austin's South by Southwest with entrepreneur Rocco Gardner, who had ties with the Shinnecock tribe." [Billboard]
Tickets are already on sale. Watch a video teaser below...

Ugh. Route 27 is already crowded as fuck during that time of year. I can only imagine what this will bring.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 2:40 PM

the vaccines are an abomination. you might even call them a plague!

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 2:45 PM

Nothing like sending a band called The Vaccines to a reservation.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 2:49 PM

just like APW, this will fail!

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 2:52 PM

i'm gonna escape FROM new york during this!

hey-ooooooooooooo!

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 2:52 PM

UMM, WHERE'S THE LINE UP?

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 2:56 PM

I don't even get it! This is tumbleweeds!

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 2:56 PM

We're not coming out guns blazing with a huge mega-list of an event, by any means,"

Well, keep booking shitty ass acts like this and you certainly wont have much to worry about.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 2:56 PM

2:56....that is exactly what I was thinking. It's like, "this fest isn't going to be anything special and it might even disappoint those who attend." WTF?!?!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:03 PM

This is like ATP for truly awful people.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:06 PM

This festival will still sell out and be crowded. It is being held in Long Island, and as we all know, the inhabitants of that wretched stretch of land are brainless. The crowd will be 85% locals so expect to see lots if girls in white sweat pants thinking they are really edgy at their local "rock and roll" festival.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:10 PM

i like turtles.

Posted by jonathan | April 25, 2011 3:11 PM

oh shit best coast!! maybe wavves will play too?? in 3d??

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:14 PM

Instead of 1 actual good festival we get a ton of half-assed little "fests" and bullshit free shows that no one cares about.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:15 PM

I am actually suprise this is a go. Everytime they have tried to hold a festival out there in the past, the town has nixed it in the end. There was supposed to a be a Bonnaroo, New York a few years ago which had started advertising and then got pulled at the last minute. I think Field Day was supposed to be out there also.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:26 PM

Remember when there used to be a counter-culture?

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:28 PM

Field Day was supposed to be out there, got nixed at the last minute. Bummer that this area can't support a big festival, but it seems like it can't...

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:29 PM

Field Day would've RULED!!! That initial lineup was unreal before it got condensed...still a great show anyway! Does anyone have a link to the original 3-day lineup?

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:34 PM

Field Day promised a laundry list of household names including Radiohead, Beck, the Beastie Boys, Sigur Ros, Elliot Smith, Interpol and Blur.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:42 PM

It rained all over Field Day.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 3:49 PM

310 is still mad that his falloutboy tickets at the downtown never got refunded

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:03 PM

This looks more like a TBS advertisement than a music festival. WTF.

Posted by The Real Real Yup. PERIOD | April 25, 2011 4:04 PM

3:10, wow, chill out.

Also agreed in that description is the epitome of confusing marketing. "This will be a sub-par festival, there won't be any bands you like playing it, but still it is something you should come out to." I don't get it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:07 PM

I love girls in white sweat pants.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:10 PM

all of those bands were there except for Sigur Ros and maybe interpol (i don't remember seeing them that day). Beck Broke is leg or something walking onto the stage but never played.

This must be a camping festival, right?

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:11 PM

i am surprised that the shinnecocks are tolerating this nonsense

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:12 PM

This festival is such bullshit and the organizers are trying to pull a fast one.
They claim on seetickets that the super early bird 150.00 and early bird 200.00 tix are sold out. Only thing left is the most expensive 275.00 tickets

Right. Sure. Even Bowery Presents would not try that kind of lie.

Who in their right mind believes that they sold out a mess of early tickets based on Best Coast, White Rabbits and Vaccines? Unless of course they sold a total of 2 tickets at each of those prices.

Give me a fucking break.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 4:33 PM

^FUCKING WORD. If I'm paying that kind of money I expect the festival to be a line up in par with one of the well known fests like Coachella,Bonnaroo, etc. Not fuckin Best Coast and The Vaccines

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 5:07 PM

If this is the inaugural year, meaning 1st time for this fest, where'd all the video footage come from to make that teaser?

I dig Best Coast but to be headlining a festival?... and in Southampton, Long Island?... HELL NO... sorry, my summer concert budget won't allow $10 bottles of water and $15 plates of hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 5:16 PM

So much whiteness... can't... breathe.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2011 10:30 PM

I totally agree with Anonymous 3:15.

The press release says: "We're not coming out guns blazing with a huge mega-list of an event, by any means,"...Ok, so just don't do it.

Or you make a proper festival or just don't bother. APW was a clumsy half baked festival. This looks to be a lot worse. Some people say In NY a Festivals won't work 'cos the bands already plays here all the time. Well, maybe, but I would have to see that first really don't believe a Coachella here would be a failure, people forget that this festivals you have people from all over the world, I mean, I have some friends in Brazil went to Coachella

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 3:07 AM

Oh yea? Well, my friends travel from the west village to meet me at mamouns on St Marks.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 5:19 AM

Field Day also had Liz Phair, My Morning Jacket, Ours,Underworld and Beth Orton

3:07,

I think it's really finding an ample space for a big festival that's the problem. I always thought Randalls Island would work well even though it's a dump. AEG/Goldenvoice made traveling to All Points West a real hassle with the mandatory parking passes, taking the ferry, etc. I don't it had too much to do with the lineup persay as Tool, Radiohead, Coldplay and Jay-Z can all fill arenas (which a festival headliner should typically be able to do).

I think if a promoter started a 2-day festival on Randalls or Governors Island and you could get, say, Arcade Fire headlining one night and someone like a Muse or that stature on the other night, tickets would sell.

Flame away...

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 1:27 PM

Accomodations are going to cost and arm and a leg: Tents starts at $1900. With tickets, a tent for four costs $3600 for the two day weekend.
Is there really a market for this?

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2011 10:04 PM

looks like Burning Man plus Wayfarers

"On Sunday, August 7th, there will be the world’s largest brunch with over 1000 people eating to set a world’s record. Please join us and be a part of history."

Posted this on the other wall too (talent lineup - http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2011/05/southampton_fes.html).

Quite surprised by how negative everyone's being - maybe some are upset they didn't go find the $2m you'd need to raise for this kind of event / have the balls to risk trying to stage something like this themselves.... I think its going to be amazing and good on them.

"... who are all you to say they'll make big money - do you have any idea on the numbers of how a festival works - they're probably losing money in year 1 I'm sure - the guys behind this put on one of the best independent festivals in the UK - THE SECRET GARDEN PARTY - google it and figure it out.... if you have so many opinions, why don't you write on their facebook page and suggest what you want - THEY DO INVITE YOU TO MAKE SUBMISSIONS - when will everyone get off being so negative. I think this will be great and can't wait to see it in our neighbourhood" - TJ

" I always thought Randalls Island would work well even though it's a dump."

Randalls Island had many festivals, and besides a bit of traffic (really nothing that bad) leaving, it works really good as a location.

Lollapalooza, Warped Tour, Horde Tour, Lilith Fair, Fleadh all played Randalls Island. Great space. Why is it not used more?

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2011 1:23 PM

"Posted this on the other wall too"

Wall? This ain't Facebook dumbass.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2011 1:48 PM

@1:48 - maybe should have put Board - aren't you charming Mr Anonymous

Posted by Tom Jagger | May 12, 2011 2:50 PM

In regards to the Shinnecocks tolerating this ? What a joke. It's exploitation from the Brits trying to make themselves look 'cool and earthy' by having this on a 'Rez' get to grips with yourselves people.
It WILL FAIL I agree.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2011 6:53 PM

I really do understand the negativity. There has been attempts to create really out there festivals around here before that have failed. That was something else and maybe we should all give it a chance.

Secret Garden Party is one of the best festivals in the world, not because of the acts they booked, but because of the interaction between the festival goers. I made life long friends at that festival each year I went and loved every minute of it.

No one can tell exactly how a new festival will do, but trust me if its by the same people then their heart is definitely in the right place and they will do everything in their power to make it a spectacular weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2011 11:14 PM

"We're not coming out guns blazing with a huge mega-list of an event, by any means," says Fellowes

The reason for this is no one else would want to perform. Patti Smith is an old has been but was very cool back in the day. Try a little harder!

and yeah the tickets are not sold out by any means as mentioned on seetickets.com FAR FROM IT.
