Gil Scott-Heron

To great sadness, we lost Gil Scott-Heron this past weekend. As Black America Web (via The Daily Swarm) points out:

A memorial service has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Riverside Church in New York City for poet-musician-teacher-singer Gil Scott-Heron, who died last Friday in New York at the age of 62.

A public viewing also is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. [Friday] at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home at 81st Street and Madison Avenue.

Note that although the article does not speficy what day the public viewing is, the funeral home told me on the phone that it is Friday.

The Washington Post reports on a tribute that took place Monday night at soul jazz club Bohemian Caverns in DC.

So sad. I hope the public viewing isn't swamped. More respect to this man.

Does everyone just forget this guy wrote "The Subject Was Faggots"? Creep.

I usually wipe out racists with my Cuban temper. But you know, GSH would not have liked that. He was a man of incredible love for all humanity, including the racists. He won.

I missed his appearance at the Blue Note, in Harlem at Mt. Morris Park and now his funeral. For although I asked on my jazz site with 99 followers if they had info-I got no response.. and life got busy. Can anyone please inform me where he is buried, so I can pay my respects? I am so determined.

sultryjazzdivas/twitter. thank you not asking you to follow just inform. TY
