Beekman

The number of great and FREE NYC shows set for this summer grows by the day, and now we have a new set to occupy six Sundays. The new Beekman Beer Garden at the South Street Seaport will host a six week "Beach Party" series kicking off on July 10th.

With the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and East River as their backdrop, the respective bands will take the stage on the Beekman Beer Garden's 200-ton sandy beach at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoons.

Presented in association with producers involved with the indie-oriented Seaport Music Festival on Pier 17 (south side) and the RiverRocks series on Pier 54, the Beach Party concerts are free, and limited to 1,100 people. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and all shows are 21 and over.

Check out the schedule and flyer below...

"wish it wasn't free. Now it will be mobbed."

um, Burma played a free show at the side of the FDR in '08 and there were no more than 100 people there.

Vegans don't like Cheeseburger.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 9:24 AM

will be great, but only 1,000 people? Ugh. Long lines, etc. Oh well...

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 9:30 AM

I think they spell it cheezburger

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 9:38 AM

Doubt that anyone will be turned away, with the possible exception of Mission of Burma....and even so, I'm sure one could stand on the outskirts and hear them just fine.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:01 AM

^ Why would they book Mission of Burma and then turn them away? That seems silly. They'd probably get sued.

"um, Burma played a free show at the side of the FDR in '08 and there were no more than 100 people there."

Solar One? I was there. Doesn't matter, still wish the show wasn't free. Real fans buy tickets.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:08 AM

If "real fans buy tickets" then I suppose real bands don't play free shows.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:13 AM

aha real fans buy tickets. i bet you don't even realize why that is kinda fucked up. Real bands occasionally play free shows so their real fans who can't afford to buy tickets can see them too. it's not like they don't get paid for these free shows anyway.

Posted by Mandy | June 21, 2011 10:26 AM

10:26
lol. real bands play free shows because someone pays them a chunk of money.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:30 AM

Tis true..no one REALY plays for free!

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:35 AM

let's stop arguing and remind ourselves that MISSION OF BURMA ARE PLAYING A FREE OUTDOOR SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!

g'damn i'm excited.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:37 AM

bono plays for free. and he does it allllllllll for the good of african children. and, um, non-tax-paying-status-in-ireland-so-he-can-eventually-get-busted-for-said-non-paying-of-taxes.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:41 AM

If capacity is 1000, I can't imagine anyone will get turned away for MoB.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:47 AM

"bands occasionally play free shows so their real fans who can't afford to buy tickets can see them too"

If you can't afford to see a show, perhaps there are better uses of your time than concerts. How about learning a skill?

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:51 AM

cheeseburger is a real band, and they're pretty good. they played brooklyn bowl a few weeks ago, really fun live!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 10:57 AM

Brooklynvegan: World capital of complaining about awesome free things.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 11:33 AM

"Solar One? I was there. Doesn't matter, still wish the show wasn't free. Real fans buy tickets."

Wow, so it's come to this; There are people out there so fucking stupid, they'll actually complain about something put on for free.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 11:52 AM

An MoB show is always an appetizer to a tween sandwich!

Posted by Eric M. Van | June 21, 2011 12:15 PM

Hey BV - why did you ever stop doing "this week in dance" ??? please bring it back! : )

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 12:22 PM

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 12:23 PM

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 12:24 PM

fuuuuuuuuck pissed im gonna miss burma.. i'm gonna be at lollapalooza that weekend

Posted by Will | June 21, 2011 12:30 PM

Cheeseburger are awesomely fun! Gonna try to get to MoB as well, but sometimes it's just not worth going to free shows when you can guarantee that half of the city will be in attendance. Not complaining, just sick of getting locked out of free summer shows constantly :/

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 12:44 PM

Real fans make 70k+. This is a non-issue

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2011 12:47 PM

Cheeseburger is awesome. Just look them up on youtube. The video for "winner" is great.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2011 4:10 PM

Nice coincidence that you bumped this. Just started listening to Mission of Burma yesterday. Had the Vs. album on, along with the Signals, Marches, and Calls EP too. Good stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2011 4:36 PM

4:36, when I used to tell people that 30 years ago they called me names and then went back to their Journey and Bob Seger cassettes.

Posted by nygrump | July 22, 2011 1:09 PM

MOB still rocks whether free or not.so stop complaining children

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2011 3:41 PM

This venue has a great location, even though the regular crowd is very Wall Street. The good thing is, you can always stand outside behind the Seaport Mall and still see the stage, even during free shows.

I look forward to seeing Mission of Burma for free.

A tidbit of info about the Solar 1 show a few years back - Grizzly Bear was to play but backed out a few days before the show. Burma was available. So instead of 100 people, maybe 105 would have attended with some promo.
