Marc Maron

If one needed further proof that F. Scott Fitzgerald's quote about there being no second acts in American life was finally dead, consider Marc Maron. The New Jersey-born comedian helped pioneer what is now known as the New York alternative-comedy scene, beginning in the mid 1990s at the now shuttered Luna Lounge with the Monday-night stand-up revue "Eating It." While many of his peers moved swiftly up the comedy food chain, Mr. Maron moved out to Los Angeles, where his career stalled.

Once there, though, he found that his garage, of all places, provided an escape from personal turmoil and professional stasis--for it was there that he began to produce his interview podcast, "WTF." The program has since become a bona fide hit via iTunes, where it regularly appears in the service's top 10 most downloaded podcasts. [Wall Street Journal]

Marc Maron brought his 'WTF with Marc Maron' show, a live taping, to The Bell House last night (6/1). He'll do it again on July 25 at the same venue. Like Wednesday night, there will be an early show and a late show. Tickets for both shows are on sale now.

Tickets are also still on sale for the two Paul F. Tompkins shows at the same venue.

Marc is now in the midst of a run of shows in CT. All dates, and a video of WTF on WBEZ, below....

Marc Maron deserves more credit and hes actually funny unlike the new massive bunch of lemming UBC crap improv kids who think they are gonna be big comedians.

I cannot get enough of his podcast. Commonly just a couple of comedians talking about getting their start, what it was like to struggle at the beginning, etc. Great stuff.

Saw him open up during one of the YLT Hanukkah shows. Somewhat funny, but I would not pay to see him headline.

anyone ever see him in one of these live ensemble WTF shows? i like the podcast but I wonder if it translates well in a live setting with multiple people. I assume everyone is on stage at the same time.

During the second set at Bell House, Ted Leo came on stage after Scharpling and Maron beckoned him. Maron and Leo did a brief a capella rendition of the opening of Rush's "2112." These shows are fun as hell.

I've always been a fan of Marc's. Saw him perform for free when I was @ Fordham back in '92 or '93. I'm quite happy for his recent success; much deserved.
