Ume at CMJ 2010 (more by Chris La Putt)
Ume

"How could I have not known about Ume? An Austin trio fronted by a whirling dervish of a singer guitarist who in the standard PR band head shot looks like she wouldn't hurt a fly; yet give her a guitar, a Marshall stack and a mic and stand back, way back. She shreds." [Dave Allen of Gang of Four]
Ume have signed to the recently established Austin, TX label Modern Outsider Records who will release Ume's debut full length, Phantoms, on August 30. The album was mixed by Jason Livermore at Bill Stevenson's (Black Flag, Descendents) The Blasting Room.

Ume are going on tour this month ahead of the album release, and will stop by Pianos on June 9 with Super Hi Fi, The Young Things and Wormburner and The Rock Shop on June 11 with Yourself & The Air, The Foxx, and Man Your Horse. They play the Saint in Asbury Park in between. The band will also play NXNE later this month and MusicfestNW in September. This week they open for Kylesa in Denton. In July they open for Mission of Burma in Austin.

"she shreds", eh? shreds like ... annie clark? like jimmy page? like dug martsch? or ... like, she looks really hot and cute, so we'll give her a guitar and she'll be all popular and stuff with the billyburger kids? yeah, thought so.

@Anonymous - why don't you listen to the music first and watch a video of her "shredding" before you open you stupid, uninformed mouth.

i saw her back in 07...might'a been 06 in austin. she's alright...but yea i'd say 11:04 is pretty much right.

puts on a decent show though...good for smaller venues. from what i remember...purdy much sonic youthish type stuff...perhaps in the vein of grooms.

She has has consistently inspired me since 2004, when I first heard her music and our punk bands toured together. She is a phenomenal guitarist, performer, and person (with a heart of gold) - and does it all in high heels without falling. Beat that.

Yeah she literally shreds your face off with waves and layers of distortion. Look up Octopus Hands (fan coined) by Ume or The Conductor. Incredible to see live. Her fingers are everywhere on a few songs but i enjoy the intensity of their Nirvan-ish ”Baby Xie Xie”. Nothing cute about that song. Ume = Sonic Youth + Nirvana + Metric :)

she could shred the $50 faux vintage t shirt off of pretty much anyone out there, she is a phenominal guitarist and anyone who tries to state theyre popular cause shes cute is fooling themselves

it sux when good bands go from playing smaller venues to mega-fests where you're 100 yards away.

Yeah, it sucks when good bands get more successful.
