Liturgy at Death By Audio (more by Jesse Lindmar)
Liturgy

Loved by some and love-to-be-hated by others (but isn't that how the great ones are treated?), Brooklyn "trancendental black metal" crew Liturgy are preparing to release their new LP Aesthethica for new label Thrill Jockey on May 10th. Download a pair of tracks above. Stream them below.

The band is currently in Europe to play a string of dates that include Roadburn this weekend, but will return to the US to play a Record Release show at Knitting Factory on June 2nd. Tickets are on sale.

The show isn't the only upcoming Liturgy NYC date though, as they'll join White Ring & Terrence Hannum (Locrian) to play new bar/venue Saint Vitus (1120 Manhattan Avenue, Greenpoint) on May 6th.

"Finally, Greenpoint has a real fucking ROCK BAR!" declare the owners of Saint Vitus, the new 2,500 square foot bar, eatery and venue opening in Greenpoint next week. Owned by a group of guys who've been behind the bar at places like Bar Matchless, Lil Frankies and No. 7, Saint Vitus (named for a Black Sabbath song that is itself named for the nervous system disorder) was a social club, then a plumbing school in a past life...

"All three of us are musicians, so we designed this place to be a musician's dream," co-owner Justin Scurti tells us. "It's not too big, not too small, and we built it to our specifications for the best sound and stage set-up." Scurti says he plans to book everything from "good country music to black metal." -[Gothamist]

Scurti plays in Primitive Weapons, who will also play Saint Vitus on May 13th with Goes Cube, Descender and Iron Tides as part of a string of dates for Goes Cube.

In related news, Terrence Hannum of Locrian will be in NYC this weekend to play Europa tonight/Sunday (4/17) with Martial Canterel, Gnaw and Blacklist (tickets).

Locrian released one of my favorite LPs of 2010, and have released a new collaborative song with Horseback called "The Gift" which appears on a Utech sampler in celebration of the forthcoming Utech Festival on 6/11 in Milwaukee (where both bands will share a bill with Mamiffer, House of Low Culture, James Plotkin, and many other notables). "The Gift" will also appear on their forthcoming collaborative EP (!) New Dominions due on Utech. Locrian & Horseback also recently collaborated on a split 7" for Turgid Animal (disappearing fast!) and you can hear Horseback's contribution, "Oblivion Eaters" streaming below.

All tour dates, song streams, and a highly controversial video conducted with Liturgy is below.

Cool, a new venue for me to completely avoid

Just what Brooklyn needs... another venue/bar. Good grief.

THE BROOKLYN MUSIC SCENE IS TOO BIG TO FAIL!

Liturgy is a joke. Black metal? Where's Varg when you REALLY need him?

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 5:57 PM

Tyler the Creator just called everyone who goes to St Vitus a faggot

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 6:13 PM

Dude, this play on words you made up isn't worth framing a band around. Please dig a little deeper if you're going to keep writing music.

lame

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2011 6:18 PM

Damn, this guy really should not do interviews.

"like...like....like...like..."

Is it me or is this generations really fucked? Tyler?, Hunter?...I am naming my son Skyler now!

LITURGY = False

Those who don't think so = You Too Are False

Posted by HorrorHammerNYC | April 17, 2011 11:18 PM

This sounds pretty cool to me. I like new venues... But "Saint Vitus" is a lame name. They should have named it something cool like "Saint Hummus" or perhaps "Terminal Chickpea"

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2011 11:32 AM

Oh NOW i get it, they now offer black metal at at Berklee & New England Conservatory. Jolly good

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2011 11:40 AM

Liturgy is a good band. Are they pretentious people who are full of themselves? Yea, probably. But who cares. Really good music, and they are trying to take the framework of black metal and do something different with it! They didn't need to write a manifesto about it, that's a little much, but musically, i'm down with these guys!

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2011 11:56 AM

Musically, i think you're full of shit

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2011 12:00 PM

Phyiscally, I think you're full of baba ganoush

Transcendentally, you're all full of zombie jesus' cock! Liturgy go back to youth group. Christian Metal = Nazi Reggae.

Deafheaven > Liturgy

WOW

1. Not black metal
2. These kids (obviously) have absolutely no idea what they are doing
3. Maybe if they actually wrote songs instead of just "grinding ecstatically until it stops happening" they wouldn't suck so bad
4. How the fuck did these tools get Thrill Jockey to put out their record?

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2011 3:34 PM

Remember when record labels used to put together boy bands and market the shit out of them?! Cuz Thrill Jockey sucks ass. I.e. D Charles Speers ass (and it's mutton chops too).

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2011 6:09 PM

@ 3:34

WOW

5. Who cares what it's defined as. Liturgy rules
6. Stay off the internet

Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2011 7:39 PM

fuck liturgy. this band is weak.

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2011 9:06 AM

They sound really good. From the video I dont understand the whole "black metal"
label for them.

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2011 10:26 AM

Hanson black metal.

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2011 8:28 PM

someone thinks if you hit the snare really fast you're black metal. BBG knows better, so why... PR money?

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2011 8:42 PM

oh shit - i wrote the above comment before watching the interview. that was so embarrassing i had to stop it at 1:20. i take back the above comment and multiply it by ten.

London HATED these fools.

Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2011 2:19 PM

I think these dudes are either on coke or meth, not sure.

Regardless of what they say: corpse paint is awesome.

I have seen many black metal bands that put more thought into their corpse paint than this dude put into his "manifesto."

long, long ago - back in the day - way before WEB MD, an ailment called "saint vitus dance" referred to uncontrolled physical twitching motions ... similar to going through DTs.

Posted by daddy_dan | April 22, 2011 5:49 PM

8:45 & others -- I don't know guys, I'm not a huge black metal fan, and don't love this band's music, but I'm surprised at how quickly people get upset at someone being enthusiastic about their art and process. Based on the comments I thought I was going to see a complete driveling fool. But all I saw was a kid excited about the noise he and his mates are trying to make -- "likes"/"umms" aside -- and putting it in the context of music history & basic music theory in a reasonably intelligent way.

People are so scandalized by enthusiasm, it's really weird. Is everyone just sad that they're not making their own shit happen? Is that why you guys get yr panties so twisted over shit like this?

It is becoming increasingly popular this subgenre of music, even if some are still reluctant towards this option.

This is not black metal! To be sincere I don't like them...sorry.
