Anna Calvi

The Mercury Prize-nominated Anna Calvi took the stage last night (7/27) at Le Poisson Rouge in a swirling mass of fog, and began to play “Rider To The Sea,” the opening track of her eponymous debut LP. Being a huge fan of the record I was nervous to see if she’d be able to pull it off live, but her headlining set exceeded my expectations. She commanded the stage with such a raw intensity as she played through most of her album in addition to an amazing rendition of Elvis’ “Surrender.” When she exited the stage after 10 songs, the crowd roared to get her to return. Her encore consisted of a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Joan of Arc” followed by Edith Piaff’s “Jezebel.”

Daniel Wayne opened the show and it was it was altogether a great night of music. Anna’s full setlist and more pictures from the whole show below…
