DOWNLOAD: Ceremony - Sick (MP3)

Ceremony

Matador writes:

For several of us at Matador Records & Filmworks, 'Rohnert Park', the 3rd album from Northern California's CEREMONY wasn't merely one of our favorites of 2010, it also represented one of those moments where we sit around in a dark room and wonder aloud, "can you imagine what these guys will do next?"

Those moments usually don't last long. Often one of the cleaners will turn on the lights and we'll have to explain they've not walked in on some kind of corporate hazing ritual. In this instance, however, the moment seemed to extend for several months, finally culminating in the worst kept secret in our version of the rock biz this spring ; Ceremony's next full-length studio album will be a Matador release in 2012.

The announcement of Ceremony's signing to Matador also coincides with the band's swan song for Bridge 9, a 6-song 12? EP/CD/digital EP entitled 'Covers'. Songs by Urban Waste ("Public Opinion"), Pixies ("Nimrod's Son"), Crisis ("Holocaust"), Eddie and the Subtitles ("American Society"), Vile ("5 to 10?) and Wire ("Pink Flag") are reinterpreted by Ceremony on this collection of outtakes from the 'Rohnert Park' sessions. Bridge Nine are taking preorders starting today.

Ceremony are in NYC now, playing two shows, each of which has featured in BV post in the past day: tonight (6/30) is at House of Vans and Friday is at 538 Johnson (and NOT Death By Audio). All tour dates below...

Somehow it always comes down to Madonna somehow.

Holy fuck, I did not see this one coming at all. Ceremony have always seemed hellbent on not really being part of anything bigger than what they are, have shunned being a band to promote themselves, etc. I'm going to guess Fucked Up being on Matador and them playing with Fucked Up in recent years had something to do with this but wow. Glad for them, but anyone else blown away by this news?

Yes 1244pm. They don't fit into Matador roster at all....but good for them.

FYI The 6 song EP is also being released on cassette. I just pre-ordered mine: http://www.b9store.com/Ceremony

"hipster hardcore"

Oh boy, more tape nostalgia! Dig that hiss man, it like totally adds to that punk rock sound.

Them signing to Matador isnt all that surprising to me, and it shouldnt be to most people.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 1:17 PM

I'm surprised only because their lead singer has been pretty outspoken about hating pretty much everything about the industry. They barely have a website and hate Black Flag.

@1:17pm In the past week, there's been a ton of press about cassettes, even in SPIN. I think it's safe the say they're returning like vinyl now.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 1:31 PM

Only vinyl actually sounds good, whereas tapes have always been inconvenient and sound like shit.

How long will it be until Pitchfork starts covering Ceremony on a regular basis and inviting them to play at their fests since they're now on a "proper" indie label?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 1:46 PM

so, can one of the two ceremonys PLEASE change their goddamned name already? this is getting too confusing.

the other one (label mates to APTBS who also play at DBA all the damn time) http://myspace.com/ceremonytheband

Since the shoegaze one kinda sucks, they should change their name. The hardcore band won the name war by getting signed to a bigger label.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2011 2:10 PM

They dont hate Black Flag. Way to take everything literally. Black Flag is one of their main influences.

Hardcore bands have never stopped releasing cassettes; it's not suddenly fashionable for those kind of bands. Usually it's a special release or something, not actual albums.

3:03, I'm aware they don't hate Black Flag. I was making a cheeky mention to "Sick."

Actually Chas Bono's band existed before both of these Ceremonies.

people say alot of shit about this band. fact is, rohnert park is really fucking good and they still put on an amazing live show. never disappoint. pretty psyched on the cover ep. an old albany band from the early 00's, Outta Hand, used to cover 5 to 10 and have fond memories of going wyld. im sure ceremony will do it justice. the pixies cover will be..interesting. psyched nonetheless.
