TVOTR @ MHOW (4/12)
TV On The Radio

"...the immediately captivating Nine Types of Light movie is now available to stream on YouTube and purchase via iTunes, the same day the brand new, and largely beloved album of the same name hits streets. TV on the Radio's approach to promoting this album - through not only words and music, but also by epically re-imagining the album visually - is a truly forward thinking moment brought to you by one of music's most groundbreaking acts.

The film includes a music video for every song on the album. The band personally asked their friends and the filmmakers they admired to help direct the music videos. Tunde Adebimpe, the director for the film, storybooked the music videos together with interviews from local New Yorkers on various topics, including dreams, love, fame and the future. Tunde also directed the music video for "Forgotten."..."
Watch the entire movie at the end of this post. The list of directors and tracklist is down there too.

TV on the Radio celebrated "Nine Types of Light" with a hometown show at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (4/12). Das Racist were the surprise opener. TV on the Radio step it up a notch with a headlining show at Radio City Music Hall tonight (4/13), before continuing on tour. Tickets for the big Manhattan show are still available (Light Asylum open). More pictures from last night, including the setlist, are below...

no golden age... HMPH

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 9:47 AM

damnit did they come out and do the 2nd encore of love dog and method?...could've sworn it was over.

sounded great but way too light on the cookie mountain and dear science tracks

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 9:55 AM

They didn't do that 2nd encore, actually-- they ended after "Satellite."

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 9:56 AM

Pau Gasol likes TVOTR???

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 9:57 AM

no way... really? not ending on Method is a total bummer. I hope setlist is better tonight

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 9:58 AM

I'm a big TVOTR fan and last night was BORING. Perfect example of a bad setlist ruining a good show. They didnt play a lot of classic tracks and the order/ flow of the setlist was weak...never got exciting.

If this is the setlist tonight they are gonna suck at RCMH.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:01 AM

agreed. was a horrible constructed setlist.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:05 AM

it's been awhile since i've seen an opening act bomb quite as spectacularly as das racist did last night. then again, could have been the lifeless crowd.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:08 AM

Didn't realize Mumford and Sons was the surprise post-show at the L stop.

Das Racist is redic and awesome.

tvotr was so great. wolf like me was super intense.

Posted by Adam | April 13, 2011 10:11 AM

This album release technique is not too different from Beach House's Teen Dream, am I right? I like both albums, not putting down TVotR or anything at all, but it doesn't seem *all* that original, although I do really like their style.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:12 AM

setlist?

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:12 AM

Very underwhelming show. I like the new stuff and I was still bored

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:13 AM

^are you blind?

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:14 AM

Setlist was a little drab, but they still put on a hell of a show. Gotta say that they seem most into their "mid-tempo rockers" these days. They kind of snoozed through the new slow stuff and rushed through the old high-energy tracks.

Anyhow, TVOTR at 70% is still better than most bands at 100%

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:15 AM

das racist is NOT GOOD

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:16 AM

The crowd was pretty lifeless. It seems to be the norm for their Brooklyn shows. I remember looking around the Masonic Temple a couple years ago and thinking "who are all these people just standing around?" Mostly the same last night. Know why they didn't do the second encore? Because people could barely be bothered to applaud for the first one.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:18 AM

just because i pay to see shows and stare straight ahead without moving a single muscle for 95 moinutes doesn't mean i'm not enjoying myself. i'm just thinking about my meaningless existence and all my disposable income. it can get distracting at times. leave me be.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:23 AM

looks blah..

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:29 AM

i wish the ringing in my ears would stop...

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:33 AM

Lil Jon was pretty nasty on the drums last night!

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:34 AM

i wish people would stop dancing at shows and having a good time. it distracts me from thinking about my meaningless existence and all my disposable income. leave me be.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:40 AM

The crowd was pretty blah. The best part of the whole night was when I walked into the venue and the Cosby Show theme song was playing. I ordered a beer, took a moment to myself, and just sat there and listened.

Posted by The Real Real Yup. PERIOD | April 13, 2011 10:41 AM

I have purchsed every TVoTR album except this one. Seriously, the new album is trite, too poppy/ simple, and some of the lyrics are flat-out cringeworthy.

I have seen them numerous times, the setlists have ALWAYS been terrible and added a huge lulls in certain parts of the shows. While certain songs rock, others just seem flat and uninspired.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:42 AM

Hummus makes really good shaving cream for those beards.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:42 AM

So who's next to play Radio City this year....

betting on Animal Collective

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:45 AM

In all seriousness, I saw TVOTR three years ago (give or take) at 9:30 club. I found the show to be underwhelming. Was it just a bad night or do they not translate well live? I was not motivated to get to these shows, and I feel pretty good about that decision.

Posted by BLG | April 13, 2011 10:53 AM

^Why is it bad that bands play Radio City? Dude are you still bummed that they are selling Nirvana shirts in Virgin Record Stores? Get over yourself.

Posted by The Real Real Yup. PERIOD | April 13, 2011 10:54 AM

omg i looooove animal collective

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 10:55 AM

So who is going to mash up the new TVOTR record with the new Foo Fighters record to create the Wasting Nine Types of Light mixtape?

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:00 AM

I agree that there is something that doesn't translate about TV on the Radio's live performance. I haven't seen them in years but I couldn't put my finger on what was missing. They are great musicians, they sound pretty good, but their set list had a lot of stop/ starts. It's not my idea of an AMAZING show but there's something comforting seeing these guys and how much they've grown. I say good on them.

Posted by The Real Real Yup. PERIOD | April 13, 2011 11:00 AM

Radio City is an amazing venue. I hope more bands play there. I don't give a fuck if hipsters don't like to be "seen" there.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:01 AM

Das Racist is terrible. It's sort of insulting, as a rap listener, watching them sit onstage, being deliberately shitty, constantly hammering home the one-note joke of "haha, it's funny because WE'RE ACTUALLY NOT VERY GOOD AT RAPPING!"

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:02 AM

So is it worth it now to shoot for tonight's show? I want to go but reading these comments is almost making me reconsider...

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:06 AM

Das Racist sucks! It's hip hop from drunk bros who pump their fists wearing their white Ray Bans and tank tops.

Posted by The Real Real Yup. PERIOD | April 13, 2011 11:08 AM

i don't understand why some talented people give credence to das racist. they were part of reggie watts' taping for his comedy central pilot and all they did was sit there and eat raw vegetables from a whole foods spoof. Ashok is a fool. they should shut up, and sit down.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:10 AM

If you don't like Radio City Music Hall, you need to seriously reevaluate whether or not you like music.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:14 AM

TVOR's performance value could have been greatly enhanced by a hewlett packard printer.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:17 AM

I'll see any band that I like at RCMH. The sound quality alone makes it worthwhile.

RCMH > most NYC venues except for BB, Merc Lounge, and a few other small venues.

Posted by Dan | April 13, 2011 11:24 AM

Das Racist is inconsistent. Some of the stuff is great, some not great. Lol jk (or whatever it's called) is great. Some other songs not really. of course, they give away songs for free, but a little editing would help. never seen them live though.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:26 AM

radio city is one of the best places to see a show in NYC! i still think about the spiritualized show a few months ago--definitely the best sounding/among the loudest i've ever seen. people react against it because they think big venue = selling out or something, but it's really a fantastic place to see a band you like

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:33 AM

Anyone know anything about Light Asylum? Happy I missed Das Racist last night...couldn't agree more with those that are anti RCMH - get a clue. Easily one of the best venues on earth to see a "large" rock show.

Posted by V-Man | April 13, 2011 11:38 AM

ha - obviously that should read "disagree" as opposed to "agree" re RCMH. It's too early to be this stupid.

Next question - anyone know what time TVOTR hits the stage tonight? My assumption is 9-930 but would be great if someone knew for sure. Thanks

Posted by V-Man | April 13, 2011 11:41 AM

It was a bad set and a disappointing show. After every uptempo song they played a new, slow song. I saw them at the 9:30 club too and I thought it was okay but was expecting more from such an intimate setting, especially with RCMH the next night. The crowd also sucked! I tried to dance and everyone was just standing still. There is a reason I stayed away from shows in BK for so long and it has nothing to do with hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:43 AM

this band is so over.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:44 AM

The crowd was really boring b/c it was mostly guestlist and industry folks afraid to look uncool. If it was fans only, it would have been wild and awesome, like their SummerStage show a few years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:45 AM

the best song on the new album is the first track and they didnt play it. Plus no Ambulance, I was a lover, Dreams, Dry Drunk Emperor, Golden Age, etc

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:52 AM

plz play dry drunk emperor guys

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:56 AM

this is one of the few instances in which id much much much rather see a band at radio city than a tiny place like music hall. radio city is gonna sound great. as long as they play young liars and staring at the sun its gonna be hard to complain.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:57 AM

they played i was a lover

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 11:59 AM

After reading these comments, I'm glad I was at the other TV on the Radio show last night.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:03 PM

whoever described the set as "underwhelming" was right on the money.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:04 PM

i bet after obsessively reading these comments, dave sitek will make sure tonight's setlist is much better.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:26 PM

anyone who was there last night remember what time they went on. Ticket says 8, didn't realize there was an opener though. Only reason i ask is i may be running late and want to know if i need to sprint from the subway station or not.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:31 PM

"I'm a big TVOTR fan and last night was BORING. Perfect example of a bad setlist ruining a good show. They didnt play a lot of classic tracks and the order/ flow of the setlist was weak...never got exciting."

true story. pacing of the show never felt right. low valleys of slow/new material in such succession that faster/older stuff couldn't save it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:32 PM

"If you don't like Radio City Music Hall, you need to seriously reevaluate whether or not you like music."

I like RCMH, but saying that someone needs to reconsider whether or not they like music is just downright retarded. Then again, it's always easy to get away with rampant blowharding on BV.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:36 PM

12:31: they started at 10:10 last night

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:38 PM

To those asking about the set times, you should call either the venue itself or the Merc Lounge (since the event is on the Bowery Presents website).

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:39 PM

I wasn't at the show last night but I have fond memories of seeing TVOTR at Cafe Eleven in St. Augustine, Florida in 2004 or 2005. It was a seriously amazing show, and I haven't seen them live since then because I never wanted to ruin that experience. Sounds like I made a good call. Plus the new album is pretty weak.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:41 PM

they went on right after 10. and people really need to lighten up at shows rather than stand still as tree trunks. if you're going to a rock show, you do not have the right to shoot dirty look at somewhat who has the gall to brush up against you in a jam-packed pit or, gasp, attempt to dance.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:43 PM

http://www.bowerypresents.com/event/6078

It says the show starts at 8. One opener (as of now). So most likely anywhere from 9:00-9:30 is when TVOTR will come on. Plan accordingly, fellers.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:44 PM

Racist, what a great word to promote.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 12:46 PM

what i don't get is why i have a printed ticket... did they mandate the paperless ticket thing after the general sale? that's when i got mine.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 3:14 PM

shame on TVOTR for even having das Racist on the bill... why not have a good band or at the least and interesting/challenging band??.. not some fake-cred whores from CT - wake up assholes...yr eating yrselves - hope it tastes good.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 4:01 PM

Anybody know who was playing at the Bedford stop after the show? Killed it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 4:22 PM

^It was Tom and the Jay Street Bowlers.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 4:27 PM

FYI, TVOTR come on at 9:00, per the Merc Lounge box office.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 4:40 PM

it was a great show...

did seam rather short

the set list is misleading

there was only one encore

no lovedog or method played

which was actually kind of a bummer

but overall great show!!

double

spacing

is

awesome

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 4:49 PM

yeah, i'm going to reevaluate using my rcmh ticket tonight based on bv comments. just thought ya'll should know that. i mean, i like tvotr and all, but only if it's going to be the best show ever. so, yeah, i'm going to go home and watch nine types of light on youtube.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 4:50 PM

it really says a lot that tvotr didn't play their planned second encore AT THEIR HOMETOWN SHOW (full of guest list friends to boot). when the lights didn't come up after the first encore, i exclaimed "yes!" but nobody heard me because they were already talking shit about the sound system, set list, vaginal pains, etc. way to go WB 2.0.

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 4:57 PM

where was the banjo!

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 4:59 PM

Does anyone have Das Racist's setlist?

Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2011 5:42 PM

Crybabies.

Posted by Klicka | April 13, 2011 8:55 PM

let me start by asking the usual hater-cunts on this site to fuck off--i'm a fan of TVOTR, but tonight's RadioCity show was likely the worse "band trying to prove something on a larger than usual stage" than any of us stuck there would've ever dreamed. i ask anyone leaving this shit show: who would feel guilty sticking it to the band by demanding a refund? paying fans were treated to an overwhelming lack of passion from the band--seconded by the typical twat-ish NYC crowd; flat, thudish, and bland playing (note: playing an uptempo song even faster, doesn't prove your 'chops,' only your lack of imagination); a set list seemingly designed to nullify any positive crowd interaction; and for a hometown crowd at a superlative venue (drink prices notwithstanding) how about you show some leg, fuckoos (a full horn section for one)? for a band that repeatedly wanted to "thank NYC for coming out" TVOTR's performance felt all too whiskey-dicked.

Posted by sev | April 14, 2011 12:19 AM

um... what show were you at? they fucking SLAUGHTERED radio city.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 12:43 AM

radio city was my 3rd tvotr show, the only headlining one i've seen, and o ma god it was awful. and the other two were some of the best live shows i've been to. their pre-encore set was less than an hour long. their encore was 2 songs. then they left. the crowd was fucking awful - then again, they should just never ever play a seated venue. still, fuck the crowd. not even head bobbing! nothing. i paid 50 DOLLARS FOR THAT SHIT are you fucking kidding me. and i love them. fuck. what the fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 12:49 AM

cha-ching

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 1:18 AM

LouFest used to be PointFest which used to be the VP Fair.

Before that there was nothing.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 1:49 AM

they are a studio band, their live show has always sucked, regardless of venue. sorry for the reality check.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 9:33 AM

i thought radio city was great! and everyone around me was dancing and into it! so sorry you had a bad seat/vantage point/crowd area? but that doesnt mean it was a bad show for anyone else but you. pretty sure a majority of the people thought it was awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 9:38 AM

I thought it was a flat show. But I'm going to give the band the benefit of the doubt. I was sluggish from the MHOW show and a stupid late night at dart league monday night. Sorry if i brought anyone else down with me last night.

Posted by Cilantro | April 14, 2011 10:18 AM

I hate brown people so goddamn much

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 11:37 AM

RCMH will be the last time I see TVOTR. Supremely Disappointing. Might be the worse show I've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 11:44 AM

Crowd sucked, they were flat, they didn't play this way the last few times i saw them so i was disappointed, too. on another note not to be spoiled but what's up with just trombone? they couldn't splurge for 2 more horns at radio city- shouldn't it be special? that's why we paid the extra bucks for the venue right? PS they had to tell the crowd sucked.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 11:55 AM

Show was ok, fairly good. Not bad, not GREAT either. Then again I'm only just starting to get into this band.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 11:59 AM

yeah what the fuck, the other 2 times i've seen them at fests they had full-on horn sections. 5+. one dude? i mean to make rcmh worthwhile you gotta make it feel like a big deal show. they didn't go out of their way to make it special in any sense. supershort set. one horn. (and i just don't think the new songs are great.) GRANTED, if i were on stage with that crowd in front of me i'd want to get the fuck out asap too. shitty, shitty, shitty crowd.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 12:11 PM

i read somewhere that for 90% of people who attend a live music concert it is the first and last time they will see that artist. This may explain why the crowd blew.

Posted by Anonymous | April 14, 2011 12:27 PM

Really good show, sound was glorious, i love rcmh... i think you should really listen to their new songs a bit more before you judge their performance and think others are not enjoying.
Some... or most of the people i know, really take it in the sound and digest it, hard to do it when the sound is live. Many distractions.
I danced to the right songs as did everybody around me. And i bet you clapped after every song with your idiot smile very high up. So shut the fuck up and dont go next time and save yourself some time from blogging your minuscule perspective. Assholes. I wish you would have never listened to tvotr. You dont deserve them.
