Odd Future @ Highline Ballroom
Odd Future

Odd Future played Highline Ballroom on Friday (5/13) as part of a week long string of shows for the LA hip hop crew in celebration of the new Goblin LP by Tyler, The Creator. We already mentioned that the NYC show happened, and who some of the guests in the crowd were (we forgot GZA). Now here are some pictures from both the show, and other places Tyler & crew visited while in NYC. They continue below.

Today's even hotter news comes from the New Yorker who interviewed the missing Earl Sweatshirt, who was located by Complex Magazine at a camp in Samoa in April. In the New Yorker piece (which is only available in its entirety with a New Yorker subscription) Earl speaks on the current wave of hype and the backlash on his family due to popular OFWGKTA slogan "Free Earl":

"Initially I was really pleased that all these people claimed that they wanted me released because I thought that translated into 'they care,'" Earl wrote. "So time progresses and the fan base gets bigger and the 'Free Earl' chants get louder but now with the 'Free Earl' chants come a barely indirect 'Fuck Earl's Mom' and in the blink of an eye my worry changes from 'will there still be this hype when I get back' to 'Oh shit I just inspired a widespread movement of people who are dedicated to the downfall of my mom.'"

Earl added, "The only thing I need as of right now is space. I've still got work to do and don't need the additional stress of fearing for my family's physical well-being. Space means no more 'Free Earl.'"

The article mentions that his return is currently up in the air.

In other (and possibly polar opposite) news, Tyler the Creator responded to the criticism from Tegan & Sara regarding Odd Future's "misogynistic and homophobic ranting and raving". And by that we mean, Tyler maturely tweeted, "If Tegan And Sara Need Some Hard Dick, Hit Me Up!" Yikes. More NYC pictures below...

this music is for kids that we've already given up on.

for adults to waste their time on it, it's just plain sad.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 1:56 PM

I'm sure Tyler would find the juvenile commenters on BV to be comedic geniuses. Probably have matching IQs too.

All of this is disgusting...but what does Frohawk think????

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:16 PM

These kids are media savvy and they totally understand how to manipulate it. Like it or not, we're all eating out of the palm of their hands simply by paying attention. They're smarter than you think.

p.s. Remember when BV was obsessed with Die Antwoord instead of these guys? Looking back, they don't look so bad now do they?

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:18 PM

Brooke Robbins ticket to internet stardom = "the fisheye guy"

Good luck with that.

@218 No they don't. Shock has always been the easy way to get media attention, whether you try or not. I guarantee you they did/do not sit down and plan all this shit. They are a bunch of douchebags who say cunt a lot and people react. That'd not media savvy, that's called being an 18 year old asshole with limited talent.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:23 PM

Die Antwoord is head and shoulders above Odd Future.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:23 PM

>That'd not media savvy, that's called being an 18 year old asshole with limited talent.

agreed. and, i'd like to add, "at best".

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:27 PM

I think 2:18 has it right. One minute they're jumping off rooftops in Boston trying to cause riots, the next minute they're getting interviewed and performing clean versions of their songs on BBC. But whatever it is, it's working for them.

So is the whole Earl's missing thing a publicity stunt?

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:30 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:52 PM

Earl Sweatshirt is only "missing" because he's the far superior emcee of the crew. You're not going to have the best underwhelm the rest, are you? Earl's going to "reappear" when their popularity has begun to wane and they need something more substantial to keep the spotlight on them.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:53 PM

All press is good press. Keep talking about us please.

Finally found a purpose for Odd Future: gives my suburban white ass a justifiable excuse to say "nigga." Thanks, guys, I needed that!

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:58 PM

Hahaha!

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 2:58 PM

@ 2:58 It's true!! I've been calling all my buddies "nigga" (always careful to not pronounce the "er") for weeks now. Really liberating. We're gonna be done with it soon and move to the suburbs. Thanks guys.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:01 PM

2:58pm

"my suburban white ass"

regardless of whether you're joking or not, you'll look like a dick saying "nigga". only minorities can say nigga and get away with it. it's all in the intonation. you'll just sound straight up racist and foolish saying it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:03 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:06 PM

Yeah Tyler is a white person's name. It needs to be like JaTyler or something where they add extra letters to a normal name. Black people names are so silly.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:09 PM

"Ignore the lily-livered haters!"

Spoken like a straight-up cracka.

Posted by soysalami | May 16, 2011 3:09 PM

No. Everyone, regardless of color, looks like a fucking moron when saying it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:17 PM

Tyler looks like a fag.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:18 PM

@2:23 & 2:27 - There are an awful lot of 18 year old assholes with limited talent in this world...but very few of them are on the cover of every major music mag and plastered all over the press like these guys. The point is...they are better at manipulating the media than they are at making music. The very fact that we're debating this proves it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:25 PM

WHO GIVES A FUCK

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:27 PM

Has anyone checked into Tyler's background to see if he's even qualified for rapping? Is he from a broken family and a neighborhood rife with drug dealers and pimps? He seems oddly suburban? Skateboarding?

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 3:30 PM

Haters gonna hate and rapers gonna rape. Tyler has a tiny penis. I know cuz I saw it when I was raping him. Excuse me miss, does this rag smell like ether?

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 4:35 PM

4:15 is the truth.

Last we heard from Earl was: "Go ahead, fuck with us — without a doubt a surefire way to get your mother fucked."
Now dude is panicked for his mom.

Between that and Tyler's eloquent response to Sara, it's becoming even clearer that faced up to scrutiny, these guys fold like the empty gimmick that they are.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 4:41 PM

I hope Earl's mom gets a turned on curling iron in her vag.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 4:59 PM

>>>>Between that and Tyler's eloquent response to Sara, it's becoming even clearer that faced up to scrutiny, these guys fold like the empty gimmick that they are.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 5:19 PM

@325, I still disagree. They are not manipulating the media. The media LOOOOVES to make big issues out of meaningless crap. They are going at this story like there has never been a backlash against controversial artists before. That is not media manipulation, it's the media being stupid and arbitrarily choosing these guys, probably because some celeb tweeted about them months ago.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 6:01 PM

I don't have a problem with any lyrical content as I think we need to do whatever we can to protect free speech. What I do have a problem with, however, is all these stupid teenagers that won't get that Odd Future is saying shocking things just for the sake of stirring up controversy. I give it less than a month until some Wolf Gang fan rapes someone and this shit blows up in their faces.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 6:34 PM

3:17

massively disagree. it's the same thing as saying dude or man. it obviously comes from 'nigger', but 'nigga' is, again, like saying dude or man. it is what it is. if you think it's moronic is because you are clearly white. if you weren't white, you wouldn't think that. it's a goddamn word that a particular culture uses, a culture you are quick to deem 'moronic'. let it be known, I don't even consider myself a part of this culture, entirely, but I understand it enough to stand up for it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 6:44 PM

deep commentary T&S (whoever you are) but you miss the biggest issue; when will people finally take tyler to task for writing songs about having sex with dinosaurs!

sorry the kid isn't writing progressive protest jams, but your criticisms are equally applicable to 99.9% of rap out there. so basically, the open letter should just read "i don't get/like rap, i'm obsessed with identity politics, and i take shit way too seriously."

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 6:58 PM

LOOK OUT CHARLES BUCKOWSKI TEGAN AND SARA ARE COMING FOR YOU NEXT!

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 7:01 PM

Odd Future is the Vampire Weekend of indie hip-hop...

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 7:08 PM

Tegan and Sara are ironically aligning themselves with conservative, reactionary forces such as Tipper Gore, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News when they start moralizing and lecturing to others about what is suitable expression in the art world.

Moreover, this kind of bickering from within so-called identity politics movements only serves to do the bidding of the right wing fascists anyway -- that is, it benefits them that factions of the left and minorities are pitted against one another while they laugh all the way to the proverbial bank...

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 7:20 PM

Yeah. That makes a lot of sense 7:20. Instead of noting the inherent stupidity of identity groups which is made obvious by the kind of bickering, you suggest that it aids a third party. You seem confused about who the fascists are.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 9:49 PM

Nigger spic jew bitch faggot rape a kike's cunt faggot ass bitch.

What do you think? Pretty good right?

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 10:46 PM

ANYONE ELSE DETECT A WHIFF OF RACISM IN THE IDEA THAT HIP-HOP MUSIC ENCOURAGES/CONDONES/IS SOMEHOW RESPONSIBLE FOR CRIMES COMMITTED BY THE PUBLIC ???
WHY IS IT THAT THE CHARACTERS IN THE GODFATHER MOVIES AND ON THE SOPRANOS ARE FOLK HEROES BUT THE CHARACTERS IN HIP HOP MUSIC ARE VILLAINS?

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2011 11:06 PM

9:49:

identity politics is stupid AND it ultimately serves a conservative agenda in this case; while the so-called progressive left spends its time moralizing and lecturing each other and other minorities, the right-wing globalist cartels laugh all the way to the (world) bank...

and yes, in this case, the fascists can be found on both sides; one side seeks to demonize and dictate what is acceptable artistic expression -- "art should serve our social revolution or else it's degenerate and decadent" blah, blah, blah -- while the other hankers for global domination under the guise of a "new world order" and the false flag fueled clap-trap of the "war on terrorism", etc...

regardless, tegan and sara are expressing a conservative and reactionary position that aligns them (ironically) with the right-wing, moralizing, censorship crowd...

7:20

Agreed. But where is the line drawn where HUMANS stand up against bullshit corporate sponsored blatant homophobia? This dickface is only hyped because money is put into the "campaign" which funds blogs like this with advertising and Shitfork(TM) as well. If I started a band that screamed "Ni**er" in my songs and had no sponsors, labels behind me- I would get attacked asap, but when the "tastemakers" (est. 2000s blog hype) marketing team comes along and deems it "cool" with dollars behind it, who bats an eye? Praise to Tegan and Sara who stand against this shit once and for all. -and no their stance is not to benefit their careers.

lastly- Irony is not "progressive" or "cool". I long to hear artists that are 2020 and not republicrat underlying homophobes with heart in mind to carry each other towards OUR future. ODD Future is just that- ODD that someone could be so fucking immature.

To everyone who has negatively commented on the fact that there are a lot of white people in the audience, if white people never embraced black music, there would never have been rock and roll.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 12:56 AM

I know its incredibly immature of me, but I absolutely love how much this kid pisses people off. Its fantastic.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 2:08 AM

@2:08AM

There would never have been rock and roll?

Rock and roll still existed without white people embracing it (though it did get its name from a white guy). Blues existed for decades without whites embracing it (still does). Chuck Berry and Little Richard played their music before white people noticed. They would have done it even without whites embracing it.

I think what you mean to say is that rock and roll wouldn't have been as popular without white people embracing it?

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 2:16 AM

12:40:

why don't you dispute the comment based on its actual content, instead of sounding like a fucking child?

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 4:54 AM

12:29:

an important part of what's being discussed here is your (and odd future's) right to have such an offensive band and to express yourself however you like;

interestingly enough, both moralizing left-wing "progressives" and moralizing right-wing regressives would like to keep you from being able to do so.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 5:01 AM

If you scan instead of read the comments of this post, it doesn't make any sense at all. I even saw something about the war on terrorism, what the fuck lol

It's a major false equivalency to group OF's content with "99%" of rap, OR to group T&S and others' reactions with conservative censorship. Dead wrong folks.

I can rap all day long about how many hoes i fuck consensually or how fucking wack all my haters are — whatever your taste / opinion on them, themes of misogyny & confrontation are STILL NOT REMOTELY THE SAME as rape & homophobic hatespeech.

And nobody is calling for censorship. Merely taking the masses / critics / bandwagons to task for their open, blind embrace of this shit.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 10:39 AM

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 10:39 AM

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 10:42 AM

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2011 10:52 AM

Comments like 12:29 and 12:40 are exactly the kind of comments that Tyler laughed at on his twitter. I paraphrased "Funny seeing them analyse what we do.. NIGGA, IT'S NOT THAT SERIOUS'

Not even a fan of these guys, in fact I really don't like the whole hype machine around them at the moment, a sort of monster on overdrive, BUT I can understand ENTIRELY what he means by that quote. Let them do what they want. If you think it's ridiculous and shit, then think that.

The funny thing is that arguing and dissent and complaining about a group like this is JUST as part of the hype machine as those people, ALL of those people, that take a liking to this. Because no one is listening to you and no one will care that you don't like it. They only care that THEY like it. That's life, guys. I don't have to explain that to you. Let them do their thing and do yours (or 'do you', as some would say)

Everyone deserves to be treated equally. It doesn't matter if you're black, yellow, brown or normal.

tegan & sara need to shut their fucking mouths. no one complains about them forcing their awful, bland alterna-punk on the masses. it's a big world out there, grrrls. plenty of room for everyone.

""It's a major false equivalency to group OF's content with "99%" of rap, OR to group T&S and others' reactions with conservative censorship.
Merely taking the masses / critics / bandwagons to task for their open, blind embrace of this shit.""

bullshit; you're still attempting to dictate what is acceptable artistic expression; what about a novel like american psycho? do you "take it literally"? i'm sure it doesn't fit into your fascist version of socially acceptable art...

Posted by Anonymous | May 18, 2011 5:32 PM

regardless, it's still white middle class "progressives" trying to impose their idea of socially correct art onto others...what about the novel american psycho? you probably take it "literally" right tegan and sara???

>>blind embrace of this shit<<

So I guess this is officially becoming a Zombie Lie. I don't think I've read a single article or review of Odd Future where the writer didn't weigh in on their lyrical content.
