The Antlers @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Antlers

"Anchored by Michael Lerner's drumming, the group used a familiar, slow-building approach, eventually making full use of loud/soft dynamics. Initially hushed songs metamorphosed into gripping, intensely executed exercises in rock catharsis. The haunting "Kettering" was one example, a suitably brooding number off Hospice, the Antlers' debut album (essentially a solo Silberman song cycle concerning a terminally ill patient's drawn-out death).

Now a full band, the Antlers still deal on their new album with dark themes, albeit more generalized. "Putting the Dog to Sleep," which closed out their regular set at [Philadelphia's First Unitarian Church] (and concludes Burst Apart), makes clever use of mournful metaphor over a lilting, classic pop-song beat." [Philadelphia Inquirer]

Not long after performing their new album in its entirety for free at Knitting Factory (on 5/5), The Antlers brought their tour with Little Scream back home to NYC for sold out shows at both Music Hall of Williamsburg (5/19) and Bowery Ballroom (5/20). The Antlers played most of the new album and threw in a few cuts off Hospice too at the recent shows. The full set list, the rest of their tour dates (the next one is Sasquatch) and more pictures from the MHOW show, below...

I was shocked and appalled when Peter and Tim unceremoniously beheaded Sharon Van Etten's balloon stand-in and then proceeded to parade its corpse around the stage.

i was at the mhow show. this band is about to blow up.

I was at Bowery and this band may blow up soon, but they need to be careful. They may turn into something else entirely. At the bowery show I witnessed this dude near the back of the venue wearing a Muse t-shirt and an oversized, flat-brimmed baseball cap. He was pumping his fist to the more anthemic Hospice songs. It made a little too much sense and I realized it was a shade of the things that may come to pass. I certainly hope not...

Also, just too much down time between songs.

I see nothing wrong with dudes fist-pumping to Antlers songs. Their songs are all about partying, living it up, and shotgunning Tecates.

there was a guy like that at mhow too. probably the SAME GUY

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2011 12:22 PM

That guy should stick to Muse shows.

I don't think the band has any control over who goes to their shows. Although, it is a great idea to have bouncers scan people and not let anyone in who doesn't fit a certain requirement. Indie rock is all about sameness.

There was a guy like that at the Muse MSG show, too. Probably the SAME GUY.

Imma give a shout-out to those college-age kids who were first in line for all three Antlers shows. It's like they both recently had birthdays allowing them to go to 18+ shows and they celebrated by seeing their favorite band ever. I wish there were more people that passiona---hahah, I'm kidding. Those kids were losers.

1213 wins for dumbest comment today. Oh my god, I bet you totally liked them first too! What the hell!

Mike! Shout out for the drummers.

Bowery setlist was basically the same, except they played Parentheses second and No Widows third.

1:15, I picked up a couple of colllege age kids after the show who were crying after snagging a setlist. We frotted and fellated each other while In the Attic of the Universe played over my soundsystem. Probably the SAME GUYS.

(sigh) Why do I even bother reading the comments on this blog?

The Antlers show was great though.

Antlers on their way to becoming the next Muse?

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2011 1:52 PM

The Antlers? I thought it was "Die Antwoord". Why didn't somebody tell me? I've been making an ass out of myself!

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2011 1:54 PM

"Antlers on their way to becoming the next Muse?"

They could only hope, but no chance.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2011 1:57 PM

If they continue to follow their current template of starting off with a slow and whisper, then add sweeping crescendo after sweeping crescendo, then climax by pushing the bombast further into a fist-pounding, over-emotive shout-along...all they need is the stadium crowd.

Was up front at Bowery and just kept thinking "Man, these guys will be probably be opening for Radiohead on their next tour."

Antlers suck the deepest recesses of mianus. They wish they could open for Radiohead.

the new member of The Antlers look like a total douche...

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2011 7:25 AM

the new member of The Antlers is the man. You are a douche.

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2011 11:42 AM

the Antlers represent everything that sucks about Indie rock now, namely that it's all a bunch privileged white guys whining about how sad they are. Not to mention their only fans seem to be sad white guys. As for the guy in the Muse shirt, is anyone in this forum under the impression that bands like the Antlers are a big secret for the cool kids only? Take off the blinders. This shit is so mainstream and so are you.
