Modern Weepers

The Strut writes...

"There has been much speculation over who is playing the mysterious May 27th Mercury Lounge show under the moniker 'The Modern Weepers.' The answer?...

Reputable sources confirm it is some sort of comedy supergroup featuring Mike Myers and Fred Armisen. Details beyond that remain unclear at this point. Who else will be in the band? What will they play? Will they ask any musician friends to join them? Waynes World reunion? It may have something to do with Mike Myers' upcoming "Untitled Keith Moon Project.""

PREVIOUSLY: Who are the Modern Weepers???

the shitty beatles!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:35 AM

Well it contextualizes the show better than "come to Mercury Lounge for a night of musical comedy with Mike Meyers and Fred Armisen."

I am bummed it is now sold out but I assume I can get a ticket pretty easily outside from people pissed Radiohead isn't playing.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:35 AM

well played Brooklyn Vegan

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:35 AM

Worth it. Wish I had bought one now.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:35 AM

Mike Myers sucks. Who really thinks he's funny? His only worthwhile work that holds up at all is So I Married An Axe Murderer. Watching Wayne's World now is torture.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:38 AM

this was dumb. Why didn't they just announce what and who this was when the tickets went on sale? That way the people that wanted to go could have bought tickets and the people that didn't want to go would not have. Now they have sold tickets to people that may not have any interest as they assumed it would be something else, and people that really want to go to this are shut out.

really stupid way of selling this out folks.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:39 AM

if this is what it is, then is this really big enough for all the secrecy? I don't think so.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:40 AM

I dont get the 'Waynes World Reunion" bit...like the band is finally back together man!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:41 AM

the grip I had on my ticket just got a bit looser. Really don't give a sh*t- if this indeed is the show

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:41 AM

the problem is that the Strut fabricated this story as a way to get an exorbitant amount of hits to their site. there is NO TRUTH to this. further proof you people will believe anything on the internet.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:42 AM

Hoping for Armisen to play drums while in character as David Patterson so he won't see angry Radiohead fans flinging beer at him.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:43 AM

Mike Myers, Fred Armisen, and a secret third pretending to be a British band? Sounds fun to me! Hope the third is Bill Hader.

Posted by Cuse | May 11, 2011 11:44 AM

It is the show. BP and BV are having a good laugh at the sheep dummies who grabbed tickets to this. Biggest laugh though of course to the people who are posting saying they are excited about this or how great this is going to be. Please know you are either deluding yourself trying to justify getting played or you really are pathetic and have no taste whatsoever.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:45 AM

it's actually two guests! tyler and fishsticks crybaby.

8.0 bitches!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:47 AM

I don't have tickets and I'd go. It's $12, man! Though if this was all some marketing scheme, I agree, pretty lame.

Posted by Cuse | May 11, 2011 11:48 AM

"the problem is that the Strut fabricated this story as a way to get an exorbitant amount of hits to their site. there is NO TRUTH to this. further proof you people will believe anything on the internet."

You wish they did. Nice try Sorry bud but this is the piece of crap show.

The Modern Weepers are all of us. DON'T YOU GET IT?

Posted by SeƱor | May 11, 2011 11:53 AM

reputable sources tell me the Strut is wrong

Posted by Stefan Urquelle | May 11, 2011 11:53 AM

i didn't have any plans that night... and now i do and am looking forward to it.. should be fun...

although i do feel silly knowing that the performers and everyone working the venue know that every single person in there bought a ticket without having a clue what was going on.

Posted by john | May 11, 2011 11:55 AM

who called it with the shitty beatles comment in the original thread? step up and take a bow.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:57 AM

this does make sense. it adds up.

these guys are local and they are putting together a new joke band for one night, therefore no one is flying all in the way in from the UK for this one show, there are no leaks if it were a bigger group, and there is no info on the web as the group simply does not exist.

My guess is that no one was expecting this kind of speculation that there was a huge real band behind this.

kind of backfired I think on Mike and Fred and BV.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:57 AM

"reputable sources tell me the Strut is wrong"

Those reputable sources probably also have you sure the easter bunny and santa claus are real.

"i didn't have any plans that night... and now i do and am looking forward to it.. should be fun... "

Do yourself a favor and stand in front of a moving van. Life cannot get any better for you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:00 PM

"i didn't have any plans that night... and now i do"

this has to be the lamest excuse to go to anything ever.

thrilled to go this I see.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:00 PM

i'll take time out from writing my novel for this.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:02 PM

really?? so you would rather sit home and do nothing? That sounds pretty lame if you ask me.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:03 PM

"i didn't have any plans that night... and now i do"

hilarious. So any other plans you may have made on your own based on your own decisions for that night would have been less interesting than a decision made for you by someone else's silly mysterious hype?

you are the definition of a lazy sheep

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:03 PM

"really?? so you would rather sit home and do nothing? That sounds pretty lame if you ask me."

yeah, because those are the only two choices on a Friday night in NYC... go to this after being suckered in or stay home and do nothing.

there are no other choices. It's between those two thing only.

classic.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:05 PM

I have gotten word from a very credible source that this is the return of....... Fro-Hawk. Since the LCD run he has grown his hair out and those who bought tickets will get the treat of a 30 minute lecture from Fro-Hawk on what it means to be hip as well as an ACTUAL real time haircut on stage so you too can look like Fro-Hawk.

Posted by Adam | May 11, 2011 12:06 PM

glad i tossed back the 4 tix i had in my cart after all

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:08 PM

i bought this ticket hoping it would be the strokes, but expected to settle for something less.... i wouldn't say i am excited or disappointed for this, but it is only $12 at 8 pm on a friday night... not a terrible way to start the weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:08 PM

If you bought into the market scheme YOU are pretty lame, not the marketing scheme.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:10 PM

If you didn't have $12 to take a chance on this, YOU are lame, not the ticket buyer, and not the marketing scheme.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:13 PM

everyone who bought tickets is dumb.

everyone who didn't buy tickets is dumb.

everyone is dumb.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:16 PM

"If you didn't have $12 to take a chance on this, YOU are lame, not the ticket buyer, and not the marketing scheme."

Yes keep telling yourself this over and over shithead. Maybe you will actually make yourself believe this at some point. I guess the realization you are a loser and a sucker was too much for you to handle this morning.

12:16 nailed it. Everyone walks/talks like they know.We don't know shit.About anything. So we were all amused for a day. Let's find the next thing to be distracted by..

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:23 PM

the thread on this yesterday was way more entertaining than the show will actually be. thanks BV!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:26 PM

so when do we get actual confirmation and BV can take the question mark off of the heading of this thread?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:27 PM

Personally I am very impressed it got 560 comments. Did that beat LCD at MSG photos? damn.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:30 PM

3rd member is Sacha Baron Cohen, likely portraying Freddie Mercury.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:41 PM

Haha, you care.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:41 PM

should we all meet scalpers and beat them up? didnt james murphy say to do that?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:42 PM

Underwhelming indeed. The majority of Mike Meyers filmography revolves around Austin Powers and Shrek. He hasn't been funny for more than 15 years. Fred Armisen is a wanna-be indie rocker. Portlandia pretty much sucked after one episode. SNL has sucked for longer than I can remember, except for his dynamite Joy Behar impression I guess. HA!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:46 PM

fred armisen's obama is pretty hilarious.

and by "hilarious" i mean "not funny in any capacity known to the human race"

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:47 PM

"3rd member is Sacha Baron Cohen, likely portraying Freddie Mercury."

Sascha Baron Cohen is Orthodox Jewish. The show is after sundown on the beginning of Friday night Sabbath. He will not be there.
Also, this has nothing to do with the keith Moon Project. Apparently that movie is not even happening anymore.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:48 PM

this was all a plan to generate hype for a show and an act that otherwise wouldn't have got much press, and still really hasn't outside this blog. And you all fell for it hook line and sinker

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:49 PM

I hope the third guy is an actual musician

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:50 PM

SBC is not orthodox you nincumpoop, why are you making stuff up

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:52 PM

once this is official they should put the tickets back on sale that they held back. I'm sure this isn't really sold out anyway. part of the hype and the marketing.

They've already changed the number of tickets you could buy from 4 to only 2, so even though it's still 'sold out' they are obviously going to put the tickets back on sale at some point. It's all part of the plan.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:52 PM

yeah there's no way this is really sold out. If you think about it, no one was buying tickets to this for days until BV posted this, which means that the only people that bought the tickets were BV readers who were reading an posting on this blog. There's only been a small handful of people here posting that they bought tickets. If all 250 were sold there would be a lot more people on here posting they got them, considering this is the only group of people that bought them.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:54 PM

"fred armisen in general is pretty hilarious.

and by "hilarious" i mean "not funny in any capacity known to the human race""

There ya go.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:55 PM

this was never sold out

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:58 PM

Do you think these guys will play any hummus tunes?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:58 PM

bv may be able to turn out 560 comments on this nonsense, but at an average of probably five comments per reader, that's about 100 people, and MAYBE a quarter to half of those people are actually dumb enough to go ahead and buy tickets to something as dubious as this. even if they bought two apiece (and face it, most of you douchebags don't have girlfriends, and even if you do, she doesn't want to go to this crap early on a friday night), that isn't enough to sell the place out. brilliant marketing though, and there's no way bv is so naive as to have done this by accident.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 1:09 PM

a lot of hype got a lot of nothing

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 1:12 PM

i like how it's implied that all of the BV commenters are male.

"According to Baron Cohen, "I wouldn't say that I am a religious Jew, but I'm still proud to be Jewish". However, he keeps kosher and attends synagogue about twice a year."

Oh i bet you think you were very clever going to wikipedia(the all knowing bible right) and copying and pasting. Of course what you did not do is actually go to the article that this was cited from. Yeah or you would have seen the actual quotes

"there are certain things I do and customs I keep."
"Where possible he goes home on Fridays to observe the Sabbath with his family"

He actually does not work on the Sabbath. He is modern Orthodox.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:03 PM

"LOL @ 1:35. You are aware that not all Jews are Orthodox Jews, right?"

LOL, very aware but SBC is in fact modern Orthodox.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:06 PM

Can we go back to hating each other and not talking about Jewy stuff?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:09 PM

95% of Jews I met are pretentious rich assholes.

But I like Baron Cohen. He seems like a cool Jew.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:18 PM

you dipshit its right under your nose.

"Where possible he goes home..."
emphasis on "WHERE POSSIBLE"
Dont think the Torah says: "Keep the sabbath sacred, if you can. I mean you obviously cant always! So have a good time. Just dont forget to call your mother!"

"there are certain things I do and customs I keep."
Wow he just described EVERY FUCKING HUMAN.

There are certain things I do too as well as some customs. I buy fucking xmas presents. dont mean Im christian.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:31 PM

Is this what the Right means when they say the Jews are in charge of the liberal media?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:32 PM

SBC is not modern orthodox. wtf is that person talking about.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:32 PM

there are a lot of cool jews, you might just not know they are Jewish

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:35 PM

Modern Orthodox is a contradiction.

i LOVE how this thread went from people angry at bv, then angry at myers/armisen, then angry at each other for buying tickets to this show, and now it's an angry discussion about judaism. keep it up bv followers, this is entertaining....

Veronica?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:39 PM

Interesting classist argument that keeps surfacing in these threads: "sure the show might suck, but at least we have twelve dollars to waste on something we would never pay for otherwise." We are moments away from picking on the poor kid at recess.

ha! still no confirmation on the show.

now all the idiots who bought tickets are holding tickets to something they may or may not want to go to, all the people that would be into this can;t buy a ticket and no one knows for sure what is really going on that night yet anyway.

way to go promotors and BV, you've screwed everyone with this

funny how once a realistic lead emerges the number of posts on this topic dwindle. Shows that people were only interested if this was something better that they didn't know what it was

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 3:14 PM

classic hipster manipulation

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 3:15 PM

funny how a thread like this ultimately becomes a discussion of Judiasm based on a Jewish comedian who's not part of this thread's headline about two other comedians who aren't even Jewish.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 3:17 PM

interesting that once this info leaked now matter how unofficial, all the talk of Radiohead, The Beatles, Beady Eye, Yo La Tengo and the Who came to a halt

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 3:19 PM

I bought a ticket and will end up going. If I hate it and walk out, the cost of a ticket is not a huge loss. Has anyone seen Neckbeard Telecaster live? Maybe they'll be worth the ticket price if Myers/Armisen suck.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 3:23 PM

just because the ticket order page doesn't allow you to buy a ticket doesn't mean it's sold out. The ticket order page for the event doesn't say sold out as other shows do. It's entirely possible that they pulled the tickets off sale when they saw what was happening on this site surrounding the show and will sell them when they announce it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 3:27 PM

Hey Everyone,

I just want to apologize to anyone out there who might have bought a ticket yesterday and now regrets it.

It was never our intention to hurt so many hearts. It all just happened so fast. We may not be Radiohead or The Who, but we'll bring the love on the 27th if you'll bring your ears. Promise.

Best Wishes, Mike

Hey guys I just got a tap on the shoulder from my agent and she says Thom Yorke will be sitting in on theremin with Fred and me. Should be a blast. I also plan on having big time diarrhea that night.

Portlandia just added a link to the Modern Weepers on their facebook page, looks like the mystery is settled

I actually believe all of the above posts are in fact Mike Meyers. I'm sure he has a lot of time on his hands...given his recent career decisions.

I am a fantastic hummus chef and will have a large communal hummus platter at the show for all of you to enjoy. But it's BYOPT (bring your own pita triangles)

Posted by Mike Meyers | May 11, 2011 7:06 PM

Hey guys... It's Mike Meyers here. I just wanted to say I am really looking forward to rocking out with all of you at Mercury Lounge and then going to Mamouns for the afterparty where we can all sit down and enjoy a few side orders and laugh about all these other Mike Meyers who wouldn't know where to find a good hummus dipping session.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 7:21 PM

This is the comedy equivalent of Kobe Bryant or Shaquille O'Neal trying to rap

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 7:27 PM

I think it's a clue
The Strokes played the Mercury lounge in 2002
as The Shitty Beatles

Fred Armisen was cool for a second when he was dating Petra Haden. Now he dates prom queens and plays in a band with my dad? Fred Armisen lost his cool.

Mike Myers is my dad.

Modern Weepers were so much better when then hoodwinked everybody last year at a much smaller club on a Wednesday night.

Posted by Morris Buttermaker | May 11, 2011 10:26 PM

wow, twelve hours later and no comments. I guess no one cares who the Modern Weepers are anymore.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2011 11:04 AM

Who are they?

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2011 11:33 AM

The third member is Jello Biafra, so all you haters can suck it.

Everything's better with Jello.

I'd actually prefer this to seeing some other douchy band. At least this is somewhat of an "event" type thing. Kinda wish I got tix.

Posted by oops typo | May 23, 2011 7:27 PM

hilarious. after all of this nonsense they actually put the "sold out" tickets back on sale without officially confirming anything!

so now you have another chance to buy tickets for something that you still don't know what it is.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2011 12:56 AM

It is not Mike Myers. It's Fred Armisen and Seth Myers. Confirmed this with Fred when I ran into him this weekend at Balthazar.
