Guided By Voices at McCarren Park (more by Tamara Porras)
Guided By Voices

After resurrecting Guided By Voices last year, it seems that Robert Pollard is putting them back to bed, and soon.

According to a statement by Guided by Voices frontman Robert Pollard earlier this week and later confirmed by management, the band's appearance at Hopscotch Music Festival with Drive-By Truckers and The Dodos on Friday, Sept. 9, will be the final appearance of the band's reunited "classic" line-up. [Hopscotch]
I'm not sure anyone thought the reunion would last longer than November 2010 anyway, let alone extend to New Years Eve followed by another nine months of scattered shows. Nonetheless, it seems the September 9th show that is part of the Hopscotch Festival, will be their last (again).

Guided By Voices played their last (ever?) (ever as the classic lineup?) NYC show at McCarren Park as part of the Northside Festival in June. The band plays Pitchfork Festival this weekend. They also hit FYF Fest in LA before this is all over (they also have time to schedule another NYC show before September 9th. Hey, why not?).

All remaining dates, and some recently posted video from Philadelphia is below.

they sucked in the 90s and they suck now. the reunion was unnecessary

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 4:46 PM

Pollards cool. The rest of the original lineup is pretty lame.

OMG,. THEY SUCK!

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 4:49 PM

I always preferred Bob's solo albums to Guided By Voices

Why does every bass player in every band have to pretend his bass is his cock at least once a show?

I'm a big fan, but those reunion shows were terribly weak. The energy is gone since the 90's.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 4:53 PM

Wellmont - You heard it here first!

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 4:56 PM

4:54, that's hilarious because if you were a "big fan" you would know that was not the case with these shows.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 5:31 PM

saw them twice in the past year. Maxwell's & McCarren Park. both ruled. anyone who doesn't like GBV really is a poser and more than likely hasn't even given any of their good albums a listen.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 5:34 PM

GBV was special

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 5:39 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 6:08 PM

they'll reunite in 2 years.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 6:14 PM

They were awesome at McCarren, I have no idea wtf others are talking about. Yeah they're old, but anyone who doesn't find it awesome that a bunch of dudes with real jobs played for fun in Dayton, Ohio into their late 30's and then became an indie sensation really has no soul.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2011 6:15 PM

robert pollard makes about 70k

What shitty bands do you assholes listen to? GBV RULES!! Anyone who says this reunion was weak obviously wasn't at the Maxwell's show in December. Amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2011 1:30 AM

I am not a fan of GBV's. That being said when a band reunites then hangs it up again they should let their fans know before the tour ends when the last show is so those who want to go get off their asses and go. end of rant

BV, shut this shit down. If this is what having open comments leads to, who needs it?! It's a bunch of primates throwing shit at one another in a vain attempt to leave some sort of mark on the world.

You are talking about real people with real lives, you scumbags.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2011 9:13 AM

9:13 takes anonymous internet comments too seriously.

Here's an idea, make note of the top ten bands on your iPod. Check that list in 35 years and see how many of them are still making important music.

Posted by Mark Hatley | July 15, 2011 1:40 PM

I don't know of a single mix tape from 1976 that included a single Guided By Voices track, so your analogy fails. Miserably.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2011 2:04 PM

they will be back without fail

last show, final tour....it's all just marketing

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2011 2:30 PM

Point taken, although my math is actually the failure. And, there is no analogy, FWIW. So let's call it 25 years.

The lack of durability in music today is an issue. GbV has evolved, and continues, through various solo projects, etc. to put out music that people enjoy. It has never been fashionable or trendy music, well maybe for a moment.

Posted by Mark Hatley | July 15, 2011 2:33 PM

Also, there were no mix tapes in '76.

Posted by Mark Hatley | July 15, 2011 2:34 PM

GBV > boring old hippies

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2011 3:15 PM

Greater than.

Posted by Mark Hatley | July 15, 2011 3:35 PM

@2:33 Evolved? Have you heard some of the garbage Pollard has been putting out in the last decade? Last decent record the guy put out was Motel of Fools in 2003.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2011 4:12 PM

@4:12 Yes. Circus Devils is pretty interesting. Space City also. And the pop oriented stuff he puts out is very focused. Let it Beard, what I've heard, should be great. Although, I know that if you are hyping Motel you are just goofin'.

I'd be dismissive as well if I didn't have the attention span to finish a bowl of cereal. I mean, if you aren't going to listen, you are certainly not going to pretend the music is good.

Posted by Mark Hatley | July 15, 2011 4:30 PM

ALL OF POLLARDS SOLO ALBUMS RULE. FUCK YOU HATERS!

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2011 4:30 PM

The solo stuff has become my favorite over time.

I can forgive anyone for not having an ear, but if you don't understand the contribution to the DIY music publishing model at a minimum, you are hopeless.
