Rock Beach

After an online leak that included false information about big headliners (like The Strokes, Odd Future, Fleet Foxes, Gayngs, Dan Deacon), and then a promised-but-never-happened announcement about something right after that, NYC show promoters Jelly have officially announced a series of shows at "RockBeach"...

TOPMAN and JELLY have announced their partnership to bring you 'ROCKBEACH'- a brand new festival concept taking place from July to September this summer in the Rockaways of Brooklyn. The series of six free weekend events will deliver the hottest acts and new talent from its brand new home and will also - for the first time ever - offer festival camping for the last three events in the series at the Floyd Bennett Field - the setting of New York's first ever airport.

"After 5 years of Pool Parties in Williamsburg, we are very excited to be moving out to the Aviator Sports Complex near one of our favorite summer destinations, Fort Tilden Beach. We are looking forward to leaving Bedford Ave behind offering an ultimate weekend destination and adventure for all ages." - JELLY

The whole ROCKBEACH experience will deliver weekends of the coolest music and total fun to festival-goers with the likes of slip n slides, dodgeball, beach volleyball and most importantly - swimming pools filled with ice cold water and giant inflatables.

Entry to the festival is free - all festival-goers need to do is register online at WWW.ROCKBEACH.US In addition, there will be a ROCKBEACH festival shuttle bus with roundtrip rides costing $20 - but there are 100 lucky bus tickets up for grabs for each event which can be won by registering online at WWW.ROCKBEACH.US.

The first ROCKBEACH will take place on Saturday 9th July 2011 and will include performances from Penguin Prison, Wild Yaks, Janka Nabay and The Bubu Gang, and Monogold.

The July 9th date is the only one with a lineup, but there's also a less-specific flyer that has a big list of bands, and then there's a list of dates with no bands attached. All of that is below...

Posted by The Real Real Yup. PERIOD | June 30, 2011 4:18 PM

Excited until I saw the list of bands

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:20 PM

hahahahahaha.... all you north brooklyn/manhattanites have to come down to my neighborhood for once and... wait... actually this is kinda far away from me too.... and who are these bands? oh, never mind....

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:21 PM

totally down for camping. hope delicate steve, csc funk and psychic paramount end up on the same bill

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:21 PM

exactly, who is going to go all the way out there for any of these bands????

Posted by The Real Real Yup. PERIOD | June 30, 2011 4:23 PM

i have never heard of any of these bands...i havent been to rockaway since 1996...not entirely interested in returning.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:23 PM

lol. these are like the C-list opening opening bands from last year. jelly is such a joke it's sad.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:24 PM

Oof. This sounds like a nightmare.
And I'm glad I'm not the only one who has never heard of these bands.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:25 PM

I've heard of 3 of those bands

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:26 PM

Let the bitching begin in 3...2...1...wait nevermind too late.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:27 PM

Hey Y'all, bring your sleeping bags. We are going to see some crap hipster band and we'll sleep on the side of Flatbush Avenue!!!

Posted by The Real Real Yup. PERIOD | June 30, 2011 4:27 PM

YAY! A bunch of bands I never heard of!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:28 PM

Should one assume (based on Jelly's reputation) that they used all of those "marquee" acts to draw the sponsor, then after the cheque cleared announced their actual line-up?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:28 PM

death grips and bdod would be cool but fuck.... i haven't heard of any of this shit. sure to bomb.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:33 PM

what the hell? pay $20 to ride on a bus to the Rockaways to see a bunch of crappy bands that nobody knows? genius idea Jelly.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:33 PM

Well, at least all their "artsy friends" will be able to have a good time.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:36 PM

i do hope this is successful because you all seem to hate jelly so much, so i'd like them to succeed just to watch you have to eat a hot bowl of dicks.

(though i've seen penguin prison and they/he is fucking awful - bad, manufactured feeling pop - not a great start for a headliner - i can't imagine who would go out of their way to see that guy that doesn't have a parental curfew)

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:37 PM

Never understood the logic that just because you haven't heard of a band, that makes them crappy. Of course, big difference between taking a shot on them at the Waterfront or Seaport and having to trek out to this place.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:40 PM

"Jesus....next free shows are going to be in staten island...just you wait."

I could only hope. It's always been a pain in the ass to commute back and forth to all the shows I've seen in Manhattan/Brooklyn from SI.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:40 PM

Jelly hasn't announced the majority of their big name bands yet you vultures.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:41 PM

Am I SUPPOSED to not know who any of these bands are?? B/c I don't.

Posted by M | June 30, 2011 4:44 PM

The Rockaways are not in Brooklyn, and this venue is not in the Rockaways. Is Jelly/Topman that illiterate? Get a map. Floyd Bennett Field is cool and all... I get it they wanted to play on the name ROCKaway, but that is a weak reason for geographic dishonesty. Why not use a name that is a play on airports instead.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:47 PM

4:40, I understand your point of view but it's usually a bit of a give and take. You need to set up an event with established acts that people WANT to see and then you can always include bands most people don't know. That way, someone who came to see, say, New Pornographers or whatever, can say "Hey, opener X is good! I should go see them again!"

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:47 PM

yeah, the aviator sports thing is definitely not at the rockaways, but the camping is in the rockaways... kinda confusing

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:52 PM

Any decent hummus stands out that way or should I brown bag it?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:55 PM

"Am I SUPPOSED to not know who any of these bands are?? B/c I don't."

The only one I recognize is the Psychic Paramount. They have an album out this year. Check it out, it's pretty good!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 4:57 PM

wow .zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 5:10 PM

I thought Wild Yaks broke up???

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 5:10 PM

ha kudos jelly - leak a website with beyond ridiculous headliners (strokes, odd future, etc) then announce a schedule full of no-name bands. way to not get our hopes up or anything. haha shidiots

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 5:28 PM

i didn't know anything could be more than 10 miles away from me in nyc. carpool?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 5:28 PM

@4:41

Way to obviously work at Jelly you cum vulture. SQUAAAWWWKKKK.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 5:33 PM

Pools filled with ice cold water make my dick shrivel up like a raisin. Jelly totally blew it again.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 5:34 PM

isn't rockaway in Queens?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 5:34 PM

When do Daft Punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 5:35 PM

I think this sounds fun. An excuse to leave Williamsburg for once. I like Janka Nabay.

^ Yeah seriously. What can stop the Invasion of the Middle Americans?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 6:00 PM

when did Rockaway move from Queens to Brooklyn? WTF?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 6:04 PM

official statement from jelly.

"we r so alt we r gonn go even further deep into BK and pick anon bands that noones heard of after teasing the strokes + odd future. we r so alt. we will have party buses + camping + we are so alt. kewl. screw those stoopid high rises, bring on the beach + the crabs. we r so alt we dont use caps or punctuation either"-- Jelly representative living in Rockaway

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 6:18 PM

White Hills are awesome. Heard of a couple others. Not worth that impossible trip.

Posted by Panopticon | June 30, 2011 7:27 PM

Viva Vans/FYF!!! RIP Jelly.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 7:39 PM

Next hot spot will be Bay Ridge, Brooklyn! I know this.....

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 7:43 PM

are these shows indoors or outdoors?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 7:43 PM

what a disaster. fuck jelly

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 7:57 PM

It is really funny that they are claiming this is Rockaway. While it is not far it is still over a bridge and in another boro. This is the same as claiming Long Island City is Greenpoint.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 8:41 PM

action bronson is fucking sick

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 8:55 PM

death grips and danny brown and psychic paramount and action bronson are pretty cool

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 9:13 PM

Excited! Beach + shows. What's the fucking problem

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 9:30 PM

what about PUNCHES?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 9:37 PM

i used to iceskate at this place when i was younger. now it will be filled with hipsters.

also, seeing this list of bands makes me very happy that it'll be so inconvenient for public transportation. wow this is going to be awful.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 9:44 PM

heard of 4 of these bands. like .5 of them.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 9:52 PM

Can we seriously just kill Jelly, like no good bands like fleet foxes and adele?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 9:52 PM

How come Low T-Cell Count isn't on here? You know, the band named after what most trendy BVers here have???

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 10:52 PM

Ticks, Ticks, Ticks - that's what those little spotted creatures are on the bottom of the posters & they love to attach themselves to camping hipster ass. WTF Jelly?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 11:05 PM

Penguin prison just sounds like a made up band for a movie ....camping at a beach in NYC sounds interesting

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 11:16 PM

Death Grips and Delicate Steve. Nice.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 11:31 PM

As others note, Floyd Bennett is not the Rockaways. Rockaway Beach is in Queens, not Brooklyn. There is no beach at Floyd Bennett. Anyone planning to camp at Floyd better be armed with heavy doses of insecticide and head-to-toe mosquito netting, as its one of the buggiest places around. Have fun! I'll be at the beach (the real beach!)

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 11:39 PM

Why no mention of LCD Soundsystem yet...?

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 12:05 AM

Dude what kind of asshole actually goes to shows? Lulz, I take this site as form of satire. If you seriously care move west young man...

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 12:13 AM

Yeah, I'm losing my bugspray.
I'm losing my bugspray.
The kids are coming up from behind.
I'm losing my bugspray.
I'm losing my bugspray to the kids from France and from London.
But I was there.

I was there in 2k11.
I was there at the first Jelly show in Greenpoint.
I'm losing my bugspray.
I'm losing my bugspray to the kids whose footsteps I hear when they get on the decks.
I'm losing my bugspray to the Internet seekers who can tell me every lineup of every good Jelly show from 2006 to 2010.
I'm losing my bugspray.

Finally a Moon Dudes show!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 7:51 AM

Sick American Bastards will be headlining at least one of the camping dates.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 8:29 AM

A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view.
No one will tell us no
or where to go
Or say we are only dreaming.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 8:52 AM

For the people whining about the Rockaways. It's too far, the bands suck, who would go there, blah blah. I guess they didn't read the NYT article: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/16/fashion/summer-in-the-rockaways.html

“The boardwalk is the new Bedford Avenue,” said Mr. Kaye, 34, referring to the cafe-clogged commercial spine of Williamsburg.

Wait what was that ... you changed your mind ... NOW it's cool. LOL@ hipsters.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 9:08 AM

Why does every good outdoor venue have to be totally inconvenient to get to? There is a lot Superfund land that we can use > have the hipsters sign a waiver releasing the Company from any medical fallout, and then turn it up! Gowanas Canal at Smith St. comes to mind ... how cool would it be to be on the F train and see Fucked Up playing below?

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 9:32 AM

I don't know about you, but I'd go just about anywhere for Cerebral Ballzy. I don't think there's enough attention being paid to the band called Cerebral Ballzy. People are going to wish that they saw the band called Cerebral Ballzy when their grandchildren ask, "hey, did you ever see the band Cerebral Ballzy?" Well, I for one, plan on being able to say "yes. Yes, I did see a band called Cerebral Ballzy."

Posted by Señor | July 1, 2011 9:34 AM

Danny Brown is great, as are White Hills. That being said, this is a bit of a trek considering that I have very little faith in Jelly to even produce standard amenities like booze and toilets without fucking it up. I realize that his ship has already sailed, but I'd be far more comfortable doing this sort of thing if it were a Todd P venture.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 9:43 AM

Moon Dudes > Cerebal Ballzy

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 9:50 AM

WHO???

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 9:53 AM

i have heard of 5 of these bands. i am down for camping. but i am worried the crowd will be terrible.... also it seems like jelly is trying to exploit rockaway/fort tilden. it's like we're looking down on wayne's basement... except.. that's not wayne's basement.....

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 9:57 AM

fuck this spam filter the nytimes article is full of quotable content like this

“My favorite thing is to contemplate the ocean from the comfort of our terrace,” Mr. Noriega-Ortiz said. “Sometimes you want a rest from chic-ness.”

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 10:01 AM

he and his girlfriend, Jessica Uzzan, rented an apartment this summer at Arverne by the Sea, a new urbanist development with crisp clapboard, picket fences and the feel of a Phoenix ex-urb.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 10:14 AM

9:08am - the area being referenced in that obnoxious article that you think is supposed to impress us is the 86th-106th street blocks in rockaway beach, queens. The concerts are in Floyd Bennett field, Brooklyn. That is at least 2 buses and 1 hour away by public transport & 30 minutes away by car.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 10:28 AM

1028, 5 minutes by car.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 11:26 AM

First!

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 11:31 AM

sounds like jelly is trying to avenge us for the negative commentary by luring us to sleep at floyd bennett field where there is no shade so our white hipster a$$es will burn and we will all get tick bites, from which i understand you can get serious auto-immune ilnnesses such as lime diease and lupus

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 11:46 AM

ok 9:08 you nyt loser, you do realize it would take you like literally an hour and a half to walk from the rockaway boardwalk to floyd bennett field.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 11:50 AM

senor, you are a cornball/cornjulio but yes cerebral ballzy is very good.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 11:51 AM

funny thing is you guys take the time to comment on something that you considered not worthy of your time. Interesting...no wait! just pathetic? or is that supposed to be ironic? Oh wait! you don't have a job...oh ok!

Posted by LOsalt | July 1, 2011 11:56 AM

"What can men do about such reckless hate?"

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 12:30 PM

And people say NY doesn't need a big summer festival... so in the Summer we have all this shitty free concerts of Brooklyn band we get to see the whole year, now playing outdoor.

Every Summer the same shit. Rooting for the crumbs: "Who's going to play on Summer Stage? Who's in Prospect Park? Oh, has a new festival Upstate?".

Arcade Fire played on the boring MSG before I even started liking Suburbs and that's it. No more. Same goes for most of the bigger bands. While in other cities they play solo shows and festivals.

I would trade all these summer free, and payed, concerts in NY for one day of Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza...you name it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 1:50 PM

1:50, is English your first language? Those sentence are so bad my penis fall of and walk out the doors~

Posted by Deano Bravo | July 1, 2011 2:21 PM

No english in not my first language.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 2:48 PM

11:26? 10:28 here. You are wrong. It's 5 minutes by car to go over the bridge to the (end of) Rockaway Peninsula, yes, but not the area the NY Times article is referring to. On the other side of the bridge is Riis Park. Where that NY Times article is writing about is in the Beach Nineties, which is another 20-25 minutes away from Riis Park by car, making the total around 30 minutes.

They are very different areas.

Maybe people like to attack Jelly on this thread because they show up and post inaccurate information like 11:26 just did?

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 2:49 PM

By the way, how's your Portuguese? Você é um idiota, entendeu?

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 2:50 PM

sure i'll go on an adventure to queens to see cerebral ballzy, so so glos & delicate steve. why not? (no sarcasm).

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 3:06 PM

12:18 = Hilarious!

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 3:10 PM

I'm there! Monogold is the shizznit... saw them open up for Bear Hands at Bowery few weeks ago...

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 3:15 PM

I'm going for all of the hipster pu55y that will be camped out there overnight. Prime targets.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 3:17 PM

Is Frohawk going? He's all I care about.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 6:03 PM

lmfao

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 6:37 PM

Ft. Tilden is the shit. I was just there today.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2011 11:36 PM

LOL to all of this nonsense - the lineup is ridiculously lame - when delicate steve (who is nice and decent but plays in NYC at least once a month and doesn't exactly draw a crowd) is one of the 4 recognizable bands on this opposite of stellar bill- it's time to give up and maybe reconsider a different career. Jelly is run by a bunch of fucking moron trust fund brats who still can't seem to pull it together enough to actually (get their parents to) pay the people that get involved with them or (get their parents to pay someone to write a) press release that is more than 50% accurate - working with those douchebags always ends badly. hence the hatred seen by about 99% of the commenters (the other 1% are easily recognizable by the word "vultures" in their commentary). I'd rather spend my weekend cutting myself in a warm bath than commute 90 minutes out to a jelly-promoted anything to camp out and watch penguin prison.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2011 2:12 AM

Obessed with Headliners eh? Give these bands a chance. I'm glad to see new blood on the field. I've seen all those mock headliners before, they all suck live. If you don't know they line up, you don't like good music. You're all festival brats who want shitty bands.

Posted by Chuck Soft | July 5, 2011 11:43 AM

it just gets worse every year

Posted by Anonymous | July 6, 2011 3:15 AM

You got to give Jelly credit for putting on the best damn free NY concert series of the naughts in the actual McCarren Pool. Yet all you all bitched anyway. Then they moved it to the waterfront which in a way was even better, yet you all complained still about a fee concert series.

the Open Space Alliance (OSA) exploited the waterfront shows, and stole it away from Jelly and then change you for tickets for lamestream bands. So Jelly tries something new by restarting, going down to Floyd Bennett Park with new, emerging bands, and what happens? You all bitch.

Don't go to the free concerts, but maybe in a couple of years if it builds up steam this could be the next big summer concert venue the way the first pool parties were. Love of hate Jelly, they gave us great shows, and know talented bands, and don't follow what Pitchfork Media tell you to listen to. If anyone kills Jelly its you the people who follow trend, don't take risk and only accept something when it becomes the standard. Just sayin'

Posted by Anonymous | July 6, 2011 5:45 AM

No one in South Brooklyn wants this shit. I despise you hipster fucks for what you've done to my hometown and now you all think you're gonna travel down here and ruin it even more? You've already destroyed my precious Fort Tilden.... Giving us locals nasty, dirty looks like WE'RE the oddballs... Giving us shit like WE'RE invading "your turf". GTFO. I don't wanna see scrawny, meatless "men" walking around showing off their pathetic excuses for tattoos with their stupid dirty beards. I don't wanna see snobby, elitist cunts either.
Stay on your side of Bedford Avenue and don't fucking come here. Whine all you want about how it's too far. Good. Stay the fuck in Williamsburg, Greenpoint & Bushwick.

Go back to fucking Minnesota.

Posted by Real Brooklyn | July 7, 2011 8:22 PM

"Then they moved it to the waterfront which in a way was even better, yet you all complained still about a fee concert series."

- in which was was it 'better'

it's been crap since it went to that park..got all corporate sponsored - drinking only in special-areas - park police walking around like terminators.. it's been bullshit since it was there - only thing that was cool was that it looked good in pictures.
