Katy B

"In skinny jeans, red jumper and Vans trainers, her freshly dyed red hair pulled back, South London's Katy B is a different kind of pop star. Somehow she's got all bases covered, juggling white label, pirate-station authenticity and one-of-us, we-could-be-mates appeal. While the media still hypes indie bands, it's an increasingly desperate endeavour: this week [March, 29, 2011], the entire top 40 features just one - Noah and the Whale at No 19. Just as they have for the past two years, pop, dance and R&B continue to reign supreme, and Katy B, whose irresistible pop-dubstep single Katy on a Mission hit the top five last summer, is the current sound of both the clubs and the charts." [Guardian]
On Friday Katy B could be found performing at the giant festival known as Glastonbury in the UK. Tonight, Monday (6/27), Katy B performed in the United States for the first time and in a much more intimate setting - a private party presented by Giant Step at The Standard Hotel's Le Bain, part of the "Steve Madden Summer Music Series." There wasn't much music though. She only played three songs to the stylish, packed and press-filled crowd. "Katy on a Mission" was one of those songs. Pics from the NYC event are in this post.

Katy played the show solo, but will reportedly be with a full band when she returns to the States in September. Those dates aren't announced yet, but a whole bunch of October UK ones are. The UK dates and more pictures from the short NYC show below...

She's great on the few songs she does with Magnetic Man

So lets give it up for Katy B with her irresistible pop shimmy single Katy on a Mission and clang your cocktails together in the posh hotel nightclub.

Guess I couldnt make that as fantastically absurd as the original article.

@1:23 if you would take a break from your 'bro's' band and 'chillwave' which is force fed you'd know about music outside of bushwick.

katy b (although young) has been making really great dance/pop music for awhile. try listening before opening your mouth.

i was there...if the job was to get the hippest crowd in nyc together, then we are truly fucked as a society.

it was packed with straight losers and hip hop/pop kids.

she sang 3 tracks over the dj with a shit sound system. i liked her album a few months ago but its just pop music. i prefer her girl unit remix to the original single.

all i kept thinking of when i watched her sing was how her career in the states is over before it ever started.

The ability to market to people who have a "crush on red-headed singer" is almost unlimited, for a few months at least.

le bain = win

giant step's 'coolness' = loss

Aim higher Katy

Her album was one of the best pop albums I've heard in a while. If she keeps putting out good tunes I hope she gains a following in the states.

However, this event looks horrible.

And three tracks? They flew her over for three tracks?

I'd tap that

I was there last night as well. It was a short, fun event. Three songs was disappointing and I agree, the mix was awful but she seemed happy to be performing and had a great voice. Free alcohol and a nice venue made it a great night.

Definitely an interesting crowd, no doubt. Heavy on the industry people.

Posted by CJ | June 28, 2011 2:28 PM

yeah, girl unit remix "lights on" is disgusting...

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2011 3:11 PM

what a bunch of elitist, manufactured bullshit. seriously? shouldn't this be on gawker or tmz or some other cheez site? wow.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2011 5:12 PM

5:12 my guess is that bv takes money to cover shit like this - which I'm fine w/people gotta eat & I like the rest of the blog.

Anyone in the comments saying this crap is good is also being paid to do so or is a music industry hack. Manufactured shit.

"Bro?" Chillwave, 9:26am? Fuck off back to whatever record label office job you're sitting at. You'll be fired soon enough.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2011 12:12 AM

Yeah, because anyone who doesn't have the same taste as you works for a label.
