LCD Soundsystem

They played for over 3.5 hours before the sun set on LCD Soundsystem in a cascade of white balloons dropping from the Madison Square Garden ceiling in NYC Saturday night. I wished they played even longer. Everyone I talked to agreed.

But James Murphy and co. gave everything at Madison Square Garden last night (4/2). And the sold-out arena crowd gave in return. For two months - through the initial on-line ticket debacle, the addition of four T5 shows to make up for it, constant hype, and lots of guessing at what guests might turn up (sadly there was no Daft Punk) - it all made this final act in the drama, The Long Goodbye, even more of an event.

People camped on line several hours early to get a coveted spot up front on the floor and most of the crowd adhered to the black and white dress code. Those who didn't stuck out.

From where I was in the middle of the front GA section nobody stopped dancing, or singing along or smiling the entire night. (Save for, like at all four Terminal 5 shows, the couple of awkward, yet brief and deserved intermissions.) Every turn to scan the Garden saw people full-on, in the groove dancing; not just some barely-registered shuffling back and forth. Honestly, everyone who was there should take a bow because they were fantastic. During the first break, video footage was shown of an interviewer talking to fans outside the venue, Aziz Ansari included.

LCD Soundsystem

And no, there was no Daft Punk, but there was Arcade Fire singing joyously along on "North American Scum" (the third set's highlight) and an appearance by Reggie Watts who also played with the band at three of the four Terminal 5 shows. The boys choir featuring members of Mr. Dream was there, as were the two female backup singers, and the horn section that included Kelly Pratt and Colin Stetson. Original LCD guitarist Phil Mossman was back and featured a few times in addition to LCD band members
Nancy Whang, Tyler Pope, Pat Mahoney, Matt Thornley, Gavin Russom, and David Scott Stone. Liquid Liquid opened the show like they did at the first two Terminal 5 shows. Shit Robot, who opened the second two T5 shows, again made an appearance during the show. Shit Robot and Juan Maclean, for one song, were alien vocalists in mysterious cardboard-looking spaceships that were set up in seats behind the stage (pictures and video below).

Pitchfork streamed the whole show for those who couldn't be there - you could see the cameras all over the place, including on the shoulders of cameramen walking through the GA crowd. Filmmaker Lance Bangs was seen dancing in the crowd and working backstage on the video of the show, and yes the clouds made it to the two screens that were hanging on the sides of the stage.

LCD started with "Dance Yrself Clean" and "Drunk Girls" followed. The first set was breathtaking and included "Daft Punk is Playing in My House." After an intermission, the band tackled most of 45:33. Watts came out for "Part 2" and Murphy spent most of the middle set off in the background letting the band tackle the instrumentals.

The first encore featured a cathartic and riveting "Someone Great" as well as "Losing My Edge" and "Home." For me that block was the highlight. During "Losing My Edge," the video screens featured images of some of the influential bands mentioned. When I looked up I saw The Sonics.

Their Harry Nilsson cover of "Jump Into The Fire" was part of the final 3-song encore. Murphy, his voice sounding a bit hoarse, paused between songs to thank everyone who came out and everyone who helped put the show together. "Three songs left," "two songs left," and then after saying "this is our last song", and a bit more banter including an admission to his family who was in the audience that he was wearing his dad's watch (as you can hear in the video below), he led the band into their final (ever) number, "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down." It started slow with Murphy even laughing and pausing 'for dramatic effect' but by the end of the raucous outro the crowd was in a frenzy, only for the band to launch back in and cue the balloon drop. As the crowd was preoccupied with balloons of various size descending upon them, the entire band slipped off stage, almost completely unnoticed, and into history.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:15 PM

Some people in the pit said they bought GA tix for face at the MSG box office right before the show. The whole ticket thing must have been a colossal screwup or something.

Awesome work Dominick, this set is fantastic!!

Posted by Amanda | April 3, 2011 6:18 PM

I feel like there's no need to see other concerts again. That was so epic. Up against the rail and there's no other way the show could have happened!

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:19 PM

got 2 GA tix outside last night for 100 around 8:50 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:23 PM

It would be so nice if, having been given more than sufficient space to do so elsewhere, both the bored people who've felt their uberimportant lives have been inconvenienced by ongoing coverage of this run of shows and the boring people who are sure the world can't be allowed to proceed until it has basked in the glow of their tossed-off opinions could move on silently and let this space be for people who are thrilled by good things and sad that they must come to an end.

Posted by J | April 3, 2011 6:26 PM

great recap of the show and awesome pictures. THANKS!!!

Posted by Ryan | April 3, 2011 6:27 PM

the strokes definitely pissed there first and made it their territory

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:28 PM

what time do they go on tonight?

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:29 PM

6:17,

I got mine during the ticket drop on Monday. Pretty happy I didn't wait outsidse the Mercury Lounge box office in the cold.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:29 PM

Good riddance! I'm so fucking sick of this band. Now on to some real music. Phish at Watkins Glen for 3 nights, hell yes!

Posted by Cee | April 3, 2011 6:30 PM

3.5 hours? UGH

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:31 PM

great time last night. not as hot as the t5 shows, but a special way to close out a band.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:40 PM

Yep, it's all over.

Don't ya feel kinda dumb you thought it would be something, like, SPECIAL?

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:44 PM

I wish I had GA. I was on the floor, but all I could see were people in GA dancing. Fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:50 PM

Where does Frohawk go from here?

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:52 PM

whats frohawk's name? I NEED TO KNOW!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:53 PM

it was a special night. show was tremendous.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:53 PM

I went to every terminal 5 show and none of them came close to MSG. anyone who disagrees simply wasn't at the last show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:55 PM

Last night was so awesome, I dont think I want to see another show again. Ill wait for the LCD reunion.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 6:58 PM

I was there. It fucking killed. Goodnight, LCD.

Posted by wingwalker77 | April 3, 2011 7:00 PM

what a difference from the dreadful Terminal 5 shows. why cant they make that venue sound good?

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:02 PM

what would it take to get terminal 5 shut down?

i'll help this cause.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:03 PM

Hey, I'm in one of those photos! alright! Epic show

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:07 PM

So bottom line is, every LCD video that has been linked in the final performances really does a great job of capturing how shitty they are live.

So glad I don't live anywhere near where this absolute shit music scene is in a perpetual dwindling away stage.

One look at Frohawk is all the convincing anyone should need to stay far, far away from there. I bet you could get an NYC strand of gay herpes just by rubbing against his frohawk.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:09 PM

it looks like a awesome time for those who got GA tix. I had crap seats. The band didnt sound good from where I was sitting. they should make the whole floor GA.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:10 PM

pssst pssst... Frohawk has long blonde hair and loves Wild Nothing.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:13 PM

eagerly awaiting audio files. What a great great show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:14 PM

last night was a special night that will be remembered for ever. I consider all that attended my brothers and sisters. I would like to buy you all a drink!

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:16 PM

Those Frohawk photos made my evening. I got to talk to him for a while yesterday, he is one badass individual.

Also, I have not seen a show that was filled with so many HAPPY people in a very long time. Everyone in there was smiling throughout the entire show, I don't think anyone was standing with their arms crossed or acting jaded. So refreshing.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:23 PM

^ Amen to that! Everyone was happy. I saw frohawk buying a pretzel last night. He loves them pretzels!

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:26 PM

how did they go so far over curfew at MSG? Even if Prince went over, he would be fined. Wow

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:27 PM

i was in section 347, as far as you could get from the stage. the sound was perfect. the party was raging. the spaceship took the fk off. 10 times better than any other dance party i've ever witnessed.

Posted by andrew | April 3, 2011 7:28 PM

HE GETS ME HIGH

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:28 PM

They probably paid to go past curfew.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:29 PM

Bravo Dom. Great job of capturing the night for everyone that wasn't able to get into MSG. LCD put on a hell of a show and I look forward to James' next project. Dude deserves to sit on the beach for a few months and recharge.

The ticketing fiasco was an important step in Bowery Presents decent into Live Nation-ness. This was a money grab for them on a level that they'd never attempted before - the T5 shows and last night netted them a ton of cash. All they had to do was to sell all of the MSG tickets as will call only. Allow people to pick up the tickets from the box office 6 hours before doors. This wouldn't keep all of the tickets out of scalpers hands but at least it would make it more tough for them.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:30 PM

those breathers were cheeseburger breaks

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:31 PM

james was crying cuz the fat paychecks are over

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:37 PM

Was in GA but from what I could tell the whole place was poppin - mad props to all my groovin bleacher homies

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:42 PM

good for all you LCD fans. when you dig a band and you get to share in their farewell, it's pretty special.

one thing - a year from now, if I run into you at some party and you are still talking about this shit I'm gonna put such a hurt on you that you will wish you were at Brooklyn Bowl only getting a pussy beatdown. So, get it out now. Later, there will be no mercy.

There really should have been a camera on Nancy Whang all night. Mmmmmm....Nancy Whang.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:55 PM

amazing, aamazing show.....seen lcd numerous times, but there was something really special erupting on stage last night...al doyle was straight beasting out ....although the rcade fire appearance was cool....win butler's goofy smile made me feel uncomfortable and also made me come to the conclusion that hes total pussy....

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 7:56 PM

Made a couple grand off thses losers LOL!

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:05 PM

James giving Nancy a holding-hands consolation was one of the best moments of the night.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:06 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:07 PM

i thought nancy looked banging last night

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:11 PM

7:09...you really are a sad sap. So you are glad you don't live near the bad music scene...so you are in Tulsa I pressume? Enjoy your Toby Keith or whatever gets you off.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:15 PM

T5 on Tuesday was amazing, and somehow, MSG last night was even better. These shows will definitely hold me over until the inevitable LCD reunion tour.

I've seen David Byrne and David Bowie as 'surprise' guests with AF. I guess I've gone concert-full-circle now that I've seen AF as the surprise guest.

Posted by Dan | April 3, 2011 8:27 PM

@7:28pm - we were neighbors last night - i was in 346 - didn't matter where you were last night it was a dance party - never saw so many people dancing in the aisles up in those sections ever and no one was stopping them

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:30 PM

Buy-bye.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:35 PM

@8:30 - hey neighbor!

Posted by andrew | April 3, 2011 8:38 PM

What a great night that was. Everyone was actually dancing and having a good time...in New York!

Posted by Minus Manhattan | April 3, 2011 8:40 PM

Looked great on the interweb. Back to the future for LCD.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:46 PM

so what will BV blog about now that LCD is gone?

LCD Reunion shows! OMG. 18 nights at T5!

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:48 PM

Gotta be honest, I came here to make a snide remark, but watching that, damn they put on a show. Gotta tip the cap to one of the giants of my formative years bowing out.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:51 PM

MDMA roll call? It felt like this whole room was high.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 8:57 PM

nothing really against lcd, but lets be honest here. the 'reunion' will be in at least five years. its shrewd marketing.\

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:04 PM

ARCADE FIRE > WINNING

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:04 PM

Fucking frohawk is the man.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:12 PM

By some random luck, I was in the luxury suite dead center (right above section 347 - holla). Loved the open bar and food, but I wish I was dancing in the crowd.

The cool thing was I had a view of the entire arena. Everyone was dancing. It was insane.

Posted by Dan | April 3, 2011 9:20 PM

Wow, look all the marketing geniuses declaring the LCD reunion coming soon. James Murphy has already said 100 times he's too old to be doing this shit and that they get sad when they see bands like the Pixies playing reunion shows. If you know anything about that dude, you know he's serious about retiring the LCD thing. That doesn't mean he won't be DJing or doing some other project, but LCD is over - despite the snarky reunion insistence.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:23 PM

Frohawk crying during "All My Friends" was the highlight of my night. You can tell when it's special for someone, and it's special. Way to go, black dude.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:24 PM

@9:20 - holla!!!

Posted by andrew | April 3, 2011 9:32 PM

wow, freakin' great pictures thanks dominick. magical looking evening.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:33 PM

Glad I saw them back in 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2010.

They should have ended on extended version of Losing My Edge.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:38 PM

did anyone see the guy try to run onto the stage and jump into the pit?

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:58 PM

fuck LCD Soundsystem, a bunch of hipsters with synthesizers does not a band make

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 9:58 PM

douchefest

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 10:00 PM

i gave frohawk a slice of my pizza. it was the least i could do.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 10:05 PM

Everyone was so positive and happy last night. Strictly going by performance, I thought the MHOW/Webster Shows last year were better, but as far as energy, 20,000 people collectively had an insane time. This is particularly staggering considering that Dance Rock usually brings out the absolute worst of the bottom feeder douchebags. I have no idea how that room stayed so great, for so long last night. Stunning. It was nice to take a night off from snark.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 10:19 PM

The Arcade Frohawk

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 10:26 PM

hey, im in that picture with the guy in the frilly shirt.

and yes, GA was the tits. we got there for what we thought was late, and ended up basically third in line. i have never danced that hard in my life and rocked out. the night was only made better due to the fact that i threw aziz ansari in the air. win.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 10:29 PM

it's fucking over, at last. now everyone on both sides can mercifully shut the fuck up. time to buy some steely dan tix

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 10:33 PM

frohawk hates steely dan

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 10:37 PM

ok. If they had to pay for going over the curfew, that means all the employees and union workers got paid overtime for sure. Cut that into the gross profit of the show, also the large amount of performers on stage getting paid and then the run of shows at t5 makes alot of sense now relating to the overhead at the Garden.
Anyhow, thumbs up.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2011 10:38 PM

For those who want to know who Frohawk is, I found his twitter in a previous post from the shows on 3/30

You gotta help me. Okay? This girl I told you about? Diana? She's from the Five Towns. She's Jewish. She won't go out with me alone.
Can you believe this shit? She's fucking prejudiced, but she's built. She's never been out with an Italian before. She says she'll only go out on a double date with her girlfriend. You believe this shit?

Posted by Tommy | April 3, 2011 11:00 PM

It was revenge for Billy Batts, and a lot of other things. And there was nothing that we could do about it. Batts was a made man and Tommy wasn't. And we had to sit still and take it. It was among the Italians. It was real greaseball shit. They even shot Tommy in the face so his mother couldn't give him an open coffin at the funeral.

Posted by Henry | April 3, 2011 11:07 PM

"Was that Juan Maclean playing in the diamond ship along with Shit Robot?"

Yes it was

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 9:05 AM

Who is Jaun Maclean?

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 9:25 AM

I hope James and the rest of the band keep making great music and live happy healthy lives. So long and thanks for all the tunes!

Posted by Krimedog | April 4, 2011 9:41 AM

I agree with some of the other comments in this thread. The LCD show was on par with any (and every) Phish show at the Garden in terms of dancing and crowd enthusiasm.

Posted by Dan | April 4, 2011 9:47 AM

Alcohol sales being cut off ~10:30 pretty much ruined the entire show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 9:48 AM

charlie sheens a buzz kill

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 9:49 AM

^ agree 100%. and if they had just sold the beer in the PLASTIC bottles, instead of pouring them out into cups at the pace of a snail, perhaps the lines wouldn't have been so long. I damn near dropkicked two MSG employees when they told me "no more beer" after waiting in line for 20 minutes and missing a good portion of 45:33.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 9:50 AM

Bud lights for $9 pretty much ruined the entire show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 9:52 AM

it was cool they allowed smoking in the pit. I enjoy smoking cigarettes and watching bands. Call me simple, but it was awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 9:58 AM

i never saw frohawk dance so hard!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:03 AM

9:58..they didn't allow it they just didn't enforce it. It isn't allowed in any building in NYC

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:05 AM

i'm glad cigarettes are so awesome to you. they're totally not for everyone else. this is coming from a smoker.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:07 AM

very sad this monday morning

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:11 AM

I was in the pit. Alone. All of my friends were in te seats. Thank you sooo much for everyone in the pit who treated us like family. It's the most intimate crowd ive ever experienced, yet in one of the largest venues. A lot of us held hands during "ny I love you", yet it want corny or lame. For once, there was no elitism or snobiness. Everyone was one, and we all had a dance party. It was epic. Thank you all so much. Even the people dancing your asses in the 400 section, you were amazing

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:13 AM

twin peaks yo

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:15 AM

smoking in the pit ruled yo!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:22 AM

James Murphy paid for smoking in the pit. He loves his fans. Thank you James!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:25 AM

amazing show. all of the gushing above is well deserved. pit was awesome, everyone was extremely friendly, nice, pleasant. everyone was dancing (no arms crossed blah blah i'm so cool). everyone had the time of their lives.

sound was great in GA; lights were great. whenever they lit up the garden, if you turned around you could see EVERYONE going nuts in the stands - everyone enjoyed this show, the entirety of msg was a giant party. never thought you could get the latenight festival atmosphere at an msg show, but this was perfect (GA was not overcrowded, which really went a long way in making it a great experience)

i only caught one show at T5 (thursday) and while it was amazing, the msg show was far and away better (obviously, for one, it was no where near as packed or as hot). i was ready to defend t5 after the thursday show, because, well, it was awesome, but having seen pretty much the same show two days later, t5 is a terrible venue for a popular show - they must determine capacity based on filling up the upper levels, which never get full because no one wants to be up there unless you're right up against the rail, so the ground floor gets pretty unpleasant/overbearing. and this leads to the people being unpleasant to be around, whereas at msg everyone was everyone else's friend

i love the setlist they played, how it starts out all high energy/dance, then goes into the funky/chill second set and then the third set they go out on fan favorites and songs that stress how ROCK STAR this band is (although, to be honest, i think mossman was better on thursday)

james was very emotional on ny i love you, and it was clearly affecting everyone i saw in the pit. wonderful evening all around, lcd and the fans both brought "it", weather was warm enough not to bring a jacket, msg security was pretty chill (i only saw security toss two people, both unfortunately in spectacularly violent fashion)

to all the haters, whether real or not, i can assure you that not a single person was concerned with your opinion for even a second during that show, and nothing you say now will take away from how special everyone (everyone) felt leaving that venue

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:31 AM

someone farted in the pit as soon as Win Butler hit the stage. not even joking

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:34 AM

I consider all of you that were in the pit my brothers and sisters and wherever we see each other again, we will rejoice. It was a special night to be remembered for ever.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:39 AM

I smoked an e cigarette in the stands all night. I totally got away with it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:43 AM

the two girls sitting next to me got bounced from great seats early in the show for smoking cigarettes.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:46 AM

someone in the pit got bounced for farting during "north american scum"

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:50 AM

E Cigarettes > Winning

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 10:52 AM

That show was so awesome, I may never see another again.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:01 AM

MSG always cuts off beer sales early. Gotta plan ahead if you want to keep a buzz.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:02 AM

Call me crazy, but I was in section 234 (pretty far from the stage, almost dead center straight ahead) and the sound was f'ing MISERABLE. It needed to be at least twice as loud. I thought the light show was weak too.... Just thought it was going to be way more epic, but instead they had the same lights they always use (and they are built for small venues).

Anyway, had a blast, but was definitely disappointed with the sound and overall production. Still amazing though. Probably the closest energy you'll ever get to a Phish show, and that is no easy task!

Posted by The Dude | April 4, 2011 11:03 AM

tons of people were passing flasks around in the pit. it was awesome! how did they sneak flasks in? I want to know for upcoming events

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:06 AM

phish sucks yo. stop trying to ruin a good thread with the comparison.

i cant imagine the show being good for anyone that wasnt in the pit. the sound is always miserable anywhere else

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:09 AM

you gotta be close to get good sound at MSG. I was in section 5 on the floor and it sounded like the greatest thing i've ever heard.

MSG checks bags, but doesn't pat anyone down. Just slip a flask in yo pocket. voila

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:09 AM

11:09 was in Sec 74...sounded great and was a ton of fun!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:11 AM

I was one of those people passing around whiskey in the pit. My bag was barely checked. Just stuff it under something in your bag.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:11 AM

11:03 it was really really loud towards the front...

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:12 AM

"I consider all of you that were in the pit my brothers and sisters and wherever we see each other again, we will rejoice. It was a special night to be remembered for ever."

Hallelujah!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:19 AM

if you don't know how to get copious amounts of your own alcohol into msg, you're doing it wrong

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:26 AM

Stop whining about the sound at venues unless its Terminal 5. You got to see LCds last show. I'm jealous. Be happy bitches!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:31 AM

10:31, I was in the pit, too. I don't think anyone except the GA people really saw James get emotional. I think he prolonged the beginning of NY I love You to regain composure. I watched a few videos and it was hard to tell that he was getting choked up. Man, we all felt it :(

There were probably 5 "moshers" in the pit and people were getting annoyed, but fuck it. They were the friendliest guys ever and knew every word. I fucking loved them. I loved everyone hahahaha. God, I'm such a sap because of the love I felt.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:33 AM

first show I've ever ever been to, where not a SINGLE person left before the entire show was over. Awesome

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:34 AM

11:34 - glad to hear you were manning the door the whole night.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:49 AM

2 girls got thrown into the pit for smoking. It was epic!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:50 AM

"All My Freinds," "Tired," and "North American Scum" w/AF were highlights.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:57 AM

Couldn't get a cig smoked but no issues smoking joints. The world is finally starting to change in the right way.

Great show. Great crowd. Thanks LCD.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:58 AM

ah ya what photos are you all looking at? There are maybe 2-3 good shots here. The balloons falling is ok. But for all to rave about how they capture the "magic" WTF?

And the guy who took a balloon home, oh what a warm heart that person must have.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 11:58 AM

I'd replace the entire 2nd set (7 songs), and "Yeah" with "Never as Tired as When I'm Waking up," "On Repeat," "Yr. City's a Sucker," "Pow Pow," "Beat Connection," "Watch the Tapes," "Give it up," and "Great Release."

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:00 PM

those balloons were filled with nitrous. no one knew. what a waste...

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:02 PM

John Waters is in Liquid Liduid?

Posted by yup | April 4, 2011 12:08 PM

Liquid Liquid were better.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:22 PM

haa yeah 11:33, 10:31 here, he clearly choked back a few tears when he turned around and looked at the band and kind of shrugged; very emotional and still gets me thinking about it now; james murphy is a good d00d... and re: love, everyone felt it, we all shared that experience and it is great; carry that feeling with you as long as you can

12:00, i think the 2nd set was in part to let the band rest, but also in part to let the crowd rest... it was a long show and if they kept the energy as high throughout as it was during the first set, i probably would have died. plus, the second set was so much fun as far as dancing goes - i thought the drums were fantastic. first set i was just really happy and excited, second set i completely lost myself in the rhythm and then third set brought back the energy as you rocked out with a great band that truly seemed to be enjoying itself; bring on the emotional encore and it made for a night that i wouldn't change (i consider the third set as ending with "home" but i guess they did take a short break after "yeah")

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:24 PM

please stop talking about this show. I'm going crazy!!! they made 1 good album. who cares!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:27 PM

^ which one..they are all solid..

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:28 PM

The 1st album is the only good one. and STFU!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:29 PM

LCD clock has started.
You all have 3 more days to get it all out.
Use them wisely.
After that, severe beatdowns will rain down on anyone that ever mentions this stupid group again.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:37 PM

You guys are lucky. Strokes fans have no clock. They get beatdowns on sight.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:38 PM

You can all sit there and pretend you saw the last show. I'll be at the "surprise" Coachella performance in the DFA tent. That will be the real last show until the reunion.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:38 PM

"he real last show until the reunion"

you have no idea how hilarious and tragic this statement is

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 12:39 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 2:28 PM

video is gonzo.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 2:33 PM

people need to stop comparing this to Stop Making Sense.

LCDs show didn't give a shit about a visual component of the show. They were just playing with a budget light rig in a boxing arena.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 2:34 PM

I never thought much of Nancy Whang until this show. She is kind of hot.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 2:35 PM

Sweet no more BV LCD posts.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 3:04 PM

Wouldn't it be great if James announced the break up was a April Fools joke, and they continued onward? I bet they had that in mind, but those shitty strokes had to ruin it for us all. Now we have no LCD. It's all Julians fault.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 3:04 PM

it looks like the concert is no longer available on YouTube. Any idea of where else to look?

Posted by Half Chemical | April 4, 2011 3:04 PM

Fabulous night. So much positive energy.
Decent sound, except for Jame's vocals.
45:33 was a bit of a drag. Could have done much better with that "chunk."

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 3:09 PM

@304 the bluray will be available at hot topic this fail

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 3:12 PM

LCD's Final Show < The Last Waltz

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2011 3:42 PM

Frohawk for President. he made waiting in line since 1pm way more bearable and was so nice. In fact, I don't think I've ever waited in such a wicked line before with such brilliant people.

Came over from London for Thursday T5 and MSG gigs; thought Liquid Liquid were piss poor choice for support for the last ever gig - Shit (hot) Robot should have opened imho.

With regards to what James was throwing at the crowd towards the end of the night, it was indeed water as it was getting hot down on the barrier - Al doyle threw a bottle to my sister and I

James also started to lose it during Losing my Edge... loved him and Nancy holding hands right at the end. So poignant

I get the sarcasm though. :-)

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by hummus.

one more show! one more show!

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2011 8:03 AM

7:31..ok tough guy...keep telling your self you are tough....you are like one of those guys with a tricked out honda reving up at a light. Real tough!

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2011 8:10 AM

Hey 8:10 - I'm gonna see you at the Dino Jr. show trying to be detached and so cool. But you know what? You're not going to be too cool bleeding, as I leave T5 with the girl who won't remember your name. Ha ha ha > hipster looses his shit and gets a beatdown! "But, that's not cool! Yer a jerk!" I can't wait.

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2011 8:43 AM

8:10, i think, while equally cliche, a more apt description of 7:31's behavior would be some internet tough guy (7:31 almost certainly has a penis) posting from "his" parents' basement

however, since is this ny, and "he" IS posting at 7:31am, "he" could be one of those frat "boy" finance types... in which case "he" may even have ATTENDED the show (invariably drunk), but probably did not understand why everyone around "him" seemed to be having so much fun, and left feeling just as alienated and confused as when "he" first arrived. indeed, this would go a long way in explaining "his" anonymous internet disdain for those that enjoyed the show, as well as "his" choice of both "pussies" and "gay" as pejoratives.

so 8:10, should we really be condemning such a person? i told myself that i would try to carry with me that feeling of love which i was able to take away from this amazing show as long as i possibly could... instead of mocking 7:31, i believe we should try to be a little understanding, and try to let this person know that whomever he may be, regardless of whether anyone else would ever accept him as he is, at least on an anonymous internet message board, he need not feel alienated, ashamed, afraid. it is okay. it is not his fault. PLUR 7:31, PLUR

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2011 8:55 AM

^ok...8:10 here..fair enough summary

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 12:15 AM

the fans of this band are happy. that is a nice thing. those that are made unhappy by this , so much so that they must make public note of it, are unfortunate, and ultimately further away from any happiness they may seek. pity them or ignore them.

those that glory in some small personal point that is negative are what they are. don't let them matter. even they know they don't, that's why they spew.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 1:48 AM

Liquid Liquid sounded GREAT, couldn't believe it - they were better than T5 monday. Optimo was stuck in my head for days.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 7:40 AM

7:16, you are going to be a pretty lonely guy being the only one posting in July about a show that occurred in April. Good luck with that. And with your sorry excuse for a life. you must be a real hoot at parties ... oh, sorry, never mind.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 9:44 AM

No, I'm not gonna be able to make a LCD comment at 12:38!

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 11:51 AM

9:44 that arabic bot thing post on shows from several years ago!

Islam is a religion of peace.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 11:59 AM

The weirdest thing just happened. I had a vision of Frohawk, and he convinced me to stop hating LCD. He said "be excellent to my boy James Murphy, he's a'ight". the Fro was fighting back tears. I couldn't help it, my heart broke. I said "OK, Mr. Hawk. I will break the clock and consider LCD posts open season".

Peace and love, y'all. LCD FOREVAR!!!11!!~~~!!@@!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 12:33 PM

did I just see that?
what a pussy!

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 12:35 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 1:41 PM

^ it's chocolaty

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 1:48 PM

it has a hint of tabouleh as well

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 2:09 PM

Meh.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 2:13 PM

frohawk is actually friends/dating that comedian guy Aziz Ansari.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 5:09 PM

I think the frohawk meme has run it's course. It's becoming as stale as "meh" "7 1/2 inches" and "hummus".

Suplexes and pussy fights are still funny though

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 5:33 PM

Tom from Brooklyn Bowl > pussy slap > pussy fight > LCD

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 5:58 PM

what the hell is this person counting down to?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 8:51 PM

Are tickets still available for this?

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 9:26 PM

Frohawk kinda smells like poopyballs.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 9:45 PM

Just got official word that pretty much the entire band will perform with the Arcade Fire at Coachella. Obviously MSG was not "the end"

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 10:43 PM

Even if that was true (which it's not), I'm guessing most of the people who went to MSG on Saturday are fine with not traveling 3,000 miles to see them play in a desert in California.

Posted by Anonymous | April 7, 2011 11:38 PM

10:43 doesn't mean LCD stuff will be performed too..

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 7:14 AM

10:43 .... ROTF
and the folks who spent way too much for MSG tix come out to counter, disparage, and fist-shake.
I laugh.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 12:10 PM

I'm actually 10:43PM.

One of my best friends works for Goldenvoice, and he's been telling me the whole Coachella saga.

Apparently, James wanted to be in the top 2 on one of the nights, and have a dedicated DFA tent. This would be the second to last show and then MSG would follow a week later.

Goldenvoice kind of got sick of his demands, and basically told him he could be on the bill (not top 2 though) and the DFA acts could play/dj whatever they do in one of the tents, but not a dedicated tent. They would have to share and be spread out throughout the weekend.

James got pissed, and struck the deal with Hardfest about the DFA tent, and scheduled the MSG show a few weeks before so he could grab headlines and not be overshadowed by Coachella.

Now, he is looking for money to come play a few songs with the Arcade Fire. Looks like it's a for sure thing. Not sure if they will back the AF up, and have a bit midset to play LCD songs.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 12:27 PM

Does your friend have a frohawk?

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 2:08 PM

12:27 = Bullshit!

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 2:25 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 2:51 PM

^ Sorry I was doing my Scott the Engineer impersonation there.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 2:58 PM

SCCCOOOTTTTT!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 3:12 PM

I heard goldenvoice wanted a pussy fight tent and wanted DFA to battle Ed banger peeps

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 3:46 PM

So like, are LCD fans supposed to be slighted even in the unlikely event that James Murphy goes onstage during the Arcade Fire set and sings All My Friends or something? What fools everyone was to go to MSG and watch them play for 3 1/2 hours! Gimme a fucking break.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 5:20 PM

James Murphy will be appearing live at Coachella, all 3 days, in the food tent. He'll be the one in the corner with all the ketchup and mustard smears all over his face.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 5:23 PM

Meanwhile, here we are talking about LCD. That bro who warned everybody is going to have a lot of pussies to suplex.

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 5:33 PM

Fuck you @5:33. I will beat your skinny white ass with my thick purple penis!

Posted by Anonymous | April 8, 2011 7:21 PM

The Coachella thing is perfect if it gets Frohawk on a plane and out of this city for a few days.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 7:48 PM

Still sad :(

I love you James!

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 2:30 PM

Say what you want about Phish but at least they will sell the seats behind the stage. It's absurd that LCD left those seats empty, especially after the ticket fiasco. Seeing empty seats sucks the vibe and energy out of the place.

Posted by phishhead | April 13, 2011 8:08 PM

wow...people are still bitching...after all this time.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 8:07 AM

i was in the pit dancing the whole night, and it was easily one of the most overrated shows ever. people that think this was the best show ever need to get out more and see more shows

Hey, BV. Where are you with this news! Its another opportuinity for an LCD post! We need more!

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2011 12:00 PM

12:00,

I agree. I hope the bonus content features an interview with fro-hawk as well as footage of him crying against the rail.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15, 2011 4:59 PM

I heard Frohawk went to this concert for free. Such bullshit!

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2011 7:00 PM

Leave Frohawk alone. Guy is a stand up dude.

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2011 7:46 PM

Wow, new shows announced already. What an asshole James Murphy is. Who gives a crap that you wanted to do some festivals- you should have never announced MSG was your final show then!

Posted by Venkman | April 19, 2011 10:38 PM

Lcd was special...

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2011 11:29 PM

Frohawk and Nancy Whang were seeing getting romantic during the Arcade Fire set at Coachella. Could this mean a full scale LCD reunion is not far behind?

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2011 3:07 PM

Wow, Frohawk was also making out with 4 members of Odd Future on Friday. he really gets around

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2011 1:52 PM

Thanks for the great read. missed this show. I will be back to talk more.

Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2011 8:27 PM

Spin Doctors are way better than any of these half ass'd bands who essentially rip of Spin Doctors to begin with. Start with the original source material, Pocket Full of Kryptonite.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2011 10:42 AM

The hummus at MSG is so good.
