Inquisition
Maryland Death Fest

After Cathedral and Neurosis on days one and two respectively, Voivod headlined the large outdoor stage at Maryland Deathfest on Saturday (5/28), with Inquisition heading up the indoor stage at Sonar.

Though there are no pictures of Masakari, Mammoth Grinder, Creative Waste, Cretin, & Blood Freak, I did catch sets from the headliners as well as Avulsed, The Kill, Drop Dead, Doom, Defeated Sanity, Acid Witch, Hooded Menace, Cyanide, In Solitude, Impaled Nazarene, Hail of Bullets, Nunslaughter, and Exhorder.

Voivod
Maryland Death Fest

A crusty and furious set from Doom, an awesome and energetic set from Voivod, blackened doom destruction from Hooded Menace, Austrailian grinders The Kill and Detroit doomers Acid Witch were definitely my favorites, but I also thoroughly enjoyed what I saw of Hail of Bullets (around half of their set) as well as the political and furious Drop Dead.

Hooded Menace play Union Pool TONIGHT (5/31) with Negative Plane, Anhedonist, and Ilsa (who we interviewed) as part of a BrooklynVegan event. Online ticketing is not available, but there are tickets at the door for $13. Doors are at 8PM and the show starts at 8:30.

Tragedy, who played MDF Day One, also plays a show in Brooklyn tonight.

More pictures from the third day at Maryland Deathfest are below...

I love that you people already know you don't like metal but you wait for all these fucking pictures to load, just so you can make stupid comments. At least these guys didn't get tattoos to be ironic or masturbate with hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 3:51 PM

it's true, these people got tattoos because they couldn't compete socially in high school. So apparently they joined some club where you dress up as a zombie or whatever. I mean if you don't think normal people are going to point out that this is completely ridiculous you are expecting too much.

@3:55 what's having AIDS like?

This song explains the angst of our generation, our NYC generation:

4:22: No, no, he just has syphllis. He would've skipped some words if he had AIDS.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 4:44 PM

Let's talk shit about a group of people who look different.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 4:50 PM

those pics are funny.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 4:56 PM

Impaled Nazarene what? Haven't heard those guys since high school. I guess there's a reason for that...

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 4:58 PM

VOIVOD > The rest of the festival

Surprise, surprise more comments from people with no interest in metal who still feel the need to chime in.

In case all you "cooler than thou" kids haven't noticed: nobody really likes hipsters a whole lot either. You all get far more scorn than the metalheads. Everything you're saying about the metal subculture could also be said about indie rock and hipsters. You got picked on in high school so you listened to My Bloody Valentine and stared at your feet. Metal kids get picked on and listened to Slayer. It's really not so different so stop passing judgment that you're superior because you listen to Ponytail instead of Dropdead.

No need for the hate, people. It's just music. Sheesh.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 5:02 PM

5:02: Either there will just be more of the same shit comments (because yours will go ignored for the sole purpose of being obnoxious no matter what - sad as that may be), or there will be no response (because people who act like they're too cool for something usually don't have any comeback or response to a rational point).

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 5:13 PM

"That is beautiful. What is that? Velvet?"

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 5:22 PM

5:13, unfortunately you're probably right. It's frustrating to see these replies. You'd think commenters on a page called Brooklyn Vegan that focuses on music outside of the mainstream would be a bit more enlightened and open-minded. Sad state of affairs and funny to see these supposedly "mature" posters talking about how people over 22 shouldn't be at these shows. Metal is just another fringe music genre that some of us are very enthusiastic about. Granted it may be a bit more fringe than most but this bashing is pathetic and small-minded.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 5:28 PM

Cianide is not spelled correctly.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 6:29 PM

Metal isn't fringe, it's been around as long as punk music has. This alternative pop metal crap that gets played constantly today is the fringe shit.

If you don't like it, don't listen...it's pretty easy. Even a brainless metalhead such as myself can understand.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2011 7:44 PM

5:28: Yeah, I hear ya man. But trash commenting on this site is nothing new regardless. Still sucks though. But nevermind any of those losers.

Also, 7:44 is right too.

Theres some good metal but my oh my there is way too much macho mediocre shit that just seems like a carbon copy of a few other metal bands so why is there hundreds of them today identical to each other??
Its almost hard to distinguish some of them apart unlike surprisingly even hardcore punk from the 80's where you could at least tell the difference even though there were big similarities.
