Gang Gang Dance @ Pitchfork Fest
Gang Gang Dance

"Saturday's centerpiece was unquestionably Gang Gang Dance -- who only played a handful of songs but used their short set to tease them out, rearranging heavy new grooves like "Mindkilla" and "Chinese High," "into expansive astral-dub dance tracks. Owning the spotlight, lead singer Lizzie Bougatsos wailed on various percussion elements, letting her witchy but soothing vocals blanket the field -- while the band's "vibe coordinator" danced behind her, burning sage and waving a makeshift flag constructed from a trashbag.

Calling Gang Gang transcendent undersells them. Unlike any other set of the weekend, people wandered in curious, and reacted with absolute jubilation. During the 11-minute jam "Glass Jar," most of the crowd seemed to be a trance, despite the heat being particularly searing." [Passion of the Weiss]

Like G-Side, Gang Gang Dance played day two (7/16) of the 2011 Pitchfork Festival and if Passion of the Weiss (quoted above) is to be believed, they appeared to be the highlight of the day by far. Fortunately for New Yorkers, in addition the band living here, Gang Gang Dance will appear in the city a few times soon.

GGD headlines a Rocks Off Concert Cruise tonight (7/21). Bubbles opens the very sold out show. Gang Gang Dance will then DJ at Warm Up on Saturday with Lunice, and play for free at the Mad Decent Block Party at South Street Seaport on July 30 (which just added Claude Von Stroke to the lineup).

Bubbles, who open the Rocks Off show tonight, play the free Summer Thunders show at Union Pool on Saturday (7/23) with Warm Ghost, Mountains, and Little Italy. Doors at 4pm. Updated flyer below.

Nguzunguzu, who had been touring with Gang Gang Dance up until tonight's show, have their own NYC show tonight (7/21) at Santos Party House with Death Grips. It also turns out this show is the official Gang Gang Dance after party (tickets).

Whoever the fuck Passion of the Weiss is, they are not to be believed...Gang Gang Dance was boring, meandering, and not interesting enough to be a jamband. It's fine if you wanna play long form version of your songs, but don't just play the same chords over and over and over again. The long form seemed like an excuse for their lead singer to be groped while crowd surfing more than anything. And don't even get me started on the dude in the picture...

"Mindkilla" and "Chinese High," ? My god are they just plain contrived reaching to be so weird but coming off just bad and artificial. To say they are meandering is an understatement because they think they cant get away with their sloppy derivative "experimental". Apparently some people are buying it.

is there ANYONE who actually thinks GGD is anything other than a bunch of over-the-hill scenesters with negligible musical talent hiding behind the mantle of "experimental"? honest question.

sold out means all tickets have been sold, but there is not really a whole lot of interest (meaning there are plenty on craigslist for face)

very sold out mean all tickets have been sold, and you're likely not going to get a ticket without giving up your kidney

wow, the hate for gang gang on this site is ridiculous... this band has been together making their own path since 2000 you fucking morons. what have you done?

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2011 1:45 PM

haha! too true- most of the "haters" on this site were probably listening to their greenday records when gang gang dance was playing tonic.

GGD=positive energy. brooklyn vegan comments=negative energy.

you can't produce an album like "eye contact" with "negligible musical talent". duh.
