Modern WeeperS

After a week of research with no leads, I'm now asking you... Who are The Modern Weepers? According to Mercury Lounge's website (they play there on May 27th)...

"The Modern Weepers are a three piece band from Manchester, England. Well travelled and well known in their native England, The Modern Weepers continue to thrill audiences and critics alike with their electronic melodies and classic Mope Rock lyrics. Led by Mancunian frontman Gary Dibble and co frontman "Hugh," they are backed up by the American Chet Skinship on keyboards. Since Gary's recent release from Her Majesty's Prison in Wormwood Scrubs for political protests (Miners strike) and "Hugh's" "acquittal" on morals charges, the Modern Weepers will begin their 10 city USA tour on Friday, May 27th at New York City's prestigious Mercury Lounge."
Whoever they are, tickets are on sale.

I dunno, 'Bomb-Fest' just doesn't seem like a great name for a music festival (or anything) these days. Can't they come up with something else?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 10:47 AM

I cannot tell if BV is being snarky. Is this a supergroup/famous band that he already knows about but is playing dumb to drum up publicity? Or is he really genuinely vexed? I mean, is this really the only band on the M. Lounge schedule he knows nothing about?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 10:49 AM

" I mean, is this really the only band on the M. Lounge schedule he knows nothing about?"

I think the point is that, as one of the tags says, this is a secret show. There is no such band as the Modern Weepers

@ 11:18...I was thinking either Beady Eye or Noel's project. Noel was shooting a video in California...so it's possible.

If this is the case it's bullshit that Mercury Lounge hypes up a show just to sell more tickets for a fictitious supposed well known English band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 11:33 AM

I love the hype BV! How much do they pay you to do this? As much as PF gets to hype up garbage bands nowadays?!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 11:34 AM

"BV is wrong to do this. I know who the band is (work at Mercury) and can assure you that it is a band that would have a hard time selling out Bowery."

ok, then so who is it?

If you are annoyed that BV is hyping up a show that should not be hyped, you are contributing to it by not stopping it here and now and spilling the beans.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 11:35 AM

"BV is wrong to do this. I know who the band is (work at Mercury) and can assure you that it is a band that would have a hard time selling out Bowery."

Wait, why is BV wrong to do this then? If this is a band that would have a hard time selling tickets, then this post will generate some much needed ticket sales thus helping the performers as well as the scum promoters you work for.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 11:37 AM

yeah the fact that you say you know who it is but won't tell runs counter to your claim that it isn't a big enough group.

You're obviously not telling for a reason, so you are amping up the hype machine that you claim is not warranted.

Oasis has used the mod target label also and has the same drummer as the Who (Ringo's kid), so then logic says it could be Oasis, The Who or the Beatles

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:02 PM

Early show on a Friday night? Sounds good to me. Even if it is a mediocre, super-hyped band, I sort of don't mind the idea of just getting a ticket to see someone I wouldn't normally necessarily want to see otherwise. I like this gamble. If it's a shit band; oh well, 14 bucks down the drain... no biggie. But if it's someone insanely awesome and this is the show of a lifetime, then it's a score.

Plus, I have the rest of the night to dick around.

I honestly don't see the need to have a negative approach to this. It's like buying a lottery ticket

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:03 PM

Why would it be Oasis? They're broken up. Plus, Liam and Noel's egos are far too big for them to be playing a small place for 10 bucks. I doubt it's Beady Eye seeing as they're charging almost 50 bucks for their Webster Hall show.

You are missing my point entirely. The difference is that we have no idea who the band is. I am into the gamble of it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:16 PM

This is actually going to be a Smiths reunion show, and the only reunion show they will play....for the express purpose of denying the rumors that they will ever play again. Let me explain: they will open with "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby," Morrissey will stop mid-song to explain how he is singing to the world and how the killing of animals worldwide must stop and everyone must become a vegan before the Smiths would reunite; he will proceed to tear his testicles off and eat them in homage to his prior statement that he would rather eat his bollocks than play with Johnny Marr again. The show will end and that will be that.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:17 PM

"of course you have no idea who the band is and you won't when they hit the stage and your in the venue.

Kind of paradoxical, but Bowery Presents is so obsessed with money I very much doubt they would let "just anyone" apply this type of marketing to a show. It's a gamble and when this type of marketing appears, a large guarantee has usually been paid somewhere in the mix.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:22 PM

@12:18 It is true that any venue could apply this marketing scheme...once. As someone in the music biz, let me explain something to you. Mercury Lounge has something called credibility -- that means that when they create buzz around a show like this, people actually believe it's going to be worth while. Know why? Because they only do this when it IS something worth while!

Quit being such a grumpy Gus and just go for it. All you have to lose is $14 bucks.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:22 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:22 PM

"Kind of paradoxical, but Bowery Presents is so obsessed with money I very much doubt they would let "just anyone" apply this type of marketing to a show. "

Totally astute point there. BP absolutely would not let just any band pull this type of thing, nor would any band really want it to happen.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:24 PM

"Because they only do this when it IS something worth while!"

Oh you are so completely wrong. They have done this before for complete shit bands.

And of course it not sold out. There can't be that many suckers.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:25 PM

what kind of marketing? There is no marketing beyond this silly post. If it wasn't for this post on this blog no one would be paying any attention to this at all. No one is making this into anything other than this site. The Merc is not claiming this is anything other than the band that is advertised. This blog doesn't know who they are and questions it.

Mercury is not stupid enough to book a band without any means of marketing (not a single song released?!) and I don't think Brooklyn Vegan is in cahoots with Bowery Presents. Lets face it, it's a secret show.

The problem with this incredibly stupid theory is that Googling the name produces zero results. There is no such band as the Modern Weepers.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:34 PM

I choose to read the poster literally: the "Who" are the "modern weepers"

Posted by BLG | May 10, 2011 12:35 PM

"The problem with this incredibly stupid theory is that Googling the name produces zero results. There is no such band as the Modern Weepers."

yes but by that same logic if this was a really big band going under an assumed name such as the Modern Weepers, then surely something would come up on google. The band wouldn't be able to keep their alter ego THAT secret. The bigger the band the more people are involved withe the band and the more people are involved in it's fake name and secret show, so then something would come up on the web. It's actually more likely that this band is a real band and is so small in it's native England that there just isn't any web presence.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:40 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:40 PM

Very easy to find a word combo that produces little google results...they could only be having this "fake name" for the one show...not that difficult to do...I'd say the bio itself gives itself away to being some sort of secret show...if in fact this band is real, then I am very curious to find out what life is like behind the bars of Her Majesty's Prison...

Posted by BLG | May 10, 2011 12:40 PM

In all sincerity, why do you fucking morons keeping typing "the Who"? What on earth makes you think Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey will play the Mercury godddamn Lounge in two weeks? And for what reason?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:41 PM

It's actually a "noise band" of local hummus chefs performing with blenders.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:47 PM

anyone writing the Who is kidding... get a sense of humor

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:47 PM

Could always be a band doing a double dip that night. Early show at the Merc and headlining later at a bigger venue.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:49 PM

feel like if it was a legit band the tix would be more expensive

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:50 PM

Anyone else spot the Trumpton references?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:51 PM

Scott Walker

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:51 PM

if it were a bigger band we'd already know by now and the show would be sold out.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:51 PM

That logo looks like it took all of 30 minutes to make.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:53 PM

Trio? England? Mod Symbol?

The Police?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:53 PM

When is someone going to form a band titled Anonymous Brooklynvegan Commenters? I'd go see their secret show.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:54 PM

"feel like if it was a legit band the tix would be more expensive"

If a "legit" band needed the money, they would not be doing a small show.

I do not know who it is, nor do I care, but it should not be too hard to find out who it is. Very likely, it is another band that is playing in the area, but is not allowed to advertise another show because of the location clause in most standard contracts. Who is using another promoter/booker? There is your answer.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:54 PM

no one has even come close to outing who this band is. the show will be good times - well worth the $14. but i can understand the hesitancy.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:57 PM

Remember that BV post this summer when BV linked to a ticketweb sale for a "secret show". Wound up being complete bullshit. Probably more of the same.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 12:58 PM

or $10, excuse me.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:05 PM

"no one has even come close to outing who this band is. the show will be good times - well worth the $14. but i can understand the hesitancy"

Yeah moron as if you fucking know who it is. I'm sure you work at Mercury also

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:06 PM

BV is just doing what any good Bowery Presents employee would do, drum up some interest in an otherwise would be empty memorial day weekend show.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:07 PM

Stone Roses makes no sense, other than the "getting out of jail" part.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:08 PM

My friend's sister is the GF of a roadie who totally booked the plane tickets for this band...it will be worth it...spend the $14 bucks and rock out...I don't work at Merc, but my roommate does, I will ask him later...

Posted by BLG | May 10, 2011 1:09 PM

since when do Roadies book plane tickets for bands?

I thought management did that.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:11 PM

my friend's sister's boyfriend's uncle's cousin knows a guy at his deli who's bus driver has a friend who's ex-high school teacher's niece works with someone who knows someone who works across the street from the woman at the Mercury Lounge box office. She found out who the band is but I'm not going to tell you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:13 PM

It's Taco Time for Mom & Dad.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:14 PM

badly drawn boy probably

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:14 PM

i seriously think this is the Libertines

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:16 PM

FWIW-My friend just came back from buying some tickets over at Mercury for a few other shows. He asked the guy there about this and the guy laughed and said they had been getting a ton of calls today about it. While he would not tell him who it was he said it is no one big and not a big deal at all. Contract overlap type thing that was mentioned in an earlier comment.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:16 PM

this thread has generated enough buzz and enough questions that if this was something truly worthwhile the secret would be out by now.

The fact that the real band is still not known after all this speculation and that the show is still not sold out means this isn't that big.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:17 PM

12:47 PM is probably the most accurate guess.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:17 PM

THE CARS!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:20 PM

If the name is fake and the bio is made up, then what makes you think this band is really from England anyway? Could be a local or American band. The bio could be completely ficticious, or a total joke.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:20 PM

florence and the machine!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:24 PM

Tyler, The Creatow w// Kanye West & P Diddy.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:25 PM

Whoever keeps saying The Libertines needs to have a nail gun taken to their forehead.

Cmon, Goebbels would have a better chance of getting a visa into this country today then Pete

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:25 PM

nobody knows for sure yet? then this is bogus

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:32 PM

U2 minus Larry. Contemplated calling it Us3 but it seemed too obvious.

Posted by Dave Evans | May 10, 2011 1:33 PM

I think the big question here is if BV are in on this or not....

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:34 PM

Yo La Tengo. The Modern Weepers are the 2011 Condo Fucks.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:44 PM

not saying it's someone BIG, but this clearly has the hallmark of a "secret" show. a google search of the frontman, "Gary Dibble" also produces nothing.

made up band name, made up players names. unfortunately, will probably be some shit band looking for some buzz.

$12 isn't much, but the fake hype offsets the potential. i'll pass on this lottery.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:44 PM

I'm with 12:03,they nailed it, I can think of a lot more stupid shit to waste $13 on than taking a chance that this will be something awesome. Sign me up for the lottery ticket.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:46 PM

if they are trying to create buzz, if they don't reveal this soon it will backfire and they will get negative publicity.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:51 PM

I am already losing interest

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:52 PM

Thermals?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:52 PM

who are they????
At this point who cares?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:52 PM

probably just some local band with an early slot on a Friday night that thought up a bullshit bio and thats that.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:53 PM

well, it's sold out now, so i guess we'll have to wait and see

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:54 PM

It is now sold out.
There are 6 tickets for sale on StubHub.
And, it's The Rentals according to StubHub. Sigh I guess.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:56 PM

NOT sold out, douchebag.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:56 PM

so here's the thing. The bio says the Merc is the start of a ten city tour yet there is no info anywhere of any other shows.....

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 1:57 PM

there are no tickets on StubHub fro either the Modern Weepers or the Rentals. Nice try.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:00 PM

The "Buzz" surrounding this show is similar to the "Buzz" that my food processor makes when it's busy mashing up chickpeas.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:01 PM

so if it's sold out there's no harm done in the Merc or BV revealing who it is....

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:02 PM

I picked up a ticket. I'm curious to see if this is a real "secret show" or another gimmick that venues/bands are trying to use to get more people to see a band that wouldn't otherwise top 100 people.

1:34 and 1:38 also make a good point.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:03 PM

LOL it's sold out now.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:05 PM

it's the lemmings lol

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:06 PM

If we're lucky, it's a secret show by Shpongle presents The Shpongletron.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:06 PM

hilarious. They sold it out on the basis of not telling any of the ticket holders who it was.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:07 PM

they managed to fill up the room at fourteen bucks a head for an early show by not revealing the act. Good stuff

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:08 PM

12:47 wins for best comment! Also, this was posted at roughly 10:35 and already has two hundred commments. BV wins again!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:09 PM

considering it's sold out, one would assume that at least some of the people that bought these tickets knew who it was, and yet no one is posting this information. This leads me to believe that everyone that picked up tickets was getting them on speculation and has no clue who they are going to see.

Good job Bowery and BV.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:11 PM

it's LCD

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:13 PM

I'm "hugh". Nice to meet you. You shant be disappointed.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:15 PM

It's Daft Punk, Radiohead, LCD, Wu-Tang, and Right said Fred.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:16 PM

fantastic! Selling out a venue on spec.

this should be the new Bowery presents business model

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:17 PM

sold out? Ha! 250 people bought tickets for something not even knowing what it is.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:18 PM

Now Bowery and Merc will never again say who is playing. Its just a random band name each night with a made up bio.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:19 PM

easiest $3500 Bowery ever made

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:20 PM

sold out and they are not revealing the real band?

perfect.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:21 PM

There was anoter secret show like this one a couple years ago that BV posted about. I think the tickets were being sold on TicketWeb, or some other second tier ticket vendor. I never did hear what band played that "secret show", and I have had many restless nights ever since trying to figure it out. Thanks a lot BV!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 2:21 PM

Protip: Google "mope rock lyrics" and read the cached Baltimore Sun link. Then prepare for totally awesome mind-fuck. I am so psyched I bought two of these tickets!

it can't be anyone big because now that it is sold out there are no tickets to anything for that night at the Merc on the secondary market. If this was a big name it would have leaked out now. Everyone is holding on to their tickets in the hope for something that they know what of.

will definitely be a band of guys with beards

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:10 PM

not the Beastie Boys but lets start the scalping anyway.

Who'll give me $100 for my $14 ticket to see this mystery band that no one's ever heard of?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:11 PM

who are the modern weepers?

all the ticket holders when they find out they've been had.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:13 PM

Its the Smiths minus Morrissey. In his place will be a bleating goat.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:13 PM

Mercury Lounge site added an opening act to the show. Neckbeard Telecaster.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:14 PM

I didn't know who it was when I could still buy a ticket and I wasn't interested, now it's sold out and I want a ticket even though I still don't know who it is.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:15 PM

Definitely Morrissey...

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:15 PM

Neckbeard telecaster is opening

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:15 PM

Morrissey ain't playing for fourteen bucks.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:16 PM

According to the book "Rot, Rock and Rule", The Modern Weepers RULE. So, I'm in.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:17 PM

the answer may be literally right under your noses. The ad at the bottom of this page is for WHITE LIES who are a three piece from England and are playing a headlining gig at Terminal 5 which is also a Bowery venue.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:18 PM

White Lies ROT.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:20 PM

youre wrong

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:20 PM

^^ Except White Lies are playing Mexico on the 26th and Ireland on the 28th, so I highly doubt they're going to come all the way back to NY to play the Mercury Lounge.

It only takes ten dollars and a dream

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:30 PM

No 3:23 I only see 1 show in Ticketmaster. The only way that this show won't be an epic fail will be if it's the Beastie Boys, Radiohead, U2, Daft Punk or some other big name act. Too much hype.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:32 PM

I vote U2 still being an epic fail...

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:33 PM

Man, there's gonna be a shitload of tickets for this on craigslist once they announce who it is and everybody is inevitably disappointed.

I'm guessing maybe 15% of people who bought tix will actually want to use them. Hilarious.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:33 PM

I think $10 is too much for U2. Unless there are going to be dudes dressed as spiders falling from the rafters.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:34 PM

Hey 3:33, ever think that for people who actually have jobs, $25 isn't that big of a deal?

But I'm sure if you beg your mom, she'll pay you some tickets on the aftermarket.

Beady EYE

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:36 PM

Manuel de Homem-Christo, of Daft Punk fame, has embarked on a solo tour that will have him visiting 10 cities across the United States. Homem-Christo will be showcasing what he calls, "The Year of the Chickpea," which will find him situated inside a giant chickpea container, hiding himself and his machines from the audience. Outside the container, patrons are encouraged to make use of the pita triangles that will be made available at the door. Those in attendance will be invited on stage while Homem-Christo is at the helm, and slather their triangles onto what is aptly being called, "hummus after all"

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:36 PM

So was Neckbeard Telecaster added before or after tickets sold out?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:36 PM

How does dropping $12 ever equate to an epic fail? Even if its the Shitty Beatles, you're only out $12. This isn't trust fund money.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:37 PM

everyone is already disappointed and they haven't revealed the band yet

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:37 PM

where do people see neckbeard telecaster listed?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:37 PM

$25 can get you 12 PBRs at Welcome to the Johnsons.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:38 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:45 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:46 PM

I got the inside scoop from the guy who mops the floor at Max Fish. It's the return of Roxette.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:46 PM

if this was a big band playing a secret show and it's sold out, why would there be a need for an opening band?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:47 PM

Tix are already on scalper sites for $35. Fucking suckers.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:47 PM

If neckbeard's opening, then rhe weepers are likely local. Like dirty projectors, grizzly bear, or beirut

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:47 PM

$14 is the going rate for a movie in NYC. I would much rather see an band, even if I never heard of them. And you wont get bed bugs either.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:48 PM

Belin probably got really drunk and added this show to the Merc Lounge calendar to see if anyone would buy tickets for a non-existent event.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:48 PM

3:43 - The "boring thing" I do is write novels. I'm sure whatever you do is much more interesting.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:51 PM

so you write boring novels, so what

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:51 PM

hate to break it to you- writing novels is pretty boring.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:52 PM

@3:50. Not sure the point your're trying to make. I would think that if he would rather go see a band than music that he does go out. Movies can be Netflixd. Bands? Not so much.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:52 PM

3:52: not sure of the sentence your trying to type

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:53 PM

Actually, I think there really is a band called The Modern Weepers playing.

Posted by blahblah | May 10, 2011 3:54 PM

I would rather drop 14 bucks to see Thor.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:54 PM

The lead singer of Modern Weepers is outraged that the show sold out before any actual fans got their hands on tickets. He announced that there will be 5 additional shows at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, in an effort to screw the scalpers. 2 ticket limit, paperless.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:56 PM

LOL @ novel guy. Must be a hell of a pickup line.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT U WRITE NOVELS????

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:56 PM

They are back on sale. bought 30 more

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 3:57 PM

In my defense, I was replying to the idiot who said because I have money, my job must be boring. And I don't use it as a pickup line. When I was single, I hadn't published shit.

The links won't go through to the comments unless they're "approved," so just do a search for "modern weepers" in Google and the last 4 or 5 entries are all shitty ticket sites selling them for $30+. Not too difficult a search.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 4:01 PM

Dear sir/madam novelist: may we sample some of your work here in the comments?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 4:02 PM

NOT sold out!

Posted by Me | May 10, 2011 4:02 PM

all clues lead to Beady Eye: Manchester, the eye logo, the mod target....

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 4:03 PM

Ok, forget about who the Modern Weepers are.. I want to know who the novelist is. I think it's John Grisham. I know he loves hipster bands and hanging out with 20 year olds. I can tell.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 4:04 PM

NOT sold out!

Go outside and enjoy the weather bitches.

Neckbeard Telecaster are a real band?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 4:06 PM

Well give it up for 3:58: one of the few novelists who can brag about how much money they make.

So you either write teen fiction or you're just bullshitting to make a point. Either way, well done.

Posted by Rob Thomas | May 10, 2011 4:06 PM

why would a ticket agency sell $14 tickets for only $35 if this was a big band playing a secret show? Not much of a markup. Those ticket scalpers don't know who it is either. They see the hype and grab a few tickets just in case the same way all you other 'real fans' of Modern Weepers did.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 4:07 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 4:08 PM

Yo novelist, I've got some awesome story ideas for a mystery serial I've been shopping around. It's like a cross between The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. You interested?

Right. That's the whole point. They're already marking up tickets for a show where nobody knows who's playing. That's the funny part, see?

suckers!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:05 PM

the fact that there is no info on this band on the web can go both ways.. it could mean that no such band exists, or it could mean that it is a real band with no web presence at all.

What, SERIOUSLY??
This event sold out TODAY because of this blog.

Poor Modern Weepers....they only wanted to play for some Americans...now they will have an empty room.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:14 PM

Modern Weepers are playing a free show at South Street Seaport this summer.

They must be a real band

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:15 PM

good call 5:14

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:17 PM

this blog never suggested that this was a secret show by a bigger band under a fake name. This blog simply posted a question asking who this band was. Taken at face value all it is a question. There is no mention of secret show, fake band name, big artist etc. This was a major assumption on the part of the readers and commentators here, who assumed that just because BV asked who they were and no one could google them, it HAD to be a secret show by a big band.

You know what happens when you assume?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:18 PM

BV has created a monster.

this was on sale for four days and no one took any notice and no one leaked anything about this band being a bigger act. BV sees the listing and has never heard of the band, finds out no info on the web and asks the readers who they are today and the show sells out a few hours later without any one actually answering the question.

More power to you BV!

@5:18...You got served.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:24 PM

Brooklyn Vegan and The Bowery Presents are busy creating a band as we speak to play on that day at the Merc.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:25 PM

would a new band put in such a jokey bio when no one knows anything about them?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:27 PM

5:22 & 5:24:

just because they tagged it secret show doesn't mean they were telling you that they had any inside info on this. IT was mere speculation that's all.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:28 PM

Considering the UK Miner's Strike was back in the mid 80s, I'm guessing the members are pushing 50 years old. Talk amongst yourselves.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:29 PM

5:27:

yes if they had a sense of humor.

which is something a lot of the bands who are leading suggestions don't have.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:29 PM

the only band that is a three piece that has a sense of humor would be Green Day

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:30 PM

@ 5:28 Just because they haven't announced it yet doesn't mean its not going to be a live sacrifice of Justin Beiber.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:31 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA this is all very funny.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:31 PM

5:30 pm. Shows been sold out for hours. If the secret's not out by now there probably isn't a secret

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:31 PM

I love how you people think that if you can't find something on the internet then it must not exist. If I google it and nothing comes up it must not be.

There are things out there folks that are not part of the internet. It does happen. trust me.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:32 PM

@5:31

I hope they never announce it. I'm just glad to be 25 bucks poorer.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:33 PM

-5:32
Example? Just one good one will be all it takes.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:34 PM

what's to announce? If they advertise that the Modern Weepers are playing that night and it is a show by the Modern Weepers, then what is there to announce?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:34 PM

5:28, of all the no-name bands that are booked to play Mercury Lounge, why would BV single out this band, in particular, then ask THE READERS---of all people---for help identifying them?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:34 PM

@5:30
The only sense of humor Green Day has is that they consider themselves musicians.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:35 PM

If it was a real band, there would be some trace of them online. Period.

Green Day does have a ton of aliases..... are they scheduled to be somewhere that night?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:36 PM

5:34, of all the famous yes-name bands that are booked to play all over NYC this month, if it were one of those famous bands under this name, why would this thread go on for over 400 posts and still no one is able to figure this out all day?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:38 PM

5:36, agreed. Because of that one issue, I STILL think this is a secret show.

The description sounds like something Green Day would do, but they are not on tour now and I don't think they're gonna be out and about for a while. If they were a NY band, then maybe, but they're from the west coast so it doesn't seem likely they'd be out here.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:38 PM

not only does Green Day have a ton of Aliases as a band, but they go so far as to create fake names for each of the members as well as a backstory. This could be a Foxboro Hottubs type thing, although the ticket price would be more than $10.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:40 PM

it could be a "band" that is just forming for this one show (and the 9 others, if the bio is to be believed)

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:40 PM

if it were the Hottubs it wouldn't be an early show. The Bowery Electric show last year went on until like 2am

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:41 PM

Yea. green day are really, really, ridiculously original...

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:41 PM

they weren't on tour when they played the two Hottubs shows here last year either.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:42 PM

them crooked vultures.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:42 PM

this is so funny and stupid

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:43 PM

The bio sounds very Green Day/Foxboro-ish

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:43 PM

this is certainly not a real bio. And this band is certainly not from Manchester

If they are really from England and they were really doing a ten day tour, at least some of the other shows would be listed on the web to buy tickets to. There are no other shows listed anywhere. No band is going to come here from the UK to play only one single show at the tiny Merc at $10 a ticket and then go home without playing any other shows.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:46 PM

No matter what, this is now the buzziest band out there...

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 5:47 PM

right now the Modern Weepers are having a meeting and trying to figure out how exactly they can turn into a bigger band by showtime so as not to disappoint their sold out audience

You know you are a fucking mongoloid idiot if

-You believe this is The Who, Morrissey, Beatles, Radiohead, Libertines or any other big name band/performer.

-You think BV really had no idea who this was and was not in cahoots with BP to generate hype/sales

-You actually bought a ticket to this.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 6:09 PM

OK, let's start with the fact that the Brooklyn Vegan post starts off phony baloney right off the bat....

"After a week of research with no leads"

A week of research? It takes all of ten seconds to find out hat there is no information on the web at all on this band.

And BV could have just called up the Bowery Presents and asked who it was. I'm sure he has contacts there.

How much research can you do for a week on something that doesn't exist?

BV knows. That's the whole reason for this post

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 6:09 PM

My guess: 12:47 (#3) is correct.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 6:09 PM

5:58 - If this is really Radiohead can you post a confirmation on Dead Air Space?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 6:09 PM

Green Day

Yo Le Tengo would be the biggest letdown.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 6:17 PM

i have a feeling that no matter who the band turns out to be, it's going to be a pretty even split between people who are excited about it, and people who could give two shits.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 6:18 PM

I think it's Tom Vek. His new album Leisure Seizure comes out June 6th and I know he's in NYC as of today. Probably doing U.S. promo stuff.

OK, the largest number of posts I can find is somewhere around 550. Lets get up to 600, FAST!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 6:24 PM

Alright you folks....

its the fuckin

Strokes.

Posted by Glassjaw | May 10, 2011 6:25 PM

the fastest way to get up to 600 posts is to not tell us who the band is.

Once the band name is released no one will care anymore and no one will post to this thread.

Kind of like the way they sold the tickets eh?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 6:26 PM

Omg! Stephen Morrissey is scheduled for Letterman on May 25! This could be EPIC! He is promoting a new album.

Portishead.

See you there.

all neckbeard knows is that some english guys called us up and said "hey you fucking c!@#%s, you wanna open for us when we get across the pisspond? we heard you guys suck and play old wanker music, but like to drink and that's cool with us."

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 8:24 PM

"Portishead is actually not a bad guess."

Portishead is actually as dumb a guess as Morrissey, Beady Eye, The Who and some of the others. It's a great guess if you know nothing about Visa's, getting into this country to perform and totally ignore simple logic asking why would this band go through all that hassle to fly into NYC for 1 day to perform at a small club for 10 bucks a pop.

The one thing this thread has done today is illuminate clearly how many dumb shits read this blog.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 8:34 PM

The Mehdern Weepers.

Posted by I just mad a "MEH" joke and I hate myself. Time to cut! | May 10, 2011 8:35 PM

The only thing that would even remotely suggest it is Portishead is that there are three people in Portishead. They are not from Manchester. They don't have an American in the band. They are playing fests in Europe this summer, but not hitting the states until the fall (perhaps not until ATP NJ). If they needed a warm up show, why the hell would they cross the pond to do it? And why would they have a band like Neckbeard opening for them? Makes no sense at all.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 8:35 PM

OK, who the fuck even suggested The Who? Too many comments to look through. There are 2 members of the who left. TWO. That is THE stupidest suggestion.

(PS, it's fugazi... they aren't announcing it until after noon the day of the show to stymie scalpers. there is a 10 date Fugazi tour coming up. check the dischord site. it's there, thought HIDDEN)

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 8:39 PM

Yeah. It's clearly not the who or portishead. It's obviously Daft Punk. So does anybody know what time they are going on?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 9:04 PM

It's Bernie Williams, with Zooey Deschanel, and Prince.

Dawg, I heard it was going to be the gay and the bicurious members of Grizzly Bear.

kieth richards

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 10:32 PM

Yeah, it makes sense that a band like Fugazi would want to play a show for a room full of people who think they're going to see Yo La Tengo or Morrisey.

That bio doesn't seem to line up to get people showing up to a punk show.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 10:33 PM

I'm pretty sure its Corrosion of Conformity.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 10:39 PM

It Is the fucking CRIBS

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 11:17 PM

ALMOST AT 500!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 11:42 PM

So.. no confirmation?

Damn this shit is the epitome of hype..

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 11:48 PM

500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2011 11:56 PM

You are all wrong. It's a screening of the new Harry Potter. Mehggles, all of you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:00 AM

501! I don't win!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:00 AM

Here's what doesn't make sense here....

If a big band was going to play a secret show at a small club why would they go through all the trouble of making up a fake name a fake bio and a fake logo, book the show, put tickets on sale and then wait four days for a blog to question it, then remain quiet about who they are after it sells out?

Seems like a real roundabout way to sell the place out and then seems like a real strange move to continue to keep quiet after it's sold out. What's the point of all that?

No leak for four days after ticket on sale, then no leak after it sells out?

what's the point?

Wouldn't a big band just sell the tickets to their fan club or something and then let everyone know and then be done with it?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:29 AM

12:00: you weren't even 501, you were 502! double loser

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:30 AM

no hype for this before Brooklyn Vegan questioned this, and no reveal after they questioned it.

So this whole thing is just a Brooklyn Vegan hoax

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:32 AM

BV knows what's up. He's just being a dick

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:35 AM

yeah what's to be gained at this point by keeping this a secret still?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:40 AM

Foo Fighters!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 12:49 AM

it's Dirty Three

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 1:01 AM

If this really is a "big" band and the secret is revealed anytime before the actual day or night of the show, tickets will very quickly become soooo valuable that whatever small time "vibe" said big band is hoping for won't happen.

That said, this has Radiohead written all over it. Universal Sigh?

...and they did play a couple of tiny clubs after In Rainbows came out.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 1:27 AM

"The Modern Weepers continue to thrill audiences and critics alike with their electronic melodies and classic Mope Rock lyrics"

I'm not sure it's Radiohead, but they're at least playing off the idea of making people think that it's Radiohead

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 1:47 AM

If it is really a band called the Modern Weepers, then I think this thread has paid for the $10 already...thanks BV.

Posted by BLG | May 11, 2011 2:16 AM

Radiohead would never open a tour in NYC. Get over yourselves

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:33 AM

it is Joy Division with Ian Curtis.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 3:52 AM

and radiohead doesn't work with the bowery

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 8:03 AM

It is the new Les Claypool band. Les Claypool, Johnny Marr and Sting.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 8:05 AM

6:09 (#'s 1 and 2) are spot ON.

disappointed in BV.

miner's strike brought strummer and jones together again briefly.

the three remaining members of the Clash?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 8:28 AM

I found some Neckbeard Telecaster music online and can't figure who would let those guys open for them.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 8:50 AM

It cannot be Morrissey. Merc Lounge is in too close proximity to Katz's deli. The smell of all the Pastrami and Roast Beef wafting down Houston would make Morrissey keel over.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 9:22 AM

and the morning after, this is still a mystery

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 9:23 AM

Goblin did not get best new music!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 9:25 AM

we are all the modern weepers

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 9:45 AM

The Modern Weepers are a new band with Paul, Ringo and Scottie Pippen.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 9:52 AM

It's John Boehner's Proto-Patriotic Power Pop Patrol. With Paul Shaffer on keys.

Posted by Anon | May 11, 2011 10:01 AM

It's LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. They are bringing their talents to the Lower East Side.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 10:10 AM

Another blog is claiming it's a comedy thing with Mike Myers and Fred Armisen.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 10:29 AM

Could this have something to do with Mike Meyer's "Untitled Keith Moon project"

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 10:34 AM

what's the other blog?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 10:43 AM

In case anyone is still wondering http://t.co/LiRyanx

Posted by Josh | May 11, 2011 10:48 AM

wow..

if that's what it is.. hahahaha.

pat yourselves on the back, you fucking sheep who buy so easily into hype. you're all liable to stuff a dick in your mouth if it was promised to be Thom Yorke's. pathetic.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:02 AM

HAHAHAHA, you suckers who ran off and bought tickets thinking it was some secret big band playing. Enjoy some stupid Mike Myers comedy thing.
Hipster idiots got SERVED!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:04 AM

could be worse, it could have been neon indian or best coast or some shit.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:07 AM

I dunno, $10 to see Mike Meyers hamming it up sounds worth it to me!

Excuse me, I gotta go shove paperclips in my eyeballs...

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:07 AM

Wow. It was 12 bucks. If you dont easily have 12 dollars at your disposal YOURE the joke here. This still sounds like fun. I love Keith Moon. I used to love Mike Meyers. As long as it has nothing to do with Shrek or the Love Guru.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:07 AM

could be worse... my nose could be GUSHING BLOOD!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:08 AM

What's wrong with Mike Myers doing some music thing?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:10 AM

what's wrong with biting my toenails?

answer: NOTHING

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:15 AM

so then at least half of the 500 plus posts on here are by Mike Myers and Fred Armisen

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:15 AM

I'd say most of the post here are by those two, at least the unfunny ones.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:16 AM

nothings ultimately wrong with Mike Myers doing some music thing, if that's what you know you're buying a ticket for. But to buy a ticket for this show under the assumption that it's a big real band and then getting Mike Myers and Fred Armisen is kind of silly

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:18 AM

for 12 bucks,sounds good

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:18 AM

if it was a real big band, that would be something!

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:20 AM

now all the idiots who bought a ticket are going to defend their decision by saying it was only $12 bucks and then pretend that they want to go. watch.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:20 AM

"Reputable sources"

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:21 AM

Can I buy some ones tickets they don't want?

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:23 AM

this info is no more official than anything else. We still don't know what this is.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 11:28 AM

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 1:29 PM

thread powering down...

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 1:54 PM

The real cost to the people who bought tickets isn't the twelve bucks; it's the shame of walking into the Mercury Lounge while everyone knows you paid money to see the guy from Shrek.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 2:48 PM

masturbated to that logo this morning, felt like a winner.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 6:45 PM

it will be neither comedy nor music, just a few old men trying too hard

see: fred armisen & dana carvey new wave bit on snl

really bad idea on their part to try to design intrigue for this act no one has been asking for

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2011 7:23 PM

Geez. Very long thread. So what is all of this about?
