Lustmord

"Rumbles, thunderclaps and a baleful reading from the Old Testament prophet Amos -- "I will slay the last of them with my sword" -- opened the set by Lustmord on Sunday night at the Abrons Arts Center, the finale of the Unsound Festival of electronic and contemporary music and video. It was an extraordinarily rare live performance by the British musician Brian Williams, who has been recording as Lustmord since 1980 but has given only a handful of public concerts during his career, emerging for the Unsound Festival in Krakow, Poland, last year.

Lustmord has been a pioneer of what is generally called dark ambient music. It is textural rather than melodic, ultra-slow and submerged in bass and sub-bass frequencies, merging natural reverberations -- Lustmord has recorded in crypts -- with electronic ones. It opens abysses and lingers in them. When Lustmord got started it was associated with post-punk industrial music. Mr. Williams was a member in the 1980s of the Australian industrial group SPK and more recently has collaborated with the Melvins and Tool. While recording prolifically as Lustmord he has worked extensively as a sound designer in Hollywood, bringing ominous resonances to movie soundtracks."
[NY Times]

Lustmord played two Unsound Festival shows in a row, both presented by the Blackened Music Series, at the Abrons Arts Center in NYC on Sunday (4/10). Polish experimental musician Robert Piotrowicz and Void Ov Voices (aka Attila of Mayhem) also played both shows. More pictures from the late one (Lustmord's second USA show in 25 years), below...

He told me after the show that he became alarmed after accidentally clicking the "Express Mail Notification" about him having a package at his house in Boise. Since he was supposed to be dabbling in low frequencies here in NY, silly rabbit clicked the attachment and, well, you know the rest....

So, can we talk about that opener now?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 1:54 PM

Openers are overrated. Any selfrespecting drunkard knows how to open a beer bootle with wnother beer bottle.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 1:57 PM

Idiot hipsters (above commenrs) who only understand people monkeying around on the stage with their guitar, and boys singing like girls, girls singing like babies.

Just wait till someone you follow like sheep uses a laptop, then we will see what you say about laptop.

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 2:00 PM

do we really need more than one picture of the bald dude on the macbook filling in his netflix queue ?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:08 PM

Seriously? people pay for this?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:08 PM

At one point I did see him tap the space bar with a ring finger... It was kinda hip.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:10 PM

It is one thing to use a laptop but to use it as the centerpiece of a live show is a let down. Get live instruments inviolved!

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:11 PM

james blake uses a laptop. so does girl talk, i hear.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:11 PM

Where's the Lego Dominatrix?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:11 PM

At least Girl Talk has hipster chicks on stage dancing around his laptop.

Also lulz at how pretentious Atilla looks.

What percentage of the audience was there to look smart while secretly thinking about what porn site they're gonna jack it to when they get home?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:12 PM

The crowd went wild when he switched from using the trackpad to his USB mouse, I mean WILD. it was total pandemonium!

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:14 PM

Girl Talk at least has some emotion..not that he is any better...

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:14 PM

The facial expression lustmord is using shows he is in deep concentration... I have that face myself when I am blending chickpeas and staring into my blender.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:18 PM

Wow! All you posters have sure demonstrated your pathetic ignorance with embarrassing pride today. Do you all shop at Wal-Mart? Why is a laptop musician to be discredited? A person playing keyboards isn't condemned and they're doing the same thing- pushing keys/buttons on an electronic keyboard. Lustmord is an incredibly talented musician and I guarantee you that none of you can create the darkly majestic music that he does. The walls rattled, chairs buzzed and the walls nearly crumbled in the SOLD OUT theater.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:20 PM

so keyboard players sit down?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:22 PM

I hope the chair was one of those ergonomic ones that doesn't cause back problems.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:23 PM

so 2:20, was it BangBros or PornPros you chose to enjoy after the show?

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:25 PM

@2:20 some of us prefer actually feeling like we are seeing a performance. sitting at a computer expressionless (not to mention not even seen by the crowd) isn't exactly adding much value from a performance perspective. you can create darkly majestic music all you want in your bedroom. in my opinion, there's no difference between what he's doing on stage and what he's doing at home composing this very sort of music.

THERE'S NO PERFORMANCE VALUE YOU IDIOT

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:25 PM

2:20 turn up a speaker loud enough things will rumble..I don't have a problem with his music in concept but to just sit behind a computer is a little lazy...get some live orchestration..I mean the guy hasn't played live in decades..do it up!

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:26 PM

i guarantee the "SOLD OUT" crowd probably thought they were getting much more of a "performance" from a guy who supposedly hasn't performed in decades.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:28 PM

Well, I dig Lustmord but some of these comments were actually pretty funny (the ones that weren't trying too hard to be trendy).

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:28 PM

Agreed with 2:20. In fact, the Times article referenced above, states that it's actually because of the portability of laptops and new technology that has allowed Lustmord to recreate his music live much more feasibly than before.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:35 PM

THERE IS A PERFORMANCE VALUE, YOU IDIOT

IT IS THE SOUND THAT I AM THERE FOR, NOT THE HOT DUDES OR CHICKS

I WILL WATCH PORN IF THATS WHAT I WANT

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 2:40 PM

lazy? so using your brain to make music (programming software, etc... have you heard of max/msp, for example?) instead of shaking your butt is lazy? you really have to be clueless to say anything you are saying. i am sad for you. keep supporting music that's a rip off of music that's already been out there for the last 40 decades

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 2:44 PM

so 2:25, i am a pretty cute female and need neither of those, thanks. not everyone who likes something interesting is a dork or a guy

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 2:48 PM

If this was a guy playing dancy shake yer butt music, no one would complain about performance value. Face it, some people like incredibly dark brooding verging on the masochistically boring music.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:49 PM

The programming is not lazy but the live execution is...which is my point if you read it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:50 PM

2:44...phew thankfully I am a huge Motzart fan!

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:53 PM

oh is that so, 2:49? i find any music that involves a guitar extremely boring, soulless (unless a black person is involved in making of the music) and pathetic. the argument here however is about laptop. there are tons of people in the world -they tend not to be americans, ive learned that by now, thanks - who enjoy a great deal to hear music made with laptop and dont need a clown

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 2:53 PM

At least he's doing something productive with his computer, being creative. All you jackoffs are just talking about it on yours. Somebody name the band that you play in, that has a decent live show. Go ahead, give us a name...

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:54 PM

2:48 you may not be a guy, you may be a solid 7, but if you are defending Lustmord you are most certainly a dork.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:54 PM

2:54 - mind you, i said not a word about lustmord. i am talking about laptop music

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 2:56 PM

The least he could do is put a piece of tape over the blaring Apple logo. What a doofus.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 2:58 PM

-Gary Newman
-Kraftwerk
-Rush
-Lustmord

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:00 PM

2:53 I have no idea why you direct that at me. Yes, I made a dig at music that refuses to have a sense of rhythm to a near racist extent but by no means do I dismiss the laptop as a viable instrument. I'm saying people seem to think four to the floor = performance value.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:01 PM

3:00 - what are you ? in high school making fun of someone who i s not in your click? idiot. ive seen too many people like you in the last 13 years that ive lived in this country. how creative you are to respond to someone. ia m so ashamed and embarassed now. im crying booohooo

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 3:02 PM

2:50 i disagree. you would have to do it to know, may be. it is a different kind of performance.

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 3:05 PM

reading through these comments makes me miss the hummus guy, the AirBook guy, and Tom from Brooklyn Bowl.

I would rather read idiotic funny comments than a bunch of self important windbags blowing off in order to read their own word.

you all need to laugh a little - spring is here

@3:07, shut up you fucking hippie.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:10 PM

3:07 - i know, man, we need to chill out. listen to some cute tunes and enjoy the spring. we're too dark and self important. look how funny and AWESOME everyone else is, dude. talking about the value of something is unimportant

Posted by ssss | April 12, 2011 3:11 PM

What am I doing? I am laughing, senior.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:11 PM

Saw Lustmord at a piano bar after the show...letting all his steam vent, wilin' out on some honkytonk Leon Russell jam!

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:12 PM

Think about your laptop. You could press 17 buttons to mix music... or you could record that sequence and then push ONE button to play it back. You have no idea what Lustmord was doing up there. He was probably mixing some tracks. oooooh. awesome. anyone who disagrees - I'll be at the bowl tonight. bring your laptop and I'll smash it after I smash you.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:26 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:26 PM

Girl Talk is fun

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:29 PM

^ shame you're not.

Dear 3:24... Thanks for fixing my iPod yesterday. But please don't leave your bran flakes out, they might get stale.

Posted by Your roomate. | April 12, 2011 3:32 PM

Lustmord's performance value could have been greatly enhanced by a hewlett packard printer.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:47 PM

can anyone report if there was farting in the pit for this one? i would think that the uber low frequencies might induce some who might have had their cages rattled to react by passing a few SBDs (Silent But Deadlies)

thanks in advance!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 3:51 PM

this line kills me

i find any music that involves a guitar extremely boring, soulless (unless a black person is involved in making of the music) and pathetic

..wow... a bet you are a weird european white guy with dreads

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 4:00 PM

Pictures can't do Void Ov Voices' performance justice. Especially flash photography. Dude killed it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 4:06 PM

Asking questions about Girl Talk here shows how truly moronic most of you are. And, sorry if we don't all require that childhood, idol- like image of "a guy on stage with a guitar" to enjoy music.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 4:16 PM

4:16 yes, because one annonymous comment on a message board that requires no sign is a good meter for the average intellegence of a group of people.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 4:36 PM

"Dude killed it" - really, are we going to use that phrase when reffering to Atilla?
I'm sure that's what he was saying when he left stage.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 4:37 PM

No, the dude that killed 'it' actually goes by the name of "Count Grishnackh".

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 4:43 PM

@4:06- I didn't use a flash. ?? I agree that Void Ov Voices was excellent and should've gotten a bit more acknowledgement in the write ups/reviews.

Posted by greg C | April 12, 2011 5:06 PM

Who cares if he uses a laptop...just about every single person today in the business of performance artist from huge world dominating pop stars to dive bar bands use laptops. Are they always sitting on stage prominently?, No. This was probably the easiest, and most convenient way for Brian to recreate or improvise his performance...Someone above made a great point, that had he been playing some tricked out techno no one would have batted an eyelash...as another individual stated above, you are there to hear the music and experience the music [especially given Lustmord's attention to detail when it comes to the quality of the sound] not to stare at Lustmord, even the visuals are in a sense an after thought. If you thought you were going to get more than that you didn't know what you were buying tickets for to begin with. I would of liked it to of been a Windows machine though! :D

Posted by jeff swearengin | April 12, 2011 5:14 PM

Who knew that Lustmord was punk? He's got everyone's knickers in a knot over his use of a laptop in a performance. Do any of the haters actually have any knowledge of electronic music or do you just react and bitch? Laptop artists have been around for years and the computer IS an instrument. So he didn't dance and headbang, so f***ing what? The visuals and the out of body musical experience was what this show was about but that's probably way over your narrow minded little brains.

Posted by Anonymous | April 12, 2011 5:15 PM

2:53: oh is that so, 2:49? i find any music that involves a guitar extremely boring, soulless (unless a black person is involved in making of the music) and pathetic."

This entire thread is just absolute fucking comedy gold.

The resentment at his visually static performance - Protestant work ethic and Minesweeper nostalgia notwithstanding - stems from the fact that much of Lustmord's reputation as a live performer is built on crazy rumors of him hijacking the sound equipment of name acts in the UK in the '80s. He'd blast incredibly heavy and fucked-up levels of volume while his burly friends kept security from chasing him off the stage. Running time of said illicit Lustmord performance: about ten minutes. That was 30 years ago - and while no one expects the world's #1 SPK fan (and occasional babysitter) to do something quite as audacious, it's not unreasonable to expect something a little more visually riveting than "Journey to the Heart of Paint Drying with Brian Williams."

Anyway, he was probably just checking his FetLife account. The only "textural" portion of the evening was his finger on the F5 key. What was he supposed to do? Entertain you?

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | April 13, 2011 4:00 AM

Did the guy even have a microphone? Did he address the audience?

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 7:37 AM

jeff swearengin might be an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 9:53 AM

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2011 2:49 PM

i want more

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2011 3:01 PM

The best part about all this is... Lustmord doesn't give two shits about what any of you think. :) He's been around for early punk, early industrial, and even collaborated with Tool. He's also an active member of The Church of Satan so... yep. I'd say his accomplishments speak louder than a bunch of thread trolls.
