Silent Barn (more by Leia Jospe)
Silent Barn

This weekend has been incredibly heartbreaking for all of us at The Silent Barn. On top of many issues that we're currently dealing with, over the weekend our house was completely ransacked. About $15k worth of audio equipment, house projects and personal belongings are gone. The violence to the space is almost as upsetting as the theft. Doors were ripped off of hinges, furniture ripped to shreds, and everything in the space strewn about in a sea of debris. We've lost 7 years worth of accumulated equipment, tools, and artwork donated and built by individuals from every end of the scene's spectrum, and we're still reeling with what this means for our own lives and the future of the space. If you would like to find out what you can do, email silentbarn@gmail.com. We need your help to continue.

Thank you for your concern over the last few days. It means as much to us as the space itself.

- Castle Oscar, Momma, Kunal, Lucas, Nat, Jordan, James, Joe
At least two shows have already moved or are cancelled. Keep an eye on the Queens' venue Facebook for more info or to get in touch to help.

Brings new meaning to being "silent".

Posted by Venkman | July 18, 2011 11:32 PM

sooo shitty :(

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2011 11:37 PM

let this be a negi-vibe-free zone.

we should all support the ppl at silent barn hard. no one deserves this, their lives have been inexplicably flipped. send all your love.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2011 11:38 PM

this is so fucked up

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2011 11:40 PM

@11:38 Agreed. This is terrible. Kickstarter?

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2011 11:43 PM

People are dicks. Thieves, try making an honest living instead of being douchebags.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2011 11:53 PM

@11:43 @11:38, Kickstarter would be really great if they'd set it up. I've seen so many amazing shows at this space. This is horrible.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2011 11:56 PM

The Silent Barn has always been an awesome space. They need a helping hand, send them an email to see what you can help with.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2011 11:56 PM

please start a kickstarter

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2011 11:57 PM

i wonder where that picture really came from, and what that girl is really crying about.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:05 AM

the most effed up. damn the man. idk/////////

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:06 AM

at least i wont have to go to fucking queens anymore. no wonder this happened in this area...

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:08 AM

@12:05 Click into where it says "more by Leia Jospe" and you will know.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:09 AM

SB has been the best place in NY for YEARS, I'd throw in a hundo or 2. Kickstarted would be great, but they take a percentage and all. Maybe a facebook group or something would be better? I dunno.

Posted by steve yankou | July 19, 2011 12:14 AM

Wow, that sucks. It's bad enough to get burglarized, but for them to also cause so much destruction makes one wonder if there wasn't at least some connection, however small, between these assholes and the place.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:16 AM

As an alternative to Kickstarter you can use Indiegogo.

Posted by Doc | July 19, 2011 12:36 AM

sounds like some guys really hated Liturgy. hahaha naw really this blows.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:46 AM

what..the..hell?

Posted by fastpasstv | July 19, 2011 12:58 AM

Don't people live there?

I'm guessing they had no insurances on these?

Sucks that these shit happen to people especially when I hear about bands getting their gears stolen on tour.....

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 1:06 AM

we don't understand that why they are behaving like that ?

Posted by Computer Parts | July 19, 2011 1:11 AM

Fuck Kickstarter, just donate via PayPal and cut down on the fees.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 1:28 AM

FDNY

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 1:37 AM

I have liked the shows Ive seen there especially the more experimental groups and missed a few I wanted to see because of the distance and somewhat due to the sketchy gang\thugs around the area.

I wouldnt make light of this at all but that area is a bit nasty. The motel down the block has been in news articles in Daily news and local neighborhood blogs about crime which were barely readable with the violent news.

And Yes dont people also live there and theres a cat they saved usually in the basement? I hope everyone is Ok because that sounds pretty horrible how badly it was destroyed as well as the theft.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 2:07 AM

1:37 AM You think it was the FDNY?
Its possible just dont know if your serious.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 2:19 AM

@2:19 of course it wasn't FDNY, neighborhood joke

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 2:27 AM

I blame Todd P.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 3:11 AM

heroin addicts can be crafty by necessity. careful the company you keep.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 3:44 AM

damn, this is so sad. That area is fairly sketchy so I'm not totally shocked, but its just really upsetting and a big blow to the experimental/ diy scene. i would donate to a fund

Posted by STRNGLV | July 19, 2011 3:56 AM

As would I. Bring on the fund!

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | July 19, 2011 7:35 AM

12:08, really? Get over yourself. Asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 7:41 AM

wonder if the assholes can sell the stuff they stole without getting caught

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 8:07 AM

i know a lot of people have said that the area is sketchy, but they have been doin this for 7 years now, and nothing like this has happened till just now. people get robbed everywhere, and this sucks even more because the robbers also stole that intangible item of awesomness that made the barn so.

im sure a couple of benefit shows could restore "some" of the stolen items.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 8:34 AM

where are all the snarky dick comments that come out of the woodwork when something really tragic happens, like someone DYING? surely this travesty is worthy, no?

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 8:43 AM

wow, just clicked the link to the other photos. if you're an under-age, awkward white kid looking for a place to drink four loko and smirnoff ice, this is the place for you!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 8:46 AM

8:43: I was wondering the same thing. It seems even now people are struggling to restrain themselves. It's par for the course, but even in horrible circumstances like this or someone dying (as you mentioned) the comments section is not immune to nonsense talk.

Nevertheless, this was a cool venue and to say this friggin' blows is an understatement.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:00 AM

8:43, there's few snarky comments because the loss of a music venue is much more tragic to hipsters than the loss of a life.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:08 AM

908 obviii

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:18 AM

Not every venue/artist on this site is related to hipsters. Now it just sounds like you're trying to justify these dumb comments (which is obviously the second phase in BV shit commenting).

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:23 AM

Bros icing bros....not cool

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:31 AM

aw bummer :( Atleast they are not giving up.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:33 AM

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto

People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
Are we too blind to see,
Do we simply turn our heads
And look the other way

Well the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal
And he learns how to fight
In the ghetto

Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
Tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down in the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto

As her young man dies,
On a cold and grey Chicago mornin',
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries

In the ghetto
In the ghetto

Todd P is Silent Barn?

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:45 AM

Elvis wasn't here

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:50 AM

That the place was utterly destroyed makes it seem like more than a normal robbery. That no one was there at the time is obviously best.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 9:54 AM

no shows? how are you guys going to pay your rent now?

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:12 AM

insurance scam?

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:18 AM

They weren't robbed---they were burglarized. There's a difference.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:26 AM

so sorry to hear this. so terrible. very good that no one was there. anyone who has expensive equipment should get apt insurance, it is VERY cheap, like $300 a year for a very good policy and SO worth it. that said, this could not have happened to a cooler group of people.
SB pls start the fund!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:31 AM

ridgewood queens is not sketchy, what the fuck are you talking about son

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:32 AM

when you steal somebody's shit you're " robbing" them. burglarized, robbed same thing, ie, we wuz robbed.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:33 AM

this is terrible. the crooks must have scoped the place out. hope the kids there have the strength to carry on...

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:43 AM

10:33 am will not be passing the Bar this year.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:43 AM

this is a really interesting argument about words for stealing shit y'all

pls keep going and for sure pls get into imaginary "legal" terminology. you guys are brilliant.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:47 AM

That burglary sounds personal. Very personal. Like they were trying to do real damage. Why would you steal artwork and destroy the place? Why take the sentimental stuff and not just take the obvious valuables?

They really should start a fund. I'm sure they could come back better than ever if they did.

Posted by Roz | July 19, 2011 10:49 AM

@ 1043

Why do assume I will be taking the "Bar"? are you psychic?

"robbed" is common parlance. people use it all the time. in case you haven't noticed BV is not a designated court of law.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 10:57 AM

white kids slumming in the hood get robbed. it's an absolute tragedy.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:05 AM

People made fun of Cheap Trick stage collapse, but hearts pour out for this. Sad

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:10 AM

Silent House, Silent America. I say take it back and start cutting peoples hands off for stealing. I bet robbing and stealing would stop like that. Oh, but thats inhumane, well look at our society.

Posted by anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:14 AM

Silent Barn was burglarized, not robbed

ok, this is a shame but what's next??

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:23 AM

I think it's hilarious- like something out of a Quentin Tarentino movie. ghetto thugs drunk and high on crack breaking into some shithole in queens, stealing shit from white indie hipsters and then trashing the place! total fucking madness!

you can't make this shit up!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:29 AM

Can everyone please shut up? I'm trying to draft a "solidarity synergy tweet" that will bolster my indie-credibility AND raise brand awareness for my alt blogazine.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:34 AM

the silent barn residents are neither all white nor could reasonably be called hipsters

the uber defensive anti "hipster" stance is far more boring than the hipsters ever were in the first place

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:35 AM

^so you are saying sincerely that they don't stand out in the neighborhood? Plz...

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:38 AM

there's a black guy who lives on my block

he doesn't fit in, we should break into his house and wreck up the place.

HE STANDS OUT IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:42 AM

eh please. Everyone knows the deal. you move into a bad neighborhood, where you have no roots, in search of cheap rent, you might just get ro....err...burgled. Nothing new here. That's just how shit goes.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:48 AM

STOP SNITCHIN!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:52 AM

Somebody should write a song about it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:55 AM

I once robbed a can of chickpeas from a friends cupboard when he was asleep... I'm a gangster. Don't mess!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:57 AM

silent barn has been in ridgewood queens for over 6 years. they didn't just move there.

ridgewood queens has a higher median income than williamsburg. not a "bad area."

it's asinine to knee jerk blame crime on the victims. the fact that you are using incorrect information to back it up is just sad.

why is it so important to you to kick these people while they are down? making up "facts" to bolster your argument is extra ugly.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:59 AM

11:23 #1 omg, even blipsters aren't safe!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 11:59 AM

Just imagine if it was 285 Kent robbed. Or the ol' Northsix.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:14 PM

the neighborhood around silent barn was never as bad as the market hotel intersection was a few years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:31 PM

Lol white people. I guess Ridgewood became "a bad neighborhood" after they saw a couple of eses hanging around the bodega.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:36 PM

THIS SOME MAFIA SHIT

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:42 PM

Just relocate it to Washington Heights. Problem solved.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:49 PM

STOP SNITCHIN!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 12:49 PM

So let me get this straight. A non-manned music venue (where people live), on a major street, was broken into, robbed and trashed. Doors broken, etc. The thieves robbed 15k worth of gear and no one saw a thing? Wouldn't it take a while to haul 15k worth of PA gear into a van/truck - then take more time to methodically trash the joint. Sounds like a team of thieves, and not just a few. But no one saw a thing.

Something doesn't smell right.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 2:07 PM

This attack has nothing to do with the fact that home robbery index in Ridgewood is 142 points above the national average. I heard this venue was destroyed by the M Train Mommas, a vigilante group of Latino & eastern european mothers who are after the whole ridgewood & bushwick DIY community for waking their infant children up at 2 AM with indie music twangs and broken bottles of Tecate. The Silent Barn only escaped their wrath because there was so much smoking inside, but it was inevitable. They have the cops on their side and they hate all DIY movements especially punks and anarchists! If we all chant "Stop the Violence" enough maybe they will relocate to Forest Hills.

STOP THE VIOLENCE!!
STOP THE VIOLENCE AGAINST DIY!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 3:12 PM

So awful. I feel sorry for all who are involved. I've enjoyed myself everytime I've visited the Silent Barn. I hope they can hold on in such a crappy situation.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 3:13 PM

@ 3:12... lay off the bath salts.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 3:20 PM

When did the cops first arrive to shut er down is the real question? For a number of reasons.

Apparently the barn was shut down and "vacate premises" signs were posted. Thus all tenants were gone and the barn was open for looting from neighbors who didn't like them anyways.

This isn't in a quiet sector of Ridgewood either. This is a bit grimier than the quiet side. We know this.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 3:54 PM

It's a drag they got robbed, really. And I'm glad no one was hurt. But, for fuck's sake, I've been saying for a while that we are overdue for a good crime wave to scare the hipster dinkleberries back to Iowa. I guarantee you that if the city was the way it was in the late 70s / early 80s this blog would have a much cooler vibe to it, mostly due to it being frequented by more genuine hard core coolness. You posers really need to leave, like now.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 4:12 PM

I'm usually pretty laid back but guys, THEY DIDN'T GET ROBBED! They got burglarized.

Posted by streetdude | July 19, 2011 4:24 PM

4:12 born and bred new yorker eh? good for you. i will say that the sentiment you express is pretty generic, internet tough guy/girl stuff. also i would put money on the fact that you typed that from somewhere in the midwest or south and dont actually live in ny. NITROUS MAFIA!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 4:32 PM

3:13: I hope so too.

Enough of the nonsense semantics already.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 4:33 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 4:38 PM

So Silent Barn gets shut down, but I can just witness a dude level a bodega counter in anger, slap the cashier with a banana, walk out screaming into the streets of the same neighborhood and 3 goof troop 18yr old cops laugh and let em walk off. Justice.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 4:45 PM

"Why do assume I will be taking the "Bar"? are you psychic?
"robbed" is common parlance. people use it all the time. in case you haven't noticed BV is not a designated court of law."

There's a distinct difference. The two words do not mean the same thing. BV doesn't have to be a court of law to recognize the difference between "robbed" and "burglarized." I'm sure you're going to make a fine lawyer as soon as you learn how to properly support an argument.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2011 5:29 PM

The difference between "robbed" and "burglarized" is similar to the variations of the word "hummus" and "hommus".

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2011 1:48 PM

You know, all of these ‘community’ oriented hipster venues are full of shit. They don’t serve the COMMUNITY, they serve other transplants and form little cliques that do nothing but hurt real COMMUNITIES.

Josh, Tyler, Logan, Molly and co. think of no one other than themselves when they construct “art” spaces like this, but then demand acceptance and help from the very people they’re pushing out of their homes and businesses.

I’m certainly not saying they got what they deserve or anything like that, but that before they plead for others to GIVE THEM MONEY, they maybe ought to think about the reasons they are so disliked to have had this done to them in the first place.

"@12:48: Spoken like a true transplant that has no clue what the fuck they are talking about."

Suck my balls, monkey. Wasn't born IN NYC, but my suburban neighborhood had more significant New Yorkers than whatever shithole part of the city you lived in. Far more. Most people who were successful in the 70's had more brains than to raise kids in Manhattan, let alone the other shitty boroughs. But I still enjoyed whatever little good there was in the city, and I sure as shit know what I'm talking about.

i was at the show on friday 7/15 when the nypd and nyfd came to check the place out. they stopped the music, the fire department kicked everyone, including the residents, out onto the street at 1 am. they were given about 15 minutes to collect their belongings, pets, etc and not offered anywhere to stay. a vacate notice was taped to the door, which is how people in the neighborhood knew it was empty on saturday. make jokes if you will but people are HOMELESS, everything they own has been stolen or thrown in a pile and trampled on. so funny.

no one's homeless except people who dont understand how the world works

I feel sorry for them. I hope they catch the culprit.
